Battery suddenly drops - Moto X Q&A

Hey all.. Picked up a Verizon Moto X yesterday and am absolutely loving it. I did have a quick question concerning the battery and am trying to figure out if I need to take this one in and exchange it. Yesterday when I was using the phone out of the box it drained fairly quickly. When the battery hit about 18 percent I got a warning that the battery was getting low... less than 30 seconds later I was getting another warning that the battery was at 13 percent and another 30 second I was at 3 percent battery.. I plugged the phone in, charged it to 100 percent and chalked this up to just a weak charge out of the box.
After the phone was off the charger I played a game of dots, watched about 40 minutes of man of steel and went to bed at 86 percent battery. When I woke up 7 hours later battery had drained to 67 percent. I went about my day and wanted to see how the battery served me at work.
Same thing happened this evening where the battery hit about 18 percent and within a minute I was getting a 3 percent warning. I used the phone for about another four minutes and it died completely.
I'm not really complaining about battery life... All in all I had around 21 hours with 2 and a half hours screen on time. I did notice that Google services had the phone "awake" for almost 20 hours. I'm mostly concerned about the sudden drop in battery and was curious as to if anyone else has experienced it. I'm currently letting the phone charge powered off in hopes that it helps. Thanks in advance guys.

My phone does the same thing. The last 20% sucks. Just dies. Lol

Try doing a battery calibration. Check if there's any app sucking the battery that much.
My Moto X today kept 2h and 30 minutes on 1% battery (i've put it on charge before dying), and took like forever to get from 20% to that.
Maybe you got a defective unit.

No cuz it drops quickly to 1% but just like u that last 1% easily goes for half hour to hour. Idk my actual problem is it'll say 14% left then in 10 minutes 4% left!

Same here except I have the at&t version

I have the Rogers version and I've had it drop from ~25% to 15% pretty quickly. From 15% to 0 it lasts ok, but it has never stayed on 1 or 2 for very long. I've only gone through 3-4 charge cycles so far. Overall the battery life seems pretty good.

dsuctf which
While mine doesn't drop that quickly, I did go my first day with the phone for 18 hours, and then the next day in pretty much the same conditions it only lasted 11. Going to try again today and see if it does it again.

interesting. mine got to 3% last night and i got "nervous" and plugged it in. has anyone actually killed off the battery yet (shut the phone down)? seems like previous DROID phones would shutdown long before it got to 1%.

had the same issue for weeks. the fix: let phone die completely. then charge phone back up to 100%. I left the phone off while charging (not sure if it is necessary but I did it anyway to ensure that the phones software wasn't causing the phone to charge weird). Once i did this, the phone never dropped from 15 to 1% again and it also doesn't charge from 80% to 100% instantly like it used to.

I ended up taking the phone and exchanging it.. New phone did the same thing.. I let it die completely and charged it overnight while powered off.. Today it was prefect.. Actually have had to try to kill it. Also got my kit kat ota... Absolutely loving this phone. Thanks all!

HTC 2150 Battery

This thing is amazing! Last night I finally let my phone just die and charge fully. This morning I unplugged it and started using it. I actually thought it wasn't reading the battery stats correctly because it was stuck on 100%. So i started using the GPS, Bluetooth etc... Finally after 3:45 up time and 1 hour awake I dropped from 100% to 99%. I am now at 4:15 up time and 1 :15 awake and at 95% and have been listening to a podcast for the past 20 minutes.
SOOOOO much better than the stock battery.
BTW - running Skyraider 3.1 RC3 with Kingx #4 kernel. Set CPU set to 998 max and screen off to 245-384.
the first time i used it i had 90 hours up time and 17 awake. This thing is crazy!
This battery sounds incredible

Seidio recommends 12hrs of charging? i only sleep for 5 hrs each night.
I just recieved my battery from Verizon yesterday. Dumb Fedex didnt leave the note on the door so i had to wait an extra three days. Anyway i charged last night bump charged this morning which took 1.5hrs WOW. One phone call and I'm down to 99% already. I will let the battery get down to 5% then recharge and bump charge i will do this two times and see what kinda battery life i get. For the size difference it better be really good. It definetly took away the slim line look. But as much as i use my phone i hate being constantly hooked to a charger.

After about 2 weeks of letting it die/recharging, it now doesn't even need bump charging if I just leave your phone off to charge the whole time. And mine used to drop really fast the first time but it has stopped doing that now. Goodluck

You can get used to the extra bulk quickly. I love this extended battery. I can use as much as I want during the day and charge at night.
I received this battery yesterday. I put it in my Incredible and it said there was like %40 of charge. I then turned my phone off and charged it for like an hour or so. I turned the phone on and saw it charged to about 97%. I sat there and watched the battery drain super fast. I mean, 1 minute it would go down like 1-3 %. I was like WTF?? I'm running CM6 and setCPU. Do you all think I need a new kernel? I was going to try a different ROM, but this battery shouldn't be draining this fast should it?
What are the proper step the charging a new battery? Does it really have to be charged for 8-12hrs? If so, I can buy a external charger and let it sit overnight.
Any thoughts?
Dude, it does that quick few % drainage no matter what you're running.
wow is all i have to say, i just got the 2150mAh, with the original battery normally i unplug @ 8am and dead by 4ish pm, it is now 1030pm i have 37% and ive been using my phone a fair amount today, this battery is amazing

2 things the V8 update helped with

First is my 4g connection......I don't lose it at home like I did at all, not even once since the update.
Second, the dag gone battery won't die I have the extended, After using the phone all day yesterday and using my flashlight last night, almost for got the 7, 1 minute videos I made, this battery is at 73%. The stats are telling me I have been on battery for 21 hours, 27 minutes and 37 seconds. THATS AWESOME
I updated and for 2 days my battery ate at 15% an hour, then on day 3 everything reversed and like you my battery usage is amazing. I posted some screen in another thread, at the 12 hour mark I was still at 84% on a stock battery. When I went to bed this morning around 4 am I was still at 73%, that was nearly 21 hours of light to minimal usage. I was amazed.
As of this moment I have been up for about 4.5 hours and I am at 98% battery so 2% battery usage in 4.5 hours. Granted I have not really touched my phone but still that is amazing stand by drain. I think they fixed a memory leak in several of the apps that was causing drains. I am not one to be easily impressed but well played LG... well played.

This makes me want to update so bad but I hate to lose GV, CWM and Beats Audio
It makes you think... Either LG really screwed up and fixed a battery issue , or they did something amazing and made it 2x better.
Seems to be amazing took my phone off the charger at 7:30am used modestly all day, fell asleep and woke up at 1am the next morning and it still had 13% battery

Anyone use Better Battery Stats? Need help lowering %/per hour

So I'm burning 1.8% per hour according to BBS. Does anyone here know how to decipher the info and tell me what's the culprit?
1.8% per hour? That's not even bad. Round it up to 2%. That's 50 hours. What's wrong with that?

It may be likely that your Moto X’s battery is fine, but having trouble correctly identifying how much battery life is left.
Simply run the battery down to about five to eight percent and let it die. You can speed this up by streaming a YouTube video. Then, when the Moto X has died, let it charge for a few hours before turning it back on.

Never go to zero
Obviously, using your battery is going to make it degrade. But it's going to slowly die even if you just leave that iPad in the closet for a bit. There's a trick to minimizing that inevitable aging though: leave it a little bit of juice.
If you're going to be shelving any lithium-ion battery for a long time, try to leave it with at least 40 percent battery power to tide it over. Lithium-ion batteries don't hemmorage power at 30 percent a month like nickel-metal-hydride batteries do; they'll lose maybe five to ten percent of their charge each month.
And when lithium-ion batteries get too low—like, literally zero percent—they get seriously unstable, and dangerous to charge. To prevent explosion-type disasters if you do try to charge one, lithium-ion batteries have built-in self-destruct circuits that will disable (read: destroy) the battery for good, if it reaches rock bottom. And sure, that'll save you from a face full of battery-acid, but it'll also leave you short one battery.

Always have heard it is bad to drain the battery in a phone. I know other people swear by it, but its not worth the risk of it not charging again, or worse blowing up.
Charging sooner doesn't hurt since there is no "charge memory" like nickle based batteries. so just plug it in when you can, and if you your away from an outlet for too long, maybe it time to consider an external battery backup.
OP, here's another thread that has been discusing the same issue, its a good read.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418077
I burn around 6% after the last update, with no other changes to the phone. And that's with Battery Saver on too. Used to be around 1.5 to 3%. Everyone said "just wait, this always happens after an update, it will eventually settle out". Total BS. My daily battery life has been cut in half for months.
Well I did a better battery stats 6 hours test ( let it sit no touching etc ) and Im only at 1% an hour. Im pretty happy with that.
I've tweaked the crap out of my phone....and get 24+ hours with 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 hour screen times. Extremely happy......and best I've got on standby is 1ish per hour.
Again....tweaked the crap out....for battery life. LOL. So 1 percent even may take sacrifices some may not wanna make. I'd say a stock sorta phone would get 2 even and you'd be doing alright.

wow you guys are getting great battery life! According to GSam Battery Monitor, I'm at 9.7%/hour. Currently 6 hours since unplugged and I'm at 35%! With only 2 hours of screen on time.
I think I messed it up when I first got the phone. I immediately upgraded to the 2 OTA's and forgot to do a factory reset. I think I might do one now and see if it fixes the battery life.

[Q] Unusual battery spikes in battery stats

I bought my moto x 3 days back and i see that in the battery stats that the discharge values are inaccurate. I could see the charge value going up and down and instead of a steady drop. I dint charge
my phone straight away till 100%. Please help me.
Battery level can go up and down a bit due to phone temperature. If it gets cold...it can lower, and rise when it warms up. That's just one answer.
Anyway, its perfectly normal. Unless its huge ups and downs....that's not normal.
Yes its perfectly normal. It will smooth out a bit over time as the battery gets conditioned.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Sorry for bringing this up, but I'm seeing the same behavior sometimes in my Moto X. And I bought it 3 days ago too. I did a topic yesterday. Its like sometimes (not always) it suddenly rises up like 2 o 3% by itself and then it sudden drop that same amount. I can see these little spikes in the battery stats, however, I noticed it 2 or 3 times. Thing is, I'm quite obsessive so I did see how it sudden went from 50 to 53% and then I saw that 3% drop later on.. Its not that I'm always looking at the battery but I have the numbers in my status bar and I use to check them out (and rememer them) every time i pick up the phone lol.
The temperature is really hot down here right now, maybe that's contributing. I hope after more days of use and charges it gets normal.
itz absolutely fine
I brought this phone about 6 months earlier and i too had the same problem. But it will be fine in few months because i dont get any kind of problem nw days
For instant i could suggest u to try to drain the battery to completely to zero and let it get switch off automatically. Then without switching on charge it to 100% and repeat this 2-3 times, hope it get well soon
Do you have your phone rooted..?? If it is are you using xposed module??

Battery dies despite not being 0?

Hey guys, recently my phone has been turning off at around 15-20% battery remaining. Before it drop from 15% to 1% within a matter of 45 seconds and then die, but as of recently it has been turning off at 20% and then it goes into a bootloop until I plug it in again. I've a N910W8 and am on TEKXodus URv3.6R3. I can't take it in for warranty as the phone is (obviously) rooted. I've already tried the battery calibration app on Play Store and I'm going to try Poprocks rom and if that fails, I'm going to go back to stock LP and then try my luck at the Samsung Warranty Center. Any other suggestions would be great! Thanks!
I'm completely stock, never rooted. It's been dieing between 5-10% left. I think it's just lollipop.

Just an update guys, I reverted back to stock (A0A1) 4.4.4 and then installed FireKat V13X Canadian Edition and my battery is no longer acting up. Definitely a Lollipop issue.
same thing for me. for older phones i remember having a recovery that let me reset the battery stats. i also noticed that when i charge it after it goes from above 10% to 0% and turning off, when i charge it, it would give me the percentage before it turned off. i almost thought it was a battery issue but i see from others its not. i dont leave the phone charging for long times and dont use the phone while charging.
I've been having battery problems lately too, the OEM one gets warm and does the sudden drop thing(went from 20 to 11% in an instant the other night), and even my Anker seems to drain much faster these days on both KK & LP. Neither Wakelock detector nor Gsam can find anything wrong, so I think maybe they're both just aging and need replacing :/
My stock Tmobile Note 4 was turning off at about 60%, then when I plugged in the OEM fast charger, the phone battery display came up at 0%. I called Tmobile and they sent me a new battery, problem gone now. I don't know how old your battery is, but it can also be an indication of a battery on its way out.
I'm on 5.0.1.
I never had it shut down at such a high indicated percentage, but on LP it would consistently shut off at 2-4%.
I went back to KK and it doesn't do that anymore.
I have the same problem. Anywhere from 10-30% the battery can die in an instant. Happened a couple of times while looking at the screen - the battery drops to zero in about 3 seconds. Wont boot up again until the charger is plugged in.
In my case I don't think its the software. Was working great for months - this is something that is steadily getting worse. I only noticed because I wasn't getting the battery level warnings at 15 and 5%, which I did used to get with the lollipop OS. Have ordered a new battery, hopefully this will do the trick.
Got new batteries
Update: I bought new batteries and so far so good. I think it was just an issue with the Samsung batteries. Went with Anker this time and everything seems to be good.
Just get a new battery. I had this same problem with the n6 until I got. Refurb

no has nothing to do with the kernel, either its a calibration issue with your battery or you got a dud
Yes, I had the same. Bought new battery. Not yet sure if sudden drop is fixed since it now lives way longer and lasts through entire day and still has 40-50% left.
Drop will probably be fixed, too.

Definitely a battery. With new one I drove with google navigation for 3 hours, put total over 4 hours of screen time and still couldn't get it to 0. Went to bed when it still was 10% or so.

Did battery replacement solve the problem for you guys? I'm having this issue for a few days now, and it can't be lollipop, I've upgraded months ago. Also, which replacement battery would be the best?
OK, this is some really weird behaviour. At 14% the "plug in your phone" warning sounds and it goes to power save mode. I rush to plug it in before it shut down. I plug it in on time, the "fast charge" message triggers. But, instead of charging, the battery goes down to 13%. 9%. I turn off the screen not to drain the power more and I wait for a few seconds. Turn on again, it's 4%. Turn off and wait some more. I turn on, and it's 1%. So I turn off again and wait, expecting it to shut down when it reaches 0%. It doesn't. I turn the screen back on again, and it's 3%. 5%. 12%. Charging normally. I don't get it why it went down to 1% before it started charging? And why the sudden power collapse only after the "battery low" message went off? It worked fine before that. If this is a battery issue, which is a hardware issue, why was it triggered by the software "battery low" message?
