Read, read, read. That's what sticky posts are for in android development.
There's a sticky in the development section that will tell you all you need to know. Just flash a safe gb or ics kernel before changing roms.

Hey, I also Will be getting my Note in the morning (just came from the HTC One S forums)
This hard brick issue worries me too. Is ICS official for the Note now ? And what are my chances of receiving it with ICS not GB ?
Is it as simple as you say ? Flash a safe Kernel then away I go ? I know how to use ODIN, Used it a million times for the SGS1, I just have this uncontrollable urge to use a custom ROM the moment i get my new phones lol, I'm not a big fan of stock to be honest.
Thanks guys ! Looking forward to being a part of this community
Only one way to brick your phone: Full wipe through CWM on ICS official and affected kernels, read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633943
Use Abyss kernel 3.9 - 4.2 for wipe.

Hi,
Recently i have just switched from IPhone to Galaxy Note, while really need some advise on get it "rooted" and flash with ICS (Since many people feed back its eventually better" perhaps someone can guide me a proper way of backing up my system as well as flashing it?
my phone details as below:-
Model - GT-N7000
Android Version - 2.3.6
Baseband - N7000DXKL2
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA1(I suppose this should be KJ1? but on my phone it shows this...)
Build number - GINGERBREAD.XXLA1
in such situation should i proceed to get it flash with the KJ1 method?
yes your ROM is newer, so you have to downgrade it.
You can downgrade to KJ1 pre rooted ROM, download link you may find on 4th line on my signature.

So in summary all i need to do is to downgrade my ROM to KJ1, follow the guide to root it, then only flash it to ICS?
by doing all these will it void the warranty of the phone?
Forget about ICS for right now..I would consider it advanced to install and for beginners I would stick to rooted GB builds until you got more familar with the phone and flashing etc..

Yes, Get Root + CWM
To install ICS, follow installation guide available with ICS ROM you want to install
Somwat agree with MrDSL, at least you shud read a lot before installing ICS.
Warranty can be regain by Reflashing Stock ROM.
Yup, indeed doing more research before i proceed to flash my SGN, sincerely thank you for all the advise and guidance though.
Rooting is pretty clear to you now I think.
As for flashing ICS ROMs, I don't actually agree with anyone above. I have earlier flashed TeamRocket's ICS ROM, Imilka's AOSP ROM and ICS Stunner on my note. ICS Stunner is actually one of the best you could have for ICS. (Almost everything works, or rather everything actually works ). Now I am using Imilka's CM9 port from SGS2, very very smooth, stable and most of the things work. Download and install instructions are pretty clear in their respective threads. I would actually suggest you to go ahead with ICS ROMs (ICS Stunner or CM9 especially)!
PM me if you need any help!

Hi There ,
I would like to welcome myself to the xda-developers , i have been exploring this forum for a while, honestly i am so impressed, this is the best forum ever
I think i wil learn looots of things from you guys ...i hope i can help out one day as a pay back ...love you..
My question :
1. i have flashed a stock ICS ROM and rooted it successfully ...
now i need to flash another stock ICS ROM..saudi arabia one to get arabic language ...how can i do that short and safe ?!!
Thanks in advance for your help , and please do make it short as i am not that technical :-(
First things first,
there's currently no 'short and safe' way to get stock ICS due to the Hardbrick bug.Read it carefully-when a dev/mod writes warning in big red letters, you pay attention to it.Although you may get a replacement from Samsung as all you did was flash a stock rom and as long as your binary counter is zero i.e. no 'yellow triangle' is displayed when you start up your phone.
For getting the Saudi Arabia ROM-use this
thanks
well..i have installed stock ics rom from a stock GB rom ...now i am confused should i downgrade to GB first or just use pc odin right away to flash this one as well?...
and thanks for the link ...but searching confuses me even more ...so many ways to flash.i need some that have succesfully done the same thing to guide me..
Newer the better !!
ICS is safe with a safe kernel(i.e. a kernel which is devoid of any wipe data bug Eg. All CM9 kernels, speedmod kernel, franco's kernel). If you wanna stay stock in ICS flash any stock firmware through ODIN and replace the stock kernel with a safe one. If you wanna custom ROM, there are many to choose from. Here also the same procedure applies. Any ROM with a safe kernel. so cheerios and Welcome to the ICS bandwagon. You can flash it over the same with a safe kernel also(I have done safe many a time) but it doesn't get hurt to flash into GB and to be back on ICS. A 33k Note is of more value than a time of ten minutes. LOL.
you can also read this thread to get more information on staying safe in ICS.

Hi,
I'm currently on stock ICS (4.0.4).
My phone has recently started occasionally/randomly restarting itself.
I've read that doing a factory reset or data wipe will result in a brick so was thinking of switching to a custom rom.
What's the best Jelly Bean rom? or isn't there a good stable one?
If not then what's the best stable/usable ICS rom and how do I get there from stock?
I know I need to flash GB via pc odin, but what after that?
There are warnings that say "FLASHING FROM STOCK ICS OR ROMS BASED ON STOCK ICS WILL RESULT IN A BRICK!"
I just wanna be as clear as possible. Would hate to have a brick.
Thanks.

JB roms are still in development and not so stable for daily use yet. For flashing custom ICS you do not have to flash GB rom, just flash safe custom ICS kernel and flash custom rom through cwm recovery.
You can also wipe your current rom after flashing safe custom kernel. No need to flash custom rom just because you cannot wipe on stock kernel
For my personal of view, liquid smooth jb v2.0 beta is the best at the moment.
If you on rooted ics. You can flash jb rom thru safe kernel such as cm9 kernel, gb kernel or notecore kernel.
But please read carefully and understand what noted at op and follow the installation method.
Good luck.

ok I see.
So I need to go from Stock ICS > Safe ICS > Custom ROM
Have you guys got a link to an easy tutorial?
Thanks

Never Never Wipe on ICS as stated in op.
Now everybody knows JB is still under development and in preview. So I think you should have to wait for a stable version to enjoy the juice
For ICS you can try Cleanote v5,Kingdroid or RR for better performance and battery life
Here are the links :-
Cleanote v5 ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716088
Rocket Rom ----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1654838
Kingdroid ----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652831
Hope it Helps

Here is the best thread for rooting and flashing custom kernel on Note- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Once you are rooted and on safe custom kernel you can follow the instructions on your chosen custom rom OP.
In terms of safer installation method. It have too many of opinions around note forum. Some will say flash any rom or nandroid by using abssy 4.2 kernel, some will say not neccesary to use abssy 4.2 kernel with the secure and safe kernel exists such as notecore and speedmod kernel.
Some will advice you must go back gb before flash cm base rom and some will tell you totally bull**** and not neccesary to go back gb before flash cm base rom with secure tw kernel around.
Confuse? For me, all of them have the right opinion and nothing wrong with them. Thats your own smartphone which cost about usd 500. If you scare of something, just follow the long installation method. If you feel lazy to take do such of long intallation step, you can always use the secure kernel to swap in between gb, tw and cm base rom.
But anyway, is your own asset, your own choice. You are the one who will take full responsibility for doing any modification, rooting and flashing. Not anyone else here.
You can always refer dr.ketan advice.

Simpler if you are on warranty and you can make use of it and off you don't want to flash or to scared to do a flash then wipe if the phone bricks you can send it on ssc for repair on warranty.

Hello dear XDA fellows.
I know questions like these are not very popular but I am on very short time to research and experiment. Also, not familiar with Galaxy S i9000 rom scene at all.
I need a rom for this phone, which will be used by a complete newbie to android/smartphones/touchscreens, so I cant expect them to know anything about tweaks or launchers.
I need a rom that is stable, looks most stock/Touchwiz (and/or feature rich) and preferably ICS. Preferably a port of SGS2 ICS or even modified SGS GB builds are fine.
Phone is currently running some CM9 ics build and is rooted. Thank you all for your recommendations
If you want GB try stock jw8 + semaphore kernel.
You can find the latest stock roms in ramads thread. Search it in the general section. You can find there all the instructions on how to flash with odin.
Cheers,

O K so i have just flashed Philz Safe Rom XXLRK-XEU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191 to my note and everything seems as it should but i am a little confused as to what roms i can apply. Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong place my head is a bit all over the place after reading a lot this morning deciding if it is safe to start rooting/flashing my note, my only previous experience of this was through odin for my sgs2 so i am new to the note scene.
Ideally i would love to put paranoid android on from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802 but i am cautious that the install logs states not to install this rom from a stock kernal which is pretty much was philz kernal is isnt it ???
if anyone can help a newbie to the note scene out i would be greatly appreciated as i am getting confused going through all the searches i have done this morning
Hope you can helpo - cheers

when you flashed Philz Safe Rom XXLRK-XEU.. your note is already rooted now.
This kernel is safe and you can flash the PA rom with no issues. Just follow the procedure in the PA thread.

Thank you - i will check it out and report back
Is this the case with all roms or just the PA rom, am i to presume that the "safe" kernal is just that and i can go and try out a few roms just as i did with my sgs2 ?
Thanks
KV3
Yes.. but when you flash a new rom, the kernel will change to whats included in the rom. In between if you choose to flash stock ICS again, need to take caution to move to safe kernel again
thanks again for the quick responses - is it best practise to always reflash a safe kernal after the rom has been installed, so in the case of me flashing PA rom i can then reflash Philz safe kernal - i am sure i will get to grips with it all there just seems to be more risks involved with the note / ICS than when i was working with my sgs2
Cheers
No. All custom roms will have a safe kernel in built. Philz won't work with custom roms as it's a stock kernel. Best is hydracore but that does not work with the JB leaks of Samsung TW
all up and running and everything seems great with the PA rom - no complaints here yet but i havent had much chance to play with things with work and all that other stuff so thanks again nokiamodeln91 i have clicked your thanks button for all your help
