I know I have other threads on this but decided to give all my symptoms and what I have done up till now in one thread.
Ok, so to begin........ I had the power button problem on my Captivate as well as other problems, phone would get hot and smell and do weird things. So I decided to buy a broken phone off ebay and change out the motherboard.
I swapped boards and the new board had a lock on it so I couldnt get into the phone so I restored it to factory defaults. After that I was able to get into the phone and it works great except for the fact it will not connect to the network! So I have a camera and a wifi device.
Here is a list of problems I see.....
When phone boots up without sim card it doesnt ask for a sim card to be inserted
when sim card is inserted it doesnt read it (card and card holder work fine on other motherboard)
No network but wifi works fine
Baseband version - unkown
phone number - unknown
mobile network type - unknown
service state - out of service
mobile network state - disconnected
imei - unknown
imei sv - unknown
I have tried pretty much everything I have read on the forum....
Rooted phone and installed a custom rom and corn kernel - no luck
Mobiletechvideo method - no luck
moved efs folder from old motherboard to new motherboard - no luck
did a CWM backup on old motherboard and copied it to new motherboard and ran CWM recovery - no luck
tried Galaxy S unlock and no matter what I do only get the FFFFFF code
Flashed other modems - no luck
in hex editor my nv_data.bin files look fine.......
00188008|2e|34|00|00|00|00|ff|41|.4....A
00188010|54|54|00|00|00|00|53|47|TT....SG
00188018|48|2d|49|38|39|37|5a|4b|H-I897ZK
00188020|41|41|54|54|00|00|00|00|AATT....
So anyway, Im at the end of my rope so hopefully I can get some insight before I just give up (which I keep saying I'm going to do but havent yet, lol)
Thanks!
It may not matter, but have you tested someone else's SIM card in the phone that's not detecting yours? If it won't read two different cards, but all the software parts are looking like they're functioning correctly, it's possible you have a lemon SIM card reader.
I don't know if that's something that could be replaced, but if you test it and it won't read the second card, it might be worth getting in contact with Josh (connexion2005) at mobiletechvideos to see if replacing the SIM card reader is something they can do.

Yes I have tested other sim cards and they dont work either. I had thought of this too but I put the sim card reader/holder on the other motherboard and it reads fine.
Here's an interesting twist......
started looking around in root explorer and looked at dev/block, only folder in there is dev/block/void and it is empty. Maybe this could be the cause? If so anyone know how to fix it, lol
This very well may be a modem defect. Do you have the background story for how it became this way?

It was a phone with a broken screen I bought off ebay, took the motherboard out and put it in my phone which has a bad motherboard. Hasnt worked since I switched it out so that as far back as I can go. If it was a modem defect would the wifi still work?

i have torch v1.5 on my phone. when i took my sim out, put a friends in so she could use it, then put mine back in, it didnt recognize my sim. i cant access the APN settings to change those back to rogers, because it says "insert sim card to access network services". can someone please help me with this as i NEED my phone for this weekend.
Cheers
Get a new sim card?
Does your sim card work in a different phone?
That happened to me once. I had to return the phone. I was unable to get it to recognize the sim card.
Different rom didn't help either. Even when I flashed back to stock... no sim. It was a refurb so a new one was easy to get.
Hope you get it worked out.

Clean contacts on sim card. Factory reset. If that doesn't work call Rogers for replacement.
No warranty you can replace the simcard slot its a daughter card I think you can order from globalpartsdirect
I have the exact same problem. Again it happened with a warranty phone I just received today. It occurred while trying to root the phone. The SIM card from my wife's iPhone does not work in my phone either. However, my SIM works in her phone. I've tried just about everything I can think of at this point other than running Kies (my next try).
BTW,
Unlike my original Captivate, this one came to me with Froyo already installed.
Under Menu /Settings / About phone /Status /Network what does it say ??
If it says "Unknown" you could try just flashing ur modem again.
I am having the exact same issue with a refurbished phone from AT&T and insurance gone im out of luck unless there is a easy solution.
Hello Everyone, So this is my situation so far:
I have a Samsung Captivate with unbrickable mod added. I flashed with Heindall to 2.2 froyo on linux. The SIM card is not recognized. I have triend 2.1 and 2.2 and 2.3 one clicks in windwons with no luck. I tried to mess with IMEI and elfs file. Results were that the lines i was suppose to change on nv.bin did not exist (no lines in file i was attempting to correct). So at this point and time can i conclude this is absolutely not a software issue? Problem two is if this is a hardware issue and not a software issue. Where do i begin? how much is the price for replacement? How hard is it to do? I have tried flashing with everything off the phone (sim and sd) Im a bit lost at this point. Any help would be great.
Update: Spoke with Adam and he says its not a software issue. I also spoke with the guys who did the soldering and said the issue is not coming from the soldering. I am thinking maybe when the phone was taken apart something got loose? Any thoughts anyone?
Help!!!
So I had the power button failure and no electronic cleaner would fix it. I bought a broken captivate off ebay and replaced the motherboard. I had to take the daughter board off my old motherboard and place it on the new motherboard cause the old daughter board had a bend sd card holder. Turned on the phone and it had a lock on it so I did a hard reset. Now the phone turns on and seems to work great except for the fact that I have no network connection and my contacts from my sim card dont show up under my contacts. Sim card worked fine before the switch and works in my blackberry right now so I dont think its the sim card. I have re-checked all the connections and they are fine. Hopefully someone can help me with this.
Thanks!
Edit: Wifi works but still no network.
I was flashing modems on the move and got a sim lock msg on boot. Had no connection to the network. I don't know if this is the same problem but I resolved it by downloading "Galaxy S Unlock" app from the market. It's the purple computer tower/wrench icon. Hope this helps!
have no IMEI number, phone not rooted.
I put the other motherboard back in my phone until I "hopefully" figure this out. Is there a way I can copy my IMEI number from the original motherboard to the new one so it will work?
/efs folder on root has my imei backup. There might be a more specific app to deal with this. A search of the forums " EW] IMEI generator and ROM zip update" might be what you a step in the right direction. Like I mentioned I just used galaxy s unlock and it fixed everything.
(Can't post links being a noob sorry)
Guess I will have to root the phone and try this method then. Thanks
I have the same problems. The power button stopped working, then before I could get to repairing it, my wife left the phone in the sprinklers and the nothing would work. I disassembled the phone, cleaned with CRC cleaner- got it working, but with green tint to everything. Disassembled, cleaned all contacts with CRC & q-tips- got display back to normal but now it does not recognize the sim card. Card works fine on old phone though. When I get home I will check the imei #.

lol, Im in Bakersfield too. Maybe its something in the air?
I tried to root it last night with super one click but the program kept locking up and stopped responding. What are other alternatives to rooting the phone?
Mine is also missing the imei number when I look for it under phone info. What does the sim card have to do with the imei #?

I'm running the latest Cyanogen 9 Nightly. While texting I set my phone down and it suddenly lost signal.
So far I've tried re-flashing, wiping data, restoring older backup, other SIM cards and always with the same result. "NO SIM CARD"
I've never used any micro-SIM adapter or anything like that, so I doubt the pins are damaged...
Could there have suddenly been an EFS-related issue?
First time I've encountered this, so...any thoughts...?
I had this issue a few times when changing SIM cards,
I eventually solved it by having to "Wedge" one of my SIM cards in for it to be picked up, the other however works without issue so I suspect I have a faulty card due to the time it's spent in my wallet..
I'll try to re-flash to stock GB.
I have absolutely nothing showing up in my APN menu.
I'll try configuring it manually from someone else using the same provider...
Bad timing....really bad...

You should be able to check your EFS folder, But I think it's unlikely if it just "Happened" a while after the flash..

Try inserting sim other way around.
Or check if lockscreen is working at all. You might have to, in ics do some special stuff.
Go to settings, security and check if you can lock the sim and change pin. Just try that to check if lockscreen functionality is down. If it is, check my threads, in statistics section in profile, I might have experienced something similar.

SIM security doesn't work. It's as if the SIM card isn't even there...
Well, its easy to dammage connectors, check if they are bent.
If not and simcard inserted right way try the fix in the thread I posted anyway. You do need to be rooted for that.
Also check if efs is still there and emei is correct. Dial *#06#* for that.
If after reboot it still doesnt work, and you have tried other roms. I'd suggest going back to stock condition unrooted and call upon warrentee. Seems to be special hardware issue.

I think its efs related problem
Do you still have the imei number
I wanted to add a me too here, under the same circumstances. I have not yet flashed to a stock ROM yet, but will try. I doubt I have the warranty option. Hope to find a positive solution.
Using CM9 based paranoid Android.
I had the same problem when I got my note thought it was a faulty phone but took it to my local Vodafone store and it was the sim card itself the chip had worn away and was not making a connection...the sim card was only two years old so if its an old sim that good be ur problem and not the phone itself...

I forgot to add that I can rule out my SIM card as I have several phones to test on. In my mind, this leaves software and hardware.
Out of curiosity, are the radios (basebands?) flashed for each new ROM, or is it just for a major upgrade?
I think I've discovered my issue at least. I am nearly certain that it is related to heat. Web browsing while charging, playing resource heavy games, using gps in a hot car will cause the radio to fail. If I restart, radio is still gone as long as the phone is still hot. Allow it to cool naturally, or put it in the refrigerator for a short while, and radio is back.
I think my goal now must be to find the coolest kernel / ROM combo while I am using this as a phone. Perhaps motivation for the Note 2?

I was hasty...the issue WAS my SIM card. My Skyrocket was probably much less sensitive to the corruption than the Note.
Before I buy another used Captivate to swap motherboards, I'd like to know if there's anything else I should look at.
Scenario: Bought used Captivate with bad USB port and running CM9 Beta. Once I finally got my SIM card, I had no network signal (couldn't even find any operators when you search for them). Redid the APNs multiple times though those seem to be for Internet and MMS rather than cell. Wifi works fine. Flashed to CM 9.1 stable. No difference. Verified phone is unlocked. Verified IMEIs match. Verified baseband was listed. Verified my phone # is listed. Flashed to CM 7.1. No difference. I wanted to flash to stock but can't because Mobile Odin won't work with CM's partition layout. Thus, it seems I am stuck with CM or MIUI.
Is there anything in efs or another system directory that could prevent me from getting a signal?

I've been with you on another thread so I know for a fact you've tried all that stuff. But I don't recall did you ever try to flash an new or different modem? If you haven't or just want to try a new one I attached the one I use. Or I can get you the link to a page with a whole lot of others to choose from.
Other than trying a new modem I'm at a loss as to what it could be besides hardware at this point. Btw were you ever able to test your sim card in another phone to make sure it's functioning? Or do you know anyone with an att sim that you could test your phone with?
Things you could try:
1. Turn the flight mode on and then turn it off and see if that helps.
2. Open the phone and see if the antenna's contact points are okay.
3. Open the nv_data.bin in efs directory and see if the value at the offset(you can search for the exact value) that stores the network lock flag is 00. If it is 01 then it is still locked. I know you checked for the lock already but it never hurts to double check. You could also take a look at nv.log and see if there is anything there at the end that might be helpful. You could also check for lock by dialing *#7465625#.

My next move was to flash some other modems actually, but I may wait until after tomorrow (see below). I tried to swap with my SIL who is on the same service but her phone takes the micro SIM. I'll try again Wed night with another choir member that has an ATT S2 I think.

1. No help.
2. Where are the contact points? I've not found any schematic or disassembly instructions for this phone. I can see the external antennae connector, of course.
3. That was how I verified it was unlocked. All the bits in the appropriate area were 00. I'll have to look at the log file.
How would I dial any service code with no service? It tells me "mobile network not available" once I hit the Phone button.
New Info
I'm really hoping this is the answer to all my headaches the past several days trying to figure out why this phone won't get service. I just spent the past hour on the phone with my OLD carrier trying to re-activate my OLD phone with a different number to give to my son. We had to jump through a bunch of hoops because my old line was still "suspended" because of the port order. It is due to be "deleted" tomorrow. So even though my NEW carrier said activation was complete and my OLD phone stopped making and receiving calls 8 days ago, could the fact my number has been "suspended" be the reason I can't see any GSM networks?
Sadly my SIM worked in another phone but his didn't in mine.
Looks like I have a mini netbook.

I'm not getting ANY signal. It always shows -110 dbM or less and 0 or 1 asu. The seller said the GPS worked fine, but I don't get a lock on that either (but maybe you need to "fix" the GPS with each ROM flash?). I've only been concerned with cell service at this point.
I'm going to pick up another Captivate in another hour. I'd like to root and unlock it right there to make sure it works, but don't think I'm that good yet to do quickly and safely. Assuming it's running KK4, the Easy Root pgm seems simple enough to root. May also try SuperOneClick.
For unlocking, I'd hoped to use Galaxy_S Unlock, but couldn't figure out how to get it onto my micro SD card to load onto the other phone.
The "new" Captivate works. It came with KK4 and a good USB port. I'll flash something onto it soon once I learn how to properly back up everything.
glad your new one works.

If you start the phone without a sim card in it, does it detect its absence and vice versa too? If that functions properly then another possibility could be that the IMEI of the phone might be blacklisted. It might have been reported as stolen. You could call your carrier to find that out.

Yes, it detected whether a SIM was in it or not. When I had signed up for the new service it had said the IMEI was OK. I guess that doesn't mean it stayed that way. I would think that would just prevent you from accessing the service, not prevent you from detecting a signal at all. When I picked up the second used Captivate, his SIM card had been deactivated, but it still showed it was getting a signal.

Once I had my efs folder deleted while flashing a rom and my IMEI defaulted to some value and it showed no signal at all. I checked IMEI and realized it was a different one and that led me to look at the efs. Once I restored the efs folder from my back up, all was fine again. Therefore I think if your IMEI is blacklisted it could happen and hence made that suggestion to call your carrier. Your carrier might also be able to tell you if your phone made any attempts to register on their network or not.
Hey just got new z1 for my wife.

Go via Warranty.
Well same happened to me at first I though was the sim reader but it was the rom that suddenly stop reading the sim and I don't know why. The solution was to flash a different rom and now I am with kitslim. To check the sim reader I used the app "sim card by gsmdev" such app allows to read the sim information like contacts imei etc so if that app reads that info means that the sim reader is OK and you need to flash a different rom or the same. Hope this help

Check if your imei is intact, perhaps you could flash an FTF file which will replace the OS so back everything up first.
Make sure you are inserting the sim correctly (i know you probably are but it's worth checking) ones the sims in the phone it should reboot, could be that the contacts which hold the sim aren't raised enough, don't bother fixing them just take it back if that's the case, if the sim has been inserted incorrectly then theres a chance that the contacts may be bent and if that's the case then your warranty will be void, but in all fairness it sounds like a dodgy phone rather than any of the above.
I'd still do the FTF flash anyway, it's probably the best shot you've got, oh and i've noticed that some peoples phones will read sims and others won't so the fact that it works in yours and not hers although weird, isn't conclusive. Try another sim too.
