[Q]Should I use CWM or odin to flash 4.0rom like romow?

I know this is a very stupid question but I just want to make sure flashing with CWM is viable.
For the leaked stock ics 4.0 rom I know I should use odin to flash, but how about custom 4.0 rom like Romow? Should I use CWM to flash the zip file?

You should read in the post how must it be done, you should start in annual kernel 3.9 then install chainfire.repack and so on

There are no instructions in romow's thread and that's why i am here to ask for any further instructions. I bet flashing a 4.0custom rom is similar to flashing Gingerbread rom. Am i right?
Also, some ppl claimed that I need to first flash the stock leaked 4.0 rom then have my phone rooted with CWM installed and finally flash custom 4.0 rom with CWM. Is that really necessary?

There are better roms now than ROMOW's one i think, try flashing Rocket Rom, or the new AOSP

From the instructions given in [02/24/12][Team Rocket ROM][open beta ICS v4.0.3][v1.5][15Tooglebar] daily ROM now! , it seems I really have to flash the leaked ics rom first before installing the rocketrom 4.0.3 rom, is that true? That means I cannot directly install the ics rocketrom from any gingerbread custom rom?

Yes youre right, there is a problem with root a cwm in ics, and you need to da that
Follow carefully the instructiones if not you wont hace fullroot

Just have to ask it right here as well...I went to romow yesterday for testing reasons (just flashed the zip in cwm) but I have to go back since there are too many bugs imao atm.
Just tried to go back to my CWM Backup....now I´m stucked at the bootanimation!
Do you guys know what could be the reason here? And what I could do to get my nandroid backup working again?

Did you flash 4.0.3 directly from gingerbread rom? BTW I've heard many people say their phones were stuck in the bootscreen(The samsung N7000 with no boot animation) when they tried to go back from ics to gingerbread. Seems this is a common problem....

Yes, I came directly from GB!

If you can load the boot animation that means ur phone is not bricked. You should try to download a stock gingerbread rom from dr ketan's post and flash it by odin pc.

When going back to GB, i kinda 'restart' the whole process by going back to Stock ROM via Odin, and redo the root and CWM.
Else, there are strange quirky issue ex. CWM just hangs while wiping the phone.

Should be this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997).
Firstly, download one of the roms from [Older ROMs (Directly Rootable)].
Secondly, follow the [Installation Guide For Older ROM ], the one using odin pc.
You may see below another flashing method using mobile odin, but that doesn't suit you since that one requires your phone rooted before and will keep your root after flashing. The one with odin pc will wipe out all your data and apps(of course not your SD card) and also unroot your phone. That means your CWM and root will all be gone and you have to follow another post to root it again(now this one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)
this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997)teaches you how to flash a rootable gingerbread rom, but not rooted. This one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)shows you how to root your phone and install CWM. I think these two posts are the best tutorials you are looking for.

Thanks mate! Saved it to my desktop...but finally i was able to manage the problem by simply flashing a *fresh* RocketRom again (?!). I thought it would be worth a try...

As far as I remember I made my very first steps with odin after I reveived my note (root, cwm)...rocket has been flashed by using cwm. But yes, my binary counter increased definitely...
...I do have a USB Jig, but in some was I am kind of afraid of going trough this! To fumble around in pure darkness...hmmm i don´t know
Have you tried it yourself?

Actually I've got a yellow triangle together with increased binary counter as I followed another tutorial guide(I should follow dr ketan's guide before).
I think removing the counter with a jig is way too dangerous for me so I don't want to risk it. Simply remove the counter only when you really need to bring your phone to samsung because maybe you don't even have to claim the warranty at all.

[Q] Root XXLA6 question

Hi all.
Finally got a Note and love it, but while I wait for official ICS here in the UK, I'd like to keep stock 2.3.6 GB but safely root it.
There's so much info here, it makes me a bit nervous in-case I pick the wrong method.

Use Dr. Ketan's method!
Go here and follow the instruction for your Rom.
Edit: Just saw your picture, you have LA4 not LA6 on your device, that means that you can flash a Direct Rootable Rom!

Thanks for the reply but I'm a bit confused, my Note shows Build: GINGERBREAD XXLA6 as does the Kernel, so are you saying that it's the Baseband version : N7000XXLA4 that I should be paying attention to?
Also according to Kies it's PDA:LA6 / PHONE LA4 / CSC LA1 (XEU)

yes la4 is the rom version you are using, you will need to downgrade to be able to root

which rom do you suggest I downgrade to and still allow update via Kies?
Will the downgrade via Odin up my flash counter and give me the triangle?

go look at the root thread, there is a link for kj1, which is non wipe rom so all your settings will stay in tact
no it wont give you the triangle because it is a stock rom

I bought the Galaxy Note N7000 yesterday and I have exactly the same android-, baseband-, kernel version and build number. The only difference is I'm from the Netherlands and using Vodafone.
Now I've been looking for a way to root it, but I also wondered which XXLA# I should use for it.. I saw the reply of the downgrade (ofcourse) but I am wondering: those r for Poland and Germany... Or doesn't that matter and I can root it anyway w/o bricking the phone?

Post november roms are difficult to root, best optuon is to go to pre december 2011 rom
Or go to ICS and use cwm. Zip and superuser. Zip method

Well yeah, I get that point, but the thing is: I'm kinda noob with this. To be honest: my roommates rooted my galaxy s for me, but they did it so fast that I didn't get half of what they did..
My eventual goal is to learn how to root a smartphone and upgrade mine to android ics. My current android version is an unrooted stock 2.3.6 and I wanna go for a rooted ICS, but I already start to wonder now if I can upgrade my phone to rooted ICS immediately from the 2.3.6... Could u guide me a little in this?
By the way: sorry if I ask some pretty obvious questions that might have already been answered elsewhere on the forum, but I have been looking all over the forum and just don't know which info I should use from which posts anymore..

If you want ics then it is very easy.
First flash ics and then root it., ics is directly rootable.
I recommend first hard reset on gb rom for clean installation.
All informatikn regarding ics update n root, u can find on first link on my signature.

Well, I thought the safest way to get me ICS on the phone was through updating with Samsung Kies. After this I was planning to put CWM in the folder sdcard/external_sd and Busybox on the internal sd, but...
I got it updated now, but I lost the folder external_sd.. I can't create a new folder with this name either.. I don't actually have an external SD card, but if I remember it well, I didn't need it either. I have seen the folder external_sd for sure in there..
Edit: Bought an external sd card and did the root like u said, but without flashing back to GB. It worked! Thanks alot for the clear walkthrough! Hail dr. Ketan!

What can I flash and what I should not?

I got a GNote International version today and it came with ICS already installed.
I have my basic share of experience on Rooting and Flashing CWM and ROMS on some WiFi-Only Samsung devices, but after 6 or 7 hours of reading different posts and guides, I still cannot understand some things.
I already Rooted my GNote, but CWM disappeared, which I see is normal.
My Main question is, coming from a Stock ICS ROM and Kernel, what in the world should I do to safely flash AOKP Build 38 and retain CWM?.
My current Android version is 4.0.3
Baseband: N7000XXLPT
Kernel: 3.0.15-N7000XXLPY-CL474507
I see I can't flash Franco's Kernel and then use AOKP, so that's out of the question.
What ROMs I can flash if I first install Abyss kernel v4.2?.
What is a binary counter?
I'm really lost here, and I don't want to brick my device, so please help me out with some answers.

I recommend you to play with you're device for sometime until you understand everything beneath it.
After that decide which ROM you want to flash.... than stick with that ROMs installation instructions.
Download everything you need before flashing...
Before flashing custom ROMs you need to flash Stock GB first .
Stock ICS is not safe for all this things.
If you want to stay safe in stock ICS than don't perform Data wipe/factory reset...
Flash a safe kernel like Hardcore Speedmod...

Please, let me know if what I'm understanding is correct.
In order to flash anything safely, I need to go back to a Stock Gingerbread ROM.
Once there, I can flash kernels and ICS custom ROMs.
The following thread shows stock GB ROMs, but which one should I download if I got my GNote on the US with ICS preloaded:

You can flash pretty much any stock gingerbread rom using pc odin. However, there have been some bricks doing this, so I strongly suggest to wait until samsung releases a patch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698977). Now, if you want to flash a gb rom anyway, be sure that you don't wipe while being on an ics kernel.

I did Factory Resets a couple of times already inside ICS with no problems, so I'm guessing that doing a Wipe from Stock Recovery is what causes a hardbrick, right?

As far as I've read, any erase command could trigger the emmc bug. I'm not an expert though, but I guess a factory reset from settings could be as dangerous as a factory reset in stock recovery

The Stock interface is so freaking ugly, that it's better not to wait till the OFFICIAL FIX.
Even if they do that, the interface would still be ugly.
Just follow the safe steps which don't even imply adding triangle:
1)flash the rooted GB (by bovias) (you will find the link inside below link, follow the instructions from there, flash with PC odin)
2)Then CWM via mobile(!!!) odin
follow the first part from here:

3)And then go to C9 Nightlies thread in General and flash it, it looks so beautiful and accurate and has so many features, has secure kernel and is 4.0.4

Thank you for the info. I already flashed custom ROMs. It was a pain to do it with all the risk involved.
So far I tried LiquidSmooth 2.2 and KingDroid 3.
Now I would like to see how I can install Kang's AOKP.
I've been lucky so far, no issues until today.

Putting ICS on My N7000

I just purchased a international Note off EBay. It has GB installed. I am not sure what country this is from but the phone's baseband version is N7000UBKK1 and the kernel version is 2.6.35.7-N7000UBKK2-CL705203. I would like to move to ICS. I need US English as the language. So:
(a) What firmware should I use? I want to use Odin to install.
(b) Is there any possibility of bricking my phone due to the eMMC issue? I have run the eMMC Check app from the Play Store and it says the chip is "insane". But the test of the memory completes without errors. I am not really sure I know what this all means but I want to avoid problems (who doesn't).
(c) I understand the brick problem is with ICS and not GB. Does this continue to be a problem with the various JB roms out there?

Flash stock open German XXLRQ then, look for it in dr.ketan's thread for stock roms in note original android dev sticy.
There are no official jb roms for note yet and cm10 or aokp based custom jb roms are totally safe for wipes and all.

For people who just Dont know what version they need to install u can check this from settings -about,or simply just install kies and it will detect ur version,then u can let kies install it for u or u can download it from dr.ketan post then root it then flash any safe kernel as speedmod ir hydracore,one last thing just remember not 2 make any wipes while using stock ICS thats all.

Hello and thanks to you and the others who have so kindly replied. Does this mean I should find a non-stock ICS ROM to install? I was thinking that going stock would be safer. I was reading this guide <android.gs/update-samsung-galaxy-note-to-official-xxlrq-firmware-update> to updating to the ROM suggested above and near the end it speaks to possibly having to select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ in recovery mode if, after the Odin install completes, the device fails to boot beyond the logo screen. I would not want to get to that point and not be able to do this if needed.
Also, I would eventually really like to get to JB - especially for the on-device voice command processing. If there is a recommended JB ROM that can do this now and avoid the brick problem, I would appreciate recommendations.

ofc you can use ICS Stock Rom. But just to be safe you have to flash safe kernel...Speedmod/Notecore/HydraCore are the safer kernels.
For JB there is no official update available from Samsung for our Note. But you can enjoy it with the efforts that developers are doing for us in XDA.
Go to Android Development Section and Have a look on the Topic Titles.Some of them are AOKP/PA/CM10/AOSP... For Me JellyCore is so far gud. You can find the link in my signatures.

I only know u r now in GB.
GB shld be ok to do full wipe. None reporting mmc brick on GB coz of full wipe.
So....
U can do ur full wipe first on stock GB.
Use pc odin to flash ICS 4.04 LRQ.
Voila.... U r on ICS alrd.
Once u r on ics, and on stock ics kernel....
Pls, do not ever do full wipe.
Unless, after that u root and install ics safe custom kernel, then u r safe to full wipe on ics.

Hello and thanks. I guess it may make sense to bypass the stock ICS which seems to contain issues related to the brick bug and go to something like Jelly Core as you mention. I looked at the page for Jelly Core and see that it says to install using Clock Work Mod and to wipe from a safe kernel first. As a newbie I guess I have some questions:
(a) I am on GB which I understand to be "safe". Is that correct?
(b) Where do I get the CWM for this phone and how do I install it?
(c) To do the "wipe" does that simply mean to use the built-in reset to factory or does this mean something else?

b. When your going to flash ROM, each ROM has it's own accompanying CWM.. so when your done choosing which ROM your going to flash your Note to, when your going to bootup in recovery.. and you get the standard CWMR...
c. Yes, Wiping is synonymous to doing the built-in factory reset on your phone (thru Settings), or the alternate way is to go to CWMR and wipe data. Different Methods, same result.

I am sorry but I am still a bit lost here. Before my N7000 I had a Samsung Skyrocket and flashed it using Odin from the GB that was on it to the stock ICS. I found several guides for this online and it worked fine and easily (although I still feared the brickbug). But this is basically all I know about this stuff.
So how do I flash something like Jelly Core? It sounds like I have to install some other was other than I did with Odin/stock ICS on my Skyrocket. Perhaps I need more of a tutorial on how to do this flashing of custom roms. Any suggestions?

the best and safest way first is to downgrade back to stock GB. Don't do any thing foolish by just flashing a stock ICS (with an unsafe kernel).
Downgrade first to stock GB and work your way up to eventually flash your preferred custom ROM (in cwmr or odin)

I have the Galaxy Note N7000, android 4.0.4, baseband N7000XXLRK, build number IMM76D.XXLRU.
Can someone please explain shortly what is the deal with brick bug and bad kernel.
The phone is notifying me that there is an software update but i'm afraid to install it because i've read that some kernels are bad and if you factory data reset your phone after update, then i would permanently damage the phone.
Also, from what i understood, there is already official jb 4.1.2 available for this phone, is it safe to install it when it will come OTA?
Now, i do realize that probably my question is outdated considering that there is a lot of information about this subject, so therefore i appreciate in advance those of you willing to answer me, thank you!

If you do a factory reset on stock ICS kernel, it may brick your phone. This happens on stock ics kernels. That's why we have custom safe kernels likes philz, speedmod etc.
Official JB is available and if you update via Kies i think it should be okay.

Install the update don't worry it will be ok.. Just don't do any factroy reset on stock ics

Install a safe kernel as who knows when there will be a need for a reset.

Kies if you can... OTA is too dodgy.. PC odin is also good

Firstly install the philz kernel then do a full wipe and then install the jb update(use pc odin to update)
