[Q] SatNav GPS not possible; battery overheats - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I try to navigate with SatNav app the battery overheats and then doesn't charge. Eventually the phone dies.
The first time I discovered this I thought I was going to be stranded and lost. Very fortunately I had AirCon in the hire car and I was able to jam the phone in the cooler vent fins!
It's worst with Sygic, which appears to be a very intensively written SatNav program. It's also the only one I have that I can use abroad with offline maps.
I've tried Waze and Google Maps but even these overheat it after an hour.
What to do? It's the same with a Mugen battery and the same with a Samsung battery. Taking off the back helps a little but not by much.
This is a deal breaking nightmare. Why do SatNav apps even have to have any display anyway?
How's about underclocking? I'm on Semophore 1.2.5 at the mo with the 333 ICS rom which I was thinking of upgrading to v2 of the ROM when I have a spare day to mess around getting everything working again.
Alternatively, if there is no way... would a Motorola DroidPro do a better job (I have one spare)

Kaiser gets hot (warm) after use for a long time

Hi amigos:
I been searching around and I cant find a solution for this annoying thing .
If I connect to my 3G usign my kaiser for more than 10 minutes, the phone is getting extremly warm. I try to put the back light low but doesnt help. I'm usign Dutty 29 apr. Rom and radio version is 1.58.21.23 and I'm in Denmark.
Is your battery draining fast?
Get a battery meter and test that because I had a TyTN that did that...
same here original rom wm6.1 NL

If I where you I would try a diffrent radio and check what aps you are running in background/prosseses. I often use my kaiser as an wifi router and I dont think you gets close to as warm as mine streaming and charging at the same time I abuse it so hard it resets itself, now thats hot hehe. Anyway, some radio are battery monsters for me, its just about to find the best one for youreself.
I have good experience with: 1.58.25.17 in Norway, havent tried it whit duttys.
If not you can try 1.65.14.06 and 1.65.17.10 wich dutty included whit the release.
To 2007HHR: Yes the baterry draining fast that is the worst part. what is the purpose for use a battery meter? Its going to solve my battery problem?
Raiisak I will try another radio, hope it will help me, I never experience a phone that will become warm after using it for a long time. Really annoying

i only experienced this one time when i had my gps turned on for half an hour and my phone turned into a hot potato and battery went from 95 to 15 percent.
u have to realize though that the tilt is sorta like a mini laptop and it will start getting warm after some time unless u give it some rest.
Well I never experience something like it in a windows mobile before, I will be really interesting to know if this is a hardware failure. Have you guys experience something like this in other htc phones?

Unfortunately this is almost unavoidable with lithium batteries. My HTC TyTN II battery gets hot while charging, and even hotter if phone is being used (voice or data). It gets hot to the point that the battery stops charging (at least they have thermal control circuits, it could explode otherwise, lithium batteries do not like the heat).
The same happened with my previous phone, from e-ten. A battery got very hot and damaged while talking for a long time. I have used my devices mostly as a PDA, for reading or playing music, but as soon as phone radio is on, it starts getting very hot.
Hi Vcespon:
THis is horrible, I can't belive with a advance phone like kaiser something like this happen. Is there any firmware that might fix this, otherwise I will thinking to change this phone, this is unacceptable.

That's not normal. If it is the case your most likely have a hardware problem. Same to the OP.
Mine also got warm and was emptying the battery in a couple of hours once the radio broke down.
Other than this, the only cases where the phone will get really hot is when using WMWifirouter to route the 3G connection to WLAN and downloading a lot. Both the 3G and WiFi radios being on and working hard, plus the processor doing the routing uses a tremendous amount of power. But the device wasn't meant to be used that way anyway.
The GPS also uses quite a bit of power so if you have that on on you might want to try turning it off.
When just talking on the phone the device should get a little warm but no more.
The battery meter would show how much of your battery is being drained when idle... mainly shut down all applications and see what the reading is and that would give you an idea if the device is defective.
I can tell ya, mine gets HOT. I sent the first one back because I thought it was defective. Also with a couple different roms it makes no difference. If your using 3G, BT, GPS, or any combination of those, that SOB will get hot. If I'm charging at the same time, it gets so hot it shuts the charging proccess down. I have to hold it over a AC vent to cool it back down.
Over all though, the only complaint I have with the phone is the heat and battery drain issue.
dead phone or dead battery
Do not know if this where to post. But my TyTn stopped charging. The phone is completly dead. Right now I'm on vacation in a remote location with out any access to the local AT&T to get a battery quick. But the problem is that the battery is not taking a charge. The red charge light is not on or anything. I left the phone on the charger for two days and nights with no results. I ordered a battery but will not have it untill I get home in another week. I have Dutty's 6.1 5.2.19199 UC Compliant ROM on the phone and I've been using it for about 10 days now. Everything was working fine. The phone was getting warm during GPS useage and when charging. Right now I hope that its just the battery. But in case its not, I need to know what my options are. Is the phone dead? What other measures are there to bring it back to life? Thanks in advance.
I can say from my experience with a tytn and now a tytnII when you use them rigorously , they will get hot. I guess the real question is how hot is it really getting and what is running on the phone. Is it uncomfortable to hold?
On EDGE data with FlexMail and IM+ online, the phone stays ice cold. On HSDPA the same, it gets slightly warm. When talking on the phone with HSDPA, it gets a bit warmer.
When using GPS+iGO8 or TomTom, it gets rather warm. Add charging and it gets pretty hot. I've seen batterystatus show as high as 42C using internal GPS+iGO8+Charging.
Gets hot + doesn't charge from laptop
I've got a similar problem - Kaiser may get hot when being used as a modem and/or charging...., well I've actually had this going on from time to time and wasn't much concerned about it until now: the battery doesn't charge when connected to my laptop - ActiveSync or modem, the amber light doesn't come on, plus drains fast.
The Kaiser(so the battery) is only 3 mths old (although I use it heavily as a modem) and I guess it's unlikely that changing the battery will help here...
My kaiser gets warm too.. I guess it's because I'm hot.
Never mind
HR fixed it...
You also have to remember that these things have a 400mhz processor in them without any fan. Now when your using that processor to the fullest, it IS going to get warm. This is what your going to get from any high performance electronic item without a cooling fan. It's not unacceptable, it's the way it is. 3G, bluetooth, and WiFi can be very processor intensive depending on use, imagine all 3 on at the same time, not to mention the added heat from rapid battery discharge (which is unavoidable when using the radio).
The designers of the phone are no idiots, they designed systems that shut the phone off if it's going to get damaged. So if your worried about the heat cause it's uncomfortable, don't work the sucker so hard! ;-)
Hi to all and thanks for the replies;
My theory is that if you buy an expensive phone you need to exploit until the limit. I bought the kaiser because is a phone that can give me almost any kind of connection and I can be connect online almost everywhere. I can't stand that If I use the 3G connection for 10 minutes the phones gets so warm. I use battery status too and the temperature is like 42F after I use the phone for 10 minutes.

gps locking on problem fixed

after reading several posts on the forum about gps locking on to satellites
when using any sat nav software i like many others have spent about 3 days trying all the fixes on the forums. when i first got the phone the gps locked on to sats no problems and then one day nothing .
then my missus noticed one thing that i had changed the battery which i purchaced from ebay but the main difference was the new battery was a high capacity version 1800ma which comes with a replacement back to compensate for the extra thickness. so once she pointed this out i ran a test and as soon as i ran the phone with the original battery instant satellite
lock. then i went back to the high capacity battery and i get nothing not one satalite. this is well worth a try. i guess i owe the wife a bunch of flowers
gary
Gary, you should always buy your lady flowers irrespective of her bug fixing skills.
I just got my HTC Touch Diamond and I hope I don't have a problem with the GPS.
Yup
Some of the aftermarket batteries / backs interfere with the GPS.
Check in the accessory forum before picking one up.
I'm using the 1350 battery from HTC (via Expansys) and it works fine (as does the GPS).
I remember seeing a thread about this, and they solved this by putting tinfoil (I think that is the correct word?) between the battery and gpsreceiver in the phone. Anyone knows what thread I am talking about?
any thing els
is there something new for this error ?
High capacity battery - no GPS - tinfoil solution
My GPS used to work with Tomtom and Google Maps, etc... and then suddenly it stopped working. It was at a time when I started to install lots of new applications because the original battery didn't even last a day and I got fed up. I got a high capacity battery, which meant I could start using my phone a whole lot more.
I would never have thought that the bigger battery would cause GPS to stop working. From another thread I decided to do a hard reset - my first ever! That didn't solve the problem.
Eventually I found this answer (just after I decided to buy a cheap standalone GPS!).
Sure enough when I put the small battery back in the GPS started to work again. I then folded some tinfoil and put it on the underside of the battery (between the battery and the phone, in other words) and I have both the GPS and the high capacity battery.
Thank you very much for this.

Battery life suck! so the tilt features is useless...

I think if the battery life is so small, all the spacial functions like WiFi, GPS, video, movies are useless for example for a person that are not carrying an extra battery like me....
I have turned off wifi, 3g and so on to preserve mu battery...
So every time I want to wifi-ing, or GPS-ing like 20-30min I'm scared that I will got in the middle of the day with battery down and phone off....
So like that I'm avoiding to use all the nice features of the Tilt
What you think about it?
I think you're bored with killing kittens in the dark.

Hi There...
You can do what I do... Whenever I use the GPS, I have it plugged in my car charger (I have one of those USB adaptor things and just use a retractable data cable).. I bought my Tilt used, had it well over a year now, and still have the original battery.. I typicalyl get 2 to 3 days use before I have to recharge... and I use Wifi quite a bit (my carriers internet services are great for TomTom and such.. but too slow for streaming or anything that needs broadband)... I dont; charge it though unless it is udner 5% usually.. if it is close, I will play some graphic intensive games liek Worms World Party for a while to get the battery down where I like to charge it at... When in the car, I always use the charger because I don;t think it really charges it while TomTom is running.. Usually I still have WiFi on.. when that kicks off the Wireless GPRS interent kicks in... and then with the GPS chip... and got the screen on BRIGHT when it is in the car... It uses the power at about the same rate I am using it (atleast thats my logic) The battery always seems to be at about hte same point it was when I first plugged it in give or take a few perfect if I have been using it for hours on a road trip...

Good, but I walk in mountains w/o a car , or wifi-ing on the street so..
What radio are you using? You may need to change to a less energy-intensive radio to preserve battery life. Keep the screen only as bright as you need it, as a really bright screen will drain the battery. Also, put the phone on lock and then turn it off to keep it from coming back on when you're not using it. I'm easily able to get a day or two from my battery by doing all of this, and I use the phone a lot.

I'm with:
PC ultimate v 11
radio 1.65.16.25
when I'm with turn off mode (push the off button to turn off monitor) it can last 3-4 days, but when I use it, like, call-5min or music-5min or gps-10min it goes down like 15% and simething like this (beem a bicture to PC - down 3-4%, and so on)...
Check your battery, ROM version,...
With heavy use I can last a whole day (3G connected all the time, maybe 30mins of browsing, 1-2 calls, 3 hours of music, 30mins GPS), with light use 2-3 days.
Maybe try flashing a different radio, to see if a different one improves your battery life. I recently went to a new ROM, and have tried five different radios to find the one that gives me great reception, but doesn't drain my battery in a few hours. Three of the radios drained my battery so fast that I was running out of power in the middle of the day. Another radio had poor reception. My current radio seems to be giving me good reception without draining the battery so quickly. It all depends on what works for your ROM, device and location, so it's trial and error until you find what works best for you.

I have start a battery logging so after wile using/sleep time I can post a mA data to suggest me if it is ok
here you can see my battery log:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/11729584/Battery-log
I used the phone like 2min-video klip, then suspend 10min, then 5min-gpd and 5min-wifi and the result is ~17% down
is it normal?
Redo the same, but starting with a fully charged battery, and run the battery down completely until the phone turns off. It's the only way of judging how your battery performs, not just drain it a few percent as it means nothing at all. Percentage is not of absolute precision, especially if you rarely do full cycles to your battery, it's common to have the meter go down fast the first bit, then stay at 10 or 20% for several hours. Posting the same kind of log would be good.
Other than that, current consumption looks normal.
it's all about tradeoffs i suppose. i don't know of any other device of the same size that does all the things the kaiser does, that has a significantly improved/better battery life. the GPS my nokia 6210 navigator which i use as a backup phone/GPS does last slightly longer, but not all that much.
if you need something that lasts a whole day or whatever on battery, then the best bet apart from getting another battery is probably a dedicated device for that particular activity (GPS unit/netbook/whatever). but then it may not do some of the other things.

[Q] Does N1 heat up a lot when using GPS?

So, I took my Nexus One for a spin using Google Turn-By-Turn navigation and it was like a 25 minute drive and when I got home, the phone was really hot, to the point where i was afraid this thing may be close to being fried on the inside. The touch screen wasn't working properly (not responding to touch and being very inaccurate than normal). I left it on the desk and after 5 minutes it cooled down again and was fine.
What the heck is wrong? is it cause I kept it on the dash board against the dials, that area was kind of warm but nothing to heat up the phone that much, should I be using a cradle or something?
Its a fully stock Nexus with 2.2.1 FRG83D, not rooted and no other apps running. Same thing happened with the free program MapDroyd, so it isn't Google Navigation only issue either.
I don't use GPS much, but when I first got it, I did and it was fine. After about 9 months though its started getting pretty warm, within minutes of using 3g, roughly 38degrees celcius (about 100 fahrenheit), but apparently it's been tested and works fine up to 57 celcius (134 fahrenheit) or something like that.
it's not the gps .. it's the turn by turn navi.. it uses massive amounts of CPU that is what heats up
It is a number of factors, including the previously stated turn by turn navi. You also have the screen on permanently, plus at least where i live, anything in a car not in an air conditioning stream is going to heat up a lot.
I suggest getting a setcpu widget or some other temperature monitoring widget. I also set my cpu to underclock when it gets above 48 degrees C.
Heavy CPU usage, GPS probably generates some amount of heat, but mainly it also adds to the battery draw which adds heat. Screen is on, and you're possibly also downloading quite a lot of data unless your maps are entirely offline.
Also, your phone might be sitting in the sunlight, or in the winter might have the vents blowing over it.
So just the GPS? Not really. Run GPSTest sitting on your desk. You'll see significant battery usage (probably adds 120mAh to what it'd normally use) but it won't get hot.
Yeah, turn by turn navigation does seem to heat it up a lot, even when caching the map offline entirely on a Wifi network beforehand. My phone isn't rooted, but maybe I'll root it and use setCPU thanks.
Will actually heat up more if plugged in. Although mine never gets past 115 or so and this is with GPS and music playing.

battery temperature

i was driving w/ my captivate plugged in the docking system (charging) and with my nav. on paired w/ bluetooth gps receiver. Blutooth also was connected w/ my head set and I was talkign on the phone. this multitasking was going on about for 30minutes... when i took off my phone from the docking, it was very hot, so i checked the battery temp. it said 57C.... It had gone upto 45 C before when I did stability test for about 45minutes but never this hot before... Did i just cheat death and never do this stunt again? or it can survive this high teperature?? I normally listen music via BT and sometimes use nav. at the same time... so I wonder it I can continue to do that or not. fyi I'm on FF 2.5 w/ stock kernel.. not oc/uv'd
Thanks
It won't certainly be healthy for your battery though... I know what you mean though. It's having Bluetooth on and GPS turned on at the same time that seems to drive my temperature up as well (and it's really hot summer here).
I try not to use GPS on it for too long, I get a bit paranoid :/
