Modem recommendation - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need a recommendation for modem that would work well with a carrier using UMTS 2100 and GSM 1800.

No doubt the best thing is to try a few recent ones and pick your favorite. There is a sticky in development with plenty. My wife uses ugkg3 on 2100 with good results but each phone/location is different. you can use service mode to verify your signal.

Would service mode tell me then what bands are enabled for the current modem?
I need to make sure GSM 1800 is also enabled in case there is a drop in the 2100 signal in certain areas.

Are I9000 modems compatible to use on captivate ?

Depends on your ROM/kernel. If you're using a i897 ROM/kernel (like kk4) then no. If you're using an i9000 ROM/kernel (like jvt) or ics then yes. But you need to make sure you flash the correct one for your set up. And no, service mode will not tell you what the modem is able to use. If I'm not mistaken all four gsm bands are active in all the modems.

I'm using SLIM ICS and found the following link with bunch of modems:
http://www.badworker.net/i9000/Modem/AOSP/
Are these OK for me to flash via CWM ?

not sure about those really.
I use these

They are what you need.

[Q] Captivate x Galaxy S International Version

Hi, im from Brasil and my brother is in Washington and he decided to buy the Samsung Galaxy S International Version from Amazon !!
The phone arrived today but here is the problem, a Captivate from At&T arrived instead of the international version!
he is going to use it here in Brasil, with TIM on 2100 3G frequency!
So, my question is, is there any important difference between then?
Does is it work with the 2100 freq?
Can i install different roms on it, because i've been searching about the phone more on the I9000 forum!
I've asked him to check for firmware version and here is what showed up:
2.1-update1
baseband: I897UCJF6
SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
So, should him keep it ? Need fast answer because he is coming back tomorrow!
Thanks in advance!
I'm in Brazil and using a Captivate. I'm using it on Claro Paraná which is basically 2100.
To be honest, I'd keep the AT&T one. There's an easy way to unlock it via a Market App (forgot the name now) and there is a lot of ino for it here.
You may have some issues with phone numbers but I'm still looking into it - so far I decided to remove all DDD codes and carrier codes and use "Operadora DDD" app to apply them on-the-fly.

The SGH-i897 is a quad band dual mode handset. It supports GSM frequencies of 850, 900, 1800, & 1900. It supports UMTS 850, 1900, and 2100 frequencies. There is a possibility the phone may be used with a wireless operator outside the United States however this is not guaranteed. The phone has been optimized to work on the intended carrier it was designed for.

Straight from the Samsung Website.
Thanks for the answers !!!
I was on the run to find out more about the phone because all the previously research was for the I9000 international version and there´s this deadline to return the phone tomorrow!
But after researching all day and you confirmed that it works on 2100 freq we´re keeping it!
The other concern that i saw was the 3 button download thing, but i´ve sent the instructions to my brother and its working perfectly !
Thanks again, cant wait to put my hands on it!!
Not to mention that the build quality of Captivate is way better than i9000

[Q] No data on Telus with my Optimus 2X

Hi,
I bought an unlocked O2X in Hong Kong, and brought it back to Canada.
The wifi and voice work perfectly, but it doesn't seem to find a data connection... what can I do ?
I have the latest out-of the box software :
Andoid 2.2.2,
Baseband 1035.21_20110405
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build FRG83G
LGE version LGP990-V10d
Thanks in advance,

You've bought a phone that isn't compatible with the Telus network.
It will only run on it's 2G frequencies, and Telus don't support 2G data (from what I can tell).
From what I've read, the O2X is compatible with HSDPA 1900, which Telus carries...
Yes the O2X does support UMTS 1900, but I don't think it's that simple unfortunately.
You might find that they don't use 1900 in your area, and you need 850 (as this is usually more popular), how you can find out I don't know. If you look at your signal type, I suspect it will be GSM
Right now it's saying GPRS... I'm in Montreal, which should mostly be using 1900 frequency, as it is the better one for cities...
Did you set up Telus APN?

Depends how you define better, I would have said 850 is better due to penetration.

Yes, I tried using the info provided by Telus :
APN: sp.telus.com
Proxy server: 74.49.0.18
Port: 80
but it doesn't seem to work...
I'd recommend you phone Telus and explain the problem to them.
I know on previous phones I've owned (non Android) I've been sent a text with settings in from my carrier. They might be able to do something similar, or at least point you in the right direction.
Have you used that SIM before or is it a new one?

It's the SIM I used on my Motorola Milestone before.
I called them, and they just told me to remove the battery and put it back on, in order to push new info in the phone... and reminded me that they don't guarantee data access with unlocked phones, which sucks.
Could it be a baseband issue ? I have 0405 now...
I found on the Telus site (can't link because I'm a new member)
they say:
Check device compatibility:
Your device must be compatible with our 4G network. If you have a non TELUS device that uses HSPA technology, it should be compatible with our mobile network. Check your device's compatibility.
Lock Status:
Your non TELUS device needs to be unlocked to work on the TELUS network. What does this mean?

Further advice is to take it into store and ask if they can unlock it. I'm assuming that's the problem, as your connection details posted earlier are correct.
The phone is unlocked (bought it that way). I had a second (very long) service call with them, during which we tried a lot of things, but without luck.
I also tried to change basebands, 0502 broke my cellphone connection altogether and 0218 works as 0405 did.
We already know what the problem is. You have a 2G signal and Telus doesn't support 2G data.
Networkinfo widget tells me I have an UMTS signal...

O2X P990h (850mhz UMTS)

Hi guys,
I've searched the O2X forum regarding 850mhz UMTS (HSPA) and found nothing so far. Does anyone here have the O2X P990h model which supports the 850mhz UMTS band? The only thing I can find is that the G2X supports 850 but has the model number P999.
I'm currently tossing up between the Atrix and O2X (I use the Australian NextG network btw). The locked bootloader on the Atrix sucks and coming from a S-Off'ed Desire I really want custom roms etc., but the O2X doesn't have 850mhz support which is a must for me, at least until now.
Since then I've stumbled onto these:
http://www.mobicity.com.au/lg-optimus-2x-nextg.html
They appear to be in a lot of other online shops as well, has anyone actually got one and can confirm normal O2X mods/roms work on the P990H?
Hi, i get 'h' on mine above the signal bars which i am guessing is hspa. (I'm in the UK on orange.) Or am I getting confused with something different?
Sorry if i am talking about something different.

This is on czech LG site for O2X:
2G network: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G network: UMTS 900/1900/2100, HSDPA 7,2Mbps / HSUPA 5,7 Mbps
so i guess 850Mhz for UMTS is really not supported, at least not on EU model (but i doubt the specs will be different elsewhere on P990)
Actually he's talking about one listed as "LG P990H Optimus 2x 850/1900 "
It's on negrielectronics web site as well as a few others... but it seems impossible to find out any information on it. I myself am also interested..

No, completely different. The standard Optimus model number is P990. There is a 2nd model called the P990H which has 850mhz UMTS support (apparently at least).
So nobody has ever bought or used one of these phones?
where do you see a 850 umts version ?
Fido's LG P990hn is an 3g 850/1900/2100 phone. I'm curious that is it able to flash a p990's third party rom or not.

Don't take this as a definitive answer, but yes, it should be.
As you can see from the included screenshot, the ROM itself (via Hidden menu) lets you select 850 bands for both GSM and WCDMA, even though the radio doesn't support WCDMA-850 on the regular P990, which the screenshot is from. (This is from the new official Gingerbread, but it was the same on Froyo.)
You may run into other problems of course, like the ROM not liking your baseband, which is the one thing you probably shouldn't replace with stuff from the P990.
As stated, I cannot say for sure, but I think you can try without damaging your phone. (Or get someone else to try it on theirs ;-)) Which is my way of saying you probably should get a second opinion. And a third.
Cant you just get a G2X? Theyre 850 i think. Or you could join the dark side and use optus

Just saw this thread and wanted to clarify for anyone else who might stumble upon it.
P990HN from Fido does support 850Mhz and also works with all the custom roms/kernels for P990
I'm brazilian.
In Brazil, UMTS is 850/2100mhz
(990h model)
here in mexico 850 its the 3g band, the 8xxx baseband + canadian ril makes the phone p990h, but the radio its not capable on p990 celphone, you can just load miui or cm7 and load the 8xxx baseband and the canadian ril then you can upgrade your phone
I have the LG Optumus 2x - P990.
This phone has a software lock on the UMTS 850Mhz Band.
Does anyone know how to root this phone and unlock it?
My phone will sometimes connect to 3G here in Canada, but then it reverts back to Edge Network. If I turn my phone Off/ON, it will usually connect to 3G then after a few mintues goes to Edge. Certian parts of the city I'm in will connect to 3G at all times, it's very strange.
I did not know (and still confused) about what I was doing when I flashed my Fido LG P990hN with T-mobile CyanogenMod7. I can operate on Rogers network, but its not stable. Im new to this so I don't know what questions to ask - I just keep reading forums and help files. Michael

ok guys, here what I found.
I started separate thread in Q&A section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521105
I'm in Ontario, Canada on Rogers. Got LG o2x from buddy who bought it in Europe. Then my mystery started. At home I was getting 3G and H, but at work (about 50km away) was getting only EDGE. But buddy with iPhone had 3G all the time. I got suspicios. Tried everything - flashing different ROMs, RILs, BBs... Same sh...it.
Then, my another buddy bought used LG 3D (Thrill) which was sold by Rogers (i.e. official Canadian edition) and asked me to root it. I did and tested - he had 4G (same as H, I guess) all the time. WTF!!!
So quest continues...
I found hidden menu in both phones. There I could force phone to use exact band I wanted. And mystery was solved...
So I forced:
GSM850 - my o2x got Edge; buddies: 3D Edge (the same)
GSM1900 (GSM PCS on phone) - my o2x: G; buddies: G
WCDMA1900 (UMTS_Band_II) - my o2x: H; buddies: 4G
and now...
WCDMA850 (UMTS_Band_V) - my o2x: NOTHING; buddies: 4G
So I made the conclusion that European o2x has WCDMA850 band disabled somehow. It explaines why I have H at home (big city where H is on WCDMA1900) and only Edge at work (small town and H is on WCDMA850).
Now I'm trying to find out if it's possible to unlock/enable WCDMA850 band on this phone. I read that Samsung has hidden menu where you can select bands you want to use.
Does somebody have and idea if there is something like that in LG?
Thanks!!!

There is, but it won't do you much good, as this is, to my knowledge, a hardware limitation. The P990 can not use the 850Mhz band, the P990h and P990hN can.
If you still want to try you'll find band selection in the hidden menu. Dial 1809#*990#, select Modem Setting/Band selection.

That's exactly what I did - went into hidden menu and selected each band one by one and then checked status in Engineering Mode of Modem Settings.
Now I have next idea: all this experiment I did while having "canadian" baseband 823. And i had WCDMA850 line in Band selection (but it didn't work).
Now I'm wondering if I still have WCDMA850 entry if I put "european" baseband 725. This will be my next step tonight. Because if I have WCDMA850 in 725 bb then I would assume that phone CAN handle it but it's disabled somehow.
What do you think?
I just thought that for manufacture like LG is easier to make just one universal phone and then limit available bands using software (or firmware)...
Thanks for ideas!!!
You'll find the (non-functioning) 850 band on European basebands as well.
I'm no electronics engineer, but I think there's more involved in supporting a specific frequency than just the baseband. (I think each frequency needs some kind of dedicated amplifier among other things.) The chip itself is capable of supporting 850 I think, but not the rest of the "supporting" electronics. I may be completely wrong though.
Basically the P990h is the revision which enables the 850 band. I think trying to get it to work on the regular P990 is futile, but you're of course free to try anything you want.
If I remember rightly, in the O2X review by Aandtech, they say that the 850 option is there in software but not there in hardware (on European version). So even though you can select it, it won't work. (At least that's according to the initial review)

[Q] Vibrant modem on Captivate?

im curious if this would work. can i take the modem 'drive' from a 959 and put it on my 895 and have it work? basically what I'm curious is does the Galaxy Captivate have the hardware capability to receive UMTS and restricted by the modem or is it a physically different hardware and only able to receive GSM/HSDPA?
The captivate can use UMTS. The captivate lacks the proper bands to use UMTS on t-mobile. Software will not solve for this as this is due to the hardware wireless radio. The vibrant, however, has the bands needed for 3G on both t-mobile and at&t. You will only get GPRS/EDGE on t-mobile with a captivate. I assume this is what you were trying to solve for?
I was actually trying to take my Captivate and have it work on Wind Mobile (UMTS canadian provider)

Wrong section, but the answer is that Wind and Mobilicity in Canada uses AWS. Their equipment transmits at 1710–1755 MHz, and receives at 2110–2155 MHz
I think the closest would be phones sold by T-Mobile.

No HSPA data only Edge?

I'm not sure if I jumped the gun on my purchase before knowing 100% this phone would work in my region on my network. I have AT&T in the US. I bought an international GT-i9305 Unbranded, unlocked phone. I found out first that the SIM cards are not the same size. I bought a cutter and cut down my larger SIM from my SGS2 and put it in the SGS3.
The SGS3 came with:
Android 4.1.1,
BB I9305ZHALI2,
Kernel 3.0.31-399890,
Build numberJRo03C.I9305ZHBLJ1
I backed up the IMEI, rooted it and installed CWM (though every time I reboot there is no CWM anymore) Ive been using mobile Odin to flash I9305_CWM_Recovery.tar which gets me into CWM just fine and I can flash other modems, Roms etc. I also use Triangle Away to remove flash counter.
My main question is, Everything seems to work fine, but I get NO HSPA data connection? I only get Edge, and its very slow at best. I didnt realize this at first because I was on my wifi network. Is there a fix for this? Or is it because of the version of phone I have that it won't work on AT&T USA network?

Try this. Go to setting > more settings > access point names > press menu key > reset to default, go back into mobile network settings and make sure network mode is set to GSM/WCDMA (auto mode). Reboot and see what happens.

Thanks I have done that. I've also searched the SGS3 Apn settings on the net. No matter what Apn, always the same result.

I believe you are in trouble with this one:
HSPA @ AT&T
"We currently use frequencies in the 1900 MHz and 850 MHz ranges...."
while i9305 operates on 850/900/2100 Mhz.
It's because differences in 2G,3G,4G in all your carries you have so many versions of one model of device

Yes international gt-i9300 manufacture unlocked, UK.
So does the gt-I9305 not have 1900mhz? I spent close to an hour on the phone with AT&T trying to see if it would work. They could see the phone, looked up the IMEI and activated a different SIM for me as I cut mine down from my sgs2. Always Edge data and nothing more. All the descriptions I've found online show the same frequencies as my sgs2. Are there different 9305's out there?

I feel special that I am the only person in the USA that has bought an i9305.:good:
I am pretty sure the I9305 has these frequencies
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
4G Network LTE 850/1800/2600
This is what the specs have always shown. for the one in australia but all i9305 should be the same unless they are i9305t or i9305N
I looked up what australia uses and it does show the 1900 scroll down on this link
http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies
shows this:
3G Hi-band 1900-2100Mhz
The 3G Hi-band 1900-2100Mhz is used by Optus, Telstra and VHA.
Tower Rx /Tower Tx
1920 – 1980Mhz (tower Rx), 2110 – 2170Mhz (tower Tx) using multiple paired 5Mhz and 10Mhz channels
** to be completed **
But you are the first person i know in the US who has bought it purely because you wont be able to have the LTE function.

maybe for Australia is another model but it at least should have diffrent name
But I have seen more sites saying that it does support 1900 more then sites that say dont, I did a quick search on google and the 1st List of search pages when I type I9305 Frequencies I see that Only gsmarena dont display the 1900 All other sites say 1900 Maybe GSM arena is wrong.
Only the I9305T maybe is different but we also have the I9305 and hardware should be the same.
Only difference from country to country is the Modem SOftware

it's pretty reliable source, but I'd say it's 50/50 (50% says it does and 50% it doesn't)
how about samsung:
http://www.samsung.com/ae/support/model/GT-I9305TADXST-techspecs ??
and if it'd have 1900 then shouldn't it work for highaltitude ?
Well I spent alot of today with AT&T both on the phone and in store. Their system will see the SIm card and that there is a phone, but it will say Unknown Phone. They tried to switch me to a 4G/LTE data plan to see if then 3G/HSPA etc would work but it kept getting stopped because it said my IMEI number is not right or unrecognized. No matter what, their system would not take the IMEI number. I finally got a tech on the phone to put in a correct IMEI that AT&T would recognize, however it still said Unknown phone and still therefore would not let him switch the data plan. I am still at a loss because I swear the specs Ive read are pretty much the same as my SGS2 for frequencies (other than /4GLTE etc) So after one week of having a cool new phone that is stuck with Edge data, I am going to have to get rid of it and go back to the SGS2. Sux, as I really like the new phone.
you are not alone.I bought a Gt-i9305 that came from france/orange before doing my homework.i am on t-mobile and a very slow 2g speed maybe i will sell mine also and get an us sg3.
Yup, got mine for sale on ebay right now.
