[Instructions] Beta Testers - Galaxy S II I9100G Android Development

Thread to guide beta testers
Nowadays a lot of development is going on in the I9100g sub form... Just for the namesake its a sub-forum. Its a highly active sub-forum! [Note for the Moderators]
Since the release of CM9 many roms are being produced using cm9 as a base. Even kernels are being developed. So beta testers are highly needed to do justice to various different roms.
Everyone can test the beta versions. But don't just pm the developer for the beta link. Because the rom/kernel is still in a beta phase, so it might brick your phone!!!(From my own experience) Beware testing a rom/kernel is not a child's play... Risk is involved... And remember, only because of these testers major problems are being solved!!
So here's what to do and what to have if you want to be a beta tester. Please do contribute to the forum.. Testing is the least one can do.
Things required: (Basic)
1.Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100'G'
2.USB Jig for I9100G (Jig for I9100 also works)
3.USB OTG Cable
4.Some Basic Knowledge about cwm recovery, odin mode etc...
5.A nandroid backup of your current working rom.
6.Titanium Backup of the important apps downloaded.
7.Odin 3.85 (PC Software)
8.Root Explorer
9.Mobile odin pro / K tool
10.ES File Explorer/ Root Explorer
11.Logcat
Instructions:
These are the instructions that must be followed before you test a rom/kernel
* Never ever forget to take a backup of your current stable rom.
* Take a titanium backup as its easier to load apps once you are in the custom rom.
* Working Clockworkmod Recovery.
* And test the rom properly. Your job is to find loop holes in the rom/kernel
* If at all error is to be found, please report the developer with adequate logs!!
This is not just any other thread... For users like us its nothing. But i have seen many users complaining, shouting at the developers as their android got bricked. Really its so funny to see their frustration. as the devs would have mentiond that they are not responsible for any damages, and its clearly written " Flash this at your own risk " Really none try to understand the amount of hardwork and time spent in building a rom or porting the rom.
So please read this thread before trying a new rom/kernel or as a tester. Hope this thread might save some devices or their frustration. Remember guys its highly rare that a software can corrupt hardware. Most of the times these errors can be rectified by reflashing the software. USB jig and nandroid are always helpful and handy at times!!!!!

[Q] hope i don't get flamed for this question...sorry if i bother anyone :\ :|

i actually have a very small question. am new to this forum and wish to know if our optimus black has any dedicated developer (like knzo) who is trying to port or make ROMs for the BLACK???....
i had an x10 mini b4 and i sold it to get this cell. now even the x10 mini (with it's paltry specs) has a working ICS build and i have a "cake on my face" feeling
i had a talk with MIUI about the support and they told me that our cell will get support by Q1 2012.
but as said, i was fancying a RAW UNCUSTOMIZED ICS flavor for our black...now, am NOT trying to create a spam thread about ICS or a hate thread about LG...
i just wanted to know whether any dev is working with our device??
P.S. - please don't kill me for asking this question.
i asked the admin for a dedicated "Q&A" forum, but nobody backed my request
waiting for your replies
Ricardo is our CM9 dev for LG devices.
this is his google plus:https://plus.google.com/115049428938715274412/posts
I dont think we have a dev for ICS ROM in XDA....
But aprold and knzo should be continuing Nova kernel from CM7 to CM9. so we just have to wait for Ricardo to finish his job!(i think still have some bugs left and camera not working)
EDIT: i think the only working ROMs we have are knzo's Nova ROM and Pay's ROM....and for kernel is Quasar kernel done by knzo and currently what i am using now CM7 #20 with knzo's Nova kernel for CM7(but the current dev has been transferred to aprold both of them are working together!) LG devices are kinda cold(i donnoe about LG O2X though pretty popular) so its not surprising to see that we have not much devs. LG peeps have been telling us that we will have our hands on official GB by November this year but i think none of us have the official GB on our phone yet(they fail in promises) that's why we are using CM7(GB) and waiting for CM9(ICS)

Well we do have some senior members helping us on a number of occasions ranging from simple theming, modding and giving little guidance every now and when up to getting overclocking kernel , but only exclusive dev working on ics rom is Ricardo.
But hey till we get our basic requirements being helped, i 'm satisfied with that; and who knows any time a new dev could be coming just like aprold with kernel project and temasek with cherrypicked kangs... So, i 'm happy.
You can see my signature, i 've thanked a few of senior members in our forum here; a little gratitude from my side.

yes...i have seen his profile in G+, thanks for the lead.
now, for those who want to gain some knowledge about porting or making AOSP ROMs,i have found a nice little tutorial for them...it's very juvenile and lucid. all you need is to run linux on your workstation. as of me, my idiot idiot brother formatted my workstation along with EVERY single DOCUMENT of mine!!!!
and am on an agonizingly slow bandwidth so cannot d/l ubuntu over again along with other necessities. i am uploading the pdf for your reference (if any1 of you are interested, that is)...all you need is ubuntu, VM/cygwin, git/source, patience and time there are loads of other guides if you are actually wanting to port a nice rom(or even thinking of making one)
(now, making a good, flawless, working ROM requires good knowledge about android and developing skills, yet u can give it a try )
once any1 starts the project and get stuck, post the work in DEV section and hopefully some of our knowledgeable senior members can take the lead
happy trying

Motorola Triumph >< Huawei X6 n friends

Hello guys
Based on my investigation several time ago,,I was look up some ROM and development for Triumph n X6 from several forums
For now,,development of Moto Triumph stepping far from Huawei X6,,I was looked some new update ROM especially ICS ROM
I want asking to someone who know about development
What different Triumph from X6?just CDMA >< GSM or more??Is Motorola have individual brand build?
Is possible to get flash ROM based from Triumph??
I'm asking because I found Triumph have AOKP ICS developers
Since edowar who develop AOSP ICS gone,,X6 device development for AOSP ICS stuck at alpha5,,
Sorry if I like blaming or flaming developers,,but I just want to know if X6 can use Triumph ROM or not
Sent from my CSL-MI410 using Tapatalk 2
I don't agree with you. Triumph not stepping far from X6. Both features have the same progress, even triumph camera capturing still not work on ICS while ours already work.
Some devs... Tj and ardX still in progress for AOSP ICS for our device, we also have a step forward for camera. Zuk also available to port it, and I think he will definitely port it to any other rom for this ICS. But be patient, they're working on it. They work to make camera work perfect with video and not interfere with wifi functionality also. After that, here... will be more ICS roms port and mod... Zuk, elol and other porter will get additional spirit to port and may be me also .
X6 can use Triumph rom, but it will not get the signal and may be you can't use touch screen also. Need some touch to port it, but then the features still lack of camera. Camera is a must for me and for some of us. I can't use ICS if camera not work.

whatabout u8800? zuk has some roms from there as well. and u8800 has ICS based on u8860 (huawei honor).
huawei honor's chipset is MSM8255T, mi410 is MSM8255. I've posted the link to the files, but the firmware is only in .app file.. no idea how to extract or turn it into .nb0 to extract the libs and stuff..

The features here meant for hardware related with the kernel. Any port need specific kernel to those device it self, including ours. Ofcourse we can use some library from identic device hardware, but kernel drive them.

so does this mean to get a working ICS rom lets say aurora ICS which is derived from U8860, we need to rebuild our kernel that will function on our devices? because kernels are device specific right?
if that's the case how do people port across different OS ie SE mini pro running eclair with an unofficial GB port? is it because the kernel remains the same?

Correct me if I'm wrong....
Kernel need to build to work on specific device and specific android version, what ever kernel version is, that's so far what I know. Some drivers integrated in kernel, one of them is touch driver which related with touch panel hardware type.
To port rom from another device, we "just" pull the framework of the source rom and push it to the our android version which the framework will work. Of course with some additional "touch" to make it perfect.
To develop a rom from another device, not just port but we have to customize (made change and build from source) our device kernel to work with a destination android version. Also build from source for some libraries and drivers because of related things.
What things should be customize in kernel or libraries... well... I'm not a dev.
Owh I'm sorry mate,,actually I just looking for development team for Motorola,,they have development team focus on ICS build
Sorry if I mistake because I don't know much about this,,our device have many developers to port/make ROM and modified something
But so far I looked,,our device doesn't have development team like Triumph,,sorry if I wrong
I just want to know, how much important development team works/personal developer for ROM build
Cz I think it would be better if our device have development team
Once again mate, sorry if I wrong and asking fool

You're not asking fool... I agree with you if it will be great if we have devs team to work and focus on ICS... but we can't push devs, since they also have their real work in real world . But what we have now are Tj and ardX are still on the path of developing ICS for our device. So for now, they are already a team.

Yes mate,,,absolutly great since I know some device with lower quality than our device got ICS ROM (Before using CSL,I'm Galaxy Ace user and I look at SGA forums, they have Both ICS AOSP&AOKP Build n some ICS ROM Ported)
It's mean if ICS running on our device, absolutly more perfects than the other device
Ardx said,,he still resync repo,,I also asking about this on andro-id forum
Bro Ardx was told me it's repo AOKP
It means he fully rebuild this ICS project,am I right?

Arya (quite Indian Name) ... there is one team, what CK mention already who is working on ICS and that is of TJ and adrX, there is another team for our device, that is of ZUK and Whyzee, they worked together for many GB ROMS . May be after getting custom kernel for ICS from Napstar and after getting ICS ROM from adrX, they can port other ICS ROM too. Even elol may team up with them.
Also we can expect MIUI ICS from CK and FR. for FCKR software they already worked together ...

[ROM] Helly Bean [4.1.1] (8/17/12) - Vibrant - DerTeufel1980

Please note! Due to certain issues, as of 08/26 I have moved on to the official CM10. If time permits, I'll update this OP, but not making promises.
WARNING: This ROM probably still has intermittent emergency dialing issues. Do not use it for a daily driver when you're out or could need 911 or any emergency number. If you STILL choose to use it at those times, it's your own fault!
Let's get this out of the way:
This thread is for DEVELOPMENT! If you have non-development questions...which is just about everything that seems to show up anymore.....go to the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28730705
From DerTeufel1980:
I want to present to you the Helly_Bean ROM. The following description is taken from the original thread over in the i9000 section. You can find his thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775169
This ROM is not the official built of CM10 by Teamhacksung.
It is based on their source code, but with some modifications, to allow the use of /datadata partition

Many many thanks, to pawitp, FaultExeption, Jt1134 and all the other people who commit to gerrit. without these, this ROM wouldn't be possible
What's not working or known bugs?
[FIXED]- toggling the GPS repeatedly will reboot phone.
[FIXED]- mounting of external sd to pc (you can switch to mtp mode in recovery to "fix" this).

Build 08/20 is showing as available. I don't recommend dl'ing it as its caused many to have baseband issues. I've contacted Der to look into this, which I'm sure he will when time permits.
(08/17)New build available.
This is md5 sum:
cd703c25d560ce4c3d33cbfcab724427
Changes:
- compiled from latest sources, but still using /datadata (going to be change probably soon)
- renamed the two navbar menus
- added Facebook sync (you have to install Facebook app before)
- added i9000b to supported devices
- (hopefully) fixed modem/baseband issue
- added possibility to install devil kernel apps to installer
- fixed mms for showcase
http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/Helly_Bean/rom/
Wipe not needed if flashing from a previous version, but is highly recommended. Be sure to flash the add-on also.
TF here.....I found, as often is the case, I had to flash the ROM and let it boot up, then go back in and flash the add-on. After that.....golden!
(08/15)New test build up now.
Why test build?
- Because I have added two new devices, for which I don't know if it is working well for them
- I have fixed the navbar not appearing, but now there a two menus in system which both are named the same. One is for enabling, the other for customization. I am working at integrating the two into one menu, but I did not get it yet.
- ffc support for Vibrant
Install process has not changed, but if you are coming from another ROM/kernel than mine, you should create a folder devil at your sdcard, place a file named device into it, and write your device name in it, valid names are:
i9000
cappy
vibrant
fascinate
mesmerize
showcase
users of mesmerize and showcase have to do this!
Other changes:
If devil app(s) are not installed, the menu is not displayed under system settings (many thanks to phillbring for coding me this).
md5sum is: 3b11a106529f10236d2e6139416bc346
http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/test/
Wipe not needed if flashing from a previous version, but is highly recommended. Be sure to flash the add-on also.
From TF: I love the Cid theme from Annex, but flashing his most recent version sent me into bootloops. I'm assuming he will update as soon as he has a chance.
(08/13) New instructions for flashing. Wipe not needed if flashing from a previous version, but is recommended. Be sure to flash the add-on also.
The files can be found at:
http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/Helly_Bean/
Install instructions:[/SIZE]
Coming from any other rom:
- make sure to have gingerbread bootloaders. (Remember, Google is your friend)
- wipe data/factory reset
- flash allinone.zip
- reboot recovery
- flash allinone.zip again
- flash Helly_Bean_AddOn or Helly_Bean inverted AddOn
coming from previous version:
- flash allinone.zip
- flash Helly_Bean_AddOn or Helly_Bean inverted AddOn
Attention: this is still a test. Don't flash it if you don't know what you are doing/how to get back!
For a new feature cherry-picked last night, go to settings --> system
*************************
You can find the official website for this project here (I don't maintain the site myself, if there is anything website related to ask, please use the contact info from the web site):
http://hellybean.site11.com/download.html
You'll find download links and faq on this site.
The usual back-up, complete wipe (if this is the first time flashing this ROM), flashing of files and fix permissions applies.
***********
One thing I noticed is that if you follow the normal flash procedure, it can bootloop, or at least appears as though it is. One way to fix that is to flash the ROM only and boot up you phone. Then go back into recovery and flash the add-on. That has worked every time it happened to me.
You can find the changelog here:
http://hellybean.site11.com/changelogg.html
For mirrors, please take a look at the thread. if you don't find any, just ask in the thread.
I really didn't want to mention this, but lack of experience by some members seems to require it:
If you are unsure of ANYTHING that goes with flashing a ROM, do research first. If you honestly can't find the answer, ask questions. We are not responsible for any action that happens to your phone.

Now, from TFordham (you can just call me TF):
I've been using this ROM for some time now, and really happy with it. Personally, I think this is the best JB ROM out there. I find it very smooth, and for an early release, quite stable.
I do want to point out that I'm not a dev at all. The Helly Bean ROM is from DerTeufel1980 and his team. I put this up since his ROM is being mentioned in another ROM forum, but figured it might as well have its own home
Something else I want to be clear about is that I have no technical knowledge on creating ROMs, kernels or other things of this nature. I simply wanted to let other Vibrant owners know this ROM is out there. This fantastic XDA community is the place to ask, as there are plenty who know FAR more than I. In addition, DerTeufel1980 is active in this forum, ago if there are issues, he will help address them. While I appreciate the "thanks" button being hit, it is his comments in this thread that should be thanked.

HellyBean 0801 is definitely the fastest JB ROM for the Vibrant because of the included Devil 1.1.0 kernel and the use of the faster datadata partition. All Vibrant users should donate to Derteufel1980 for his amazing kernel and now ROM support. He is the only ICS/JB kernel developer we have right now so we must treat him right.
How does this differ from the CM10 v8? Other than the kernel of course.

Keeping in mind I'm far from the most tech savvy flasher out there, like I mentioned, I don't see a huge difference in most of the JB ROMs. I just happen to like this one a lot. Others may be able to get into far more detail on why it's good compared to other (or vice versa, for that matter, if they feel that's the case).

Again, not a techy. Give it a try, just do a back-up first. I tend to always do a full wipe. Seems like ROMs just run better that way, IMO.

Delete...I misunderstood what you were saying.
I think that DerTeufel has to be the OP.
Did you ask him before put this?
Are you able to answer questions about Kernel, ROM, Modems, UV, NL etc?
Update the proper content of our device?
This is why the "leader team" or the Dev has to be the OP.
Not trolling, just saying: If we want a better Topic it has to be created by DerTeufel.

How's the battery life on this rom? Im getting amazing battery on CM10 Alpha Preview by FE with Devil 1.0.4 test3 JB kernel. I wanna know if this battery's any good before I switch.
Can someone quickly summarize how to get here from Stock? I had done it a long time ago to the ics roms and can't do it again... I"m missing some major step.
So far:
heimdall to stock
root update.zip
install rommanager and then cwm install and re-boot to flash update.zip -> cwm recovery.
Flash this rom
-> results in boot loop.
What am I missing?

My experience from going all the way back to stock is that I had to flash a Gingerbread ROM first, then wipe that and install a later ROM (ICS, JB).

CreditsIn addition to tonyp's original credits (see below), I'd like to thank the following:
tonyp for generating the original awesome work and support for this mod
wkpark and the open2x team for developing the kernel and the SU660 patches
harsh for sharing his kernel sources
Please understand this is tonyp's ROM, not mine. I just made the necessary mods to make it work for the SU660 as a single-CWM flashable zip.
Therefore for SU660 users, what this means is:
No need to modify updater-script to remove the p990 assert. It's already included in the zip.
No need to flash SU660 kernel. This mod already contains one (v3.0.8) (v3.0.44; compiled by me from wkpark and harsh sources)
Working home button thanks to the SU660 kernel
Proper screen rotation thanks to the SU660 kernel
If you appreciate this mod, please hit THANKS.
And, although entirely optional, I'd be very grateful for any donations.

[ROM][CM9] ParanoidAndroid [Userthread]----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What is it?
PAD (Per App Density) - choose a custom density for each of your apps!
PAL (Per App Layout) - chose PhoneUI or TabletUI for each of your apps!
To be honest, this is not tablet mode at all, it has nothing to do with silly build.prop hacks.
This is the first and only Android rom to feature true Hybrid mode.
This rom lets you scale and project every app, every widget, even systemcomponents individually.
Remember, android is modular, everything is an app: Lockscreen, navigationbar, dialogs, popups, keyboards, widgets, and your regular apps of course.
Apps have the capability to switch into various designs or layouts according to the device they run on.
This can result in a complete new experience as many apps will transform to the better.
Now for every element that you like chose a mode (PhoneUI, Phablet/Nexus-7UI, TabletUI) and/or a size.
You are 100% independent of the system DPI which runs nicely in whatever value it has been assigned to.
You do not need to boot your phone into a certain DPI. Neither will most of the changes you apply require a reboot.
You will not suffer from the myriads of troubles which normally haunt you under build.prop tablet mode.
Your market, phone, etc. will all work, apps won't shrink on you unless you shrink them yourself.
This project will entirely transform your device, but retain the aesthetics and the feel of your phone.

I'll let tonyp and other developers to provide the full answer to this. From my perspective, p990 and su660 are similar enough that when tonyp or other developers make a rom for p990, in effect they have just made one for su660. I think as long as you have a working su660 kernel that is compatible with the ROM (as included in this deployment), then you do have a SU660 ROM. (Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here)
Also, let me just remind you that rom development and kernel development are different, and that the developers who develop one do not necessarily develop the others. For example, owain94, tonyp, xxmrhyde, and others have developed roms, while wkpark, harsh, benee and others have developed kernels (of course, that doesn't mean they can't or won't develop each others' categories; I'm just listing what I've historically observed here at xda; hei1125 would be an exception having both a rom dev thread and a kernel dev thread here at xda).

It's based on a guide I wrote before:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850967
I edited the updater-script to allow non-p990 installation, and replaced the harsh kernel that was in tonyp's original deployment with wkpark's su660 kernel. Note that I did ask for tonyp's permission first to distribute this modded version here.
I also don't know how to contact wkpark. You're probably right that he gets just way too much PMs.
thanks for your explanation
Im using cm7 kang 135 ( this rom belongs to p990) and it smooths, I just thought that if any developers create a rom for us, this rom will work smoother
I haven't try this rom yet, but some cm9 rom that I had tried, when I connect the phone to pc, the phone turns off automatically. Have you ever faced this problem?

I haven't tried any of the cm7 roms. I went straight into cm9 and used various cm9 roms for about 5 months now. They all have their advantages, but I think I'm not biased in saying that tonyp's is the latest, most updated, smoothest, and snappiest cm9 rom for the su660 at the moment.
I highly recommend you backing up what you have now and give this a try. You can always switch back if it doesn't suit your needs.
And to specifically answer your question, no, I have not ever had problems of the phone switching off when connecting to the PC. though I should say that I usually push files wirelessly using sshdroid.

More questions
How can you know which kernel is compatible with which rom, I think that one kernel works with some roms and doesn't with the other roms.
These kernel that you listed, they belong to p990, I used to think that we need a special kernel that create for su660 ( not p990 kernel) to use p990 rom.
I hate my english and my knowledge, I hope that you could understand and please correct me if Im wrong

Usually the developers tell us which device they developed the kernel for, and usually it's the device that they have themselves.
And yes, I did list p990 kernel because we can still use them with a few minor limitations. That's the point of the guide I posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850967
As for compatibility of roms and kernels, the only way I know is through trial and error. There are a few guidelines, such as not to use p999 roms or kernels in our su660, and to use ics kernels for ics roms and gb kernels for gb roms, but besides that you just gotta try it out yourself. I myself make frequent nandroid backups and test different kernels to find out what's compatible with my phone and what's not.
As for su660 specific custom kernel development, I also have limited knowledge and only know of wkpark's kernels.
Hope that helps.

It all depends on how adventurous you are and also how much you read and research ahead of time. It is true incorrect flashing can soft-brick your phone -- hence the importance of backup.
But I know the setup I provide here does work. So how about we talk again after you first make backup and try out this rom/kernel setup?

What about jellaxy?

Good Evening to everybody.
I was reading about the Jellaxy Project has been discontinued and i thinked "oh damn... they say there are far better 4.2. roms but I don't like 4.2... i just want the good old Jellaxy's 4.1.2". I think our screen is too little for a lockscreen like that (it is difficult to insert the code), it is more unstable et cetera et cetera...
So... why not? Somebody could continue that project if there are a few people who want they to do it. Nobody else agrees with me?
I apologise because of my very bad english (I'm Italian). I hope you'll understand if I don't know what you mean
P.S. i don't know if this thread is a question so I don't know what to do with that checkbox down there

yeap, i guess there will be no more project for 4.1.2 rom in the meantime, until there are devs who want to develop it again..
But maybe its hardly for that to happen (maybe) because devs (like erikcas, bieltv.3 or Old Droid) will focus only on the latest JB rom, that is 4.2.2 rom.
Why dont you give a try the 4.2.2 JB rom on ur ace? Install it, n try it for a while (adaption to a new rom will takes time), you will like it
There is alot of choices, like:
AOKP jb-mr1 by erikcas
Cyanogenmod 10.1 4.2.2 androidarmv6 by Bieltv.3 (Official maintainer after Wayland_Ace work, and Erikcas)
or CM10.1, PAC-rom 22.0.0, PARANOIDANDROID by OldDroid
The 4.2.2 Rom will become the best rom for our ace s5830, have faith to our ace devs.. they will bring us the best JB rom, its just matter of time from them to give us an amazing JB rom :highfive: :victory:

First, I tried so many roms, but I just like CM... Second, I tried OldDroid's CM10.1 and I hated it; Third, I love the work of these developers, but I think they should focuse on bettere projects like KERNEL 3.0... I just noticed that Samsung Corby has this kernel and we don't... a port would be a very good thing.
