I am locked down with AT&T at the moment but would like to use Verizons data from time to time. I am looking to take advantage of the $20/Month 1GB Tablet Prepay data plan Verizon offers.
My question is, if I have a Samsung Tab can I root it and use it as a hot spot so my Laptop can tether off the Tab??
Thanks,
-
yes! if you're using the stock rom installed (froyo) there is an app preinstalled that comes with the tab that enables tethering. ive used it twice.

Thanks,
And can you confirm that it does not require a tethering plan to do this?
If this is the case I will pick up a Tab asap.
Thanks again.
Disregard that last request...
I did a chat with Verizon and it seems that HotSpot is included in all Tablet plans. So I am golden and off to shop Craiglist.
Thanks again,

I purchased my tab strictly for the tethering service for $49 the week before the new tabs came out and it works great.

Have any of you changed ROMs and still been able to use these features? I am having all sorts of issues with 3G dropping when using the stock 2.3.5 ROM but I can't find any other ROMs that have the Verizon Data Service menu required to activate the month to month verizon plans for the Tab.

Is there any custom roms for the CDMA tab, if so, where can I find them?
Im looking too. I can hear crickets over in the Sprint portion of the Galaxy Tab forums. Im rooted with nowhere to go.. lol.
I'll let you know of I come across anything.

Basicly there is one overclocked kernek and a few roms from the same guy. Look in the development section for cdma roms

I see several cdma roms but the all say vzw im assuming that means Verizon wireless. Will those work for Sprint cdma?
Thanks!!

Nope. Only the ones that say sprint. Or a few that say verizon/sprint.

Ok Thanks for the info! I may have to return my GT and wait for the HTC Flyer.
I got the GT thinking as long as i have the hardware i can flash whatever. But we are all at the mercy of the DEVS. No development no flashing..

I called sprint and had them to cancel my contract! Plus $75 off! Now its becoming a fun toy! The 3g sucks on this tablet on sprint network, the tablet is laggy, and etc......But it's now the greats gadget ever for $130 "for now"
hey what method did you use to root your GTab, and what firmware are you running ?
flash my sprint tab
I have a sprint galaxy tab that is out of contract and w/o service.
is it possible to flash it with a verizon rom and then get data service from Verizon? Does 3D use the same frequencies?
Just brought back life to sprint gt. Awesome rom out icontact.check it out.im loving it

No, the hardware between sprint and vzw is different. You can flash your sprint tab to boost mobile (info in the dev section)
And as far as flashing VZW vs Sprint roms, 90% of the time, the VZW roms work just fine on a sprint tab, as long as you aren't needing 3g. So if you're using the Tab wifi only, don't let the VZW bit scare you away from running a rom (CM7 etc say VZW only but still work fantastically on my Sprint tab.)
Yea the contact rom is great for sprint tab. Overclock and undervolt kernel to use with it.

I am using my Sprint GT as Wifi only permanently. (I have phone service with Pageplus).
I am currently running the 1n1tia|C0ntact_V_1_6 ROM and its great.
Can I flash ROMs that are built for GSM GT's?
I won't ever need 3G service for this tab. Wifi only
Dont think that would work buddy.I hope more Roms come out like honeyccomb or icecream sandwich type so I can download the apps I actually want

ICS should be coming to the cdma tabs. If you notice in the dev forum the GSM tabs got all the work on them and our tabs got left behind.

I want this thing to run what it should be able to run. Is root even worth it on the verizon tab? Seems no one is supporting it. Everything is either wifi our gsm.

You need Honeycomb.
But there I is no honeycomb love for the verizon tab is there? And from what I have read, rooting a verizon tab is asking for trouble!

I think rooting the verizon tab is only sketchy if start messing with updates, roms, etc. I rooted mine the day I got it several months ago and loaded the voodoo plus kernel to overclock to 1.4ghz. Other than an issue that popped up with the Lookout app and finally getting the EC02 update notification to stop with a build.prop edit, it's been as close to perfect for me as I expect from a piece of tech and runs much better than those first few hours I used it prior to rooting. The main reason I wanted to root almost immediately was so I could restore my Titanium Backup apps from my Evo so I would keep all my app settings and scores.
I considered flashing one of the few VZW tab roms available or unrooting to install the EC02 update, but I figure it's better to leave good enough alone.
WiFi hotspot tethering now works for me. On my former AT&T-branded Galaxy S2, this feature was disabled unless I were on the higher-cost data plan, which definitely was not worth it for me. But the unlocked Nexus starts it right up.
This is great for us. For example, when we're on a car trip, my wife can use her Kindle or iPod Touch to access the Internet. Same for anyplace where we don't have a good public WiFi signal.
Be careful. They monitor what type of traffick is transmitted and can figure out that you are tethering. ATT will then automatically enroll you in a tethering plan and charge you for it. It happened to Me with a different device.

This is an accurate statement. I should have clarified - don't use a laptop but an iPod or KF should be fine.

While I've heard of this happening often, it's never happened to me even after a whole 6-7 hours of tethering when we didn't have the network set up yet at my new office.

Interesting...does device type have any merit?
Any idea how this would work on the GoPhone plans? They can't really automatically enroll you in anything since it is prepaid.

Are you sure? Yesterday I tethered my Nexus5 with my Nexus7.... and when I opened a chrome browser on the Nexus7, it asked me to upgrade to a tethering plan.
How can I get my Nexus5 to tether without running into this problem......... I know T-Mobile gives you 2.5gigabytes of tethering, but is there no way around this? even if the tethering is from the nexus5 to another android device?
ATT's tethering monitoring is based on APN only (called mobile broadband). Their only method of Engle enforcement is that all their branded phones lock you out of changing the apn in their stock att modified software.
If you're on phone or wap.cingular (and PTA as well in my experience) you can tether a pc all day long. Been doing it for years regularly on my unlocked S2 then my N4, and I'm currently tethered via my N5 on phone and LTE.

So...I don't have to root and freeze the tethering file to tether? I can just go for it on my N5? I am taking a trip with the kids in the car and it would be nice to turn tethering on for their iPads. Leaving tonight and just got my N5 yesterday...so no time today to root.
Thanks in advance.
This has been an advantage of nexus phones since day one. The native tethering app works. Sure the carrier cab still try to block it from their end or cut you off, so don't over do it.

I've always been able to use tethering on T-Mobile, they never said anything to me about it or blocked be.

I respectfully disagree.
I was always on WAP.Cingular APN and tethered with my note and got auto switched to tether plan with mild usage.
I did not try to cover by using only mobile sites...

I have only received a notification once from ATT about tethering, never happened again and I have not been charged. I think its because my power was out and I really wanted to play battlefield so I just plugged my phone into my laptop and went at it.

This is very odd. I'm not saying I don't believe you, but I've done the same on wap.cingular AND others (but no mobile broadband even in the list on my apns) and I've browsed, bittorrented, etc all without issue from a real pc with no user agent hack. Again that was i9100 (tw and aosp), n4 and now n5. To be fair I don't think I've tethered a pc on the n5 yet but my tablets were fine. Maybe because I've got no contact they let me get away with more (doubtful) OR your Samsung ROM restored the apns to default from the Sim on you at some point and added the mobilebroadband apn to the list.
I HAVE been detected on tmo tethering because they detect via browser user agent. ATT does not require a spoofed user agent, as far as I can tell it's ONLY via that apn. So without mobilebroadband in your apn list you should be safe at least on a nexus or other non-carrier\aosp device.

I tether all the time with my Galaxy Express and S4. While on Jury duty I tethered for 7 hours. I never did anything to hide my tethering, just used an app that side steps the phone home thing. I'm on the GoPhone $35 plan, both my phones have been moded to use the dumb phone plans.
In any unlocked phone that feature would work.

I have a Tab 7 (gt-p1000r , rogers 3g) that I cannot for the life of find a stock firmware to go back to, so I am wondering if anyone can tell me is there any roms that I can use that won't brick my device? (I am rooted and superuser is on)
I don't even care if I loose 3g functionality, as this is just a luxury, I only use at home
A at&t rom might work. Both are on the gsm network. I think you can rake a at&t phone into canada and it will work. This might work. Just look into it. The model for a at&t is sgh-i987.

Thank you kindly, I will look into it, as mentioned I don't even care if I keep the radio portion of it(texting via sim, I have a nexus 4 so I am ok)
The CM 10 version has full functionality, i've heard. CM 11 still has a few bugs, no mobile data. I'm not sure about kang roms, AOKP, they are similar to CM.

I have always used Foxfi to tether on custom roms on AT&T phones and have not been detected as long as I only tethered an android tablet. They could detect a Windows PC unless I used a VPN.
I cannot use Foxfi on 5.1.1 roms on the N910T since it gets an error. I can run native tethering and it works fine, but have only done it a little bit since I am kind of wary about being detected - I have already been warned twice already a couple years ago. I, too, wanted to make sure it was undetectable by AT&T if I used the native tethering instead of Foxfi with its proxy.
I unlock my Samsung Note 4 T-Mobile with sim-unlock code, but I've heard that I cannot use this phone with internet 3G, 4G or LTE i'm outside US. And also I need another code to unlock this feature. I cannot check if I can use 3G Internet or not. Somebody knows that for sure?
