[Q] Bricked? Or dead? Please help... - HTC Incredible S

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me.
I have an Incredible S with Virtuous Quattro installed. I did that 3 weeks ago. Since then I experienced 4 freezes and the buttons (although working) didn't light up at all or just flickered. But this is not the problem, I just mention this in case it is relevant.
I put the phone last night on the charger and realized this morning that the screen was frozen again, I removed the battery and reinserted it. The phone seems to start (vibrates and when connected to the PC it also tells me it loads the driver) but nothing else happens. No screen output at all. I tried now umpteen times, removed battery and tried to press power button whilst holding the vol up button, all to no avail.
Do you have any idea?

Try volume down + power ..

Tried that but phone doesn't react at all, doesn't even vibrate as it does when pressing vol up + power or power alone :crying:
But thanks for getting back!

Is ADB working? You can't enter the bootloader?
Some have had success leaving the battery out for a while, and then putting it back in and turning it on
Not saying it WILL work, just a suggestion
And I'll try not to scare you, but it is actually is possible that you fried your eMMC chip pulling your battery Seems to have happened a few times on Desire S and Incredible S :/

Thanks for that, I think the latter is what happened, the phone just doesn't do anything. I think it is time to bin it and to get something else

Before you bin it, perhaps take it to HTC and tell them it has stopped working, and that it happened when you were charging (which is true)
If they can't turn it on, they can't see it is s-off
and will replace the motherboard
IMHO doing a battery pull at the wrong time is all you did mate, its HTC's fault for using faulty eMMC chips. Doing a battery pull is not voiding warranty as AFAIK
Is it under warranty? If it is, then its worth a try instead of binning a $300 phone with one fried chip

Had the Same issue gave it to hTC they Gave me any entire new Incredible s

Thanks guys, I will give this a go.

I do have the same problem now , its not under warranty , any other way to fix it :crying:

Same but different
Well I have the same issue but only slightly different. I can't access the bootloader nor the recovery mode. I don't know why. I'm currently using cyanogen 7.2. At first when I flashed it,everything was fine. Untill one day,my upper screen(status bar) can't seem to respond to my touches. Day after day it just got worst. Till one day,I my IncredibleS just left me a black screen but there were lights on the 4 buttons(home, back key etc.) I tried using the battery pulling method. Sometimes it works, sometime is doesn't. But even so,my bootloader still persist to show up. I'm a S-ON by the way. Any idea how do I solve this? And yes,my warranty has expired last may. :crying::crying:

G1 Black screen, Cannot get to bootloader

Hey, I have been given a phone off a friend to fix but it wont turn on. Booting normally, I get a vibration and then the backlight comes on but i cannot see anything. When i try to boot into the bootloader by holding the camera button and powering it on, the backlight comes on but nothing else. I cannot see the bootloader. Under both circumstances, I cannot turn the phone off. I have to pull the battery to turn it off.
Does anyone have any suggestions about a possible fix? Thanks
Havie you tried send when trying to enter bootloader? If it resets then you can still get to bootloader. If not, your friend has soft bricked and only way is to JTAG which takes strong hardware knowledge and steady hands.

ok im having the exact same problem. actually i thought it was a battery problem so i spent 77$ on a 3700 mAh new batter i guess tripple life... and got it yesterday booted gave same problems. black screen where T-Mobile should be yet the rom loads with scribble screen meaning u see part but it looks like the pixels are messed up. so actually decided to resort to what someone told me a Factory Reset so Pressing Camera + Power i got a Black Backlight screen yet wont show... and I cant turn it off without Taking out the Battery this has become a issue after installing cyanogen 5.0.7 T5... since then i Re-rom'd to superbad 1.2.5 same problem screen scribbles and stops im thinking did I fry it i dont even know how to google my problem because its pretty unique it isnt a battery issue its something in the hardware ... or am I wrong please send us some feedback... ill keep this thread in mind
Sorry, what do you mean by 'send'. I am a complete noob when it comes to G1's. I have worked out i can shut off the phone by holding call + menu + end but thats it. I still cannot see anything at all on the screen. I still only get a vibration on boot. How would I know if the boot has been sucessful but i simply cannot see?
Could the flex ribbon cable be nackered?

1. Battery charge is full
2. it wont turn on and when pressing vdown + middle button + power button nothing happens just black screen always.
3. Taken the battery off number of times and then also tried, No Luck.
4 Even the computer wont even recognize it.
Its just a Dead Screen no movement in screen tried all possible step No luck , it all happened suddenly.
Its just the same as it came from company (No Root not even opened its just like new phone.)

How are you sure that the battery is good and charged. Normally after one year if the usage is heavy, the chances of battery down happens. So make sure battery is good. Secondly you mentioned volume down button, how about vol up button ie recovery mode?

This happened to me as well last week. Tried everything but failed.
I did below steps and my phone is up & working
1) Remove the battery and keep it in a dry place for 4-6 hours (Very important step to make this work)
2) Place the battery back into computer and do not turn ON the phone
3) Plug the phone to wall charger and charge the phone for at least an Hour (I kept for 2 Hrs)
4) Remove the charger and gently press the power button for 15 secs
5) This should turn the phone back ON
Above steps helped for me. Let me know if this worked for you also

Ankush,
In your case I can think of only 2 things
1) If you have CWM installed then
press and hold "Volume UP Key + Power Key + Home Key" all together for 30 secs (may be a min) and see if you get recovery screen
If yes then all is ok & you just need to flash a new ROM
2) If you do not have CWM then
press and hold "Volume Down Key + Power Key + Home Key" all together for 30 secs (may be a min) and see if you get a custom screen
If yes then you can install custom ROM (or original ROM) using ODIN.
Let me know if anything helps you here

This step kinda weird.. Since I my note never get wet. I hope it will work.. I tried it later.. I dont have much budget to upgadet to Note 3 now. :crying:
Same kind of error
Over the night my phone closed. When I try to open it, on the screen apeared "Insert PIN to decrypt your ~something~ ". I never encrypted my phone so I tried to restart. I got stuck on the samsung logo. Then I removed the battery and put it back in and my device never started again. I have 2 batteries and none of them worked. I can charge the batteries independently and this is not the issue.

Have the same problem right now.. did you find a solution eventually?
Same happened to my device today. Had trouble with some apps before. Wanted to play back a two days old backup. But my phone never woke up again. Shut down forever. Never got to recovery. Had the latest cm11 nightly. Now its dead! RIP. My dear friend. We've gone a long way together. Never intended to replace you anytime soon. But I can't be without a Phone. Moving on to Galaxy S5 now. Hope it can fill the gapp.
Same here, completely dead after a reboot. I took it apart but I see no damage or signs of burn damage anywhere on the motherboard or other components. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot and find out specifically what happened?
i am not sure, mayb the phone is design to last for only certain years, new apps launch make the phone in applicable for be running with latest apps and everything. Or mayb the phone is design with a timer to self destroy its chip or component after specific numbers of days being used??

HTC one won't turn on, No LED, no flashing Home/Back button

I upgraded to an HTC One a month ago in T-Mobile and now randomly the phone won't turn on. The phone is rooted, unlocked, custom recovery, and has the Android Revolution ROM. I installed everything the first week I got it and it has been working perfectly fine (No freezes, battery discharging has a good rate) and everything works (Wifi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth). The phone has not been dropped, water damaged, or exposed to any excessive heat, so it should not be having problems.
Yesterday (9/14/13), I was using the phone just fine around 8PM with my friends in a restaurant and everything seemed fine. A few hours later when I was walking down the street, I take my phone out of my pocket and when I hit the power to wake up the phone nothing happened. I pressed the power button for 10-20 seconds and nothing.
When I got back to my room and plugged it in, the LED did not turn on or anything and when I pressed the power button again after being plugged in, nothing happened. I charged it all night and decided to work with it today, but nothing has helped. I have tried holding the power button and volume keys for minutes, holding power button and nothing. When I plug in the phone to the PC it detects it (Windows USB sound in) and when I press the power button for around 15 seconds it makes the sounds but then it makes the removed usb sound.
Since the phone is Rooted, unlocked and has custom recovery and rom, I'm not sure warranty would help, ALTHOUGH since it doesn't turn on and physically is not tampered with, they could get it to at least turn on.
Please help me out here as I am a college student and really need my phone for work and to stay in touch with my parents. Thank you, and I apologize if I didn't follow a posting guideline.
P.S. One of the causes could be a drained battery, but the charging all night should have helped.

Try holding the power button and volume down buttons down, while holding the proximity sensor directly under a very bright light...
This actually happened to me on my first HTC one I couldn't get it to do anything I ended up sending it to HTC I knew they would deny my warranty claim because of the bootloader and ROM but I knew they would have to turn it on yo figure it out. They called me to tell me that it was not covered and said it would cost 215 to put it back to regular I denied and paid the $35 diagnostic fee when I got it back I booted straight into fastboot and flashed my backup.problem solved

This actually sounds like a great, thanks , but before sending it out I think I would like to try other solutions since it would suck to not have my phone for 2-3 weeks. Also, how long did the whole process take for you? (Sending it out, "repair", and getting it back)
This happens to a guy in another thread. He fixed it by leaving it in the wall charge until the red LED turned on, it took 4 days on the charge.
Hey it actually only took about 1week take it back to your carrier have them send it for you. I also heard about leaving it on the charger for a long time I tried over night and it didn't work the next thing I did was send it to "repair" but if you have the patience leave it on change for a few days first

I have a Verizon HTC One exhibiting the exact same symptoms. The battery went dead after a long day and it will not turn on or charge. I have held the proximity sensor in bright light while powering on and while holding both vol up and power. Neither seemed to change the problem. How bright of a light are we talking? Thanks in advance. I am also curious why this works....

Its so that if the phone is in your pocket it won't start up as the proximity sensor detects the phone is in your pocket so tells it not to start up. Sometimes the sensor doesn't work as it should and needs a really intense light to overwhelm the sensor and let the phone start up.
Bobbie
Put it under a desk lamp!
I had the same exact problem. My phone couldn't turn on after it reached 0% and there was no orange light when charging. I put the phone right under my desk lamp and held the power button for 15 seconds and it turned on. Thought people were just trolling... The battery was at 1% when it turned on. I already left the phone in wall charge overnight. Guess it was not charging very well. Thanks for coming up with this solution!
It worked!!!
WOW The light over the sensor worked for me too!! I'm glad I came to this forum first!!:laugh:
Doesn't work for me
This REALLY sucks I just got this HTC One used and I was using it all yesterday and this morning with no problems. Then all of a sudden a couple hours ago it just shut down - I was just browsing the web, so it wouldn't have overheated.
Now, it won't charge (the LED doesn't come on) although it was at about 50% when it shut down. I can't get into the bootloader or recovery, and ADB doesn't recognize that it's plugged in (despite Windows playing the little jingle indicated it's been connected).
Ever since then I've been scrounging the web for answers, What exactly have you guys done for this light trick to work? Because I've held it under a bright LED and under a desk lamp with a 13W CFL bulb, while holding power + volume down, but haven't had any luck.
How long have you guys held them down for?
I haven't even seen the capactive buttons light up (although it's just kinda hard when you're holding it under a light, so maybe they are flashing I just can't see) and the only sign of life from this is the fact that Windows installed Qualcomm drivers and plays the jingle indicating that it's detected a device.
EDIT: Forgot to include, I've been trying to leave it sit charging (one person mentioned their friends' One worked after leaving it charging for 4 days - I'm not sure I can wait that long, but if I have no other option I will).
Also, should I leave the SIM in or would it not matter (personally, I don't see that making any difference whatsoever, but I really don't care at this point)? And should I alternate light/darkness while holding the buttons under a lamp, or just leave it under the light and hold them? (I've tried all of these things, but I'm willing to pursue whatever avenue had the greatest success rate).

Ya, I tried looking into that before, and there's nothing there. Now I'm trying to find out what/where that Qualcomm driver is that was installed.
EDIT: I DO see it in the Devices/Printers as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3).
I've also installed HTC Synce Manager, but I'm not sure if that just automatically installed the drivers or if there's something I should do to manually install those.

Sorry to hear that. You are hard bricked, send it to warranty.
Edit: The motherboard is fried and HTC would have to change it. The phone is used so contact the seller and ask him for warranty information.

Well, since you're under warranty, doing anything else just doesn't make sense. And using jtag would require you to open the phone, and trust me, you don't wanna do that to this phone.. Just out of curiosity, what are the first 5 digits of your serial no?

[Q] Phone won't turn on, red charging LED stays on, hardware buttons lit

Hey guys,
I left my HTC One to charge and when I tried to unlock it, it wouldn't respond. Right now it's a blank screen, the red LED is on even when I unplug the phone, and the hardware buttons are lit. I've tried to restart the phone by holding the power, holding power + volume down, but nothing is working. Device isn't showing up under adb or fastboot devices. What is going on? How can I fix this?
Help me out. Thanks!
-Coby
Edit: Recently this has been happening to my phone frequently, but I am usually able to get it to restart doing the methods said above. This is the first time I can't get it to do anything.
Put it under a stronger light and longpress power + vol-
Try this
I was actually searching through old threads and found that same answer and tried it. I can't believe it worked! Thanks! Why does this happen though? And will this hopefully prevent it from happening later on?
Are you rooted with a custom rom?
However, idk why it happened

I have 4.3 Google Edition on my phone with TWRP.
I'll remember this trick next time though. Thanks again!

Why the stronger light? Im confused! :cyclops:
This has worked for me a ton of times too, I guess it must just trigger something with the light sensor the phone has and wakes it up.

It happened to me when i was rooted and used CWM.
It happened everytime i let the battery run down completely.
I havent rooted my replacement yet and when i let it run down, charged it for ten minutes and it booted straight up.
Seems to be an issue with the phone reading the charge state of the safety circuit in the phone. Mere speculation but i havent heard of it happening to anyone who wasnt rooted with custom recovery....

Can you please give me a little bit more details?
I have exact the same issue: The battery ran out completely, then I can't charge it or turn it on.
I have tried
1. with charger connect to outlet, power + vol-
2. with charger connect to PC, power + vol-
3. under desk light, without charger connected, power + vol-
Nothing worked for me.
Some questions:
- Should I connect the cable when I attempt to turn on the phone?
- Is normal desk fluorescent light "bright enough"?
- Should I move the phone under the light first then press the button, or the other way around?
Thank you for your help!

If it is completely stock, it seems to be a hardware problem. Either mainboard or a fault in power circuit. You should consider returning it for repair.

thanks for answers, after a little playing with it i don't have any idea how but it got to safe mod and was running ok, and when i rebooted it got stuck again, no idea how again it booted ok! this happened before but after a few seconds buttons blinked and a pop out said press and hold home button to restart and a count down for 3 seconds!
I guess the problem was with volume key/power button that got stuck !? because when i got into recovery and was fast enough to pres volume down the power button random ally worked ! after googling i got to phone but flashing bright light into sensors and covering it ! this is ridicules but worked few times and phone boots fine to OS with sensor covered! it turned off again after some time but i turned it on again with covering light sensor again and hasn't acted weird yet ! (my father also dropped hes phone and volume button place is damage a little)
this is the weirdest thing that ever happened to me why is it acting like that? he's phone is out of warranty so he can't do anything anyway!

As I said, it probably is defective. After the mentioned drop, something might be broken. The only way out will be repair service, warranty or not...
