Does the Nexus 7 have hdmi out via MHL adapter?
Doesn't say on the spec sheet and I wasn't able to watch the keynote today to see if it did.
Check out around the 9:00 mark of the keynote. Whether it makes it to production is to be seen but obviously they are putting video out.. also on the Google Play Store under tech specs they don't mention the Galaxy Nexus has MHL.. but it does have it so just because it doesn't list it on the N7 page doesn't mean it won't have it- just have to wait and see
Engadget says there is but I'm hoping that they will confirm it. Can't post the link yet but it's in their review.

The Play store does list that the Galaxy Nexus has "Video out over Micro-USB" under features. I really hope the N7 has MHL but I'm starting to get a bad feeling...

Check out this forum where they show a MHL/HDMI connector on the Nexus Developer Tablet, but the production Nexus 7 that is for sale in the Play Store doesn't have the connector.

I just looked it over again and don't see it listed anywhere? Either way we know it has it
As for that third mystery port if you look at the keynote link I posted its clear they are hooked into the middle port which is the micro-usb.

Update: We received some bogus information on the MHL. We've now confirmed that the Nexus 7 does not support MHL, meaning there's no way to connect this over HDMI to get video output.
Engadget has confirmed that it is NOT shipping with MHL support.
The developer units connected to TVs at google I/O have hdmi ports as shown:

Well that is ****ing stupid. I guess they want us to all buy that damn orb to watch our videos on. **** that. Not getting it now. I will wait for a complete tablet. It's even more insulting considering that it shouldn't have that much of an impact on price. I love TV-out considering I travel quite a bit. Looks like I need to get a developer one somehow if I want HDMI out. Probably no usb OTG either.
So I'm guesing MHL support needs to be in hardware.. and something software can't alleviate.. right? X_x Unfortunate though I've never put anything on my TV through a device considering I have a computer near by to do that.. :T

It is hardware if the Touchpad is anything to go by. It may be there lurking in the shadows but I highly doubt it. Considering the developer ones have an HDMI out port and all kind of pushes me to doubt it territory. It's is so odd to have something clearly showing TV out of some kind then not giving it to people. Tegra 3 was all about getting people to give up their consoles and all of that crap but how can someone do that if it is tied to a 7 inch device? So strange.
Makes no sense why they wouldn't include it other than cost cutting honestly just another strike against it.. watching the keynote it looks like nothing is hooked up on the left side where that hdmi port is just the middle and the mic port?? baffling
I hope you are right. I have been burned too many times with all the I hope this is included and the engadget review kind of seals it.
What I'd like to see is some sort of dock that attaches via the pogo pins and does hdmi out. I think this is more likely.

Cancelled preorder.
Was willing to live without memory expansion slot, but add to that the lack of video out is a total and utter deal breaker for me.
I'm sure sometime shortly after the Nexus 7 ships, a similar device will come out with these options for a similar price.
Most newer HDTV's support DLNA which works great. There are some good free DLNA apps on the marketplace too. BubbleUPnP and iMediaShare Lite are both really good. The paid iMS is better though as it does YouTube in HD.

Does anybody know of a dock that works with the XT720? I found one from Amazon for the droid that since the micro USB port looks to be in the same place it looks like it might work. I just didn't know if anybody knew of any or knew if this one worked.
I've been told that the docks available that appear to work for our phone will not work due to the positioning of the USB port. Ours are upside down from the droid's or the motoroi's. Unless someone knows otherwise.

Why then included the possibility of docking station, if it's not for milestone XT720

bro, i've been googling this for a while.
3 questions:
1-Is there a dock APP? (or an app that any time I charge my xt720 the app starts?)
2- is there a way to put music though usb port?
3-do you have any link XD?
tks!
Just put a decent strength magnet on the back of your phone and move it around next to the camera and watch what happens, It's pretty neat. Too bad Motorola doesnt have a dock available to take advantage of this feature.
its available, and i have it, but for some reason moto is not putting it up for sale(perhaps other than in korea)..
people who got their XT720 from Starhub Singapore received the dock as free gift, and it does put the phone into multimedia dock mode where it will function as a deskclock/media player.

Here's a link (I don't know why it was hard for me to find now as well...): http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/2425-how-diy-media-car-dock.html
There are dock apps, check around for Droid/Milestone Dock in android market. I tried one once, that worked fine, but I think it only works for 2.1 so prob won't be compatible with Dexter Froyo. I think there are others that do. Check around. I don't know about making it turn on specifically when you charge the phone, could be though.
For myself, I want to get the Spider Podium dock because there are so many uses for it (i.e. dock anywhere at any angle, tripod for the camera, etc...). Only thing is, I don't know how I can get a magnet on that.... guess we'll find out once I get one.
Thanks for the link syrenz!
Google returned a lot of finished docks and few not so good step-bystep instructions.
The Lego dock on the link might be just what I need.
Only thing is, I don't know how I can get a magnet on that....

Is it easy to find one of those spider podium in Ottawa or are they sold online only?
I can confirm the Droid 2 dock WILL NOT work for our phone. Everything is the same. same size, but as earlier mentioned the usb port is 180 deg off from ours. Again Motorola sticks it to XT720 owners.

I have been searching for both a vehicle mount as well as a desktop dock for my Nexus S since I got it in December. While there have been a few 3rd party solutions trickling into existence, it's nice to see some official Samsung love! I can't post links yet, but check it out on their website: samsung.com by searching for ECS-V1A3BEGSTA or BECS-V1A3BEG (both seem to be model numbers). There currently isn't a price and if you add it to your cart it says it's on back order (for $0). But at least we know it's coming! Hope to see an official desk dock soon as well.
Also, interesting, it says it has an integrated charger (which is one thing I really want in a car mount), but I fail to see any evidence of it in the pictures. I'm curious how it works. I would also really like to see an integrated audio output, preferably (if possible) through the same micro USB connection as the charging and then allow for the 3.5mm output to split from the mount. This is what I used to do with my original MT3G and it was great to only have to make one connection to the phone.

Interestingly the back plate of the dock appears to have a cutout for the camera and speaker, but they are in the wrong position (wrong side in each case) given how the phone sits in the dock. I am also curious how they are going to do integrated charging. Perhaps those images aren't a final product shot.

Indeed, this would make more sense. I'm unsure how they would have integrated charging unless they somehow had a different back plate for the phone that would allow for conductive charging.
I'll still pick it up for $40 when it's available. It's a lot better than the the "universal" options out there. It is too bad the Nexus S doesn't have the contact/charging pins like the Nexus One did - that was a nice car dock to own (although a bit more pricey).

Hey, I purchased a 16GB model, with the intent of using USB OTG to use in conjunction with USB flash drives like we can with basically all other phones these days - but obviously it's still my fault for purchasing on the first day without knowing that USB OTG isn't supported on the Nexus 4.
Now that it's pretty much all but confirmed that USB OTG isn't working on Mako, maybe we could star the 'bug' on the official android bug report website, and maybe at a comment to voice opinions that some of you (as well as me).
If we all star it & maybe add a comment, it could help?

Please don't add a comment. As noted in that thread, adding a comment spams everyone who has previously commented or starred. If you have something new to add, fine, but if you're just posting "Yeah, this stinks!" or the equivalent, please refrain.
(Anyhow, I'm not sure how much that bug report will help; it seems most likely that the hardware just doesn't support USB host mode.)

I'm holding out hope that it's a software issue at this time until it's confirmed by Google. I know they wrote Mako can't supply 5V but even with a powered USB hub devices don't work.

I'm not entirely sure this is a bug. It may be a design choice combined with poor documentation.
Look here:
http://support.google.com/nexus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2809827&topic=2809758&ctx=topic
This page clearly says "USB is not supported for connecting such devices."
It appears to me that USB OTG is not supported on the nexus 4.
We can keep our fingers crossed that this is fixable via a software/firmware update. Although I'm concerned that that USB OTG is hardware incompatible with the Slimport display solution LG has chosen. Both USB OTG and slimport display use the micro USB connector's pin #4 for different purposes. USB OTG needs a cable that pulls it to ground to indicate to the phone that it should operate in USB host mode. I'm less familiar with slimport, but from what I've read it seems to perform some signaling on pin 4 to enable and stream video.
If the two really are mutually exclusive, I personally wish they had ditched slimport in favor of USB OTG since I can (eventually) mirror the display using miracast.

If you're holding out hope, I appreciate your optimism but it probably isn't going to happen... I'm considering calling up Play support and asking for a refund so I can get a 16gb, even though that probably won't happen for a few weeks,
BTW... just called the play store. They will NOT return your device because of this issue. Even for an exchange (I just wanted a 16gb) I don't understand their logic but because they changed their documentation, I guess that removes them of liability... IMO that does nothing of the source. I'm filing a BBB report now, which is something I never thought I'd do to google... this is BS.
Class action is probably the best way to handle this. I'd much rather have USB host mode.
I voided my warranty.
I bought the Nexus 4 under the assumption that I could at least get USB OTG to satisfy the lack of a micro SD card. FML.

Call again and talk to someone else, as long as you are within the return window, you can return for any reason at all, with a restocking fee.
Or you could scalp it on ebay to and make money on the whole deal  I'm just glad I didn't know about OTG when I purchased it, or I would have gone 8GB.

So I am usually a lurker on XDA, but I thought I'd get the community's thoughts. I'm a fellow Nexus 7 owner and I want a dock that uses the pogo pins. I'm tired of waiting for ASUS and I also happen to be a mechanical engineer that works in the consumer electronics industry. So, I've mocked up my own design. It's similar to the ASUS design and will have USB charging and audio out. The only way I could bring it to market is Kickstarter.
Before I go through that much effort (Kickstarter has revised its approval process) I want to gauge demand. The sale price would be $30. I've made a poll below to streamline things, but feel free to add comments. Rendered concept below. I am also considering adding stereo RCA outputs as well. Would you want that?

|UPDATE 1|
Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm still in the early design phase so feedback helps. To address the request for speakers: at this point it's not something I'm looking to add. It adds cost, development time and complexity. Depending on how well things go if I put it on Kickstarter, a speaker option may be considered. Also, now that I've seen there is some interest, I refined the design slightly to slim it up. See below:
Would adding some sort of HDMI out be too complicated or difficult?

Unfortunately, the Nexus 7 doesn't have any method of outputting an HDMI signal. In fact, the pogo pins do not allow for data, just audio and charging.

At any rate, I have never used kickstarter, so as long as I can pledge without using paypal (we had a falling out back in 2005), I would be happy to help out with this!
Add a holo blue charging light and I'm in for one..

I would kickstart for sure, i'd love to get my hands on one.
Nice idea, keep us updated :good:
I was close to support it but since Asus is finaly realeasing their dock, i'm unsure there is still a large market for it

Source???? It's WAY too late for the Xmas market. It should have been onsales 6 weeks ago to catch that....
I would kickstart it.
If you could figure out a way to make it with external speakers instead of an audio jack or (maybe I am getting ambitious here) if possible external speakers AND audio jack and I would pay the 30 dollars

I'd personally rather not pay to have a below-par amplifier included.
well, if you WANT to people buy your dock, putt 2 USB's. i would buy a dock, but a dock like this needs a USB ports. so everybody could use mouses, keyboards or harddrives.

I would love to, but the pogo pins do not support USB OTG (needed for keyboards, usb drives, etc.) That would require connecting to the micro-USB port. Also, as of now, charging while using OTG is almost non-functional. It may be possible with the Nexus 10 (6 pin pogo) but not the 7.
I'd buy it if available on Europe

Fine then, maybe I will make one myself!.....maybe.
I just can't think of a good reliable material that doesn't require big machining tools to work with it.
I have been waiting for years now for Amplitube for Android, Ik the developers always blamed Androids lack of low latency audio
in the android sdk... Now all of a sudden its out and available for the Note 4 as a Galaxy Gift exclusive with no other mentions of it?
Something smells fishy here.

Not much use without the iRig HD-A which is an Android optimised version of the iRig hardware, and not out until some time in November

Well whaddaya know!, It looks like Samsung finally got tired of waiting for Google, WOW, this is actually HUGE news,
I'm very surprised that this hasn't hit all the major android news sites.

Online now!
Both the app and the interface seems to be online now:

Yes, we submitted AmpliTube so it would be in the Galaxy Gifts program but our announcement is today and both the AmpliTube and iRig HD-A pages are live as pointed out above. I can't link to a video yet with my first post but we do have one on our channel.

Yes, and I hit the "Thanks" button for you doing that. We added a shorter version there just now too, but the longer one would be more interesting to people here, I'm sure. Right now we're only on the two Samsung devices that have Samsung Professional Audio support but hopefully there is more on the horizon, as we've seen tons of interest in AmpliTube on Android for years now.
And where can i purchase just the usb otg cable to use with my Irig HD ?
Or are you going to tell me that after buying the apps and bundle 3 times (iphone, ipad and android ) i will also have to buy the hardware too ?

I'd assume that any of these should work with the black irig HD as well:
https://www.google.com/search?site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&q=otg+adapter
At least they say so on the website for their iOS version of irig HD:
http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irighd/index.php?pp=irig-hd-specs
"Compatible with any Android devices with USB (OTG) connector running Android 5 (coming soon). "
It seems like it wont be just for the Note 4 and Note Edge. I dont understand wall this publicity to Samasung when they clearly say in their website that every Android device with USB OTG and Android Lollipop will get it x)
sir ikmultimedia i dont know anything about amplitube but a friend is asking if the note 4 will be able to use the full screen of the controls (thats how he described it to me) like the one in his ipad. Thanks sir.
Looks like Amplitube is now available from the play store as well:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ikmultimediaus.android.amplitubefullse
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ikmultimediaus.android.amplitubese
Still, it says
AmpliTube is compatible with Android devices that support Samsung Professional Audio technology, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 require Android 5 Lollipop.

Damn, I've just sold my Note 3 and I should receive my Nexus 6 in the next few days... IK Multimedia, any chance to see a port to devices other than Samsung's? Please, pretty please
Zomg amazing, i waited my whole life for this.. Thanks god ❤
What is the purpose of this thing?
ArtRage is also in the Galaxy Gifts while they haven't informed they have Android version ready on their own forums or anywhere, I was very surprised to see it.

You can buy a standard OTG cable and use the USB connection you already have with your iRig HD.
We also have more news on this front released today: We are definitely going to expand to other devices as more start to support Samsung Professional Audio but we also will be showing (and you can try it if you are there) near-zero latency Android audio for devices using Android 4.0 and above (so not even requiring Lollipop!). We announced this today on our site. I would post a link but I need more posts first
