Hello all,
I bought a VZW 7 inch Tab to use as a mobile hotspot with the prepaid $20/1GB Data plans.
On the 2.3.5 Stock ROM I have all sorts of 3G drops (even with solid 4 bar connections in multiple locations). Apparently some users have noticed this with this ROM.
I upgraded to ICS but couldn't use/activate my prepaid data plan. Are there any other ROMs out there which have the Settings > Verizon Data Service menu or any other way of activating these on-device data plans? You can't phone Verizon or get these plans any other way.
Thanks!
you could try overcome, That's a very stable GB rom, though i cant fully confirm it will solve your issue, its probably a step in the right direction though. I've read Ics is still having issues with that feature.
Please don't recommend overcome blindly.
IT WILL BRICK CDMA device.

My Apologies ~ Didn't notice till now, it was a WiFi model or CDMA device.
Thanks for posting this question...

Hi guys any help would be appreciated!!! I would like to use my unlimited T-mobile plan on my Galaxy Tab to get internet is that possible!!! Another question how can I add the dialer to the Galaxy Tab??? Guys thanks for looking out!!!!
There are multiple threads devoted to this one.
Basically, TMO has put restrictions on the device to stop folks pulling the SIM from a phone and getting data directly without paying for an additional line.
But, the device can be converted to be a phone with 2G data, OR a 3G tablet with no voice.
There are mechanisms to swap between modes, but they need a re-boot each time.
There is currently no way to have phone and 3G at the same time.
Check the threads!

All,
I currently own a T-Mobile Tab, and I just bought an AT&T Tab (outright, with no activated data service) with the intentions of selling the T-Mobile version because:
1. I am already an AT&T Customer for voice.
2. The T-Mobile network coverage in my market stinks.
My questions are along these lines:
1. I know I can put a ROM on the AT&T version which will enable phone use. But, if I install that ROM, will it also allow me to use the wap.cingular APN for internet access? I currently have the $45.00/mo "unlimited" BB plan on the SIM I would like to use in the AT&T Tab. With the stock ROM, it will not accept wap.cingular for the APN (believe me, I tried).
2. If #1 is entirely possible, is AT&T going to send me nastygrams via text because they know the IMEI of the TAB (it is theirs) and see the SIM mismatch? My whole point in doing this is having ONE device for phone and data. I am really not trying to cheat AT&T (although I don't think they deserve fair treatment) and if they offered a plan that would allow me voice on a tablet, I would consider it.
If this isn't possible, I will just abandon my efforts. It isn't worth the hassle if it isn't possible or realistic. I just would like to hear from someone who has done what I asked about above and if so, how is it working out for you?
Thanks, please advise.
-Rob
Yes, if you load the Euro ROM you will then be able to use wap.cingular. In fact, when I did so it already had the APN loaded and ready to select.
Regarding he second half, you are likely to get a nasty text from AT&T. I logged into my account and it showed that my currently active device was the Tab. The system spots it immediately, and if you are still under contract they'll probably nab you for it.
Try switching to the $45 4gb tethering plan. I am 2 weeks into the switch with no nastygrams.
I use my Tab as a phone and switch back and forth between my Captivate.
Not happy with the extra cost (was $30 unlimited data) however, after a long conversation with AT&T, they became very accommodating... helping make the cost easier to swallow.
I think that since the plan is for tethering, it IS IMEI agnostic, thus allowing you to use your data on any device.

Thank you
Thank you both for your insights. Could I possibly ask one more favor?
I am a veteran of about a dozen android devices, and I have flashed and tinkered with all of them. So I am far from a newb when it comes to the command line, etc. I rooted my T-Mobile Tab, but that is as far as that went because that was last fall, and things were still very fragile at that point as far as I could tell. I didn't want a brick on my hands.
I have looked around the Tab forums, and I can't seem to find a concise guide on how to approach our AT&T Tab in terms of the exact ROM to use and how to flash it, etc.
- Is there a good and updated guide to this that is AT&T specific? If so, could you please direct me to it or explain to me the steps you took?
- What are you running today? Is there a proven path to go back to stock? Can I get some sort of a good nandroid backup from a recovery before I flash the Euro ROM so I can revert it? I found a link to a "stock" ROM from Rotohammer and downloaded it this afternoon, but that is as far as I took it thus far.
Once done, I am going to roll with my current $45 BB "unlimited" plan until I get a nastygram. I will switch then if my hand is forced. I would prefer to keep the BB plan on the off chance I someday decide to retreat to a BB phone in a moment of weakness...
Thanks, any info you can direct me to would be greatly appreciated.

This is the thread that I used as my guide when flashing the Euro ROM. Pics and all, it's very helpful, and the flash went through rather fluidly and upon reboot, I could make calls and send text messages.
It felt a bit cumbersome using it as a phone, and the Euro ROM puts the home screen on the far left rather than centered (page 3) like the AT&T version, which irks my OCD need for symmetry. So I flashed back to stock per the instructions provided by Rotohammer several pages into the above referenced thread.
HOWEVER:
The provided stock firmware is a bit ****ed. When first powered on, there is no longer an AT&T splash screen, only the Galaxy Tab Samsung logo appears very briefly before the screen goes black, and remains black. There's no boot animation (though the boot music does play, and when it's fully booted you need to hit the power button twice to actually see your screen! After that point it's business as usual, but the lack of boot animation pisses me off and makes me wish I hadn't touched Odin. So be warned...you can go back to stock, but probably not back to former glory. I should have just stuck with my Tab as a tablet and my Aria as a phone. I'm hoping when the Gingerbread update comes out, it will fix the bootup issue.
I just flashed my ATT SGT to Overcome 2 Beta2 (Gingerbread) and it rocks. I'd go that route with the JK3 modem. No worries about missing splash screens, etc.
BTW, the BB data can be used on the SGT just fine. I was doing that until my company said to stop doing that

Have you now set this up, and are you getting voice and 3G data on the AT&T device without a "modem switch"?
I have a T-Mo Tab running OC Icarus, and I love it, but I only want one device. Don't use phone much, but need to have it available, and while I know many are using the Modem switch on T-Mo devices, it is just way too kludgy IMHO in this day and age to have to go thru reboot iterations to make calls.
I am thinking of buying a non-contract AT&T as you did, and getting a SIM from another carrier (Tru SIM) so I can use internationally and domestically. Since my "real" number is sitting on a depricated VZ winmo gadget now out of contract, Tru SIM will port numbers on new activation, and since I will be overseas in a month, I am trying for the "Holy Grail" - phone, 3G, int'l and Tab all on one device.
Any insight you can provide since making the "switch" to the AT&T Tab is most appreciated.
like the OP, want to have just one device instead of 2 (phone and tablet).
have the iphone4 on ATT with the $15 200MB data plan.
if i get the ATT SGT and use my iphone simcard on it for calls/txts/data, will ATT allow it? if not what would they want me to do? upgrade my plan?
You can use at&t iphone sim in your tab. At&t will force you to change your unlimited plan for a 4 gig data tethering plan.

dont have an unlimited data plan. have the 200MB $15/month data plan. can the 2GB $25/month data plan work on the GalTab for voice/sms/data?
dont really wanna upgrade to the 4GB $45/month plan. its way too much for my occasional use.
there a way to use the ATT GalTab for voice/sms/data with just the 200MB $15/month data plan?
TIA
jeraldyne
Yes, just put your sim card in the tab and reboot. But you will rip through the data allowance quickly. Overage charges will follow. I use a voice + 2gig data plan.
I have been using the 2gb/month data plan since Jan. No problems. There is a long thread about data plans on at&t. Go read it if you want. My summary: att doesn't like sim-swapping from an umlimited data plan that was started with purchase of some phones (I.e. iPhones bought with an unlimited plans). Any tiered data plan + SGT will probably be fine.

Im pretty sure the Blackberry data plan is independent of every other data plan. I believe the blackberry service itself is provided by RIM in conjunction with your ISP (your ISP provides the pipes to the Blackberry servers, thats why sites often think you are in canada)
This was at least true when i was using a BB in Australia, and i cant imagine its different anywhere else.
So when she got her BB, she probably got put on a BB data plan, and you need to get T-mobile know you need a normal Data plan.
I have never been on a BB plan, it's a regular plan that used to work.
I woke up one day to no data, contacted T-Mobile and turns out they put Android phones on different data plan. They did the switch at no charge. I suggest contacting them to update the plan info. (not that I think it should make a difference but they seem to think it does).
HTH,
marka
Have you considered trying to contact T-mobile?
I was a little excited to hear about the introduction of the new "Unlimited" data plan starting tomorrow. However, upon further perusion, I've discovered a screenshot and confirmed it with both of my local T-Mo store managers. This plan cannot be combined with hotspot/tethering option.
So my question is this: Will there be a workaround for this? Or do I have to stick with my current plan? I hit the 10gb cap within 2 weeks, because in this rural area, I use my phone as my general internet. :\

i'm tethering it right now and i'm on the new truly unlimited data plan. I had to set it to samsung gs2 as that was the closest related phone on the list that worked. generic ics or auto didn't work. i had to install the apk and re install it for it to work. then it took some playing with to get it to connect, but it works now. you can get it here.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850972 just a heads up though. I wouldn't go crazy with your internet. any indication that you are tethering and tmobile could do a number of things. read the fine print as this would be a violation of your contract.

unfortunately...
my phone is rooted with the stock rom and although tethering and wifi do work.....it's blocked by tmobile. you can get away with wifi tethering for a few minutes, then you'll get a text from tmobile with a link to "upgrade" to a plan that allows this feature. I've tried both usb tethering and wifi tethering which end in the same result

that's the main reason I stick with stock rom [mine sgh-t879], rooted, and way debloated.
fabulous device really. 2 days of batt life [i turn it off when I sleep], lean, mean, fast, beautiful.
I use wifi exclusively in home home-office and every other place I get a chance, which as everyone knows is an increasingly long list.
the only 'bug' I have at the moment is something sporadically defeating NoLED which I use for notifications, and that Noozozide [a fabulous app] doesn't like something in there... probably the google play player. haven't had time to sort that yet.
I was reading that the tmo wifi app was figured out to work on another android phone(can't remember what one)- they altered the build prop and hacked the apk. Too bad no one is interested in doing this for the ATT note There are so few ATT Notes running on tmobile. Once they are out of contract- another year or so, and they will be moving on to newer phones. Jedi4 worked for me as far as wifi calling- but I have no need at present for the wifi calling feature, but it is great when you need it!
I was looking into the new tmo uncarrier plans and thinking about getting the iphone5 to add to my android collection- but no wifi calling for it. At least not initially, and they are being coy about future plans for it. If I am gonna get a new tmobile phone it should have wifi calling. Am going to europe in the fall and it will come in handy!
I love my note- really do, but there are times I would love a smaller phone to slip into my pocket and go. The Note is huge- at times a great thing, at times a not so great thing. New Iphone will rescue my itunes and make music an easier managed thing on the computer. Doubletwist and air sync just isn't the same. Might have to get my apple hacking tools sharpened!
the sgh-t879 is just fabulous and a bit of a bargain, though the i717 is typically a tad less in pristine condition.
As far as I know samsung T-mo variants have the Wifi calling very solid but I don't know what to expect going international - you obviously need a world phone multi-band.
we have the SII, the "S 4G" and the Note - all deliver the beans well on wifi. The Blaze does also and is the better choice vs. the S 4G, as we've found out.
I understand what you mean about smaller size - you may have to go Nexus but I despise the fixed battery [the life is not great...do not let anyone fool you] and lack of removable storage. if you want to go cheap, get the LG optimus L9... its a great phone to use just out of the box debloated: wifi is excellent. the knock is there's not many hacks for it since LG made it difficult. those can be had for 250 bucks and sold for nearly the same as it gets terrific user reviews. around here [austin tx, san antonio etc] some steals come around on craigslist ... people get those with a contract upgrade for free, then sell on c'list to go buy a note or some other thing. have seen new ones for $175

I just wanted to chime in for a moment. I acquired a att note from eBay a couple of weeks ago and I am running the jedi 4 ROM and WIFI calling is great with no hiccups. It's fast and beautiful. Now mind you I am coming from a gs2 before the jellybean upgrade. In fact the second day my wife had the gs2 was when the update was pushed out. Access LTE on T-Mobile
Hi just wanted to chime in. If T-Mobile has LTE in your area, you can access it by using the stock AT&T Rom and Modem. Just root it and Debloat it. Here's some of the speeds I've been able to get. The only thing, When I'm sitting at my desk at work, I have to switch to a different modem to pick up 3G and HSPA+ (21.6 Mb/S) I will say every test that I did using the stock AT&T modem was higher than any other modem I used.
Everyone seems to be talking about wifi calling.. how well does normal calling work? how is the signal over all? is it worth it to get an AT&T version and try to use the blaze modems instead of getting the T-Mobile version?
Just use jedi leader ics 4.0.4 it has wifi calling and stable...for tmobile version...
