Question regarding the new "Unlimited" plan - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note

I was a little excited to hear about the introduction of the new "Unlimited" data plan starting tomorrow. However, upon further perusion, I've discovered a screenshot and confirmed it with both of my local T-Mo store managers. This plan cannot be combined with hotspot/tethering option.
So my question is this: Will there be a workaround for this? Or do I have to stick with my current plan? I hit the 10gb cap within 2 weeks, because in this rural area, I use my phone as my general internet. :\

i'm tethering it right now and i'm on the new truly unlimited data plan. I had to set it to samsung gs2 as that was the closest related phone on the list that worked. generic ics or auto didn't work. i had to install the apk and re install it for it to work. then it took some playing with to get it to connect, but it works now. you can get it here.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850972 just a heads up though. I wouldn't go crazy with your internet. any indication that you are tethering and tmobile could do a number of things. read the fine print as this would be a violation of your contract.

unfortunately...
my phone is rooted with the stock rom and although tethering and wifi do work.....it's blocked by tmobile. you can get away with wifi tethering for a few minutes, then you'll get a text from tmobile with a link to "upgrade" to a plan that allows this feature. I've tried both usb tethering and wifi tethering which end in the same result

(Q)Tethering on prepaid

I purchased an at&t go phone Sim card because our bill was almost 1000 dollars. Is there any way to enable tethering on the wap apn?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
Holy cow, how did you manage to clock up such a massive bill?!
Anyway, if you're on a custom ROM without the tethering block, you should just be able to turn it on and go. It should work as long as you have a data connection.
If you're on ATT stock, and the tethering check is still in place, I don't think you're going to have any luck unless you actually add tethering to your line. I know GoPhone supports ATT's standard messaging packages; I don't know if they do the same data packages.

Insurance replacments, about 3 actually. Go phone doesnt support this phone at all in fact its not supposed to have data at all apparenty because lte phones are not allowed to use the go phone service because AT&T sucks. There words. I couldve done straight talk but this is only a temporary solution till i get paid friday and straight talk doesnt support lte does it? OH and i do have the 500 MB smartphone plan for 25 dollars which is a rip off to the max so taht should work in theory right?

In theory, yes. As long as the phone has a working data connection and no tethering check in place, it should let you tether, as inadvisable as tethering is on that plan.

Tethering - Your Carrier Knows and May Charge You

Just wanted to report a recent experience.
I was in the Netherlands, using an Italian Vodafone SIM on a US Play Store purchased Nexus 5.
I decided to try the native tethering. It worked. However, I also immediately received an SMS from Vodafone telling me I was using data outside my plan, and my account was debited 6 Euro for a couple of seconds of updating the NY Times on my Nexus 7 via tether.
So beware - even if your carrier does not block tethering, the Nexus 5 somehow reports that tether. It was not just packet inspection here, as the Nexus 7 tablet presumably uses the same type of data as the phone.

Not here in USA on at&t. Been doing it for years ..... as long as u use it just as a internet connection your fine ... If u start using a lot of data then yes they will send u a warning .
Since 4.2 carriers have been able to see when you're tethering.
Unfortunately I don't know a way around it, though thankfully my carrier simply blocks my internet for 30 minutes when it detects tethering

Yeah, my S4 works fine, but when I use my N5 it detects it,, I am also on AT&T
I'm using a1 Austria network (5gb internet limit) and I don't seen this. I used tethering (150mb) and not received anything about it from my network. I don't understand why they charge more when you already paid for your internet in your phone. This is insane..

Anyone know what the mechanism they added in 4.2 for reporting tethering to carriers is?
Is there an Xposed module that disables it, or are there custom ROMs with this "feature" disabled?
im from italy, with wind mobile I never had problems with thetering because they just simply allow it! 10gb per month at 12euros.
perfect for working on the go with my pc and phone as modem.
my suggest is to look for companies that allow it at good prices, and not keep contracts with thefts that dont.

i wished i had unlimited LTE cap! i only get 6gb with tethering allowed on rogers LTE network in toronto, canada, i'd gladly pay 100-150 bucks a month for UNLIMITED LTE, i'd cancell my home internet( which is 45Mb/s unlimited for around 70bucks cdn.

There are ways just not sure I can list them here. Do a search online and you will find some.
I think some ROMs might turn off the feature but not sure which ones do this.

The carrier can choose to do what it wants with the information. However, it seems clear that the carrier gets the information that tethering is taking place with the Nexus 5.
Thought this was common knowledge, not hard for carriers to detect tethering even if the OS doesn't tell them - packets have to be routed. Some choose to deal with it, some don't.
Don't see why people take the risk - £15 in the UK for an unlimited plan with tethering.

A lot of people here don't live in the UK, and don't have the option of paying just 15 for tethering. Most places in the states charge an arm and leg for tethering, and it's usually limited to a few hundred megs.

I don't know that it is common knowledge that the phone somehow tells the carrier. I think that many of us assumed there was packet inspection, but given that I was tethering a Nexus 7 this appears to be something different.

I said I thought it was common knowledge the carriers could tell when you're tethering, not that the phone tells them. They don't have to wait for an OS that tells them when there's a device other than the connected one transmitting data through it. Your phone is, for all intents and purposes, routing packets. They don't even need to inspect the packets, there's numerous ways to see that data didn't originate at the device they should.

I switched carrier exactly because of this, VodafoneIT is as far as I know the only big Carrier in italy that charges for tethering. I switched carrier because of this sh*t. They made me pay 4 Euro every day I tried to use Tethering...
and now I can happily confirm that WIND and TRE don't charge anything.
As Vodafone is now charging 19,- € for switching plans, my advice is, switch carrier.

Nexus 5 Straight Talk (AT&T) Thread

So it looks like pretty much every other prepaid carrier has its own thread so I thought I'd start one for the Straight Talk folks. I picked up my N5 a little over a week ago and switched both my wife and I (also has an N5) from Sprint. We'd been with them for a little over 9 years but in their LTE migration here in Portland their coverage went from decent to terrible. Thus far I'm very happy with the AT&T service, speed is good, cost is AWESOME, and I can tether without root so I retain work email functionality. I'm very pleased with the decision to dump Sprint and couldn't be happier with the N5!
With my ATT phone I could not tether unless I went to the high Gb plan. The unlocked Nexus, as you found, lets you do it out of the box.

I did the same. Jumped ship from Sprint and went to Straight Talk, mainly because of the savings and Sprints bogus 3G & WiMax 4G. Tried t-mobiles $30 plan but the cell reception in my area was worse than what i had with Sprint. I was skeptical about going back to At&t as I had them before i had Sprint and was getting charged way more than i should have been paying for one line. I went with Straight Talk At&t and i have LTE coverage, a very reasonable phone bill, and no worries about extra charges. Definitely recommend to anyone whos looking for a reasonable bill and doesnt have good t-mobile coverage.
Me and two of my friends got nexus 5s and att st Sims and two of us networks say home. The other says at&t -_- good service none the less.

Mine says home. It has said that for the past two years that I have been with them. Its not a big deal.

Anyone able to get the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to work? I have seen threads where the N5 and T-Mobile users has gotten it to work but none for the ST ATT users.
I dropped Sprint with another six months left on my contract, so it will cost me about $120 in fees, but it's worth it. I'll save almost $ 40 a month, so after just three months the ETF would have been paid off, and I really start saving.
I'm very happy with Straight Talk AT&T. I have superior data speeds, and my calls are clear with no drops.
My mobile hotspot works, too.
I've used a few different pre paid plans the last few years but none of them have been this good. At first I went for the cheapest plan but with low minutes thinking I would use voip or something but I would get extra charges.
Only thing I've worried about with this plan is data limits, but they cleared that up with an actual limit now. I don't really download that much anyways and have a lot of Wi-Fi access.

Absolutely. I downloaded FoxFI but it looks like it's unnecessary.
I'm quite happy with att st for the most part (Salem Oregon). Tmobile data speeds are 2 to 3x faster, but limited service in doors of course.
The one problem I've had with strait talk that I've seen others confirm is the push delay. After an unknown amount of time of inactivity (usually a few minutes) the Google services port on st closes and you won't get new emails or hangouts ect until you refresh or the Google heart beat refreshes (up to 28 minutes).
Fortunately there's an app that lets you manually change the Google push ping to keep it alive. So I'm usually not more than 2 minutes behind on hangouts.

I've used FoxFi and that seems to enable the factory hotspot. In any case it works.
One thing hardly anyone is mentioning is that Straight Talk cripples video streaming on 4G and LTE. Watching YouTube videos is pretty useless unless you switch to 3G which is still pretty crappy. Another thing is that MMS can be hit or miss on Straight Talk. Sometimes its fine and other times it won't work.

I did my first month on the Nexus 5 with Straight talk, really have no complaints at all. AT&T's coverage is not anywhere near as good as Verizon, but it's damn well better than Sprint or T Mobile. I left straight talk for h2o Wireless as there's very little LTE out here with AT&T anyways. The data cap was just too small on straight talk.
H20 wireless $60 a month fit unlimited everything, no throttling.

I have read that H2O throttles that $60 plan after 3GB.
I am glad someone started an att straight talk thread. Can anyone with a VPN tell me if it works with att straight talk? I use a pretty common VPN provider which works no problem on WIFI but has very frequent dis-connects while on mobile. It is pretty much unusable while on mobile.
Yeah so I've heard they throttle.
The way I figure it. Att is best in my area.
45$ a month for unlim text. Minutes. And 2.5gb data. Is still cheaper then if I wanted to go sign a contract with att for service. I'd have capped minutes. Maybe unlimited text. And 2gb data. Not even unlimited with slow speeds...
So I get an extra 500mb. Free mins. And such. And its cheaper and no contract..
And I haven't found anything better yet.

I read on another site that there is some sort of tether cloaker for ATT if you are rooted but I can't remember where I read it.
To tether on TMobile you need to be rooted? I'm switching over and would like to know before I do.
Well, I am on the unlimited plan, which started to come with a 2.5 gig hotspot. When I wasn't rooted, obviously my data rose on the hotspot when is tethered my iPad, but after rooting and using exposed etc. my hotspot data has stayed at .1 meg for that last 2 weeks

AT&T Mobile Share plans have a bucket of data, and it can be used on the device or tethering ... doesn't matter how you use it.

nexus 6, AT&T and wireless tethering

I hope this doesn't sound like a sob story but I live in rural TN. The best I can get to my house is dial-up internet. Therefore I have AT&T as my wireless subscriber because I use my cell phone as a hotspot and I actually get 4g LTE at my house. I just saw AT&T's unlimited plan deal and I also saw that tethering/hotspot is not allowed on this plan. My question is if I choose the unlimited data plan from AT&T, can I somehow work around their hotspot block or is there something I can do to my phone to work around this? Is this even possible?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Or install a rom with tethering check disabled.
Whatever the tether unlock method for marshmallow is will work and also custom roms that disable the tether check but keep in mind that since it goes against your plan and this new unlimited plan doesn't carry the whole idea of "I've been on this plan since I got it and that means I'm a super loyal customer and entitled to everything." Then I wouldn't be surprised if At&t would be more likely to kick these new unlimited plan users to mobile share for tethering than old unlimited plans but I also wouldn't be surprised if rural customers would be more likely to get a break on that due to less congested network. It's worth a shot, really the worst thing that could happen is getting put back on your old plan if At&t chooses to force that. and being stuck with a directv subscription assuming you switched from dish or something.
I don't get cable out this way so I'm on DirecTV anyway. The only thing I'm worried about is losing the good plan I have now if the unlimited one doesn't work out. I get 40GB for $75, it would be a shame to lose that.
