Bricked Cappy - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yep, I did something similar to this guy:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=998180
I accidentally flashed the Fascinate's I997 UCLB3 after working on my Cappy all night. She's dead - doesn't turn on no matter what I try. No vol up/down, inserting USB cable, inserting battery - tried them all. I can't get the thing to light up at all.
Any advice out there for a poor sap like me?
Unfortunately, the link below shows up when searching for "captivate heimdall one click gingerbread", but it's really for the Fascinate...should have paid closer attention.

Hey Nate. Looks like youre in a real bind here.... Heres what you can try. Buy a jig. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0 This video will show you what you should do in your circumstance.

Yea jiggs are handy pieces of equipment and cost about $2.00 brand new on eBay. Or you can try making one like the video. Shipping might take a while if you purchase one from the internet. It took me a month to receive mine. Definitely faster to make your own.

I don't think a jig will help you. If there are no signs of life, you are hard bricked and will need the unbrickablemod.
Sent from my SGH-I897

Confirmed - jig didn't help. I did notice that in Windows, the Galaxy S drivers recognize the device as a Fascinate when I try the 3 button combo, but the screen never turns on. Also, I get the "new hardware plugged in" sound in windows about every 10 seconds, so it's like the phone is trying to load, then reboots.
Was trying to avoid the soldering iron, but it looks like that may be my last resort. A good test for the unbrickablemod, for sure. Will post if I get around to trying it.

[Q] My phone just flipped out on me...No it's not bricked!

My phone (model 1007) had been rooted and running Serendipity. All was well until I had trouble with phone calls. So I unrooted and reflashed to stock. I reformatted and it was like brand new, out the box. I didn't have the time to reroot so I kept it clean. I pressed on 'update' on the settings menu (was that stupid of me?) and it just shut down. So NOW,
I can't turn it on! My phone starts to turn on but just shows this little spinning circle and the screen goes black. I can get into download and recovery though, so that's good right?
The phone will only charge. The very FEW times I actually got it to turn on the phone said that the USB was connected when it wasn't!
Could someone please, please help me?
Also, this is a phone from the warranty dept. It's refurbished because my other Captivate wouldn't turn on (I'm just having some sucky luck, right?)
So am I still able to return it? It's been less than 90 days i got it and has never been in contact with water or dropped. In fact, I always cradle it in a nice case.
I'm just terrified of the horror stories I've heard about Samsung warranty dept and AT&T's warranty dept. I don't want to give it to them to have some crazy $500 charge, you know? I think I don't have anything to worry about but it just freaked me out.
I had a similar experience, but mine caught itself in a reboot loop. I wa able to get back into download mode and re-flash, fixing the issue.
Have you tried to see if it will at least go into download mode?

The OTA update ATT sent out has been known to cause these issues on some phones, Here are your 2 options. 1. Return it and get another referb. 2. Go down to your local Radio shack and get the parts for a jig, (directions in the forums. A search for Jig will get you there) and then not worry about much flashing roms from then as a Jig will work 99.9% of the time.
That is of course after you see if you can get into download mode without the jig.
lol I've tried jigs before. I suck at making them and it never worked for me. Clearly, I've been too sloppy in making them. I can get into download mode. But I've already reflashed with the same results. If I keep getting the same results I'm afraid someone will tell me I have a hardware issue.
Is the jig the only thing left to try?
Thanks soooo much for replying!

Ok you can get into download mode so you should be ok. What have you been flashing?
#1 dont need a jig - just 3 resistors
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10112309&postcount=1
HINT dont touch the resistor leads with your bare fingers, it can change the resistance, especially if youre sweaty. USE TAPE on the ends
#2 if you dont think you can do that, you can buy a premade jig on ebay DELIVERED for under 10 bucks, i just ordered one for 8 just in case.

use this one buddy and be patient with it. it works if you need help you can pm me cause ive been there before.

definitely maybe probably bricked

OK well i was installing Darkys latest rom. I was at the point where i was in
download mode and odin. While odin was loading files the usb slipped out of the
phone because nothing besides the stock usb cord happens to stay firmly in the
charging port on this phone. This is the 2nd time this happed but when it
happened this time my phone just stopped working and by stop working i mean i
get absolutely no picture on the screen. nothing happens when its plugged into
power cord or usb cord. nothing. tried holding all 3 buttons in tons of times and
nothing.
Im out of warranty and got no insurance. I did get att to give me 180 credit cuz
i threatened to cancel. so if i cant fix this im gonna use a crappy prepaid phone
for the time being. If the SGS2 doesnt come out by march then ill probably get
an axtrix even tho i would rather get SGS2.
So please does anyone know of anything i can try?? i'm probably gonna goto an att store and try a new battery. Any suggestions would be appreciated???
You tried pulling everything, plug in usb, hold rocker, put back in batt? My understanding is, if you have the bad luck of that cable coming out while loading the boot loader then you r indeed SOL.

Double spacing isn't necessary. We aren't going to grade your post.
You hopefully now understand that flashing to stock isn't the way to avoid problems; it's the way to create big ones.
Try removing the battery, wait a couple of minutes, plug in USB, hold volume up+down, while holding up+down insert the battery and see if that gets you back into download mode.

I tried all that. Ive probably flashed every single rom in the development section of the forum.
If it gets unplugged while doing an update then usually it displays the phone..!..computer picture and you can still get into download mode from there. I'm getting nothing tho.
the reason i think it could be the battery is because it may have been pretty close to dying which is stupid for flashing when it was close to dead but i wanted to hurry up because i had to leave the house. i'm wondering if since the software on there now is corrupt would that make the phone unable to charge. thats why i want to try a new battery

yeah i know my buttons work, i just cant get my phone to turn on at all. also tried multiple chargers and usb cables. I think i'm screwed. im hoping someone on here heard of this problem before but ive never read anything about it on here before.
Using a POS phone till the SGS2 comes out is gonna suck
anyone know anything?
I will be trying another battery today.
Besides a jig, I have nothing else for you sorry.
But on a different spectrum, if you do get a new phone, dont get the atrix, it is the worst phone out of all the phones coming out on att. Get the inspire our the infuse if you dont want to hold a dinner plate to your head.

phone needs to be able to power on for a jig to work.
how are you out of warranty? (besides the custom rom) the phone has a 1 year warranty and it is not been on the market that long.
if the phone *happened* to be *dammaged* in a way that they would never notice AND would NEVER be able to read the memory (with out spending thousands of dollars), THEY WOULD NEVER KNOW you flashed custom rom and voided your warranty. they would try to test it, nope, broken, NEXT...
and SGS2 expected in june

yeah your right i still am in warranty but 2 weeks after i got the phone i dropped it and the screen cracked but the cracks not that bad. So i cant warranty the device because the crack. I did get att to give me $180 credit on my bill. $30 of every 6 month.
Ive heard the international version of the SGS2 will be out long before the att version will be. So i might use my upgrade on an iphone 4 and then sell it and buy the international SGS2.
what do you guys think about that idea?

[Q] soft brick?

So I was flashing the steam kernel and it failed using Odin. I then got the infamous pic with the cell phone-exclamation-computer. I have had this happen in the past. No prob right? I have a jig which I've used before several times and it worked. Now when I use the jig i get the same pic, not download. I tried adb. device not found. tried pluging in with both vol up and down pressed, same thing. Any suggestions? I'm hoping this is recoverable. I've even tried taking out the battery, plug in usb to comp than phone, holding down vol down button and putting back the battery. Same prob. Tried reinstalling the drivers....same prob.
The fact that your getting that image is a great sign. The jig you are using may be not functioning properly. If its a home made jig, they can easily become ineffective if you touch the resistors. That changes the resistance of the whole jig and will fail to put the phone in download.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
It's a jig I bought of ebay. It's worked several times in the past.
I soft bricked and got that picture. When I plugged into Odin one click it lit up, and I flashed back to stock. It didn't do it the first time. I opened Odin, plugged in, and held all three buttons, as it looped. After two or three loops, it recognized in Odin, and I was able to restore to stock.
I tried what I was flashing in the first place, and soft bricked again, this time no matter what I did Odin was no go, but I was able to fix with a jig.
Give Odin a try. Others have had that too: phone!computer working as download mode.

Quarlow, you are AWESOME!!!!! Got it to stock again. Didn't use oneclick cuz this build is a 1010 build, so i've been apprehensive about using it, so instead I used Odin 3 v1.52 and used ucjh2 in the pda and 512 pit and repartitioned. Odin recognized the phone even though I had the phone!comp thing going on. First time it failed so I tried again and it worked perfectly. Thanks much my friend, I would've never thought to just try it without having download and the shoveling droid.

If you haven't soft bricked yet then your not flashing enough then I haven't needed mine in quite a while but it is worth it to have around for sure rather than when it happens and you struggle to build one or wait to buy one for a few days/week. Cheapest insurance to have around.
Plus I think most roms have progressed enough that is less common to have bugs in them that would soft brick the phone. But maybe 6-8 months ago with trying out all the different 2.1 and 2.2 roms it was bound to happen. If it wasn't for me getting soft bricked on occasions and learning how to recover from it I wouldn't of learned half what I think I know...

Since I updated to 2.3 with the GB bootloaders I have not needed my jig. I put one together from a spare cord and 2X150k resistors - worked great when I needed it.
I'm on vacation now and want to flash something but dont have my jig...you know how that goes when you need it most...

Through one of my flashing...bricking...odin one clicking I lost my bootloaders that gave me the ability to hold buttons and get into DL or recovery mode. This was all while playing around with 2.1 - 2.2. Since going to 2.3 the button method has always worked...although I still keep the jig handy...just in case...

I'll keep an eye out if you ever hard brick... . Bricking is typically a part of flashing. Very highly recognized DEV's have PM'd me after hard bricking. There's no shame in it as it happens every now and then.

Just letting everyone know who has a Galaxy S phone. I called ATT (6/21/11)and let them know that my phone has random shutdowns (once monthly), they checked the EMIE (I think that is what it is called) # on the phone, and they are replacing at no cost. [Q] Won't charge or power on (with links)

I hope I am not duplicating a thread, the XDA search function appears to be down at the moment. Last night I put my phone on the charger (OEM HTC charger); the battery was low, but the phone was still on, and it appeared to be charging. When I woke up this morning (late, since my phone acts as my alarm), my phone was turned off. Now I am unable to turn on the phone at all, and there is no orange charging LED. Unfortunately I don't have the money for a warranty exchange/replacement/repair (and probably won't for a while), so I will be without a mobile until this gets resolved. Please help, you guys are my only hope.
Steps I have tried:
Leaving the phone plugged in for a long while.
Holding vol up and power for several minutes.
Holding vol down and power for several minutes.
Holding vol up and down and power for several minutes.
Plugging it into a computer.
Using several different chargers.
Removing my SIM card, and trying all of the above again.

Unfortunately that doesn't appear to work for me. When you had to do this, was your device completely dead like mine, or were you able to see the orange charging light?
Just 2 days ago mine did nearly the same thing. It just seemed to run out of battery REALLY fast and wouldn't charge again until it completely ran out of battery. And then it wouldn't charge properly with any chargers, the led was flickering , cutting out then staying on for a few seconds etc. I left it overnight plugged in and it charged it finally me, but now my phone is going crazy.(270 rotation even when it's rotation locked, not recognising headphones or USB connection and more.) Maybe we both have faulty motherboards? I'm pretty sure mine isn't a software problem after numerous factory resets. I know this isn't really helpful but we're having a similar problem so if someone can help, this info could be useful? I just emailed HTC but I'm bootloader unlocked and running ARHD som I'm not that optimistic. They might try to blame that, even though I know it's not the problem.
Disappointing after 3 months of love and tender care that something like this goes wrong.
Um there might be 2 possibilityes:
1. Your phone is hard bricked (google it if you don't understand), witch may be caused by bootloader malfuncion while your phone was shutting diwn, in case that something might got corrupted
2. Hardware faliure. You might have something burned on your pcb, or you might have a dead battery

When I plug the phone into my PC, it now installs drivers for "qualcomm hs-usb qdloader 9008"; does this indicate a hard-brick? If so, I read somewhere else that if I used JTAG, I could potentially fix the phone. Is this a program that can be downloaded? If it helps, I do have one of SkOrPn's cables that I used a while ago to fix my Kindle Fire. T-Mobile is saying they won't do anything because the camera lens on the back has a small crack in it, even though they admit that it is unrelated to the issue at hand.

Thanks for the reply. I see that the tool they posted is for the AT&T Galaxy Note. Will this tool still work for the HTC One? I've got Linux machines available to use the tool if it will.
I had the phone for one month and it stopped charging. TMobile gave me a second charger at the store two weeks in since that's when it started. One month and a day after getting the phone it completely stopped charging. You had to rotate the cables in weird positions to get a charge. I think it's the USB connector on the phone or the battery. The store is mailing me a replacement for $20. IM using my backup S2 till then. I was rooted on Revolution the entire time. Suffice to say I think it's important to delicately remove the cable after charging. IM angry about this since I've had zero issues with my Samsung devices and thought I'd try the One.

I see, thanks for the help. Yeah I'm not very happy with T-Mobile right now. Basically, they won't even handle the repair/replacement because there is a small crack on the camera lens; I've spoken with two different representatives at T-Mobile who gave the same response. What's worse is that they admitted that it is obvious the cracked lens is completely unrelated to the fact that the phone won't boot. My next path is to interface directly with HTC to get it fixed, which is of course going to cost more money. If I at least had better coverage where I live and work, it might be a different story, but so far I've had nothing but bad luck with them. Once I can get out of this mess, I'll probably switch back to Verizon, and maybe give their Edge program a try. Sorry about the rant, but this is just getting silly.

Note 4 SM-N910T Soft Brick? Recognized when plugged in as CD Drive

Hey guys,
So i got this phone from a dude on craigslist. It's honestly not his fault but my phone was experiencing random restarting, slow app loading, etc... I thought the guy sold me a phone he had ****ed around with so I thought I'd take it upon myself to fix it. I didn't come here first because I wasn't a member at the time and the other websites that google suggested before this one suggested flashing a new rom to the phone. I gave it my best, tried to follow random guides, and unfortunately I made things about 1000x worst
So now here I am today.
My phone won't start, into any mode. When I plug a phone into a computer I get the "charging" icon and my computer recognizes it as CD Drive. I bought the phone because I have a note 2 and honestly it's basically not supported any more. I thought this would be a good jump up because I love the note series and hate that the most recent models have been blowing up because it honestly is the best phone out there. Can you guys help me? Honestly I kinda just need to know if I should just give up or if there's a chance.
I know about this link:https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/help/galaxy-note-4-n910t-fixed-hard-bricked-t3466547 which claims I can MAYBE bring it back but it really doesn't match my scenario all that much and before I try it and **** this up even more I thought I'd just ask.
Thanks all

Hey guys,
So i got this phone from a dude on craigslist.

Hey all so an update. I guess this is just how it goes when you start to think about things. I took the battery out of my phone and low and behold my phone suddenly was recognized under the device manager as "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9088" exactly as the site I linked identified. I might have to look into the battery the guy was using after this but now that this has been identified I'm going to try the indicated fix and will report back.

Hey guys reply #3 so crazy enough the first file from the link worked to bring me to download mode. I am debating trying it with the second file but before I do that I was hoping I could get someone's advice as to what I should do if I want to actually flash a good version of the note 4 properly. I also don't want to screw up the progress I've made and so if anyone has a link they'd like to share or some advice as to how to go from here I'd really appreciate it. I know I had tried a few links off of this site before so anything you guys could recommend would really be of help.

Unfortunately, i think the guy probably knew the phone was failing and decided to sell you the phone knowing it was going to die. I have fixed a number of Note 4s like yours (even is recognized when plugged in the usb like you say) by replacing the motherboard and it will cost you about 50-60 on ebay.
See, that's what I was thinking. I did a search though and didn't find any for less than like 200. Any chance u could toss me a link... I mean like I already sank 200 into this thing like an idiot. But I guess now I know the tricks. I just wanted a better note than the note 2 I have that had a battery and forgot that just because my note 2 works fine that not every phone would be the same.
