[Q] Camera, LED, headphones not working. Hardware issues? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My girlfriend's N1 has gradually developed some problems. At first the headphones were not being recognized properly. Then camera stopped working. Now that I've taken a look at it the flash light does not work either. If you call someone, 4 times out of 5 the screen goes blank and you cannot end the call. Sometimes this happens when receiving calls as well.
I was using CM7 before and no additional apps were installed. Tried with or without SD card, rebooting, resetting to factory defaults, putting another ROM, restoring to factory ROM.
The symptoms:
- any camera app starts with a black screen and later throws wait/close dialog
- flashlight apps seem to work but no light is coming out
- headphones do not get recognized, tried 4 brands, compressed air, pushing, pulling, pressing. Not a lint issue.
- immediately after pressing a call I get a black screen which I can come out of by pressing a random combination of keys
I tried moving the camera and LED modules with my finger but nothing happened.
Everything else works: calls, trackball with led, bluetooth, wifi.

I had a similar problem with the flash and camera and it was fixed when I swapped out the main board which also has all the ports your having problems with

That sounds unfortunate because the original seller has now closed the shop: site is offline, amazon and ebay products are delisted, does not respond to email.
Even worse, I'm located in Germany and bought the phone here, but I don't really speak the language well enough to contact consumer protection authority and even the HTC support site is all in German. Original box and warranty are in my home country. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
I've written a mail to HTC support since GooglePhone has closed shop as well.
Since I'm still on a rant, touchscreen has been acting up since day one, upon heating it registers wrong touches, but this is already a known issue.
It was a nice phone while it lasted, but in hindsight I wouldn't recommend it to anyone anymore. It still looks like new fwiw.

Hardware
Its hardware issue caused mayb y dropping the N1
so try to replacing ur main board or mayb u can get it repaired if u have a good engineer around u
Thank If my reply helps u ..

Just as an update, the issue with all these phones is the ribbon cable connecting headphone jack, camera, proximity sensor and perhaps [front] speaker. It's probably an easy replacement and the part cost is around 25-40$. The cellphone repair guy said that he has done it a lot of times for this phone type, so it's probably a production/engineering issue.

Tilt 2 Reboot on Slide? :(

I Sent my Tilt 2 in after dropping it into water and it was returned to me after being "fixed" through AT&T.
before i sent it in it would reboot very often and the notification light lit up sporadically. Also no vibration.
Now it is back from the factory and it seems i was given the same unit and they tried to fix it. It seem not to reboot and the vibrator works again and the light works.
HOWEVER now almost everytime i slide in the keyboard and sometimes when i slide it out it simply shuts off i think it must be a hardware error but i feel cheated if thats the case.
I have already Re HardSPL'd and Task29'd it. And the problem persists, any ideas?

try flashing a new rom.
i would suggest you to call the Customer service again and talk to them about this issue.
I've seen this discussed here as possibly being a hardware problem, the flat ribbon cable between the screen and the main part of the phone (keyboard) might be loose or damaged.
put tape around your battery so its not loose in there.. that could be an easy fix. worth a try before sending it in
face it also but rarely. It's almost happening when i slide in keyboard roughly but doesn't appear when i do it gently. Yes maybe it's correlated with flexible cable quality.
Yup its hardware, guess I have to send it back in :/

[Q] Commons problems of hardware on Milestone/Droid phones

Hi, greetings from Colombia!
Mi Motorola Milestone (that I buy the last September after my lost Nokia 5800) on this days had one hardware problem, the power button failed (semms broken), so I take it to the warranty (using CyanogenMod 7 for Milestone Android 2.3.5) and the fixed it!! Weee... But...
I just enjoy my fixed phone for just 1 week, because another defect comes up, the digitizer begins to fail, first, become unresponsive from the right side (and the search button), and, after 3 days, all was OK, but in the afternoon the scren become "crazy", and sometimes the right side begins to fail again, so.. this Monday i has to return it to warranty (I'm hoping that they change my phone for a new one).
From my sight, I have a really bad luck, having two of the most commons problems of this Milestone/Droid phones.
Do you know another common failure of this phones?
The "bubbly" keyboard is quite likely to lose a few keys and the paint on the camera button comes off quite frequently.
I have experienced some of those hardwares problems with 2 Milestones. The camera button I guess its the most common.
Hardware problems that I had:
- Digitizer failing. Replaced on warranty, no problems since.
- Camera button paint came off.
- Bad headphone jack.
- Bubbly keyboard on one of the phones, went to RMA, problem persisted.
- Loose battery cover.
Most of the problems you can live with, except for the failing digitizer.

my digitizer went bad. bought a replacement on ebay. arrived in 9 days. it ain't so straightforward inside the milestone coz of the slider mech but all's good now

Second that.
Lots of people report their screens going nuts or becoming unresponsive - due to moisture or general digitizer failure
My headphone jack was a pain at first - but the more often I use it the better it gets
Guys - I am expecting to receive my Milestone (1) on Monday. But I am just now seeing these hardware issues that you had. After how long did the hardware problems - especially the digitizer - show up? I'm wondering how long I will have to go before it starts calling for parts!
My digitizer died after 9 months (December -> August). At the beginning (first week before completely dead) right side of screen stops working. In second week I saw that digitizer is jumping over menus by itself, then screen stops working.
Everything else is working fine. I hope there will be no other problems with other parts of phone

Same time for me, after 9/10 months my digitalizer started to fail, and the power button problem was 9 months after I got it, btw maybe my power buttons problems was caused by using this buttons to hang out calls (using CM7 settings), so my advice, don't use this function.
And, talking about my phone, the replace it . Now I have a new Milestone, wee...
I bought mine in May 2010 and haven't had any hardware problems.
But a friend of mine bought his' just a month earlier and his keyboard fell apart and the camera button lost its coating.
I guess it's just a matter of luck - and good care of course
The headphone jack has been the only problem I've run into, and it's an issue that apparently can be at least partially fixed by shimming it in one direction or another.
Thanks for the heads up. It seems I have nine months before sh!t starts happening then! Lol. I'm wondering if some of those hardware problems can be fixed or prevented by opening up the phone and giving it a periodic brush out / clean out? For example the headphone jack after becoming loose can probably be re-soldered, etc?
I don't think the solder connections are faulty on the headphone jack.
It just seems to be a little to loose for most 3,5mm plugs.
Some of my headphones give me a lot of trouble - others none at all.
And the more I use it - the less problems I get.
So I'm led to believe that it's more a problem of dust and corrosion that worsens the contact quality.
Talking about headphones, I use a wired BlackBerry headphones, seems ok for me, but sometimes when I move it in the jack, my music is paused (maybe this is related with the different standars of jacks?)
Even if you use a standard 3,5mm stereo connector with not 4th contact at all the phone's gonna interpret a slight loss of contact the same way it does pressing the media button on a media headset.
My Milestone sometimes started playing music when I was watching a movie or whatever.
But if your Phone is rootet you can use the app Autostarts to disable the phone reacting to the media button and therefore problems with loose contacts.

[Q] [i9001] Microphone not working

Hey!
I was a happy owner of SGS+ with BroodROM (or another popular rom from this forum, I don't remember the name) till yesterday, when the internal microphone decided to stop working. Any application (camera, dialer, etc.) just receives a constant regular noise from it and that's all(this makes the phone useless as I can't make a single phone call...). I've already come back to the stock rom(nothing changed) and I'm preparing to go and replace it in the shop (the phone still have 14 months of guarantee, but before I do it, I have a question:
Did anyone have ever got a similar problem and is there a way to repair it without replacing the phone?
Thanks for any help.
I had the same problem with my S3. Just get something thin, stick it in the microphone hole and give it a wiggle. Somtime's dirt and dust can get clogged dude. Worked for me. Don't force it up though otherwise you'll damage your microphone, a little dab'll do ya!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Repaired
Tip actually got useless, because the microphone repaired itself... Anyway thanks for it, it may become handy for me in future.
The weirdest thing is that it happened suddenly and with no reason. I didn't do anything to the phone(I tested it everyday and I used it as usually) and today I have tested the microphone with camera recorder and then with dialer and it worked...
So the problem came out of blue and repaired itself (or as you say, there was some dust which fall out, although how would the dust get in the mic over night and block it, so there would be completely no input at all?) out of blue too.
Anyway, phone works again, so it is a great news for me . Thanks for help.

Dead screen ?

My phone's screen just went black suddenly while i was using the phone last night. Nothing i do will wake the screen up, i tried rebooting by holding the power button, tried power+volume down also to boot into recovery .. no response. However the phone seems to be functioning as i can hear the screen lock sound. I think im stuck on the pin screen (the one to pass the boot-up-encryption). theres some vibration and feedback when i randomly press on the screen too.
The device is running Stock 6.0.1 , unrooted , stock kernel. Has this ever happened to anyone else ? could it be a software issue ?
I believe the LCD panel just went dead ..
Thanks!
Have you hooked it up to a computer and tried to see if it's recognised by ADB?

I had a nexus that had a faulty screen and randomly shut off or something half the screen will glitch out and one day it just stopped working but I could hear the lockscreen sounds. Your best bet would be to send it in for service maybe its a loose connecting or a hardware issue. When mine started acting up it was a loose connecting so if I hit the phone with my hand it would go back to normal and then it stopped working. Its a common issue if you do a google search many people have encountered this
That sounds to me like a return-under-warranty job. If you were in the UK you could quote the Sale of Goods Act, which specifies that an item must be of suitable quality and last a reasonable amount of time, but in my case when I returned my faulty N5 to Google after 18 months they were as good as gold, didn't quibble, simply replaced it with a refurbished one which appeared to me to be indistinguishable from brand new.
Since by definition your phone must be very close to its warranty period, depending on when you got it, I'd start with that. This is the link I used from the UK - maybe different if you're elsewhere, but you should find a link called "Get a call from a hardware specialist":

That makes sense. could be just a loose connector between the LCD panel and the MoBo ..
Problem is i live in Jordan and I got the phone from Dubai. Its still under warranty of the seller (Souq.com ; an online store .. kind of like Amazon of the middle east ), So i have to send my phone to Dubai to fix it. Now i could just go to a local phone repair shop and ask the guy to check the connectors, but im afraid that would void the warranty and not solve the problem ;( .

Well, if you figure out that it is just the screen, you can use this program for basic control with a lot of latency

Rear camera turn black when use it

Whenever I try to use the rear camera the display turns black while only showing the HUD. The HUD works fine, but the camera doesn't work at all. Nothing is blocking it either.
When switching camera modes (to manual mode for example), an error pops up saying that the "camera is not available"
IMPORTANT NOTE: The front facing camera is working perfectly fine.
Things I tried to do (aside from shipping it for repair):
1. Android repair via the PC companion software
2. Internal reset
3. Safe mode
4. Clearing cache files for the built-in camera app
5. Installing an alternative camera app (the built-in one was disabled)
6. downgrade and upgrade
7.change camera for new one (tested)
I had same situation with regular Z3. Someone brings it to service where I'm working and my first think was camera fault but changing camera didn't fix it. Near camera connection You can see some small capacitors, we call it filters. It looks like capacitors but it's soldered not only on opposite sides but 2 points on both sides. In regular Z3 there was 5 elements like this to change and after that camera starts working. I don't remember how exactly it's made in Z3c but it's really possible that it's the same issue and same way to fix it.
One more thing, if You can check one one more camera to exclude camera itself cause most issues like this are caused by faulty camera. I had many phones (most Z1 and Z1c) with this issue and changing camera always was the solution.
Good luck.
Same Here. Need help too.

I have three cameras and two z3c, I interchange camera and phone and always the same result
At this moment I don't have any Z3c to disassembly (except mu own but under warranty) to check where those capacitors are but if You could take a picture of camera connector on motherboard and near area I can mark which one should change.
@Chamelleon
Main camera not working
I have the same issue with my Z3 compact. The issue started happening on the 11th month of my one year warranty, I sent it for repair (14 business days y + shipping time back and forth). It came back with the same issue. Sent it back right away. After another three weeks without my phone, I got it back. Guess what? EXACT SAME ISSUE!
I called their support line explaining what happened, the guy told me that there is nothing they can do about it since my warranty expired. Of course they didn't have in consideration that I sent my phone before it expired and it took about seven weeks back and forth. There wasn't any sort of damage on my phone, was never dropped or damaged in any way, I never submerged it even if in theory, that would be ok. The report said "it has reviewed the functioning of the unit, unfortunately the defect is in the PCB so it is not able to undergo repairs to it."
The guy on the phone told me what he thought the report meant. It means there is damage on the main board(not caused by me) and the one year warranty manufacturer warranty department won't repair it. Maybe, if I had bought the 2 year "extended" warranty, they could do something about it. I asked if the issue is that my one year warranty was expired or if it is something that they just don't fix unless you get the "extended" warranty. He couldn't answer me and the only thing he said was "is there anything else I can help you with?"
From what I understood, there are two completely different departments, the one year manufacturer warranty that only cover some things. Not even sure what, because if it's broken screen, water damage or any physical abuse, they won't fix it. If it's a problem with the main board or PCB, they won't fix it either. It is a mystery to me what gets fixed in that department. The other department is the 2 year extended warranty. I'm not sure what they are willing to fix there, but from what they guy on the phone told me, it's more than the one year regular warranty.
Long story short, after two trips to FedEx, at least 8 hours total on phone calls, more than 7 weeks without my phone, I ended where I started. Sorry Sony, never again. Worst customer support I have ever experienced.
At this photo I can see only 4 of this capacitors and marked it, maybe it should be four or one I missed cause quality. Anyway regular Z3 has 5 like this and after changing all 5 camera start working again. You can desolder it from most Sony phones, I used capacitors from MK16 (Xperia Pro). So find some Sony board with capacitors like this and ask someone with good hot air solder station (if You don't have one) to change it.
Any news to this problem? I bought used Z3C with black rear camera problem because it was cheap. (Yes, the front facing camera is working perfectly fine). So far I have only tried software fixes and obviously they didn't help. I ordered new camera module from ebay and I'm now waiting for it. Has anyone tried soldering new capacitors if the new camera module doesn't help?
EDIT: Here is another thead with same problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help/rear-camera-hardware-detected-black-t3231509
As I said I've done it only in regular Z3 but If You gonna try give me some info is this solution is also working in Z3c case.

I'm still waiting for new camera module. If the new module is not working I will try soldering new capacitors. I will keep you up to date here .
Any news??
Completely forgot to post this, hope it help someone. I made the same thing with black camera on my Z3c. After I broke audio port in my Z3c and had to send it to warranty I took my gf phone, Z3c also. I restored my TWRP backup to her phone and all except camera was working. Camera was completely black but only main, front was OK. After that I was afraid that it's another hardware problem like Yours but after reflashing to stock problem gone. I repeated it few times to check if I'm right and I was. After flashing backup from another phone even without TA and Kernel backup there is a problem with camera.
So I was wrong saying it's only hardware problem. If anyone still has this issue and didn't reflashed his phone check it first.
@Chamelleon yes it's somehow a software problem (if we could say that ). For me i did fix it.
I did a Nandroid backup for my black Z3 compact (camera works properly) an restored it on my new White Z3 compact (also camera woks fine). after restoring the white z3c rear camera shows black screen, the front one is good.
=> i did a format factory reset : didn't work.
=> flashed a TFT file : didn't work.
=> flashed a D5803_23.4.A.1.232_Customized FR.ftf : IT WORKS !
and then i remembered that my phone was from "SFR" , a french network provider.
i hope this helps also
Edit: too new account, would be nice if a mod unlocks the posting of the direct image links and fixes the links - I think they are useful as this is a common problem and i already invested hours translating russian and documenting my research nobody else should have to do it
for me it was a hardware problem after dropping it.. I even changed the camera module.
Did some reseach, russian sites have some input:
Layout1: directupload.net/file/d/4472/9andayji_jpg.htm
Layout2: directupload.net/file/d/4472/vzvgbqqo_jpg.htm
It was loose, but when i tried to push it down with a hot metal to "solder" it, at some point it jumped away and was lost because it is so tiny!
Missing part: directupload.net/file/d/4472/qmut35qt_jpg.htm
The russian site suggest this soldering of bridges, however its not clear to me if they mean one of this electronic pieces (4pins each) or also the lower one.
Russian: directupload.net/file/d/4472/ag43kmda_jpg.htm
The question is now how these (likely) filters (because so close to the camera have to be bridges, it seemed to have worked for some russians:
Pins: directupload.net/file/d/4472/k86j53hr_png.htm
Not sure if there are 4 indipendend pins or if for those small footprints of electronic devices they use only the edges and then they have the same signal.
I was not able to see any text written on those two things, however i didnt have any magnifying glass.

Me not (also changed the HW cam), the guys on the russian site yes (even with other similar sony).
Just check if there is something loose, maybe you are lucky and its a software problem *fingers crossed*. To me it happend exactly after dropping (and changing the screen which went without problems) so I was quite sure its HW based.

Hi basmok,
First off thanks for the research and for the pictures!
I have a similar story, phone was dropped, rear camera won't work, tried different ROMs without any luck then took phone apart and saw that one of the four tiny capacitors
just fell off and now it's MIA...
The last pic from your post (directupload.net/file/d/4472/k86j53hr_png.htm) which I assume shows the soldering of the bridge doesn't seem to work...
Do you still have that pic?
Also did you make any progress on the camera fix or gave up?
Thanks,
Ati

You were lucky, they were already in the recycle bin and deleted on the camera. Best I could do picturewise, i dont have a macro lens. Here we go, added all to imgurl so hopefully they survive longer: http://imgur.com/a/Of1DY
And no, didnt make any progress as i dont know what component they are. Normally all components have lasered some code but not sure if its just too tiny for my eyes or if they dont have it. I was a bit unlucky as i didnt have a soldering tool, so i tried it by pushing the pin down with a paperclip which i headed with a lighter --- well it jumped away and was not the best approach
