[Q] Please help. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so i got a problem a big one.
Today i came home from my night shift, turn on my pc and the download for stock ics rom was done.
My phone was running miui and i thought i'll flash stock rom because of battery drain on miui.
So i put my Note in download mode, connect it to PC Odin, select PDA file and press flash.
Everything went well until the phone didn't want to power on. (that's because i had less than 15% when i flashed). But that was not the first time i did that, Uselessly i just leave my phone turned off so that battery can get a bit of juice. But today i was a bit to sleepy and i went to recovery mode and pressed wipe data. Before the wipe was done i remember brickbug .
Then i quickly turned the phone off and put it download mode tried to flash the same rom with odin 2times but no luck. On odin it goes fine but gets stuck at 1/4 or so.
So the third time i unplugged the cable and now my phone is saying: Frimware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select download mode in Kies & try again.
But i still can put my phone in to the download mode and odin does recognize it.
So can someone help me?
Is my phone totally bricked (dead main-borad), or semi-bricked (flash drive gone).
And if i take my phone to the official repair service i don't have any counter and it say's that is a original Samsung firmware instaled. Will they now if i go there and play stupid, like what is recovery mode? and tell them that that hapend when i tried to install official update over kies?
I will press THANKS button for any help.
Thank you in advance.

If it constantly stuck at factoryfs or data.img then likely you became victim of super brick bug (as positive hystory is you have wiped) in that case better go to service centre.

Ok.
Ok. Thank you for your response.
Will the service repair my phone under the warranty as the bug is known thing?

If you have a 0 flash counter and the phone cannot boot into system they probably will accept to repair it under warranty, I presume. They will not listen to your arguments about brick bug at all. The principal is they will accept if you have no trace of rooted phone or increased flash counter.
btw, if they do not accept warranty, there is still someway to revive your phone, although will loose some memory space. cheers.

Thanks!
Yes I've read about that. +/- 5gb of internal storage..
Now, that's a tough decision, if i go and take my phone to the service i can get a full repair or i can get no warranty. I mean i only have phone for about 1month now. So i have 23 months of warranty left.
If i go and sacrifice 5gb of storage, and in future something goes wrong, will they at the service know that or am i safe?
And what about if i do that and then take it to the service like, where are 5gb? isn't that a 16gb phone? If you know what do i mean.

I am fairly certain that the last argument of "where has 5gb gone" will not work. Just need to make sure you comply with the conditions for warranty to have it repaired under warranty.
If you revive it using repartition, in most case 3gb will be gone. In some case only 1gb loss but some other case it is even >5gb depend on how much damage has been done to your internal memory. Re-partition is reversible, though. Still, it looks like your phone still meet conditions for warranty if I read correctly. cheers.

You have warranty, claim it.

However i decided to take it to the service because i still have warranty.
But I'm concerned, i have a few questions for you guys!
1. Will they on the service know that the phone dose not have installed original rom from them (Open Europe rom) insted of that i did instaled rom from other mobile operator (I wanted to sell the phone). ??
2. If there is no flash counter, and triangle, they can not know that the phone was ever rooted, correct?
Thank you for your help! I will press the tnx button every time.

AFAIK it doesn't matter which region is on the phone, so long as it's not rooted warranty still valid.
Yes correct.
It's a good idea to claim warranty for this, only true fix atm.

Bricked while flashing bootloader (twice)

Hello,
Few days ago I bought my girlfriend an X8.
Since I have too an X8 with all the root and such things done I though it might be a good idea to do that on girlfriend phone.
BUT, second day after buying that phone, and trying to get exact modifications I did on my X8 , her phone got hard bricked and I couldn't boot it up, not even to recovery mode since computer usb didn't recognize it anymore...
I think i was in phase while trying to get root access..
So, I went to the shop to get my replacement phone wich they did gave me...
Soon after I got home, I was trying again to make same modifications, and it was sucesfull... I installed custom rom, with root access and that was it...
BUT here comes the problem - while trying to use Titanium Backup , i was constatly getting the message that my phone isn't rooted so I downloaded root checker from market and yes, it said that i'm not rooted... Funny thing, busybox and superuser worked just fine...Then i though it might be a problem cause I didn't update superuser on latest version, so I did it, and now the superuser told me i'm not rooted...
To make long story short, i came up to flash stock rom, and then back to custom rom to make clean install again, this time I wanted to unlock bootloader too to put a custom kernel for that rom, but after the process, phone quickly restarted 2 times and from then it doesn't want to boot up, just like the first phone, doesn't react on power button not even to usb...
I'm so frustrated because on my X8 everything went fine, and i did on her exactly what I did on mine, but I bricked her 2 new phones and I don't know what to do next
Is there any way to back it up to life again??? (i think they won't replace my phone again at the shop)

what custom room you using to unlock bootloader?
You can't even use the Repair section of the PC Companion?
what ROM do you use when you try to unlock bootloader?
I was using stock rom (Elcair) when i tried to unlock bootloader...
and none of the usb methods works cause it doesn't get recognized by PC...
Uff...to any hard brick, your phone should get flash mode with fleshtool or seus/pcc..maybe its some mistake..to root phone, easier way is with fleshtool..

have you tried installing ggsetup-2.2.0.10.exe and trying on another usb slot? the file is in FlashTool_0.2.9.1 package
Yes, i've installed Gordons Gate, but phone wont go into recovery mode anymore and it doesn't flash led when I plug the charger into phone (i've left it last night on charger but no success)...Complete deadly now cause of bootloader unlock, strange...

this is strange.. not reacting on usb..
when u turn off the phone then plug usb cable + pressing back button i call that downloading mode.
I don't know how to help u anymore..
btw what rom u're installed when the phone restarted twice? is it overclocked?
just curious
It was stock rom -> Eclair 2.1
No overclocking modules were installed...
I've came upon some similar thread on the internet, the guy had same problem, and someone suggested him that the only way to restore the device is to put it on RIFF JTAG box
Links are here:
jtagbox.com/jtag-news/riff-jtag-sony-ericsson-xperia-x8a-se-shakira-unbrick-boot-repair-supported/
youtube.com/watch?v=ujH_IpsskLg
....
So, my question for now is - Can I buy JTAG box from ebay, and soldered PCB for X8 from here ( multi-com.pl/index.php?itlskel_lang=en_US&itlskel_pgid=details&id_pr=8466 )...
Will that work it out ? Question goes to JTAG users hopefully.
Please modify URL's since I can't put full URL's yet
you just bought the phone rite? send it to service.
no need to buy anything to do it yourself. That riff box costs around $150 and there are people in various cities who might be able to repair your phone (check website of riff box) with fees but try with SE service centre first. You might get it done for free.
If you have followed the steps it really should not end up like that. It is really discouraging to read posts like yours. It makes me ponder twice whether I should go and try the unblock my bootloader myself.

I think SE center won't cost $150 (and if cost that much rather than buying those tools or pay SE i will buy another x8 it cost cheaper than that).
I agree with you, send it back to SE center and tell them u're upgrading phone software but the the power or internet down in the middle of process and your phone dead.
No, the thing is, i've already told them I was upgrading my software and phone crashed when I swaped my first phone, so if I send them back another phone in that short time I'll become suspect, and I highly doubt they'll accept my warranty
btw. I really don't know what could be the reason for bricking
Basebands versions were xxx015 on the both devices...
men try again with seus
just turn your pc/windows on safe mode with networking
ive experience that
then
do this like i said in other thread
try it again with this steps
open pc companion (dont plug your phone)
choose support zone click start
select phone software update
click start
then CLICK REPAIR PHONE
and that its you know the next step
you will see initializing AND downloading the phone software
Will try it tonight but I higly doubt since phone doesn't react with LED anyhow
Thank you for your tip anyway

There's nothing wrong trying right?
Besides if they're not accepting your warranty you will pay anyway...
And if SE center tell you to pay ask them how much in front before doing any reparation.
Maybe $10, $20 etc i doubt it will cost as high as new phone.
help... i am also in the same situation..my phone bricked when i was bootloading , now its completely black and it cant on ...when i connect to pc , pc cant detect ..help please..i just bought my w8 about 3weeks only ..my dad's present ...hlp please

Galaxy Note - restored Rom, now Bricked!!!

I don't expect I can be helped, but I needed to restore my rooted Note and after going through the backup/restore process my note died and now will not switch on in any mode (download including). After reading on here I would appear to have "bricked" my Note. Can any one advise / help? Can I claim on phone insurance? Is there any point returning it to Samsung?

you are in stock ICS LPY Germany ???
restored with recovery stock or CWM CF??
The rooting process will have invalidated your warranty....
BUT....
if you are fully hard bricked (sounds like it), take it to Samsung service and say, "I was doing an official update to stock ROM with KIES and it just died".
Good luck.
why is this in development?
oh yeah you are bricked and most of all
YOU ARE ON THE WRONG FORUM CATEGORY....

Thanks for your reply's - this is my first post, so sorry if its in the wrong place, I'm not an expert just wanted some advice didn't mean to offend anyone!!!
yes it was stock ICS (germany)
and recovery was CWM CF
think I'll try Samsung service then if all else fails will try to claim on phone / home insurance.
Darn.
Good luck

you don't do it, just say to them your phone was off can't boot, just that, because they already know the reason was, cheer up!
I presume you've tried taking battery out and wait 10sec, put back in.
Is recovery and download mode working???
Recovery = holding vol up + home + power btn
Download = holding vol down + home + power btn
If....with odin classic stop in the flash gingerbread procedure you are in brick situation....
prove to retun in Gingerbread firmware
Hehe that's happen when you do stuff without READ FIRST. You fuc*ed up your /data partition
anyway there is a post in general forum about how to reformat partitions
If you have warranty send it to Sammy. If not then check that post.

I cannot enter download or recovery, no matter what I do and cannot see how I will be able to repartition if I cannot switch device on. I know I've made a mistake - but everyone has to start tinkering somewhere and this was mine, if I was an expert I wouldn't be in this situation in the first place. Last resort, I buy a cack phone and never play around again (but we wouldn't get anywhere if people did that).
I think you can try to get another phone from samsung. just say you ware using it as ussual then it just died after left charging over night. Don't mention words like brick or root or rom or recovery bla bla bla. And if you get lucky this time, i recommend doing some researches before doing anything serious next time

Hi there, tried the battery out and wait then switch on, did nothing. Waited 10 mins tried again, still nothing. Computer will not recognise connected device by USB. It would appear that I'm doomed!!!!
Send the phone back to Samsung
Also this not happens because you play with your phone. This happens when you do stuff without READ FIRST. People need to understand that if you want to do anything you need learn how to do it before doing it.
There are HUNDREDS of threads about this bricks.

OK - I get it, I should not have done this, but I have and now I need to deal with it. If I didn't do something every time I was told not to do it, I'd be a sad lonely man (but maybe with a phone that works). Oh well, I'll have to buy an SIII then.....

Hard Bricked Galaxy Note GT-N7000 - Possible Fix?

Hello!
During flashing leaked kernel my phone was on soft brick, I wiped cache partition and data in CWM. This was the end of my beloved Note, it is 100% dead and none of the possible fixes posted works so far.
I have heard there is a possible fix by re partitioning and connection the phone in Linux environment, this way the computer reads the phone and can be fixed by repartitioning and could get into download mode. Please let me know if anybody confirms this.
Alternatively, what is the next step. My phone is still under warranty but I am scared if Samsung would find out the history of rooting or as my Phone is 100% dead they would not be able to find out, confused.......
If the motherboard needs to be replaced, how much would it cost, where should I take and most important if my phone recovers can I still play around with custom ROMs?
Look forward to suggestions bring my phone live as I purchased it on loan and it brings immense pain to pay emi for a dead phone.
Regards,
AK
Even it bricked by emmc bug, there shud be download mode still available
-First try to get other charged battery (or charge yours) and try to put in download mode, and look to Lt upper corner what is your flash score. If it is zero, simply reclain warranty.
-Otherwise try this

So, no way of getting DM or looking at binary count.

Your phone is under warranty yet you are asking for costs? Those "recovery" method will give you a "crippled" device in terms of mem capacity.
So go and claim warranty. They wont know anything since your phone is totally dead anyway.

Hey, I just cam back from SS service. they said it could be a motherboard issue and they are replacing the motherboard.
Does that mean they would install the Stock Rom from fresh, I am sure yes.
Waiting for my recovered phone and educating myself to safely play around with custom ROMs.
One last question, which is the best stable custom ROM available for Galaxy Note, in terms of UI and better battery life?
Many Thanks.

Congrats on the replacement;
Custom ROM's are kind of personal preference, Best bet is to do your research now while you wait and you can decide for yourself which features you like / want / need in a ROM..
Suggestions to check would be ParanoidAndroid / CleaNote from my point of view, I've tried both but still run Stock ICS with custom Kernel.. Suits my needs...

what is the current rom on your phone? have you tried going to recovery and wiping dalvik cache? still same thing? If it is, worst case you can try (since both Recovery and Download works still) is to wipe data in recovery and restart your phone again(Don't try doing this if your using an infected kernel and/or in ICS Rom)
Going back,
You have a soft bricked phone.. Why would you exchange it for warranty? you can easily fix your issue without returning it to Samsung.

Don't worry, if it is with samsung alrd. They'll sure give you replacement of the motherboard if they can't do anything to your existing one. This is considered as the "manufacturing fault", and therefore, they must be able to replace it.
1st few batches, N7000 came out under gingerbread 2.3.6 technology, and it worked very well without the eMMC brick bug. It is happened only when they upgrade to ICS, with their own stock kernel, which triggered the brick bug.
So long as they are delaying the fix for their own stock kernel with the eMMC brick bug removed, I think samsung is still liable to give replacement to user, no matter what you did to your device. As long as it is eMMC brick bug, and you have your warranty.
Why ?
very simple... Even most of the samsung sales person on their respective outlets, they know a lil bit or perhaps don't know at all about this bug. Unless the sales person is those who likes to play with handphone like most of us here.
And if they do know... they won't tell you as well about this bug. Otherwise, will you buy it ? :fingers-crossed:
So as a consumer, we have the right to be replaced if the bug has been triggered due to factory reset / wipe of data, since no one told us about this. **peace**.
Really do hope you get your replacement once they call you to take your phone.
Good Luck !

What on earth is up with my Note??

I bought a second-hand Note yesterday and it is constantly freezing up. I've tried flashing a stock CPW ROM to fix the issue but it still persists. Also under 'USB storage' the device says that there is only 8.24gb in TOTAL. Whoever owned it had clearly been flashing ROMs themselves as it was running a recent German ICS, the custom kernel counter reads '9' in download mode and the serial number is 000000000000 (though the IMEI is intact. When the device does run it seems fine but if I play with it within ten minutes it will freeze and need a force reboot.
Is there any hope for this device or should I just give up on it and try and contact the seller?
Get your money back.. You got scammed.. That's a suberbricked phone partial recovered by the pit file method
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Ok, Firstly I would recommend to flash a Stock GB firmware via ODIN, Once flashed, boot into recovery (or under settings) and do a full factory reset.
Then check your available storage space, It should be around 11gb, If it is not, there is a chance the previous owner bricked it and used patched pit files to re-partition the emmc (works, but loses around 2-3gb of space)
Also, as for your serial, This **should** get restored with a GB flash. If not let us know and we can look at some other solutions.
Did you buy this phone from a company / Online seller ?
Sounds like whoever had your phone had hard bricked it and used a PIT File recovery method to work around the problem thus losing some of the internal storage..
Usually once recovered they can work without issue just with a smaller internal storage;

Should give you some further info..

I wouldn't encourage him to re flash anything on that phone... If he can get his money back he MUST have a partially working phone not a suberbricked phone or the seller could say he damaged it and as he does not have warranty is screwed...
Worst case if the guy does not want to give your money back.. Go to a Samsung repair center and get your mother board replaced paying some bucks

True, Getting a refund is top priority..........But if it wasnt a genuine seller and the OP is stuck with this phone, He should at least try to get it working.
He will have to re-brick it to claim warranty or else they would spot the binary count and re-partitioned emmc.
Even then they may not repair as he is not the original buyer, I know it sounds far-fetched but these big companies dont give a **** about their customers, Only their money.
EDIT: damn the 8 thanks limit !!! I owe you one

I bought it from a private seller. Do you think flashing Gingerbread will get the storage back? I've flashed a firmware that was stock (not leaked) ICS but it was a PDA only file. No repartitioning or anything. I've downloaded LPF firmware with CSC and modem etc which I'd intended to flash to see if that works. Is that a bad idea? The phone works fine for a bit but completely hangs every few minutes. It told me there was a software update, downloaded it but the phone freezes when I try to run it.
A refund is unlikely. The seller lives miles away and I don't drive. I can trade it in to a phone recycler and only lose £38 but would prefer to fix it if it's even possible. If it didn't keep freezing I wouldn't mind only having 8gb of storage.

As mentioned above I think before commencing any flashing you should contact the seller and ask for a refund ! He / She did not specify the phone had been tampered with did they ??
You dont want to be buying a phone and then having to flash this and that just to get it in a working state.
Theres no guarantee that flashing GB will fix all your issues, But GB is the best firmware to fix issues, ICS is good but still buggy.
Anyway, If you cannot get your money back (which you should try as hard as possible to do)
Download a stock GB firmware, Flash it without repartitioning (this time) and do a full wipe, then see whether kies will update it.
Does your phone memory say something like Total space 8.xxGB ? or free space 8.xxGB ??
You could try to flash the normal unmodified pit files to put the phone back into its bricked state and try to claim warranty, But theres no guarantee it will be repaired for free
EDIT: Just seen your above post, Have a look at this thread for more in-depth details on recovering from a brick - http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...soHQCQ&usg=AFQjCNEkw1FE2ALb5gUsNOFFGIi5y-U_NQ
Luckily I have never bricked my Note (Yet) so i dont know much about recovering from one.
It says 'total space' 8.24gb (
What's the best Gingerbread file to flash? Got a link?
Thanks guys. Appreciate your rapid assistance.
I'm not having much luck lately. Two faulty Nexus 7s and I thought this would be a good purchase once I'd given up on those
I can now barely do anything on the phone before it freezes. Seems worse than ever.
this is the GB firmware I always revert to when I have any issues
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69014495/N7000XXLC1_N7000XXLB2_N7000CPWLB2_HOME.tar.md5
Do a full wipe AFTER it has flashed, Never wipe on stock ICS kernels
Cheers for the DB link. I was tearing my hair out over stupid Hotfile links when I was searching for one.
Is my storage permanently crippled then??
And sorry for the noob questions, I'm new to the Note. I can't believe Samsung have screwed up so much that you can't even do a wipe on their stock firmware even when it's OFFICIAL. That's a CRAZY mess up.

Well, You will not be able to get the missing 3Gb back if that's what you're asking.. And yes - very bad move from Samsung....
Yes I agree it is a bad design flaw, Of which they are aware of. Luckily there have been workarounds since the beginning, Only the users that dont read up on the issue will suffer the brick (the previous owner of your Note for example)
There are ways to recovery *Some* of the lost space but not all of it. Its a tricky method but if you want to give it a shot, Check the link i posted earlier.
Theres also a way to swap the internal with external using a vold.fstab swap method So say you had a 64gb external sd this would become your internal sd
If i was you Id just try to get it working, Then keep all your important stuff on the external sd and make do with the lack of internal space.
If it all goes wrong and you cannot fix it, Either send it off for repair and hope for the best / pay for new motherboard (if they will let you) or sell it on (but be honest) and purchase another one.

Ok. Well if I could get the device running perfectly I wouldn't be so bothered about the missing 3GB. COuld I expect to face any problems other than this if I flash Gb and update through Kies or is my internal storage now permanently shot to pieces and prone to hangs and freezes?

As far as I know - if the re-partition has been done correctly then you should not be facing these issues.. There's alot of advice in the above thread I posted and I think forrest1971 is familiar with the PIT / Re-partition activities.
Fortunately I have never had to repartition / Run PIT files.. The good thing is it's booting and working at the minute so there's probably a lot of help / advice you can glean from these forums.. Unfortunately I'm not able to offer too much in relation to this one..

[Q] Samsung Captivate hard bricked. HELP.

So the other day i was on my captivate and i had just factory reset it to original eclair. so i tried updating it with kies but it kept failing. So i then tried using Odin and accidently checked bootloader and now my phone turned off and wont show any signs of life. PLEASE IM ASKING YOU PLEASE HELP! What do I do?
Can u get into Download mode with button combo or jig ?
If ur phone shows zero signs of life, even when plugged in to a wall charger, then it is probably hard bricked and so u will need jtag service in order to bring ur phone back to life. Check out mobiletechvideos.com, they can fix ur phone.

But i dont get it. I was flashing with odin and it magically formatted the bootloader. Is there a way for me to fix it by myself like restoring the bootloader. I got my phone only 2 month ago. I dont have 40 dollars to invest on jtag service. Like how would they fix it. Could I please get instructions? Thanks and most help is appreciated

It doesn't format the bootloaders per say, it you flash a stock ROM with Odin that has bootloaders and if it gets interrupted while it's replacing them, your phone will be bricked as it doesn't have a way to boot (hence the name bootloaders).
The JTAG service basically pushes the bootloaders into the phone. It's something we can't do on our own unless we have the right equipment (riftbox).
Like 4-2ndtwin mentioned, try to get some response from your phone, anything that would show life. That means you can recover on your phone. From there, you'd have to be able to get in download mode and flash Odin KK4 without ANY interruption.
My phone wont turn on and when i put it in charge it wont even show the battery charging. What else can i do to fix my phone?

Try the button combo to get in download mode (could even try a jig). If that fails too, you'll have to get jtag service.

The only alternative I can suggest you is to find that service around your place, hopefully for cheaper.

From what I've read in your thread, you had the i9000 image working, correct? If so, why not just roll with it?
All Captivate/i9000 rom works with the i9000 bootloader. Captivate GB Rom will need to get the 2.3.5 i9000 Music Player APK, but aside from that, it all works. AOSP roms like Cyanogenmod and Slimbean will work out of the box if you get the captivate version. To install them, you'll need a slight workaround though:
Flash a kernel with CWM.
From there, flash the Captivate Glitch Kernel V13. It only comes in .ZIP format, which is why you need a CWM kernel before hand
Flash CM7 to convert the partition table(IMPORTANT. Rom will not boot if you skip this step.)
Flash anything from here on. If it throw a status 7 about device not being SGH-i896/SGH-i897, etc..., flash the Glitch Kernel before attempting to flash the ROM. You do not need to flash CM7 again.
(I know other ROM should have converted the partition table, but in reality it doesn't. Since you're flashing from Glitch, a CM7/MIUI kernel, they assumes you already have the MTD partition layout, and only resize it instead of doing a full conversion. CM7 check the partition table regardless of which kernel you're flashing it from.)
As a plus, Deep Idle works only with the i9000 bootloader. You'll get sleep of death otherwise. If you want your ATT World Phone image back, you can flash the custom param.lfs and change it manually. This can only be done from Touchwiz ROM though.
