TO CLARIFY: Im not looking for great deals, im looking for a solid, higher end adapter.
I bought a cheap one from amazon a while back, but it was so poorly made that it didn't even fit my Nexus- plastic was extruding through the micro USB plug.
Pretty straightforward, post any recommendations for an N7 USB OTG cable.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
They are fairly cheap, but they feel just like your average usb cable. I like the fact that the micro usb portion is as an angle which allows devices to be standing up in portrait mode.

Well, mine came with a small amount of plastic coming from the slits in the micro USB input. It also did not fit my gnex, so we tried to cut it, and mangled it beyond repair lol.
I was thinking about an otg adapter that has no cable, but is more of a mount. It's hard to explain. I picture something akin to a plugin- one end is a male micro USB plug, and the other is the female USB 2.0 input.

Just ordered two of those. I have a GN, and would love to be able to quickly whip out a cable like this, with my SD card reader and back up photos from my camera without involving my computer.
What app do you guys end up using for moving files and such around?

I mainly use ES File Explorer. Works fairly well and doesn't crash on large files.

now that its been confirmed stickmount will play directly off a flash drive, does speed matter when considering a flash drive for this sole purpose? is a micro SD card fast enough? i'd like to get a 64GB drive/card that's only purpose is use with this tablet.
Micro or standard SD has nothing to do with it. Class 10 cards are designed for fast large file transfer like movies or pictures.
I do think you may get better performance out of a flash memory stick, in addition to not needing a SD card reader. SD speeds can be limiting. Real data would be interesting.

That's what I was asking, should i stick with a thumb drive, or can i get an SD card, I guess i'll stick with a thumb drive, If speed won't matter too much i might get a slow 64gb, if it does maybe i'll stick with 32, thoughts?

Don't take my word as Gospel, but I'm sure if you're streaming, a slower one would probably work fine. If you're looking to transfer, faster is, well, faster (depending on the write speed of N7's internal memory). Might do some research when I'm not on the phone.
Planning on testing movie streaming through OTG on a cheapo thumb drive but I don't anticipate any problems.
will this allow me to hook up my dslr and transfer photos?
depends on how your dslr mounts. worse case scenario you get a usb SD card reader (assuming its sd and not cf).

Hello to everyone! Thx,
If anyone knows the pinout for Con3 (rear camera) that would be a great help as I don't have the equipment to test and will cost me money to have the board scoped for USB data+/- and a good 5v+/- by a local shop. If anyone has the tools or all ready knows the pin out for Con3 that would speed things up a lot.
Thx.
Update pretty sure con3 is out of the question (mostly grounds and a couple low power lines)if anyone has any ideas please feel free to share. Could tap into microUSB, but not what I was going for.
are you trying to get power from that is that for data, could possibly using the battery harness for power work at all?
Yes could use the power coming from he battery but it is a bit to high voltage so would have to run an in line resistor to bring it down to 5v. I'm hoping to find the simplest way so most people could do it them self's but also other ways swell.

...anyway, back on topic, the SD card mod is very intriguing. I love my N7 tablet, but the memory limitations are a constant roadblock.I don't care about the lack of a rear camera, I don't use an HDMI out too much, but 16gb (or God help you, 8gb) is just not enough.
I'll be following this project closely. Thanks.
Interesting, I've been planning on doing something similar. Instead I'm going to wire in a thumb drive. HP makes one that is so small it's about the size of a SD card. I think the read and write speeds are faster than a sd and it's also cheap for 32gb

Many of the traces from J4 - the connector for the front camera (which is the same connector and camera used in the ASUS Transformer and many other devices) - route through CON3 before veering off to the flash (for storage) or the networking chips (direction connection for Skype, maybe?). Some of the data signals have unconnected resistors at CON3, presumably because there is currently no back camera. Some of the traces run in length-matched parallel (for differential signaling and/or timing purposes); some of these have terminating resistors and decoupling caps at CON3.
CON3 is almost identical to J4, just with the pins in one row rather than two so a flat ribbon cable can be used instead of the plug/socket the front camera uses. CON3 has 4 additional pins. I haven't scoped it all out yet - I haven't been wanting to tear my N7 *quite* that far down yet - but I just bought a whole unit with a cracked screen that I intend to do unholy things to as I experiment with cool mods.

If you go to staples you can pick up a module just like you're describing (only 16GB) for $12. It's a staples brand, but once you open it up, it's got Sandisk written all over it (literally - laser-etched on the chip).
If there were a 64GB version like that and it was possible to have it work along with charging...that would be perfect.
Here's a photo of the one I'm hacking up. Right now it's just going to be wired externally. If it's discovered that it can be used at the same time as charging I'll be putting one internally.

I wish I had that talent. LOL would love to add a 64gb internal chip to this thing. Alternatively, if you could design a case with chip in it and allow for pass through charging, that would work too.

I Found this little USB HUB and it fits perfect.
This is it before it got striped
Still just in mock up and not connected yet, but it does still close up fine. So I'm pretty sure a hub is a go(for me anyway) and still have room for some flash storage that will go where the rear camera should have gone or just beside the hub
I've been following your work here and elsewhere. Questions...
1. This is the first reference I recall to using a hub. I assume to get around the simultaneous problem? Good idea. Is the hub you chose recognized /working natively? And with an SD reader' with a card loaded?
2. Unrelated... I noticed a couple screws missing, along the left side (top in your pic). And the foam between screws 2 (missing) and 3 (still there) is gone. Did you do this, or was it shipped like that? Is this a recent C8 model?
Nice work BTW, I'm following this closely....

Not sure if it's smaller or not, but they're both close enough that they could both fit where iAppleDev has his hub at in his photo. If we can figure out a way to get the external flash setup installed AND functional while the nexus charges, I think i'd go for a 32GB or 64GB and put it where iAppleDev has the hub.
I know there are a couple threads out there concerning this cable/adapter. Most were of suggestions but no feedback. Anyone find a good one out there that works with flash drive? I know some people mentioned that the cables they found blocked the head phone jack, did anyone find one that didn't? Any information would be appreciated thanks!

i grabbed this. works perfectly. has sd, micro sd AND usb ports. I find it to be awesome to have the choice.
Go on ebay and use the following search phrase:
otg micro cable left angled
Look at the pictures carefully though in order to make sure that a) it ends in the desired USB female connector, and b) the left angle is truly left. There are some listings that are still right-angled even though the description says "left angled".
Oh, and you'll likely have to wait for shipping from China.
Also on Amazon if you search for:
SANOXY Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable Flash Drive SD T-Flash Card Adapter
The first one in the results looks like it's angled correctly. Also from China.

I know its awesome. They have plenty of those for the samsung galaxy tabs (some withe even 5 different ports) made by Samsung. However the 7 pin adapter doesn't work the nexus. I'm hoping samsung does the same (with an audio jack) for the Nexus. Kind of infuriating that there is no support from Google or Samsung insight for accessories. Especially since these attachments are what separates them from their competitors (IPad can't use a flash drive because of the power limitation)
I wonder if this might work sense the 1 above appears to be sold out:

I recently purchased a Patuoxun Multimedia Dock advertised to be compatible with the Note II, S3, and S4. Please see the bottom of the post for product information.
I am quite happy to report that this $24 dock functions almost exactly as I expected. I have only seen videos of the Samsung Multimedia dock, but from what I can tell this off-brand dock works nearly the same. USB ports and HDMI output can be used simultaneously. For example, I can watch Netflix on the big screen and control the phone with a mouse at the same time.
The two USB ports can be used for standard mice, keyboards, USB drives, SD card readers, and unpowered generic USB hubs. Just for fun, I chained three USB hubs together, plugged in a mouse, and it worked flawlessly. (Not sure if this proves anything, but I thought it was cool.) I have read that NTFS drives are usable after the installation of a special kernel or driver.
However, there are a few points worth mentioning. There is ever-so-slight, but perceptible HDMI lag. (My standalone MHL adapter exhibits this behavior, too.) Mice and keyboards are definitely usable, but you can tell the lag is there. I have a few hypotheses: 1. Perhaps the dock indeed lags some. 2. Perhaps my ROM/Kernel/whatever is a part of it. 3. Perhaps a bit of both.
Also, when a USB mouse is plugged in, HDMI output auto-rotates to landscape, the phone screen turns off, and roughly ~1/2s of HDMI lag occurs (presumably due to a software bug that occurs when a USB mouse is used). Many threads say this happens with the official Samsung dock also. This issue does not occur with ShareKM (due to the nature of the app), and others report that Bluetooth mice do not suffer the 1/2s of lag.
If anyone knows of a solution to the HDMI lag and USB mouse lag issues, I'd love to hear them.
I'll do my best to respond to questions about the dock if anyone has them.

My rooted and ROM'd AT&T Note II works quite fine with this dock. If you're in the market for a considerably cheaper solution than Samsung's $100 dock, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.
In fact, if enough people are interested, I'll see if I can try it out with other Note II's, S3's, and S4's.
Perhaps the Amazon description means they do not provide technical support, because my phone is obviously supported functionally.
I don't remember this being in the eBay description, or I wouldn't have purchased it. Quite frankly, I'm glad I didn't see it becuase there was no way I was shelling out Samsung's asking price.

The distinction for Amazon however, is that if you buy something and it doesn't work, and you know there's a chance it may not work, then you pay the return and restocking fee.
I know it's not much in the grand scheme of things, but 'caveat emptor' as they say.
Ah, I see. I didn't know Amazon had that rule - I'll keep it in mind for future purchases.

Thanks for the review of this cheaper knock off of the Samsung dock. I want one for my S3. Is it possibly an issue related to your TV's HDMI port settings? For instance some Tv's allow "game mode" for the port to eliminate as much of the processing within the TV as possible to reduce lag.
Thanks for the suggestion. I do have my TV set to "Game Mode" to minimize lag, but this dock and my generic MHL adapter both still exhibit some lag.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
I have official dock and have a lag and frame drop when mouse is connected. My understanding is that is due of software picture rendering to accommodate mouse cursor and wide screen movies. If you unplug mouse lag should be lower and picture quality msy be better but movies in Netflix will have incorrect aspect ratio (youtube doesn't have that issue). Depends on your primary use - Netflix, YouTube $35 Chromecast its easier to set up and allow for 1080p video.

Hi. I read this review and bought the dock for my galaxy note 3. I cannot seem to connect the phone to my TV through a hdmi lead.
Did yours just appear on the TV when you dock the phone? Or is there some setup required ?

Sorry for the delayed response. External power is required to use the HDMI and USB ports on the dock, so make sure the dock is plugged in first. Other than that, all I have to do is power the dock and plug in the HDMI cable, and my phone display is mirrored on the TV. The following works for me: 1. Power the dock. 2. Dock the phone. 3. Plug in HDMI cable. 4. ??? 5. Profit!
When I bought this dock, it was only advertised to work with the S3, S4, and Note 2. Hopefully the Note 3 uses the same 11 pin USB port that the S3, S4, and Note 2 use, but if it doesn't that would explain why the dock doesn't work.
Also, if your HDMI cable requires source power (mine does) make sure to plug in the sourcing end into the TV. I can't think of anything past that.

I think they are talking about AOSP roms. AOSP roms do not support hdmi out.... You would have to use a touch wiz rom.
Amazon wont deliver to Ireland. I have tried others but no luck. Anybody now where I can buy this.
I search how i can change hdmi resolution output.
Is it possible?
Native is 720p?
I buy a similar dock, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F6YRDBO/ref=cm_sw_r_an_am_ap_am_us?ie=UTF8
But didn't work on touchwizz rom :/ I search always why.
Thanks
I have a few of those. The dock makes a click sound when USB power is connected; it sort of sounds like a relay switch. I will take one apart tomorrow to see what it is.
I just found the dock referenced in the OP, from the buyer listed. I was interested in this one because many of the knockoff docks don't support the use of MHL and USB OTG at the same time. The link is:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Smart-Dock-...S_Cell_Phone_PDA_Chargers&hash=item3f28ef0d86
I won't be buying it. Other than the fact that the seller won't ship outside of the US, the price is now $93.99, a far cry from the $24 that the OP stated! That's as much as a genuine Samsung dock....
I bought mine for $21 from China.

The inside is very interesting. There really is a relay switch inside the dock.

Deal Extreme apparently delivers "worldwide" (what they said, not me). Their version looks the same except for the glossy finish - mine has a matte finish. Here's the link:

Mine outputs 1080p resolution by default. I never saw a setting to change from 1080/720 on my 4.1.2 or 4.3 ROMs for my AT&T Note 2 i317. I don't think I can help you there.

Awesome, thanks for the teardown and pics! That's interesting, all right. Sad thing is, I spent more on trying to make my own multimedia dock (~$40) before I found this dock for $20. haha.

Why would it matter if it's a contract phone? I have T-Mobile. Is there any reason why it shouldn't work on my phone? Has anyone used this with a phone from the USA?
Corsair has announced at CES 2014 the availability for this month for the new Flash Voyager Go, though no word on a specific release date.
What is Flash Voyager Go ?
It is a pen drive OTG that has, on one side, the ability to plug into MicroUSB 2.0 ports on Android OTG-compatible phones and tablets.
On the other side it has the ability to plug into full-sized USB 3.0 making it useful for both phone and laptop or desktop.
Here is the official link: http://www.corsair.com/it/voyager-go?___store=it&___from_store=de
The price is set to 19.99$ for 16GB , 29,99$ for 32GB and 49,99 for 64GB.
Also the Flash Voyager Go shouldn't have problem working with KitKat !
Amazing! But i will choose the Sony model because is more slim.
Damn it's big... what's their excuse?

Do you mean this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-USM-SA...14?pt=US_USB_Flash_Drives&hash=item19e7038412 ?
It isn't so cheap like the Corsair. It coast a bit more probably because it is slimmer than the Flash Voyager.
About the quality of Corsair no doubt and in fact the Corsair Flash Voyager Go is an USB 3.0 pen drive instead the Sony it is only USB 2.0
If I will have to choice , I will choice Corsair because at less cost (19.99$) it offer USB 3.0 ! If you choose Sony only because is more slim I think you are throwing away your money.

Still meenova is the undefeated champion of OTG's... in price, size and etc
(( OT Quality of corsair... had their prime flash product ages ago as it was "in" and incredibly expensive. 3 hours till I returned it and found many had problems with it... bought a PQI instead and it lasted years and my sis still uses it, would not count much on quality as much on progress go meenova , also did I say this is huge?))

@PAGOT: Are you saying that meenova is better than Corsair ? It's hard to accept this for me that I have a lot of Corsair products at my home and everyone is fantastic and I have no problem with them.

With an OTG I want that it's small, versatile, compatible, looks nice. I really do not need the USB 3, but what I do need is that something so huge is not sticking out of the phone.
As the phone has only USB 2 it makes no difference if there is USB 3 on the other side ...
If I am gonna listen to music, play games, watch movies or backup. Speed on the phone will be the same so you would be actually throwing out money if you wanna buy it cuz of the USB 3 ...

you do not have to accept it . But its solid, its small and they have this one product they do really well...
Corsair as a brand is a brand that makes more products, till they are out and tested you never know what you will get. When you test this OTG write us back how it is.
But as most ppl will tell you. Its huge ... and phone becomes nearly unusable ... because of it

You are wrong because I don't care if the phone has USB 2.0 or USB 3.0, I am not discussing about micro usb but usb.
And as you know USB 3.0 is faster than USB 2.0 so it's better to transfer a huge file from your PC to your pen drive.
In 2014 why should we still use USB 2.0 which is very slow ? I don't have any idea.
Speed on the phone is the same and you are right but as I said with USB 3.0 you can transfer a huge file more quickly from your PC to your pen drive !
However I agree with you about the size of Flash Voyager Go. I read very carefully the specifications and yes it can make the phone unusable.
At this point remain only Meenova and Sony. Meenova it is a bargain without doubt !
Do you know if Meenova can read this type of microsd class 10: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Micro...8&qid=1389701386&sr=8-1&keywords=microsd+32gb ?
Thank you very much for your posts that helped me to better understand the "world" of otg pen drive !

Anyway it's bad one ... stay away from it if you have another option... it's actually one of the slowest SanDisks out there... despite being "ultra"
read some reviews on it, still decided to buy it cuz of the price/size and being an SanDisk brand.
But it's really not so fast that would clasify as "ultra" more like a Class 10 and that's about it. Having a normal SD 32GB Extreme from Sandisk and Ultra as well, hoped the micro will own to it's name, but it didn't as much as I hoped.
To your USB 3. You still don't know how much it will deliver.. there are USB 3 drives out there, SLOWER as some USB 2 .
Having the port doesn't mean it will be fast. But yeah... USB 2 is slower as my network ....and I see myself downloading stuffs rather then to copy between PC's....
Thank you PAGO it is awesome !!
I will buy Meenova for sure !
Don't know if you bought it, but i have, and it does not work on G2 with stock 4.4.2 Android ... so waste of money....

Well I've been tinkering with my 5th gen IPod. Had it turned to an iMod which bypasses much of the logic board and solders a wire directly from the DAC to the line out dock. From there I run the signal into a Leckerton UHA 6S.MKII amp. My LOD is a solid Mundorf silver. Neither the amp or ipod have DC blocking capacitors so it gives it a very neutral sound.
For my IEMs I'm using Westone W40 IEMs. Quad armature IEMs.
I was using a 128gb SD card as the hard drive, but decided to upgrade a bit. So I put in a 1TB msata drive, Samsung EVO.
Now to start adding tons more FLAC files.

Sound quality is good?
I use NZW-ZX1 along side with my 1st Ipod...
Thanks. Yea sound quality is amazing. Wolfson DAC, by passed logic board. It's a very pure signal. I'm definitely addicted to it. I bought the iPod new in 2007 and have used it probably an average of 3-4 days a week since. Been on 3 deployments with me.

Nice man! Thanks! That's pretty awesome. Yea I had a lot of guidance and most of the testing was done by members over at Head-Fi. I had the iMod portion done by Red Wine Audio. I don't have the workspace or soldering skill for such modding. At least not yet. The nice thing about the mod is that it improves sound quality, but doesn't affect the headphone output of the iPod itself. So if you are satisfied with the sound quality from the iPod, you could walk around with 1TB of music in just the size of an iPod classic. It's really quite crazy to see how far the modding and how far music has come in the last 10 years or so.
Alas though, everything I learned about building a Terapod, came from cmarti, dr408517, and Dminor over at headfi, who were the real pioneers. Huge kudos to Tarken who designed an amazing msata adaptor as well.
Here is a link where we discussed it for anyone how wants to upgrade their iPod.
Link: Head-Fi SSD iPod thread.
I'm no audio person by any means, but reading headfi finally got me into buying a nice set of IEMs, OEMs and DAC/amp. Dude the sound is great. I'm hard hearing, so its great to finally be able to listen to music and enjoy it again.

No kidding. Its true what they say..."Welcome to Headfi, sorry about your wallet"
Since starting on headfi I've bought a nice set of headphones, a nice set of IEMs and sunk more money into my iPod setup than I care to admit. Heck I could have bought an Astell&Kern AK240. But then I wouldn't have 1TB of FLAC in my pocket

It actually does fit in my pocket. However I mostly use it at home when relaxing or when I'm working. However, you can go slim it down by removing the amp. That's just for volume control and some of my higher impedance headphones. If I wanted I could plug the IEMs directly into the iPod itself. So really the 1TB iPod is no bigger than any other iPod. In fact, you can upgrade a 7th Gen iPod with a slim back plate and have a normal thin 1TB iPod.
I only use the line out, and amp for better sound quality. :good:

I must admit, I despise Apple with a passion but still.... that's pretty damn impressive:highfive:
i think the Ipod touch should need a 1tb flash memory just because the classics are gone but Ebay somehow has a 1tb Ipod classic custom apple need to make it official they are the original brand in there own Revoulution's peek so means by if necessary make all Ipod touch and Iphone in it's own special way and version software i mean think about it they focus on Iphone's and Imac's watch's ect so much we hardly get any recognition with the Ipod touch what is to come of today's world of storage for apple in 2017 as Airpods huge delay finally over and available in stores this coming Monday limited stock Airpods true wireless will be hard to find available in stock as far as apple store and other apple retailers this has been a huge year for apple in the world of today's wireless technology with Christmas coming up and with the Iphone 8 with wireless charging coming up in 2017 speculation's with high volume electronics production and products chants stakes can not be more higher and what better way can we start developing could we see some more movement with the Ipod touch.
Dope as fukc. How big is your library? lmao
Damn! This thing bounced back up lol. To be honest my library is only about 180GB- for now. But that's just music, no videos. But it's growing. I now import all music in Lossless formats.
I actually switched the 1TB msata drive to a 256GB SD card. This helps to conserve battery power. Plus the 1TB msata proved less reliable and susceptible to corruption, and other issues.
The gentleman that created the msata adapter subsequently came out with the iFlash Quad.
https://www.iflash.xyz/store/iflash-quad/
This adaptor allows you to switch out the iPod HDD for an adapter that can accommodate up to FOUR micro SD cards at once. The micro SD cards are run in a RAID format. The neat thing is the micro SD cards DO NOT have to be the same size. SO you can just grab what you have laying around.
He also had an adapter that can accommodate dual SD cards, which can be purchased in a 512GB capacity each for a full TB
So many options. Plus you throw in a big ass battery and your set.
If you have an iPod Classic laying around and want to make it one of a kind or breath new life into it, I highly recommend checking out the adapters on the page I linked. The prices are decent as well. So get rid of those ****ty mechanical HDDs. And go with flash media!
