Hi all,
I recently broke my dell streak, and looking for a new phone now...
I can't make my mind betwenn optimus 2x, atrix 4g and nexus s, thought will get your input on this.
I am ok with rooting and loading custom rom... may be not changing the screen of the mobile that's how I broke the streak
I am hoping all three phones I am looking at will have decent performance. I am looknig for a mobile with a decent video recording capablity and decent battery life. I read some of the threads here and looks like some of the members are unhappy about their camera.
What you think about LG optimus 2x camera? do u think its better than Atrix 4g ones? I guess Nexus is totally out of picture...
What would be your choice?
Thanks in advance for your help
O2X hands down.
CM7+latest kangs and you are flying!
I had the same deal, and i finally get the o2x and it rocks!!! Even in Stock is awesome!
I am with oleg1981, the 2X fly and have great developers.
Get de Atrix de o2x has inferior build quality and if it wasn't for developers constantly working hard at tweaking here and there it wudve been a really sad phone but whatever yu decide yu will enjoy it because of the great support from developers

Hi all,
Thanks so much your input. Just wondering if you have any comments regarding tht camera quality? I read some threads where they were complaing about the quality of the camera your thoughts on that will be really helpful.
Cheers
The camera is great

The camera is great if you are running a ROM based on the stock LG software. It's not that great when running on CM7 due to loss of frames when recording video in low light.

Hello!
Camera is ok if you use it in good light conditions and in short distance with the flash. It isn't very good when used in dimmed/low light or twilight.
BTW: CM7 camera is ok now. As now almost everything is working well on Cyanogenmod 7 with custom kernel (even all sensors) - but only the FM radio - that is working much better with stock based custom roms.
I can't say much in comparison to the cameras of the Atrix or the Nexus S.
The camera of the Samsung Galaxy S2 is definitely much better though.
But there are test about that (concerning camera quality) available on the internet - as a German yoke says ask the nice Indian (internet with Saxon dialect tongue = "Inder nett" )
The Atrix by the way sounds very good on paper (more RAM, faster CPU) and should be a really decent phone too - but it is a little bigger - IMHO the LG O2x has the right size - didn't want a bigger phone with more than 4".
True the camera is better than it was before (brightness has improved). I still miss the full frame recording of the stock rom.

Hi all,
Thanks very much for your replies. Its been really helpful. I am going to pick one up this weekend...
You should choose between Atrix and 2x, Nexus S is single core...the past now.
My advice is 2x.

Affordable piece of great hardware ... I am really very happy with it, although big parts of this is based on the work of developers here on XDA.
As former Motorola user let's add one thing: NO LOCKED BOOTLOADER!!

ohhh, really?
At the time I bought mine it cost about half the price of similar performing phones.
I like that.
Also, some excellent mod roms (Temasek, Django, Gueste) so the crappy LG software implementation doesn't matter (although the latest official roms might be OK (?) but they were NOT when I bought the phone, lol).
And some excellent kernels too.
I liked the hardware.
The solid feel of the phone, not to mention the IPS screen which I found much better than the SGS2's AMOLED display at the time of buying (about a year ago). Price was good too.
It's size is also a winner in my books, I wouldn't really want to go any bigger height wise.. so I'm not sure what my next upgrade is going to be considering the trend in modern android phones is BIGGER IS BETTER

looooooool. if i had a note i think id sell it right away and buy a 4x or a one-x XD
What I like:
The speed of the phone, all possibilities of kernels and roms meaning that we have first class devs working on it hard to share the best of them selves and of course the design are amazing compared to other devices
Now, what i don't like are the memory, even my defy MB525 has better ram memory and the fact LG are to slow releasing stock ics
All and all I love this phone, I also bought a new one after breaking the glass after a massive fall
Mostly thanks to Spica and Carburanos work in addition to hei125, owain, Flix, and all the rest i don't remember while while writing and driving my car

What i like about my LG Optimus 2x is the built quality.Had at least 3 to 4 falls & slips from hand, still my O2x is functional and bear only a scratch on bottom.Loved the IPS display.Picture and vids look so true to eye.Was bit disappointed with it's single mono speaker as was in an illusion that O2x had stereo speakers.
Audio quality was so low but thanks to O2x Developers and xda this problem is thing of past.HDMI was another feature which attracted me as now i could share all my precious moments with friends and family. When bought LG Optimus 2x it was the only Dual Core smartphone in the market and later on other smart phones featured
the same but still far more expensive than O2x.LG support for O2x from FROYO 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3.4 was sh***y but the developer community whether CyanogenMod or XDA community had made this device a success for us.
Would like to thank spica, carburano,SuperSkill, flix, temasek,Stefan Gündhör,Topogigi,paulobrien,erestor6,Hell_97 and all those developers who had made O2x not only suitable for daily use but revolutionized it much further.Cheers to all of them. This developers community also made me like my O2x verrrrrry much.So luck to have them all developing for our O2x which has been abandoned by LG.
HDMI
What I most like is the HDMI output. It´s REALLY usefull when you don't have a media player, on a friend's house or at your own place.
Almost everyday I watch movies via MXPlayer or Netflix.
Ps.: Now I'm waiting for a ICS Custom ROM with Video Decoding/Encoding working to get it even better.
previously i had HTC hd2...really rocking phone...with android....stilll now it rules in single core..coming to dual core for more performance.....LG 2x......really awesome with almost all feature.....made to work by XDA developers..............thanks all...!!!.............is thr any way to include WIFI direct in LG 2x.......i tink tats missing in our droid....

and the build quality is amazing. We have also the best devs
BEST part is that it is cheaper(for the kinda hardware it has)
Now, lets just forget the fact that this is a flagship Nexus device for Google, who have top engineers and programers working day and night on the Nexus 7. Some how they deliberately left out a camera app. Now I won't even go into the quality because at 1.3 Megapixels its good enough for Skype. And thats it. Myself like the rest of you had to download, the Top rated camera App from the Google Play store from MoDaCo, just type Nexus 7 into Google Play its the 4 result down. The App is a disaster, For a Tegra 3 based device, its does not even give you $199 iPod Touch Facetime results. Ok maybe thats not a fair comparison. But it draws me into me second point, the fact that Google deliberately said NO Camera App for you. Its unlikely they are even going to develop a decent camera App. Which has huge underpinnings. Unlike any other device, most of my friends and co-workers have a Nexus 7 already. We would like to have some type of real Camera App that works at something higher than 10 frames per second. Google is unlikley to give us any kind of Facetime Like App for the Nexus 7 which is disasterous failure. When a single core CPU iPod Touch is delivering a better experience (camera wise and App wise) to the end user. I know leave it up to the Developers ! developers are the answer like Fring which is also super choppy . Really you sound like Steve Ballmer at this point. How hard would have been for Google to add in a Camera App running smoothly with tons of Fun, Effects and Layers that you could essentially Facetime Videochat with friends. The fact that Google is against this makes me think they have already given up on the Nexus 7. Because any 3rd party App is not going to be universally adopted, like A Camera App baked into the device out of the box. Would the Nexus 7 been an even bigger success, its hard to ridicule a success however it is something the Nexus 7 needs. Not 3rd party poorly done camera Apps that look choppy and running on a single core CPU which is struggling to keep up. I know Google Talk is there but everyone I have shown are like WTF! Why name a Video Chat feature as "TALK" most did not know it was even there or an option. It does not even work on the Nexus 7 at least for Video Chat purposes. Does anyone know if Google has hinted or said they will developing a Camera App for the Nexus 7 and a fix for Google Talk ?
rant over its frustrating
The way i see it, there really isnt a need for a camera app. its a front facing low mp camera, so your not going to take pictures of your vacation or go sightseeing with it... you have your phone or actual camera for that.. beside how will you hold the tablet when trying to take a picture with out yourself in the shot? hold it backwards? now you just look silly and your picture still looks like crap.
then you might say "What about taking pictures of my self?" well instagram, facebook, and i think google+ (not really sure about G+, just assumeing so) have a camera app built in that works well with the N7 camera.
sooo not sure what your looking for :silly:

Face time is apple.
Google+ hangouts is Google.
Sorry you didn't know. Its hard to be mad at Google for your lack of knowledge.
A camera app with weird facial features? Cool? For 5 mins. I tried it on my iPad once. Literally. Then got annoyed when everyone was uploading pics to fb of their fat/stretched/skinny/alien faces.
Again, this isn't apple. I'm sure an app will pop up eventually, some day

This tablet is all about promoting Google's content and services. It's very well built and pretty much given away. Most people don't find a high quality camera necessary in a tablet, so this has no rear camera.
It came with no camera app, because the front camera really isn't intended for photography. It's there so you can take advantage of Google Hangouts, which I assume the quality should be good enough for that (haven't tried myself).
My only complaint about the camera is that it really should be angled down slightly. You have to hold the tablet very awkwardly to get the camera to center on your face.
Quite honestly, I really don't think of the front camera. The camera quality and speed shouldn't really be a con, what were you expecting for $200? It has a Tegra 3 and a IPS Display, which cost over $100 alone.
Learn something new everyday, a tegra 3 is camera hardware. Also the commercial s shoeing face time are no where near the quality in real life

Wow you are horribly misinformed.
Firstly, the words "flagship" and "Nexus" don't correlate to meaning the same thing. This way of thinking represents a terrible misinterpretation of what the Nexus program actually is.
Secondly, you have to realize that the Nexus 7 tablet is aimed squarely at the cheaper end of the tablet market. Google set out to introduce a 200 dollar quad-core tablet, and they succeeded. To do this, cuts in other areas needed to be made. One of these areas is the cheaper sensor in the front-facing camera, and the lack of a rear camera. Now, I myself feel that the front camera is perfectly acceptable for video chatting in G+ hangouts (its intended feature, and the one feature of the camera that is touted prominently in the features list). If you wanted a tablet that could take amazing pictures of yourself or other things, you bought the wrong tablet.
And by the way, just for sake of clarity...Google did not strip the camera apk from the Nexus 7. They simply did not give you a shortcut for it. This is all MoDaCo's app in the Play Store does...unlocks the shortcut for the camera software and places it into your app tray. That's it.
At the end of the day, this is a 200 dollar tablet.
Wow! :banghead:

I have a handful of tablets, including an iPad1 and iPad2. I can honestly say that I probably never had the need to take a picture with any of them. Cell phones have higher quality cameras and are much more portable/accessible. The FFC on the Nexus 7 is intended to be used specifically for video chatting which you can use either Google+ or Google Talk. A camera app wasn't included because any video chat service you use is all you need.
The reference to Google Talk is a stupid video chat service name, well, you have to imagine that Google Talk was around LONG before video service. Video conferencing wasn't originally its main function (and still isn't). It is a chat service app that simply support video.
Video Chatting is great but not useful on a day to day basis. The back camera is a useless tool for a tablet.
I guess this is dumb, but I see nothing called "google talk" on mine. So it's better to tell them to look for "talk"

Stop with the whole camera drama in this forum already. Most consumers don't need one since they have point and shoots or a smartphone. It's a non-issue that everyone should put to rest. And this thread is also a troll thread as well since he keeps mentioning face time which is an Apple product.

I appreciate all the response, I wanted to be clear on somethings which many focused on, I am not complaining about the camera Megapixel quality itself. Or what do I expect from a $200 tablet. Its the fact that, Google does not want the majority of people video chatting. When the devices is perfectly capable of this more so than a simple iPod Touch. Facetime has become, a verb now, and Android needs a response. Why Google is deliberately blowing an opportunity, is not by mistake. On Campus at work everywhere, almost overnight I see as many Nexus 7's as iPad's. Not many people want to risk a $600 iPad but a $200 tablet is a take everywhere thing. Even places not in class where you dont need an iPad the Nexus 7 is there. But Google does not want you to embrace Facetime like Apple has given people the opportunity to. Probably why the video chat feature is hidden away in a program called TALK. Anyways in response to MMcCraryNJ who says MoDaCo just links to the Camera apk, its not stripped this is even worse. I thought the camera was just a poorly developed 3rd party Ap. And lets not even care about the Visual quality, Have the CPU and GPU help out theres no reason. Its should run so choppy. And if they don't want people using which is why they left out the Icon for a $200 tablet why include one ? If the sensor is so bad, no matter what its gonna deliver what feels like 10 frames a second choppyness. I can't post links yet but just add whats missing to the begining, the Nexus 7 would be a perfect Mom and Pop device for FaceTime (I know FaceTIme is Apple but Android needs a catchier name) or for GrandDads or Grandmas who are not ready for a Smartphone or want to spend $500 on an iPAd. Its the perfect demographic, and yet Google does not want you doing this especially on a perfect devices for it. And it would not cost them extra or 5 cents more per sensor, its software thats not working right, and that they don't want to make user friendly.

I can just imagine similar Nexus 7 adds would be a hit.
8 posts.
I have to say that after battery life (I knew from the moment the specs leaked, that 2300 mah wouldn't be enough) that the camera quality has been my biggest dissapointment, the phone has a HARD time focusing, the picture quality it's mediocre/sometimes decent and it really doesn't make sense since google is making a big deal out of the camera.
Check out the tag line for the nexus 5 on the play store: "Nexus 5 helps you capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways. It's the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made, powered by Android 4.4, KitKat."
If you go the official nexus 5 website you will find lots of info about how good the camera is : http://www.google.com/nexus/5/
or the commercial ... it's all about the camera
Anyway, according to Joshua Topolsky, The Verge's Chief Editor, there's hope and we will get an update trying to fix what's broken, do you guys think it will really make a difference? Or is this camera simply a poor camera? Here's the quote:
"Representatives from the Android team say that software is to blame for the weak performance, not hardware, and reps tell me that a fix is coming to deal with the issues in the upcoming weeks. I've even seen an early build of the new software, and while it's only a minor improvement — autofocus is a hair faster, but still inconsistent, and picture quality hasn't changed — it's nice to see Google already at work.
Of course, there's no set date for a fix at this point, and I don't know how much the camera can actually be improved through software, but if the Moto X is any kind of example, there might just be a solution to this very disheartening problem."

That's just not true, and you are very biased, it seems. Like others have said, there is significant lag in the camera focus and my Nexus 5 can take much much better photos than my Nexus S, but not any faster. And that is not okay.
I get the impression that all the effort on the software side so far has gone into HDR+
My experience playing around with it is that HDR+ not only improves detail in bright/dark areas, but it also results in sharper images overall. (This is contrary to what I have found with other HDR implementations which have resulted in blurrier images). Of course sometimes you don't want to use HDR (Maybe you want to photograph a figure silhouetted against the sunset for example).
Whilst I didn't buy the N5 as a replacement for an SLR, hopefully the non-HDR mode can be improved. After all, the best camera is the one you have with you.
(I also agree regarding the camera focus. At the very least, an option to pre-focus would make a huge difference!)
Shutter is slow... but it takes decent shots
It's no secret that Google needs to work on their camera software.

The same here, very surprised by picture quality in low light using HDR+ (for landscape mainly)... I mean im sure there are better cameras but for a phone im impressed
But i've a weird problem don't know if software or hardware but the camera app stay black screen when opened from the lock screen. it happened many times, i had to put my pin code kill the app and launch again to get the camera app working again.

haha, I am about as unbiased as they come. I have all apple everything including an iPhone 5, macbook pro, apple tv's, Droid Maxx and now Nexus 5. I have no brand loyalty at all. Let me make myself clear to you, I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH THE CAMERA OR THE QUALITY OF THE IMAGES THAT COME FROM IT.

Since you have those items, why don't you compare the camera shutter lag to those other phones?
You can always say that for you it's not a problem - and that might very well be as you say, but you'll never be able to deny that there might be people that want to capture "that moment" and with that lag it's just infeasible.
If your camera does not have any worse lag than say the iPhone 5s, please make a video so we can see for ourselves.

Since you have those items, why don't you compare the camera shutter lag to those other phones?
You can always say that for you it's not a problem - and that might very well be as you say, but you'll never be able to deny that there might be people that want to capture "that moment" and with that lag it's just infeasible.

I have no problem capturing the moment, but I am also a photographer as well so I have learned to anticipate.
Again, I don't need to make video's or prove to you, I have said FOR ME, I have ZERO issues with the camera. It is fine by me.
Definitely needs to be fixed.

The shutter lag is insane for a phone with these specs. I used Camera FX and it's much better, but all the images come out very dark.

Look this thread is about issues with the Nexus 5's camera. What good are you doing when you tell people "It's not that bad guys! You just have to anticipate the 1-2 seconds lag, I learned it too!"
It's just ignorant to tell people there is no issue with the camera at all, because you yourself can work around the lag issue. You do see that this might annoy people, especially normal users?
Hello,
Does anybody here know or at least suggest me, what should I keep (I already own the iPhone 5 but I can't use it when my parents are not at home) or should I go and buy XSP (there's a discount for this device otherwise I would need to consider about S3 Mini or Xperia M) which I could use at anytime I want? Thanks to everyone who answers!
XSP is heads and shoulders better than XM or S3. And since S3 Mini is a cut-down version of S3, both in size *and* specs, IMHO there is no reason to prefer the alternatives.
You do have to remember that moving to Android means leaving the Apple ecosystem behind. You'll have to repurchase apps, and there might be some games that are not available on Android.

I know but I mean the key features like multitasking, camera, headphone that comes with the phone and so on. I know that some games on iOS aren't on Android (like Infinity Blade 2) but that doesn't matter me much, the only game I play on the phone is Clash of Clans and sometime (rlly rarely) I play Asphalt 8 (which I have purchsed for both Android and iOS, no worry for piracy) so.. I just care for the key features like the rear and the front camera. Both of the phones have 8MP camera rear camera but the exposure is different, is that a big difference between the quality? And like the screen, as I know the iPhone 5 comes with an Retina HD display and XSP with TFT HD display but with BE2/X-Reality so I don't which is better
Pretty much everything is better on the iPhone 5. It has better multitask, camera, comes with better headphones, has better hardware performances. As an XSP user, I can't think of a feature were the XSP is better than the iPhone 5, there might be some, but the iPhone is mostly better.

But as I know, Android was made for multitaking and for hardware, the XSP haves better processor and the camera is same or am I wrong?
If you want something that just works then the iPhone 5 is better.
If you want something you can play around with ROMs and have more control over the phone then the Xperia SP is better.
My preference is Xperia SP, I dont mind the iPhone as a device but its restrictions annoy me.

Android is made for multitasking, however, due to how newer apps are build, devices require more than 1GB to run smoothly. Sadly, the SP just has 1GB of RAM, which makes it slow at times. The processor is good, but the one on the iPhone 5 is the same, if not better. And no, the camera, while 8mpx, works better on the iPhone.

The iPhone Camera is WAY better man.
The SP is awesome but as someone above stated,if you want something that works, the iPhone is better!
Good luck!

Ok but the iPhone still have only 1Gig RAM... Even some newer devices, even iPhone 5s didn't came with 2Gig RAM and for the headphones, both phone and headphone are using 3,5mm jack so... I can only think of the S5 and Z2(...?) to have 2Gig RAM so...

Can You post me some comparison pictures taken w/ the iPhone and the XSP? It would be really helpful.
Ok guys, looks like I'm more undecided now, can some1 do a +/- features for both phones (like comparing them). It would be great! Thanks! :highfive:
Edit1 : It would be even better, if any1 could suggest me a phone which I can play with the /system and do a normal work/sometime playing Clash Of Clans and Asphalt 8 and for music listening at the same time. I thought that the XSP can do it but it looks like it can't
Xperia SP:
+Design
+Loud speaker
+Bigger Screen
+Unique ilumination bar
+Runs a more "open" OS, Android (and outdated one)
-Camera
-Low RAM
-Materials used feels cheap at times
-Bad screen quality
Iphone 5:
+Design
+More apps
+More updates in the future (it will at least get two more mayor iOS updates)
+Premium build quality
+Better cameraS with slow-mo video (I'm not sure if it's the 5 and 5s or just the 5s)
+Better screen quality
+Better multitasking (iOS is more optimized for multitasking nowadays in my opinion, as iPhone 5 almost never lags).
-No unique feautres
-Speaker quality is okay.
+/- iOS is not as open as Android, but it's a beatiful design nevertheless.
This is what I can think of.

I can't post comparison pictures right now but there have been a lot of complaints about the XSP camera.
Some users are also experiencing some issues like blurring and extremely poor low light pictures.
If you need a good camera, dont get the XSP.
I don't think these issues are only with my device.
The phone is amazing in other aspects like hardware but if the camera is important, take a comparison from someone else has both the phones!
I'm sorry I can't put up pictures because I'm waiting at the airport
Good luck!
The camera on the SP is REALLY bad, the lenses even get scratched super easily, that's why people get blurry/overexposed pictures. If it's your priority, the more reasons to go for iPhone.

This phone can perfectly do that! Asphalt 8 runs fine with 0 lag on ultra settings and you should be able to play music when playing either of these games

And I know one thing about the i5: the WiFi sucks! My dad is always complaining about how he doesn't find any networks while I can find like 10 with my sp or that he can't connect to certain wireless network while I can

The SP had some WiFi reception problems (range) but the latest update has fixed it.
WiFi reception is perfect now!
