Verizon Upgrade Loophole - Off-topic

I recently talked to a Verizon Level 2 agent (before they changed data plans) in regards to the upcoming data plan change. I have 5 lines, all have unlimited data plans. This agent claims I can use an upgrade and still keep my Unlimited data. One of the other lines is eligible for an upgrade, he says that if I order a phone on the line eligible (not my line) through the customer service over the phone, I can then activate it myself on my line (without ever activating on the original line I ordered from). He says the line I ordered it on never gets changed because when you order over the phone the data isnt changed until the phone has been activated and my line (the line with the new phone) isnt altered because its considered an ESN change rather than an upgrade.
Anyone know anything else about this possible loophole?

Since this is about carrier and not device issues, moved to Off-Topic.

HTC Kaiser - what unlimited data plan can I use?

Howdy,
I currently have a Cingular 8125 and for the last year I've been using an unlimited data plan for $19.95. I think this data plan is only for cell phones (not PDA phones) and I honestly can't remember how I managed to pull this off. I think my last phone was a cell phone and they just transfered the plan over.
Problem is that when I buy the AT&T Tilt, I'm assuming they'll only offer me the unlimited PDA data plan, which is much more expensive.
So here's the question - any reason why I can't just pop out my existing SIM card and move it over? Do I need a new SIM card for the 3G functionality? Any way to move over my existing data plan?
I remember purchasing the Cingular 8125 a long time ago w/ a medianet plan I believe $19.99. The representative didn't mention anything about unlimited PDA data plan. So if you still have the $19.99 media plan, you should be fine with it if using the Tilt. I guess it all comes down to how much you use their data...
If your existing sim card is 3g capable stating that you got it last year, I'm guessing toward the end of the year, then you should be fine. If not, you will need to obtain a new 3g sim card from ATT...
hope this helps you...
at last a question i can answer lol.
There are a few ways to go about this
1. buy the kaiser/tilt/8925 outright pop in your sim ATT wont change a thing as they dont track the phone u are using for the most part
2. you can try to do a upgrade to get it cheaper the only problem with this is if you run into someone who is doing there job and checking to make sure you have the correct stuff for your plan. if you go about this route when you go into do a upgrade just tell them you want to upgrade your phone sign a new contract but you dont want anything changed on your plan. most times this will work.
other then that thats about it. Only other thing is you do need a 3g sim if yours is not already it will say right on it if its 3g or not. At a ATT store they norm give them away with upgrades as well as at places like radioshack. ATT sometimes will give you a new free sim if you say yours is lost or not working other places like RS just charge you 25 as thats what ATT charges them for them.

Cool - just checked my SIM card and it says '3G' on the back. I was going to upgrade to the Tilt via my corporate Web site, but that will force me to set up a whole new plan w/ the unlimited PDA package. Instead I'll try calling AT&T and doing the upgrade over the phone. I'll post back here to let you know if it worked.
Thanks for the info!
You can change it at any time....
On the AT&T account maintenance website, you can change your data plan to the Unlimited MEdiaNet for $19.95 if they make you sign up for a PDA plan when you get your Tilt. I did it last week.

Which site is that - just the main AT&T wireless site where you view your account details? And it lets you change to MediaNet, even if you have a PDA? Nice....
I am a customer with Rogers of Canada ...
got a free/unactivated SIM card ( came with my S621 ) ... I kept on using my old card from way back.
This new free card that came with the S621...it doesn't say "3G" on it ... just the Rogers symbol and 5 lines of 4 digits codes on the left side ...
when flip over to other side ( the gold contact side ) ... it said " HSDPA" ... what does that equivalent to ??
Found the answer to my "HSDPA" question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSDPA
~~~
I have a question ...
I've been using the old card for the last few years .. this card does not have the HSPDA/3G imprinted on it ... but if I want to switch and let's say I told them my old card is damaged and wanted to use this new highspeed capable card ... will there be activation charges ??
other then what's labeled ... both card look exactly the same on the gold side
I tried that, got a confirmation email, but the service never activated.
When I called AT&T they said that that service was not available for me because I had a PDA phone and I shouldn't have been able to select it, much less get a confirmation email.
Tried it again two weeks later and the same thing happened.
Free Internet After Service Deactivated?
Hey, I have a of course "hacked" g1. I was living in another state that had T-Mobile service and recently moved to an area completely gray on their service map, and had my service disconnected. My phone can still roam off at&t towers, funny thing is, with service deactivated I can still access the internet, chat on IM programs, check my gmail. Is this a common occurence?
I just find it odd that I can do all of these things without a paid service.
Im on FlexPay and I didnt pay last months bill because I didnt have any money from my job....and still havent paid this month....and well I still have internet access via Edge and 3G.
So at least I know I'm not the only one. Rather interesting to say the least. Anyone know why this might be happening?
I don't know about T-Mobile, but I did a few years with Nextel (pre Sprint). I think the billing systems are similar though (It's provided to the carrier as a package from a software provider). Anyway..
The billing system is completely separate from the systems that your phone actually talks to. Changes are made in the billing system (such as cancellation, suspension of service). A message is sent over to the other systems, and you get a response back - Complete, Pending, Error .. etc. An error would supposedly get flagged for technicians to handle, but not always.. We sometimes would have customers calling in after weeks to find out why something hadn't been added or removed, and it would be because of an old error in the provisioning. Very possible that something similar has happened to you guys. May last months, may go away in 5 more min.. No way to tell.
Wow, that wound up longer than I expected. Sorry.
Data plan question on tilt 2
Just a simple question, does this phone require having a data plan if I buy it off eBay?
No, not if you don't call AT&T and tell them that you have a new smartphone. Caveat - if you do eventually want a data plan, you will have to give them your IMEI number before you can sign up for one. At that point, they'll know, and the data plan will become mandatory. How do I know this? I finally got a $15 data plan for my tilt, and had to contact them to activate it, as the online system wouldn't activate it.
The first text I got back was a love letter stating that if I "omitted" adding a data plan, one would be added for me. How sweet of them...
New AT&T Note user...what to do before putting SIM in for first time?
Well, I sold my Glalaxy Nexus to finance a new Galaxy Note N7000. I have read many stories of AT&T being jerks about this phone (not tablet, BTW) classifying it as a tablet and forcing users to a tablet only (non-voice) plan. Mine gets here this Monday and I paid dearly for it, so I want to ensure I set it up properly to avoid the unethical pressure AT&T will place on me if I set it up out of the box without making any changes. Here are my questions:
Should I immediately root and delete the EFS folder (after backing up) so AT&T doesn't flag it as a tablet?
Should I set up APN settings and use as normal, hoping they don't spaz and flag as a tablet?
Should I just put my SIM in and go, praying I don't get illegally harassed for having a tablet (when it's simply a phone with a large screen)?
It seems AT&T has their head up their asses and execs are calling this phone a tablet, making them even more money-hungry. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan and use like 2 gigs a month. It's not like I got the Note with the intention of consolidating my entire gadget lineup and use it as a tablet, consuming terabytes of data. It just has a pen and large screen and well under the typical tablet size of 7". It's a large pocketable cellphone and I want to use it as such, just as I have with tons of other imported GSM phones.
So, what's the 100% reliable method to avoid the shady accusations AT&T will inevitably place on me if I just put my SIM in and use it with the expensive service I already have.
It really is a shame they are being assholes about this device.
Is "pray" a choice?
Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, what I was planning to do (I almost did this last night but I've chickened out) was:
1. Buy AT&T service with another device - I was looking at the captivate glide, as a backup device in case the Note gets stolen, dies, or AT&T renders it useless. I always "self-insure" with a backup phone on any carrier, and this way I get a 4G SIM card and bona-fide service for 30 days to try out.
2. Obtain the Note from Amazon, Newegg, etc., root the device, mv /efs to /efs_old or something like that. Reboot, whatever is needed for that to take effect. Also copy /efs_old somewhere else safe.
3. Set APN according to various posts here and at Amazon, etc.
4. Insert SIM, hope for the best.
That was my plan, anyway. I think doing that, the major risk is that the generic IMEI is flagged as bogus.
Thanks. So it sounds like it's still a craps shoot as to whether AT&T will tackle you accusing you of using a tablet.
Shame, really. Wish me luck.
I put my sim into the phone, changed my apn settings, and called att to confirm that no changes were made to my plan. Everything works fine getting HSDPA data connection.
How long have you been using it? I'd bet there is a threatening text is queued up for you to go out any time now...
I got my Note tuesday i changed the APN settings put in my sim, haven't heard a word out of AT&T on the phone I just looked at my account online and I still have my unlimited data, nothing has changed. I'll update if they contact me.
I don't see why AT&T should care, other than being a better device this is the same thing as the Dell Streak.
I called and told them what the phone was and they said ok and all was good untill the 14 days laster they shut my data off.
After 3 hours on the phone with them 6 reps/ managers they asked for my IMEI number then told me that it did not show up so they could not turn my data back on. Finally they just entered a fake IMEI number on my acount and turned my data back on. Will see how long that works.
But they clearly do care, and that's the problem.
Right after I got the phone, I rooted it and deleted some files from the efs folder (see my old post), entered 4g APNs, rebooted
No text. It's been 5 days tho.
I have 4g Unlimited grandfathered to my Infuse 4g.
If I am on a tiered plan with AT&T, do I still need to root or can I just install my sim and it will just work like it did on my iphone?
[Q] Plan questions (is this possible)
With Verizon, can I do as follows?
1) add a line to get a great deal on a phone
2) switch the phone number to a different phone
3) switch upgrade to new line
4) cancel the new line
5) not pay an early termination fee
Is this possible to do?
Anyone done this or in the know?
No.
You can, however, add a line to get a phone, then switch the new line over to a $10/mo basic phone.
On the 700 family plan you can only add 3 lines though, correct?
Not sure about the rest, but I don't think that would avoid an early termination fee.
