ICS shortcuts - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I don't know how to explain it but back on GB there were some shortcuts like touching the upper screen and moving left or right to change brightness but this seems to be gone on ICS?!
Are there any other things like this that have changed??

yeah it is gone on ICS
edit:
there is other things like display all animation menu, it is no longer there.
hidden gb pictures also replaced by uglier ics picture.
the easy copy paste feature also replaced by a strange hard to guess one
edit2:
This is more,
ICS is using more processor power,
ICS is using more ram,
ICS is using hardware acceleration,
ICS is slower in data read and update because of new sql file storage.

[ROM][22/07]- Wild Ginger – Gingerbread 2.3.4 AOSP – [DISCONTINUED]

This ROM is DISCONTINUED
I am sorry to say I don't find the time to further develop this ROM, if anyone wants to continue this ROM please do so. Just pm me and it's fine. Thanks for using this ROM and for your feedback. Maybe in the future I will begin a new ROM project. For now I am only developping a ROM Download Manager for the desktop, keep an eye on the portal .
Go check it out for screenshots and download :

i`ll give a chance this evening ... looks nice
I have been using this ROM for the last hour or so. I did a backup, clean wipe and fresh flash. I have let the new ROM settle and have done a manual reeboot also.
I am a humble end-user and not a dev but thought that I would give a breakdown of some of my first impressions and observations.
I like the boot annimation alot, I also like the lock screen. Both look clean.
I like the orange font used in the status bar and the pull down menu although the "Wild Ginger" wording in the drop down menu is very blury and looks ugly.
The window transistions are smooth as you like but don't feel snappy quick.
I think the new honeycomb launcher is a nice touch but doesn't seem as intuative as the regular launchers such as ADW; maybe it's because I'm not used to honeycomb yet.
My main gripe about the Honeycomb launcher is that it force closes ALL the time. I have been trying to remove the Google search bar widget that is pre-loaded on screen after first boot and it is impossible (and the widgets aren't even locked to desktop). Also I can't ADD any additional widgets - you can select a widget to add but nothing happens!
From the main screen, waiting for the menu to appear takes about 5seconds which is an age. The "Personalise Honeycomb" menu doesn't fit the whole screen and you can see thick band of the desktop down the right of the screen which is ugly.Once in the preferences menu it isn't at all clear what you are meant to do... You can see the "Apply Settings" button but it took me tapping about the rest of the screen to finally make the actual preferance choices appear.
I have tested inbound and outbound calls and wifi both work as standard. The music player has nice interface, camera works and stock browser is fine. I don't like the dark blue highlight that appears when you press on an app icon it looks clumsy.
The numbers 1,2 and 3 are almost cut in half in the dialer and the green phone "call" icon doesn't seem to fit in it's area neatly.
I like H4oxer's work on this ROM and I hope it continues to get better but with these quite apparent bugs I will respectfully wait for an update before I continue to use this ROM.
Good Work tho!
so ...
good review above .... absolutelly uselless to say more ... 100% same opinions as you EDD ! keep going h4oxer !!!
Thanks guys I really appreciate your feedback ! Will work on it!

tried to flash but no luck stuck at splash screen, did wipe, factory reset,dalvik...how long was first boot for you guys?
You'll have to wait 5-10 minutes... leave it for 10 minutes on first boot..
why I cant see any progres in progres bar in recovery, says instaling update ...
(now no progres of writing files) and afther just 10-15 sec instal complete,is this normal? usualy can see progres and takes a bit longer
Yes it's normal, I didn't payed attention at the progressbar while writing the updater file , but it works don't worry. It installs fast because it had not much apps on board. Just the essential.

Wierd. This ROM is working fine for me. Did you wipe /data and /cache?
yes did everything...dont know simple not booting, stucked on splash screen not even bootanimation
OK....first impressions are good. Startup in less than 4 minutes. Looking good. Everything is working out of the box, no force closing or similar problems. Nice themes, Market app is interesting
LCD density set to 115 and dialpad and everything else looks good
need to be done
- icons in status bar - phone signal at least
- trackpad wakeup
- sound on lock/unlock
- 6x5 icons is too much... 4x5 would be better in my opinion
- Home screen - same as above
- when LCD density changed no way to add widgets or apps to home screen
all in all very good rom, but need a little bit of fixing

Resizing Swype Keyboard on Galaxy Note in ICS

Hi Guys,
I have been enjoying a reduced size swipe keyboard ever since I got my Galaxy Note till I updated to Ice cream sandwich. Now with the update, the keyboard's width is being stretched to the maximum on both left and right sides. I really need it to be on a reduced size as its easier to swipe with one hand. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

And how did you 'reduce' your keyboard size?

I really don't know as Im new to Android. I meddled with it and somehow got a reduced size, the keypad was positioned in the centre, almost 2cm spacing from the left and right of the screen.

How did you "meddle" exactly? Did you edit a specific file or setting? I'm sure you changed the resolution somewhere.
I'd also like to reduce the swype width. I downloaded the file "swype qhd by keaton" (google it) and it takes a centimeter off each side of swype on my galaxy nexus. It throws a resolution error in landscape mode though, and doesn't stretch.

I did not change any file or sort of that. I was stock. Might be some setting. And yes it does look like way u have with the blue glowy things at the background. Though mine was 2 cm from left and right as well as a proportionately reduced height.

Ok, I see. I'll post if I can find a solution, but I'm not very skilled at this. This needs to be an option for swyping on bigger phones.
hi guys ...
i have troubles with swype ... hated the version that came with ics (the suggestion bar on top of the keyboard was useful but quite annoying) ... i've installed the beta version, but its size was ridiculously small
i've found in beta apk some files "display#_SwypeScreen.ini" ...
and i've found that if you put them in system/data/data/com.swype.../swypedata
it will resize the keyboard nicely ... but only to a reboot when you have to do this again
any idea how to fix this?
Edit: this is a fix to the reboot issue ... quite a move
"option one - rotate the screen into landscape/portrait and then revert back - its sort of working. "

[Q] Asphalt 6 wrong screen calibration?

There is a screenshot attached to illustrate my problem.
As you can see the stylus pointer is well within the career button boundaries but still Asphalt 6 seems to think that it's lower than it actually is.
The offset is the same across the entire screen, about 5 mm to the bottom.
I didn't even notice the black border at the top untill I looked at it on the screenshot just now. It seems that's about 5mm so that probably causes the problem. Asphalt isn't optimized for the Note's resolution/aspect ratio.
Does anyone know a fix for this or do we just have to wait for Gameloft to fix it?

Are you on ICS or GB?
it seems u r running 1.3.3 version and on ICS rom

So it's either downgrade to GB which I don't want to do, or get v1.0.3 that supports HD on ICS but shuts down after a few minutes.
I guess I'll keep using 1.3.3 then and adjust to the offset and hope they release a fix soon, or Asphalt 7 without bugs.
They should warn people in the market that 1.3.3 isn't fully compatible with ICS.

about dpi i think lowering dpi u ll get alot incompatible app mean alot of force closed so 320 is better as i think and to getride of big icons u can setup go lancher and make 8*8 icons and small icons ll satisfy ur needs
about asphalt keep on i am on 1.3.3 on ics lpf + speed mod kernel and works fine but need to clear memory and restart from time to time and sure not on power save mod

yeah downgrading to GB is the only option right now
as i tried both versions side by side and let me tell you 1.03 is true HD play
but 1.3.3 's graphics are not HD, i mean its like streched to match the screen
but the 1.0.3 is made for NOTE only ..i guess
this is the reason m back on GB plus i play real racing 2 on GB
man i love racing games

I've been using a lower dpi for weeks now and have used lower dpi on my old galaxy s for months and never had force closes because of it.
At 320 dpi everything is just way to big for me, not just the homescreen. I don't see the point in having such a big screen if you don't display more information than you can on a 3-4" screen.
But now I know it's a known bug I can stop wondering what's causing it and just adjust to the offset, it doesn't bother me enough to make me want to switch back to GB or change anything else.

slight 'jerky' animation?

just got my razr i here in the uk. love the device so far. fantastic form factor and importantly for me, a superb battery life one things nagging me though...is anyone else seeing a slight 'jerky' animation? i see it when swiping left to the 'quick settings' screen and when pressing the apps button. once in the apps though the left <> right swiping is perfect! pressing the home button from the home screen to show 'manage pages' too is pretty jerky or laggy but not sure if that is how it should be this guy sees it initailly when starting the game just before 4.00 mins in
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SILUVIwiNF0
but once the game is running all seems ok. this guy i can see it at 1.57 when he swipes left from the homescreen to the 'quick settings'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rfud0GFXRg&feature=related
seems like it occurs when at some places within the phone but not everywhere. have i been spoilt using a nexus for the past week running a silky smooth jellybean vs this running ics? or is it a defective unit?
I would say on mine there is the slightest pause when moving to the quick settings that I hadn't noticed before! I hope it doesn't bug me now!!
Going to the manage pages screen or indeed the "helicopter view" (pinch zoom on the homescreen) is really jerky. But I dont find any noticeable lag or jerkiness anywhere else. In fact I find the whole experience smoother and slicker than even my Nexus 7. The only better Android experience I had was Jelly Bean on the Galaxy Nexus which is super silky.
Jelly Bean is slightly faster at a number of things especially switching screen context as the CPU is ramped to a high clock speed as soon as you touch the screen. I noticed the improvement in opening things like the app drawer when I had my Galaxy Nexus and upgraded to JB.

ooops sorry about that! :laugh:well i've adjusted both 'window animation scale' and 'transition animation scale' from 1x to off and that certainly speeds the whole ics experience up so that is worth doing if you have not. hope it does not affect the phone in another adverse way though

Does that not disbale animations?
don't think so. just seems to speed things up a touch.
This does indeed deactivate some Animations but only the ones Navigating in Apps or Settings and so on.
The actual Launcher Animation is not changed at all.
I have the same lag and its not so bad but still somehow annoying.
Didn't noticed that so much in all the test videos out there.
Someone tried to do a hard reset and start from scratch? Maybe fixes it.

Will someone please tell me why Google hasn't improved the rotation speed?!

I thought this was originally a product if poor sensors. But it wasn't. Then I thought it was a bug. Updates went by, then I saw that wasn't the case either. It just seems to be a "feature".
This feature is really beginning to annoy me! Can anyone tell me why it takes about two seconds before the screen rotates in stock Android. My G.Nex takes about the same time. I'm guessing any remedy involves rooting, which is annoying. I'm rooted, I just don't think this should be necessary for people to do (IF it's necessary).
Can anyone shed light on this?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Actually if it rotates in less than a second it'll be more annoying trust me. Like if you are typing and just tilt your device a little bit, it'll be a disaster right? I don't know however if you can modify this.
Sent from my Nexus 7
Aokp and others allow you to change this. Many roms have a shorter rotation speed. They actually did quicken it, 4.0 was really slow. Yes its a feature.

Quite fast considering what it has to do.

I agree with this.. The feature is there to prevent you from rotating the screen by accident. Say using the cam in video chat while holding the device in your hand.. While typing and walking around..
Not sure why this is such a bother to you Not everything should be Instant. If it were instant you would also see the screen refresh as its turning the icons..
the ui . would have to turn resize screen background re position the icons and the notification/ now settings menu all in a fraction of a second. The delay helps with my first sentence as well as gives the Interface to make necessary changes for the new orientation.. Good things come to those who wait..
The rotation pause time is perfect for me.

If anyone has used the iPad, other iDevice or some other non-stock Android devices, the rotation delay is only about half a second and smooth. There is no confusion or constant accidental rotations, it's responsive rather than intentionally slow. Plus, I really don't think too many people accidentally rotate their devices too many times.
Another example is that with my N7, JB 4.2, rooted but stock, It can take up to 4 seconds to rotate on the PIN secured lock screen. In what way is this useful?
Its less than one second on my stock 4.2...
The rotation speed seems much longer on 4.2 than it did on 4.1.2. I noticed the difference immediately after updating.
You can play with the 3 screen animation parameters - they are located in setup under the developers section about half way down the page.
-Window animation scale
-Transition animation scale
-Animation duration scale
These parameters affect the speed at which the display dims and brightens, rotates and transitions..
If you set the 3 parameters to zero, you get a binary effect on all animations - in other words, a single step from one position/brightness/orientation to the next.
I found that you may have to reboot the device (or restart the window manager?) for any changes to take effect.
Hope this helps.
