Hi,
I'm using my Galaxy S as a music player (usually on flightmode, low brightness, black background etc).
I'm on 2.3.6 XWJW5 Voodoo kernel right now, but I'm not too happy with the battery life.
I'm wondering which firmware/rom/kernel combination yields the best results.
*I dont mind downgrading to Froyo stock or something as long as it has very good battery life, especially when my screen is off while playing music.
Thanks in advance.
**Also, does my phone go to deep sleep when playing music with PowerAmp (to save more battery)? Is SetCPU recommended to underclock when screen is off?

My experience says CM7 with the kernel that comes with it... it gave me a battery life of around 30-35 hours with moderate usage..
bump
I would try one of Darky's older Roms (I think something around 10.2 or 9.5 should be the best for you, they had their own kernel called darkcore).
I remember having battery times about 2-3 days with moderate usage (should be even better in flight mode!)

I'd recommend SauROM and Darky for GB, both are JW6 and do a great job. You also can't go wrong with Stock JW4 with HC SpeedMod + Lagfix tbh!

Hey guys,
Since changing firmwares and kernels etc; my battery has been going flat even quicker then at stock. I can understand this seeing as I have my device overclocked to 1.2GHz; but the thing is that it's draining WHILE THE DEVICES IS NOT IN USE. EG. While it's sitting idle with the screen off.
Now, I do have facebook/twitter/weather/news set up to refresh, but only every hour and on Twitter ever 3 hrs, so I don't think this is the case. I also have a profile set up on SetCPU which when the screen turns off, it sets the CPU to Min: 100MHz & Max 100MHz.
On the Battery usage screen it looks as if the screen is using up ~70% of the battery.
Here's my setup:
Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000
I9000XWJM8
SamSet 1.9f
1.2Ghz OC /w Voodoo 4 & BLN
Hey
I had the same issue with my SGS. My setup was stock JF3 plus voodoo lagfix 3.0. Phone was fast but battery drained very quickly, and didn't stop when it was on standby. I suspected the custom kernel that was included in the voodoo lagfix.
I have since flashed JM8 to my phone and used the lagfix found on xda under
[Voodoo Lagfix] : Play Voodoo with STOCK ECLAIR kernels! - FINAL
which is like voodoo lagfix but with JM8 kernel instead. I'm now enjoying a fast SGS with very good battery life.
Cheers
Thanks for the reply.
It could quite possibly be SamSet 1.9f doing the draining; but I'm not sure.
I don't think I could go back to stock after using SamSet anyway; that thing is just incredible
I might have to give it a try. Although I still stand by voodoo giving you the battery issues.
They say it was Version 3 of Voodoo which was giving the battery problems - wait, that was the OC kernel wasn't it?
Not sure; it should be fairly noticeable to everyone when the screen off function is not putting the phone in stand-by mode!
When I had the issues I used Voodoo lagfix 3.0 which is a part of Voodoo beta 4. They said there were battery issues in Voodoo beta 3 (this contained Voodoo lagfix 2.1). I have read a lot of reports of people winding back to Voodoo beta 2 and not having battery issues.
I think all the Voodoo versions have all used OC kernel.
JM8 and voodoo combined cause battery drain. Use other lag fix or firmware...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yeah, I noticed a significant increase in battery drain after installing JM8 + Tayutama's 1.1 ROM w/ Voodoo.
Although I really like the increased speed and Tayutama's add ons, the battery drains almost twice as fast compared to the average during my previous month using the phone with stock I9000DTJG4 firmware, which to me is pretty awful.
there is a very big difference in battery life time. my setup us also JM8+Voodoo4.. I charge my foon every night. and when i'am eating dinner the battery is bleeping.. and there is actualy no active use..
I like the combination of JM8+voodoo.. it really feels great.. so what can we do..?
Well, I use JM8 with RyanZa 2.3 Lagfix and I don't have any problem with battery life.
Using mails (push), Games and MP3 about 2 or 3 hours per day, and battery is at 60% at the and of the day.
Not bad isn't it ?
Same problem here , i have JM8 with Tayutama & Voodoo lagfix , my battery drains like hell ^^
hmmm i noticed yall talked about a fast battery drain using the voodoo lagfix
could it by any way be the latest 1 (V4 beta) ? coz on the website and i quote
" Bugfixes :
The battery life issue introduced in beta3 is resolved. CPU was locked at 1GHz, which some people saw as a feature (snappier Phone!) but in reality this was a bug, sorry guys "
so V4 beta should be a fix and not suck up much battery like V3 beta
as for myself my phone was a First Gen i9000 international version and ever since i got my phone it never lasted a full day of use....
except for when i changed 3g to 2g , disabled the internet apn , disabled the auto sync , pretty much disabled everything and went very low on the screen light and yet ended @ 10-11 pm with 2% battery life with a max talktime of an hour thruout the day and screen was off almost all of the time except when viewing sms's , yes it lasted a full day to me but i sure hate using my phone that way, pretty useless T_T

Thanks for the suggestion, but Tayutama's 1.1 ROM is supposed to include beta 4.
I've got the international version as well and usually got 2, sometimes 3 full days usage with the stock firmware (with about 2 hours of browsing, 2-3 SMS's, 1-2 phone calls and 1 hr of music a day). I did my best to maximise battery life by switching my background wallpaper to be mostly black, and the phone set to minimum brightness
Ordinarily I'd be down to about 60-65% battery life after a day of usage. Using JM8 and Tayutama's ROM I'm down to 22% after 1 day...
It's really weird. Just a day or two ago, I reported having battery issues with the combination of JM8 + Tayutama + Voodoo b3 lagfix only.
Today, I unplugged my phone in the morning (approx 08:30) after an overnight charge, rebooted it just in case, and have been using it quite heavily. Lots of 3G data and Wi-Fi (I hear Wi-Fi is a culprit in some cases), a few phone calls, SMS, and music. I have brightness set to low, and black backgrounds where possible.
It's now been more than 12 hours of operation, and not once have I had the rapid battery drain and excess heat that I had complained about. Or wakelocks, now that I think about it. Remaining charge is roughly a third. I actually don't mind; I'm of the belief that smartphones need a daily charge anyway.
But the heat problem. It didn't happen today. I don't know why. In fact, I don't even know what caused it. I'm glad it didn't happen, and hope it doesn't again, but it's just very very weird. :?
With JM8 (Tayutama Edition v1.1) voodoo + OC my battery draining very very quik.
I have applied update.zip "[Voodoo Lagfix] : Play Voodoo with STOCK ECLAIR kernels!" and now batery life is very good.
P.S. = to applay update from Tayutama voodoo to STOCK kernel + voodoo LagFix i don't disable lag fix before or other ... just update kernel over it ... of course i lose OC but now my SGS work like a charm and batery life is very very good
I just flashed back to stock from Voodoo 3.0. If you go to the dedicated Voodoo thread, you'll have people complaining about the battery life while others try to dispel the rumor that Voodoo is the cause. I fully believe it's Voodoo. Since flashing back, I have the exact same setup I had before {done from scratch} while using OCLF instead. Battery is fine now.

man this is almost the same behavior i have with my phone. It can last one day (around 25-26 hours) only when i disable everything, put the brightness to the lowest level and pay attention to the apps running in background, this with low/moderate usage (2-3 hours display on, few calls or sms). My phone drains battery as hell.
I guess there is some Calibration Problem when you are flashing a new firmware. Try to flash a new firmware with full battery.
Just went and disabled my current Voodoo b3 and installed the Stock Kernel Voodoo... (Checking each way with a Quadrant bench.)
My battery suddenly went from 26% (curio's Voodoo) to 65% (stock Voodoo). wtf. :s
I totally need to refresh battery stats...
I've noticed a couple of times that my battery is around 40% and I restart my phone and it jumps to 75% w/c I find strange, also 100 to 70% seems to to drop so fast and it stabilizes at ~60%
Can anyone tell me what is the best ROM for battery life? Or best Kernal/Modem combo?
I dont mind a stripped down ROM.. dont use many features!
I've tried many ROMs life Darky Resurrection 10.2/Simplicity 0.31/Surface 3.1 & 3.2/Juicy 3.0 etc etc. but cant settle on one...
Battery lasts 18hours max.. (some calls/wifi use/fruit ninja for max 30 mins~1 hr)
Have tried recalibrating my battery too..
Currently on Surface 3.2 with Speedmod T24 kernal
thanks

If you prefer Samsung roms, try Milkeys, very good battery life.
CM/Miui , actual Twooey III (Galnet) ist good, pure english actual version also really good battery life.

These threads are worthless. Each users battery usage is going to be COMPLETELY different. It all boils down to your configuration, personal usage, Wi-Fi usage, GPS usage, apps installed, Your settings, what you allow to run in the background, and hundreds of other variables. Plus there are about 62 threads in the forums asking this same exact question with at least 5xs as many different answers.
Anyways. Cm7 is what I use and get about a day and a half if I need to.
Bottom line, no 1 rom is any more spectacular over another one when it comes to battery. Find one you like and take steps to get your battery and usage in sync.

I have tried many many ROMs and cant figure it out.. sometimes suggestions help
My Wi-Fi usage is more, but dont use GPS much, No autosync or Data.. No autobrightness (keep it to a minimum), I try and disable autostarts of almost all apps

Insanity cm032/platypus neo9 redux 5
My Bad.. someone pls move the thread to Q/A
Darky 10.1 + Semaphore 1.4.2 kernel are the best combination I've had so far.
also remember to do "Clear data" of "Media Storage" from "Settings->Applications->Manage Applications" after flashing any kernel or ROM. (to avoid system_server bug that waste CPU)
Surface JVQ
I have observed Surface JVQ goes well for battery life, try that.
Lets say battery life with just wifi always on and which rom last longer? 2days or more??
Best Battery life .. I'd Say FROYO. !
dont wana move back to Froyo.... let stick to Gingerbread
Darky's 10.2 RE here on JVQ, try replacing XXJVO modem with ZSJPG modem, I flashed it a week or so ago after awful battery life & I'm getting easily 2-3 days on same usage as you, you'll want to keep an eye on your 3G, coverage & GPS if you use it just to make sure signal strength in your location is as good as before though.

Also, can you give me a link to the zsjpg modem and howto install/flash. Hav installed darky resurrection..

No worries, find it HERE & makes sure you read as much as you can.
My way to best batteries life is Juwe 5.1 jvq rom + Galaxian Kernel EE. Normal using ( callin, summary more than 3 hours, gaming 3-4 hours, sms, www 2-3 h) on one charging. Finnaly phone was active more than 40h.
The best solution:
1.Rom with dark colours theme, less colours less battery drain.
2.Proper kernel like Galaxian or Talon
3.Proper charging , bumpy charging method.
that's all
Moved to the ZSJPG modem, SpeedMod t24 kernal, a lighter ROM (Surface 3.2).. can already feel the difference!!!
Galaxian kernel seems to be juicing less batt source as compare to semaphore

Juwe's Smart Edition v5.3 XXJVR best battery life for me so far.
75% of Battery free after 18+ hours of use [10-12 calls/books 20+mins/wifi full time/video15+mins]
JUWE"S 5.2 JVQ + Talon 4.4.20-1200 + RFS + 119 sys apps + 60 user apps
I have a pic attached. Check this link
Hey guys n girls,
I am running OneCosmic ICS and the latest FuguMOD kernel (I think Noshur type?) and the phone is running as smooth and as perfect as I want. Better than ever before. The kernel is not OC or UV in anyway it's running as is.
When the phone is left not in use it last forever battery wise. I'm running a good modem to suit my provider etc. I can even be connected to the net with wifi and 3G on (which in any other ROM or kernel prior to this would have drained battery somewhat) and it hardly uses a drop. I am running autokiller, autostarts 1.7.5 (works on ICS) Juice defender ultimate 3.8.8.
The phone battery use is perfect except when I use it. Like if I spend 10min non-stop typing texts it with chew through like 60% battery and it gets really warm. I've done a reflash, wipe yarder yarder yarder all the typical things that they say to do for excessive battery drain. To emphasise this...say at full battery the phone is on and left running on standby it will still be at like 70% after 18-20hours later; but say if the phone is fully charged and I use the phone for 45min it will go down in the red and ask me to plug in to power. That's pretty bad!
Something suggests to me that this could be a kernel issue? Like the ondemand is too savage and the idle is perfect. What would one suggest that I do to address this issue?
I am not going to pass the blame or go flashing other kernels or anything like that....I think this kernel is actually pretty good, but I would like to make it so it is a bit more conservative and not so revved up when in use. I have NStools but haven't done anything with it.
Would someone suggest some voltage values I could put in that will bring the ondemand down but leave my idle as it is?
hi, currently i am on darky rom 10.4.2 xwjw1 rom... i have tried different modems on it.. i am happy with the rom but only problem is battery.. i am not happy with battery life.. will going to semaphore kernel will help battery life??? or give any other kernel or rom that gives me more battery life like upto 2 days... if performance degrades little than its ok with me.. is there any hack or scripts which will improve battery life??? battery juiced a lot when using 3G.. please help me guys... any good battery saving ICS rom will also do..
With Darkys i had the "best" battery with XXJVQ, Semaphore and turned off 3g. Just had a widget to toggle 3g quickly. That just saved 20% a day for me.
And i know thats not exactly that what you want but moving to ICS increased my battery life pretty much

thanks for replying.. but i use 3g internet and i do switched it off when not required.. and i am ready to move to ics rom... which ics rom are u using??? what combination gives best battery life??? also give links if possible...
Well, first of all, there applications that are supposted to increase battery life. For a few examples, you could try Juice Defender(my personal favourite) or Watchdog Task Manager. I personally did try some GB Darkys' rom, and I wouldn't recommend it. The battery life was terrible. I'm now running WeUI, an ICS rom. I also tried CM9, and it had a pretty good battery life, but it's not really what I would recommend you to use as a daily usage rom.
You might also want to check your screen brightness settings, I personally have mine set at "automatic".
Also I'm not that sure if semaphore has a good battery life. I heard that Icy Glitch has better, but I am still running semaphore 1.0.0.
Let me know if those apps make any difference!
Back in the day when i was a darky user, i also tried semaphore and hat good results with it, 2days or more were common. I used BUJV3 modem mostly. But generally I had 2g running. The battery life always drops a lot when you constantly turn 3g on. Btw moving to ics reduced my battery life, I charge every night (sometimes earlyer).
i have juice defender... also i turn off the 3g when not required... and i have set the brightness to minimum.. but still i want to conserve more battery... can any one give me the kernel which uses lowest battery without much performance lag??? any ROM??? any good ICS ROM with good battery???
you can undervolt..
http://damiangto.emc2production.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=314
I was using an app called SuperPower XDA-BETA v0.80, that can be found on market.
As for me it's the best app for customising power usage, a bit tricky, and rot needed for most features, but I was finally able to prolong my battery life to 2,5 days.
i don't think so apps can save much battery as it will switch of the radio services which i am already making off when not required.. i am talking about battery Hacks or Kernel or ROM which will give extra battery power???
]Dude you want to use 3G too and still want battery life of upto 2 days !!! quite a dream...
anyways few things you can try on.. these are not hacks just tips
- remove any widgets on your homescreen
- turn off autosync
- don't use any constantly updating apps like weather, clock widget etc
- turn off auto rotate (read in some thread this as a tip too)
- don't use automatic task managers
- don't use any battery saver, turn off the data manually when not using everytime
- don't use live wallpaper and try to use some dark background image preferably black
- use some black and white theme
- remove/ freeze as many system applications as possible which don't affect your normal functioning and the apps that you don't use
As I'm getting a new phone for free (Galaxy S2) and the S1's sound quality is far superior I'm thinking of using it as an music player purely for AUX in the car. The current problem is that the charging port in the car is broken for now, so an battery saving rom is required for long time usage without having to charge the phone outside the car too often.
I'm really fond of the stock Samsung music player and currently running XWJWB with Semaphore because of that. Is there a setup that is more battery friendly and stable? (The phone will be used without an SIM-card and in airplane mode so I guess modems dosen't play a big part in battery life?)
If AOSP roms should prove themselves to be more battery friendly I'd gladly accept any suggestions for non-stock music players too, but in my opinion stock roms have the best quality!
P.S My *probably* fake 1650mAh battery does not hold it's charge for long nowadays so if anyone would recommend a new not-to-pricey battery I wouldn't be unhappy (1800mAh+/no extended back cover would be optimum)

Flash a newer stock firmware. JW6 is really good or JVT. Remove every system app you dont need with nobloat. When your phone is debloated undervolt it and push it down to 800MHZ.
