Right now I'm using cyanogen 6.1 but I'm noticing a lot of battery drain and on my car charger my phone continues to drain even while charging. I don't want to go back to stock because I love features like portable wifi, but I'm a heavy user and I need solid battery life. Any ROM suggestions for me that I can flash through clockwork while I'm at work? Or any ideas on how I can fix the battery on my current CM ROM?
first about the battery life... Got to settings, about phone, battery use. What is eating up your battery? usually display eats up most of my life. Try turning your display down... Maybe you have a rogue app running in the background eating up your juice?
As for ROMS, the stock ROM does have wifi hotspot and USB tethering. Perhaps try the stock ROM for a while and see if that makes any difference? It could be a battery problem/ issue. There is a great app for CM that allows you to see your battery life/wear @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765609
The ROM I have been using is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714184. It is very close to stock, but has many performance tweaks and such. I use it with this kernel : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820172. By far the best battery life on any ROM/kernel combination I have tried. Both can be flashed by Clockwork.
Also, when Gingerbread finally gets here, there is a much updated and detailed battery meter installed with graphs. Hopefully it will only be a few more weeks.
I've got a 2 year old I9305 from the UK that's rooted and using the German 4.3 Stock ROM (couldn't update to 4.3 with a UK ROM at the time).
The battery life used to be much better - I've had it for a year (I bought it as not working from a family member and then got it running) and would easily get over a days use including hooked up to the wifi most of the day, 2-3 hours with the screen on etc but now I find I'm often getting less than a day with similar use. I've since done a factory reset and re-installed my apps but it's not improved anything noticeably.
I rotate through 4 Anker 2200mAh a genuine Samsung and a Samsung battery bought on Amazon (genuine - not sure about that!) using a wall mounted charger to do most of the charging as I spent the last 8 months traveling and didn't want my phone sat around in dorm rooms plugged into the mains while I wasn't in the room.
If I only had the one battery then it would make sense that it's ability to hold a full 2100mAh charge would drop after a year but with 5-6 batteries taking the strain, I'd assume that this would be less likely. I was looking at apps like Nova battery tester and An tu tu Tester and will give them a go tonight on which ever battery is in the phone - are they any good?
If the batteries are still taking a solid charge then I guess it's time to go back down the route of a custom ROM but as I travel a lot, I'm loathe to mess around with my S3 too much. I had an HTC HD2 that was running CWM and a couple of different ROM's and it died on me a couple of times while I was on the road. That was less of an issue than it will be now as I was traveling with a netbook - the S3 is my only device now so I need to to be stable. I'm not averse to going through the process of putting a ROM on the phone if there are a couple that are known to be super stable and lighter than stock on battery life, but if I can stick with my stock set up with some tweaks...I've got All in one toolbox controlling which apps load on boot, greenify to hibernate apps (instead of a task killer knocking them off) and No Bloat stopping the bloatware from running.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Hmm.. As you are using greenify, boot apps control and no bloat, you are extremely in control of your rom - that's good.
I think that there would be negligible to none difference in battery life between your rom and any custom. Stock Touchwizz roms are said to have better battery (from my own experience too), therefore installing any custom aosp rom should be rejected.
What I can suggest? Download some recent full rom from sammobile or live updates samsung (search google) and flash it through odin. Or maybe you have tried it?
However running one rom for few months may have some influence on battery too.
Also, installing custom kernel is the thing that may help you optimize battery/performance with few interesting features. Boeffla has great description and faq on the website and user-friendly config app. But that's only if you want to experiment (it is still rock-stable) a little bit.
Try custom
The 4.3 JB upgrade is well known as a battery killer. I had stock 4.3 from Base (Germany), but the 4.3 from H3G (UK) is the same for battery life. I have used CM 11.0 as well as others, almost all are nicer to batteries than stock.
Currently I use the S5 Elite Lite Rom. The current version 1.4 seems to be very stable even with both cpu and gpu overclocked. Battery life is still a little better than stock 4.3 and that is despite not using the deep sleep feature. CM 11.0 is even better for battery, at least for me probably down to there being none of the Stock bloatware. Hope that helps.

The current ROM was one from a year ago when I first set up the phone but I've since done a factory reset and reinstalled all my apps.
I didn't realize that I could run a custom kernel with a stock ROM - that's something I'll look into. I don't have a custom recovery set up as the last time I used one on my HD2 I had nothing but trouble and, as I said, I need this set up to be reliable over pretty much everything else.

How long have you been running S5 Elite ROM? I think I'd probably stick with CM, though I'm intrigued by some of the other stuff out there, but ideally I'd like to stick with a solid, stock rom without a custom recovery.
SYMLY, I don't really understand what you meant in your post.

I have been running the S5 Elite ROM for a couple of weeks only. In that time I have found it very stable, by stable I mean no random reboots, and no force closes. It is not completely glitch free for example some apps need to have the sd card unmounted before being installed. I run it overclocked at 1.8Ghz and slight over clocking on the GPU too. Antutu score was around 20800. The S5 Elite ROM gives me a stock look including the S apps I want specifically SPlanner and SVoice.
If you really want to have a completely stock rom with good battery life you might need to consider downgrading to a 4.1.2 rom from Samfirmware or waiting for the fabled 4.4.2 upgrade. I've been waiting on that for months and finally gave up, hence I'm now using the S5 Elite.
Best of luck deciding, I guess there is no one size fits all solution.
Roms that may help with the batteries.
So far i've seen that stock roms usually consume less battery than stock firmware . something that may help you is deleting apps that you know you'll never use at all. that removes the autorun consuming less battery. Now. among the best but remains on 4.3, is the Alliancerom v3.5. i've seen that my battery drained less faster than on stock firmware. but also due to its kernel it can be controlled the amount of mhz using for process (if you don't know how to use it, do not touch it) . and also the charging rate can be controlled.
If you want a touchwiz based rom, i recommend AllianceROM V3.5 or AMCHA rom v6.11. Both roms are super stable, Alliance lags quite a bit though. Ive been using AMCHA (with S5 theme and agni kernel from aroma installer) rom for awhile, so far so problems and pretty good battery life
You can also try archidroid and neat ROM they are one of the best touchwiz 4.3 roms
To be honest, I'm thinking that I'd rather go down the route of checking over my batteries and trying out any other utilities that might aid in reducing the battery use of my S3.
If I were to go down the custom ROM route then I'd be more interested in the kernels as it's been pointed out that they're going to have more impact on power consumption.
So, any suggestions for utilities - as I've said I'm running all in one toolbox, no bloat and greenify. What about apps to check the actual capacity of the battery?
Well. That been said. Then my suggestion is that you delete apps you dont use at all. Actually that also works in alliancerom 3.5 or any rom or stock firmware. It is obvious that if you delete apps that have autorun enabeled by default when you restart or turn on it affects the ram and also affects the battery draining. My alliancerom 3.5 battery last even more than the original firmware. I've deleted plenty of apps i didnt need at all. More like junk to me. Of course. All of this you can do only if you are rooted. Also another suggestion. Ebay sells i9305 extended battery. It comes with the double, Triple and even more amount of mah for pretty good prices. With them i can assure you that you will use your smartphone with the highest performance without been worried of low battery until night.

No... nono ononono.
Stock kernel will have similar battery performance as agni or boeffla (on same settings). Sure, custom can bring a enhancment or two, but the battery improvements would be minimal.
A custom kernel will only improve a stock kernel battery performance if the stock kernel is ****ty to begin with. Not the case with TW 4.3
It's the rom, and it's apps and your apps.
How about installing Better Battery Stats and posting a few screenshots?

Cheers for that. I'm aware of the obvious basic stuff affecting battery use like cutting down the number of running apps (hence why I use all in one, no bloat etc) but no little about kernels or their battery related benefits.
That app sounds good, I'll stick it on today and then happily post a few screenshots for you to look through. I've just had a look and it's a paid app - bearing mind I'm only needing the use of this once or twice are there any similar free ones.

If you have zillion apps (like me), then they tend to update frequently, use more and more resources, and services.
I was astonished to see that some apps that i installed just in case - like ebay, skype, tripadvisor - and never used yet, - were running services and have put themselves into autostart!
if you are rooted and use autostarts utility, you can disable a lot of junk in the on start and after start events.
you will immediately see the difference in boot time.
i also deinstalled the apps mentioned above, and battery usage back to normal.

Ok, for those new to these things I'll give you a brief run down of the 3 apps I keep mentioning to save people posting suggestions for things that they already do....
Nobloat (root) - delete (including permanently) any apps including system apps (get rid of the pre-installed bloatware.
All in one toolbox pro (there's a free version) - I use this to clean up my autostarts - I can determine which apps will load on boot - both user apps and system apps.
Greenify - hibernates apps rather than killing them so they don't then autostart. There's also a way to have apps brought out of hibernation if their push notifications come through.
All in all, 3 very useful apps.
Feel free to mention any other ones to help things run a little smoother.

Do what i did, i bought a 6000mah mbuynow battery off ebay which seems to be around 4000mah true. It lasts about 90% more than the stock battery. im still not impressed with the battery life as phones these days can achieve the 8 hours of screen on time that i get with my extended battery with there stock batterys. i9300 has better battery life for some reason even though my i9305 is undervolt and underclock

That sugestion is completly wrong. A 6000mAh battery is huge and adds a lot of weight and bulkiness to the phone.
Exactly! it's perfectly viable to live with a standard battery on our device, if you use a right rom and de-bloat.
Say no to bulk! ))

Why are you Lisbon in Moscow?
I bought a Samsung captivate from a friend yesterday. He was running Kitkat on it and it is very slow. My only use of it as a phone is recieving calls and text messages, nothing else like facebook, whatsapp or anything. My main use for this phone is to use it as a portable music player as I travels alot. I saw an old thread from head-fi that, this phone can be transformed into an Audiophile level music player using a Voodoo kernel and an Voodoo control plus App. But that was in 2011. What is the current situation? How can I get the best sound and best battery life out of this great device? I mean, which rom or kernal or modes to get the best sound quality out of this phone?
I use DSP Manager http://android.appstorm.net/how-to/music/install-and-configure-dsp-manager-on-any-rom/ It seems to make better sound than the stock sound driver. Battery Life on the other hand I'm not too sure about, and I have used 3 different batteries with the same outcome. You could wipe battery data
TheYar said:
Erasing the battery stats (for you rooters/flashers)
Sometimes you just want your phone to forget everything he thinks he knows about his battery, and re-learn it from scratch. Your phone maintains a file with statistics on battery usage, which in turn is used to help calculate battery life at any given time. Sometimes, especially if you've been playing with ROMs, kernels, and lagfixes, the stats in the file just aren't applicable anymore to how the hardware is being used, so you get crazy battery drain.
Clockwork Recovery has a simple function to wipe the battery stats. If you can't run Clockwork, use ADB or a terminal emulator (search the market) to delete that battery stats file located at /data/system/batterystats.bin. The link at the bottom to joeybear's thread has a little more info.
The general idea is to start by trying the above - make sure it isn't your own fault or maybe just a bad battery, then drain, bump charge, and wipe stats - in that order.
There are lots of ideas about what may or may not happen when you experiment with the above. Wiping battery stats after a ROM flash that already wiped them for you is at least redundant and may even contribute to a battery drain problem. Some say you should wipe first and then drain and bump charge. Be careful about wiping stats and bump charging too much, though. Over-charging your battery will hasten its demise.
HOWEVER, if you're like I was when I first started this thread, you've seen the above recommended many times, and none of it has ever helped you one bit with an actual sudden battery drain problem. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765656

I use my old captivate strictly as an mp3 player using the captivating X8.1 rom and devil kernel. The voodoo sound app is still kicking around the Web I'm sure.
Instead of using the headphone jack, I made a line out cable that plugs into the charge port and on the other end of the cable is a line out 3.5mm jack and a regular USB plug to charge at the same time. All the info for wiring and resistors to use I got searching around this forum and the "fun with resistors" thread in the i9000 forums.
Using Power amp for my player app, with all other non essential apps removed, and in airplane mode with WiFi enabled I get about 15 hours of music from my own collection on a 32gb micro sd card. It can also play wile charging with minimal or no noise depending on the charger used.
It really makes a great mp3 player.

You are welcome, I try to help as much as I can!
Hi!
Since last year, I got the problem that my P990 is discharging very fast. Commonly the battery needed to be charged once a day, but now it's twice, at least!
Of course, the first thing I did was to buy a new battery. It's an original LG battery, but nothing changed. I also tried one of these big batteries with 2800mAh, but even that didn't change much.
I tried several CFWs and Kernels, at the moment the phone's running on [4.4.4][P990][AOSPA] ParanoidAndroid 4.6, 2.6.39.4-Kowalski-Stable-M1 Kernel.
The strange thing is, the battery's even draining, when the phone's turned off. If it's charged to 100% and then turned off, the next day, the battery is below 1%, the phone can't be turned on due to the low charge.
I'm not sure, if it's really a software problem, there are no special apps installed, it's just the ParanoidAndroid without anything special installed.
Anyone who could help me, please?
I also suffer battery drain in "doing nothing" mode - deep sleep mostly. I even switch off mobile data. It is not normal the battery to be drained completely for about two days when the phone just stays on the table in deep sleep with mobile data switched off. Anyone could help us?

This phone had the longest stand-by life with temasek CM 7.1, I could go 12 hours and lose only 1-2% which is impossible with current android versions, not my SG4 or my galaxy tab 4 7" do that, they lose 3% idle in just 1 hour.
Also by this time your battery is already over 2 years. Its current capacity may be well half what it used to be when brand new. Buying a new one won't help that much because it might be at around 70-80% capacity at best because of time. Then again 2 batteries are better than 1.
if you can you should get a new phone, they are better in every way and only $150 dollars which is more than what our optimus 2x is worth now-a-days. I use it 24 hours on hooked at the back of my TV as an android TV :silly:

i was thinking about doing this as well... can you pm me how did you hook it (which rom - i presume some of the older cm's since hdmi doesn't work on newer ones, how do you control it etc...) - thanks in advance

Pretty simple, any stock based rom works great, old GB has HDMI with quality selector, ICS has only HDMI output at 1080i/720p.
I stuck it inside a project box and I screw it behind my TV, used the USB port on the TV to keep it powered all the time but just remember to take out the battery or it will die (puff). Charge the battery to 100% then store.
Caution, not all USB ports form TVs are friendly so do like me and cut the data lines and use only the red/black wires (outer pins in the USB).
Lastly a mini keyboard with touch pad is what I use to control it... and a iPega gamepad for gaming. Doesn't work in GB stock roms so you got to use ICS/CM roms for it to work.
P.M. If you got any doubts

Hey guys,
unfortunately there are no custom roms that fit my preferences. i took a deep look at the MXROM V8.0.0 and the Rock Z1L 4.0, but these two roms are not what i'm searching for. I want a rom that is really stable and doesn't run out of battery midday.
So i want to return back to Stock.
i would like to know how i get the best experience using the .236 stock rom in terms of battery life and smoothness.
What mods or apps can i use to have the best battery life and remove those annoying wakelocks?
What mods or apps can i use to have a lag free rom?
thanks in advance!

What do you expect to hear?
My answer is: there is no global solutions we can give to your question. There are so many things you can do.
It all begins how you use your phone. Do you need the performance the phone offers all the time?
For example in my case no. I am no gamer at all. I use my phone the friendly way. Do some calls, some messaging, browse the Web, taking some photos. So I limit the phones cpu performance to 1.4 GHz. This for example saves battery.
Lollipop has got the active radio bug. You can get rid off it with the help of xposed framework.
You can for example Greenify apps to prevent high wakelocks.
Did you notice a massive difference between stock and MX in terms of battery? I tried both and had no noticeable difference.
Thank you for your replies!
I usually use my phone for browsing the internet, instant messaging, calling and 9gag. I'm not using my phone for games. Usually my screenbrightness is on very low.
With MX rom i had big drops while my phone was on stand by (from 70% to 63% in 4 hours). Screen on time was worse. Before i was on stock .216 and there was no big battery drops at all!
Greenyfy is a good start! What xposed module are you talking about for the radio active bug?

First of all, if you still have the original battery, it probably has lost at least 50% of its holding capacity or more. Second, when you say stand by, you are not telling us what apps or services are running. Third, the major contributors to wasting battery are Google apps, facebook, what's up and similar apps. Next comes sony bloat with all their albums and other crap. So, if you have them, your battery won't last.
I have used stock and all available custom roms. With the exception of a worse camera quality in low light conditions (no difference whatsoever in daylight), custom roms are vastly superior in all aspects. That also includes overheating. Yes, stock roms overheat more, because they won't let you use tools available in custom roms.
Greenify: although, it does the job, the app itself consumes battery, which negates the benefits. Also, remember that when you flash every other day, you don't give your current rom the time to settle, and that usually takes a couple of battery cycles when the rom works extra time setting/reading partitions and as a result, you will always have more heat and loss of battery juice. You won't let the rom settle and instead move to another rom and start the cycle again. This way, you will never find a suitable rom whether stock or custom.
If you prefer stock, then root, get rid of bloat, get a firewall and deny access to all apps, except the ones you want to connect to the internet. And stay with it for at least 10 days. But then, I promise, you will discover what I said above is true...
P.S. Radio active bug: the module does NOT fix the problem, it just changes the way it is reported. This is why neither Google nor Cyanogen people have accepted the patches, which irritated the hell out of that guy, who thinks he knows "the inner workings of android" better than others....
wow thanks a lot bredrin! Gonna try this when i reach home, except advanced kernel. I'm on locked bootloader.
