Google wants to further gay rights across the world, launching a new campaign called “Legalize Love” on Saturday.
The tech giant hopes to advance marriage rights for gay, lesbian and bisexual people in countries where it has offices, beginning in Poland and Singapore.
Google exec Mark Palmer-Edgecumbe introduced the campaign at the Global LGBT Workplace Summit in London, reports dot429.
“We want our employees who are gay or lesbian or transgender to have the same experience outside the office as they do in the office,” Palmer-Edgecumbe said. “It is obviously a very ambitious piece of work.”
Google plans to develop relationships between companies and support grass-roots campaigning. Legalize Love will focus primarily on countries with homophobic laws and cultures.
“‘Legalize Love’ is a campaign to promote safer conditions for gay and lesbian people inside and outside the office in countries with anti-gay laws on the books,” Google wrote in a statement.
Palmer-Edgecumbe says Google is beginning the push in Singapore because the country is striving to be a global financial leader.
This is hardly Google’s first step toward advancing gay rights. Last month, during international Gay Pride celebrations, the search tool released a charming Easter egg. In a 2008 blog post written by co-founder Sergey Brin, Google also publicly expressed its opposition to California’s Prop. 8, the state constitutional amendment that took away the right of same-sex couples to marry.
The story is from here: http://mashable.com/2012/07/08/google-gay-legalize-love/

I like this much better than their "It gets better" campaign geared towards gay teenagers and/or high schoolers. I think it would have been better for that campaign if they would have focused on ALL teenagers or high schoolers and not just the gay ones. A good portion of high schoolers have depression and suicide issues, my teenage cousin hung herself a few years back, and I have had other acquaintances kill themselves. Everybody needs the "it gets better" message, they should have included all teenagers regardless of sexual preference. As far as this campaign I support it. Legalize love!

I can't wait for the inevitable "BOYCOTT GOOGLE!!!!!11!!!1!" posts. Have using yahoo or whatever janky search engine.

I honestly don't think that I could care less. Personally I say just let them do what they want. I am so sick of having this gay rights crap shoved down my throat. Mostly because I'm straight and don't like things shoved down my throat. So just legalize it so that they will shut the hell up.

Mod edit: Offensive and childish comment removed. Post something like that again and I'll have words in private with you.

It Gets Better works very closely with STOP Teen Suicide and while they don't directly associate their campaigns and products with them, the two pretty much go hand in hand.

Wow! Apple/Jobs complete ignores the fact the CPUs are made by Samsung

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395315,00.asp#fbid=46CYcVkiOEC
Ultimately, though, Fadell's point of view won out. Apple acquired a couple of chip companies, PA Semi and Intrinsity, and created its own chips, the A4 and later A5. Jobs explains why he didn't go with Intel for the iPad and iPhone in the book.
"There were two reasons we did not go with them" he said. "One was that they are just really slow. They are like a steamship, not very flexible. We are used to going pretty fast. Second is that we just did not want to teach them everything, which they could go and sell to our competitors,"
Jobs also voiced other criticisms. He said Intel's "graphics suck" and that its processors don't have the same system-on-a-chip efficiencies of the A4/A5.

Not to mention, it behooves Samsung to get along well with Apple to keep their lucrative business. No way would samsung disrupt that flow of money from Apple. Apple could smack Samsung around all day long, every day, and Sammy would overlook it just to keep the extreme Apple revenue coming.
Samsung might be stuck working with Apple as part of a contract. Regardless of the open lawsuits. I would love to see Samsung pull the rug out from under Apple and watch them squirm.

Wow! Samsung basically is using Apple technology in their chips. Not only Samsung, but also a great many other companies use Apple tech in their products. Samsung owes a lot to Apple and they repay them by ripping them off.
It has always been said the Asians do a good job of copying the hard work of Western civilized nations. Much of the technology in the world came from the USA.
Well to be honest the USA is a bully to any small nation really. E.g. Cuba they have so many doctors and scientists there that could sell their medicine around the world and prosper themselves, but nope, the USA still keep the embargo on them so they're practically stuck. Or Mexico or any third world country, big corporations to medium sized corporations, and even the government sometimes, tend to exploit the labour force in a third world country. Or did you read the article of where US scientists went to a south American country and exploited the populace by administering them STD's and other diseases in "hopes of finding a cure for another." (Note the people did not even know what the scientists were gong to do with them)
So why did I say the USA is a bully, well because of their bullying, they are practically leaving the smaller nations or less prosperous nations, heck even some 1st world countries too, stuck or unable to develop. And since they are unable to develop, they have no new findings. Hence why USA is one of the only nations to have new findings, because they are the ones who allow or disallow countries to prosper.

ARM existed long before Apple's involvement.
They were one of the major RISC cpu developers.
All that happened was Apple needed a cpu for the Newton (remember that? Many people don't), ARM's RISC processor was nearly up to the job but they didn't have the financial resources to get it there, so Apple invested in them and they created a new company.
Apple provided money and the requirements, ARM and VLSI continued to design and create the CPUs.
For instance, many Brits will remember the BBC Master (first to use an ARM processor in certain models in 86, I miss those orange function keys) and Archimedes/A series, and the horrible RiscPC (powerful computer with very little software support that with "a flick of a switch" could be turned into a P60 dog with lots of software but not the grunt to run it, so basically the worst of both worlds).
I grew up with the BBC B with a sideways ROM/RAM board giving 48KB rather than the standard 32KB
Apple had been unsuccessful at getting into the UK Education market so attempted to ride on the back of Acron and set up Xemplar Software. It failed and they relocated to Eire after Acron sold their shares. I know several people who worked for Xemplar at the time.
By then ARM had long realised that it needed to expand the use of it's processors as schools were moving on to PCs, hence why they branched out into set top boxes for satelite and cable, and mobile devices.
fact trivia
1st ARM CPU = MOS 6502
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOS_Technology_6502
ARM = Acorn RISC Machine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM
6502 is truly going back. Not sure I really want to remember the Vic 20/C64 days.
Ahhh oki. Thanks for clearing that up.

China's HUGE "ghost cities"

http://goo.gl/3hse5
My dad showed me these pictures and stories this morning, I thought it was very interesting. Nobody knows why China is building these gigantic empty cities. They aren't just building them in China either, one in Africa is designed to hold up to a half million people and features 750 eight-story apartment buildings, 12 schools and more than 100 retail units. This one ghost city cost $3.5 billion and covers 12,355 acres. Apparently China is building 20 of these cities a year, and nobody really knows why.

Some speculation that I have read is that China has always been known to be very patient, and that they dont plan by the year or decade but by the generation. Apparently they are told that if they work hard their grandchildren will reap the benefits of their labor. Could they be planning on lifting the one child ban? If so, speculation suggest their population could quadruple in one generation. But why cities in Africa? This is all new to me and very confusing. Anybody else seen this or want to speculate?

Why would the thread be closed? This is an off topic discussion of the ghost cities with hopefully some critical thinking and speculation as to their purpose. Where I live people are so ethnocentric that nobody has even heard of them, I was hoping by asking a broad audience that maybe someone has heard something that I haven't. I think its very interesting. If threads about "rooting toasters" and "taking over Australia" can stay open I dont see why a serious thread with plenty of potential for discussion should be closed. Besides this IS off topic, I was told by mods that just about anything goes here with the exception of the F word.
Also those are Cyclopes, or mutants, but not aliens. Haven't you seen Futurama? lol.

I'm thinking China wants to show to the world they have the workforce to build something great, and these cities would detract from the farm lands and poverty in China. One day some one might move in there.
this reminds me of a city built near the 38th parallel in North Korea. It was built to looks lik another city there, but its empty and they have speakers announcing "good" propaganda loud enough for the South Koreans to hear on the border.
I thought about these and posted when I saw the pictures of the city in the images thread. But that turned out to be an old Russian Ghetto.
Speculation of these ghost cities is widespread. I do know one thing, the massive building campaign in the past has caused a shortage of both concrete and steel world wide.
A few winters ago, steel was so crazy in price that some factories would not take and order at a specified price. They would take the order and quote a price to the customer when the product was available to ship. This was in winter stoves.
Like I said there are several theories for these buildings. Places for people to move off the farms.
Personally I think they are for us Americans. China is going to call in the debt that we owe them and we citizens will have to go into indentured servitude. LOL J/K.... Really Obama has sold many citizens to China as part of the New World Order.
Actually, the most prevalent theory is that China has so much extra cash they are simply investing in infrastructure. They can always find occupants. There are billions of those little ****ers over there.
And it wouldn't be the first time a country built buildings without actual occupants. Saudi Arabia built the Khobar Towers complex for housing of the Bedouins. The tent people would not move in to them. Rumor has it they didn't like living below someone else. A whole cultural thing having to do with the unclenliness of the bottom of feet. May be bull****. Don't know. But they do have a feet thing in that part of the world. And the apartment complexes were gorgeous. Marble everywhere. I lived in one for several months when the complexes were used for housing the US military during Desert Storm.
Rent-a-City?

Interesting. But they sure ain't building 'em for nothing. Might have something to do with power plants(building cities for workers, just like Chernobyl), or just new cities that will be "opened" later.
E: 85Gallon made a good point. Maybe they are investing money in physical structures, since money's price is decreasing all the time, but estates prices aren't...

I agree that the cities could be a good investment for them. I've also been reading that China is profiting by extracting natural resources from these lands and shipping them back home. And also that by building in these other countries, China is also nurturing better relationships with other governments and their citizens in the process and providing jobs. China looks to be stepping it up to (if they aren't already) become a/the world power.

I was thinking it's a shelter for the time when The Virus is unleashed, and zombies are everywhere. Now there are "chosen ones" that will live on those cities all around China, and after every living person is dead, they will start reproducing, and China will conquer the earth, and become the real super power. Of course the Virus is created by Chinese government.

Not a big deal really. the judge made a stupid decision, as pointed out in the article, there is a lot of prior art from various companies long before Apple's touch system. It may takes years fighting it out in court, but almost all of this is certain to get overturned in the end as companies who fought each other before will band together to fight this.

Not sure how it turned out in the end, but a satellite was launched and had a malfunction. It was to be used bt Dish Network but the orbit wasn't high enough. So the company that owned the satellite was going to use the engines to push it around the moon. Thus using the gravitational field of the moon to slingshot it into a higher orbit. There was not enough fuel on board to directly move it into a higher orbit.
Well guess what? Boeing owned the patent on the procedure. This is ****ing physics for christ's sake. And Boeing claimed ownership of the moon's gravity field. At one point the satellite gave up because Boeing was extorting them to drop a lawsuit. Not sure if they ever worked things out. Boeing refused to let the company use the patent because the company was suing Boeing on other matters and would only allow the procedure if the company dropped the suit.

As a brilliant comedian by the name of Lee Evans once said, "They've had touch screen technology for years. Just go down to the over night garage at 2 in the morning and see all the pissheads tapping on the glass asking for ginsters." The patent obviously belongs to all the world's pissheads :')

Apple Won :(

I can't believe this...
Apple has WON BIG in the Apple/Samsung IP lawsuit. The judge basically gave everything Apple wanted. Samsung was found to be infringing several of Apple's patents and designs. In addition, Samsung now has to pay Apple over $1 Billion. Samsung lost completely. Apple was found to be infringing ZERO ZERO ZERO patents of Samsung which is quite surprising.
It gets worse though.. Samsung (and probally every Android maker soon) will now have to pay Licensing Fees to Apple which would result in higher prices for Android. However, Apple could decide not to License their technology which would mean that Android would have to be stripped of many of its best features.

The U.S really needs some better judges and EYES TOO.
Samsung's phone look NOTHING like Apple's iPhone.
without prejudice and bias samsung SGS2 does look like a larger iphone,
i'm an android fan and will never have a apple device except my former iphone 2g,
but just look at it
Yup, just look at this:
But the main problem here is the patent system. Not Apple's or Samsung's. Why on earth did they grant Apple these obvious patents like bounce and pinch to zoom? It's a [email protected] joke.
Whatevs, apple is supposed to be the Hallmark of capitalism in America, yet apple tries to hamper it's competition by throwing random lawsuits about what should be basic smart phone functions, and yes the iPhone is a smart phone, and Mac computers are computers, Cuz I know all lot of Mac owners think their electronic devices are some ordained object thrown down by God from the heavens and their device cannot be categorized under the names of other electronic devices, silly

I like what one of Samsung's lawyers said as some point during the case...
"How can you hold a patent on a rectangular device with rounded corners?"
Sent from your mom.
From a patent attorney on another forum.
"This case will absolutely be tossed out on appeal. in their infinite wisdom, samsung's attorneys didn't bother to challenge apple's patents on the basis of not being directed to statutory subject matter. (oh, hi, forgot to mention, most simple software patents, the kind you hate, are now actually no longer patentable due to some recent cases).
The CAFC (patent appeal court) will raise the issue, toss out apple's patents."
This case is far from over. This will continue for many years to come. Nothing is decided yet, even with this verdict.

The thing is though, the Jury isn't there to judge the merit of the patents in question, just whether they have been infringed. These kinds of arguments come up a lot in "Jury Nullification" but for the most part the Jury was almost certainly told not to judge anything but whether the "patents" have been infringed upon.
Ok, but there is also the same court case in Korea, in which Samsung won, and Apple has to pay them for patent infringement. It really rises the question if this is really important or are they (both) trying to prove a stupid point?
Of course everyone uses ideas from other people but change it and imporve upon it (just like most of our ROMs are actually stock ROMs and we build upon them). I am against blatant copies but there has to be drawn a line beacuse what next? I won't be able buy a phone that isn't Apple's, because no one can use a candybar form of a phone?

Ive read that they were to judge if the patents were legitimate, and if so, were they willingly infringed.

Samsung is Evil

I stood behind Samsung when Apple bringing unjust charges on against them. I thought Samsung was the defender of Android and the truth but I was WRONG.
Recently, I learned that Samsung promised to take a blogger to the IFA as an independent reporter. This means that the blogger could basically cover whatever he wanted. However, Samsung LIED to him. He was taken to the IFA but he was only allowed to demonstrate Samsung products to the press. He was not actually able to review any products and instead was treated as a Samsung employee.
They even told him that if he doesn't do what he is told then Samsung will leave him in this foreign country. EVIL!!!
Don't believe me? Take a look at the source:
Samsung is Evil
Scratch that. It's definitely true, however,
Behavior such as Samsung’s is not uncommon in the world of tech coverage. It’s perhaps considered more normal in some parts of the world, but even we here at TNW are regularly offered to have our travel and accommodations covered in hopes that we’ll write about a specific brand during our overall coverage of an event.

Ok I guess did exaggerate a bit!
However, it is still unacceptable for Samsung to lie to him and then threaten him to leave him in Berlin where the IFA was hosted.
Sounds more like the Blogger was trying to catch a free round trip to IFA on Samsung's dime without offering anything to them in return. I am waiting for Samsung to chime in (they will) and hear both sides. Then I'm waiting for the inevitable leak of emails or call records or whatever. Then once I know the actual story I will have an opinion.

It seemed too good to be true.. but still Samsung should have been more clear of what they expected from the blogger.
This is what happens when you agree with the terms and conditions and choose to ignore them after you've signed. Don't expect Samsung to hold their word when you don't.
(I'm assuming there were some papers that needed to be signed {that you didn't read}. Samsung is after all a multi billion dollar corporation)

However, it still unethical when you are knowingly trying to scam a person (sort of a scam.. I guess? ..don't know exactly what to call it)

What is unethical about somebody paying for your trip and lodging and expecting something in return? Samsung has no obligation to pay for bloggers to travel to big events.

Well.. its cause its not what he was expecting. He did not get to review the IFA. He was just showing Samsung products to the press... under a threat.
What I am asking is that...
Is it wrong to expect Samsung to tell him straight up.."we want you to show off our products..not review the IFA"?
Instead..Samsung lied to him.
I don't see anything unreasonable about Samsung saying

It's not nice, but according to the article it's a pretty common practice for Handset makers to fly bloggers to events to cover their devices. Why would Samsung spend their money to help other gadgets get publicity?
I wouldn't waste a penny providing advertisements for my COMPETITORS.

lol @ Apple is very honest
How does Samsung lying help customers?
I am sorry but you guys need to realize what Samsung did was evil and they should be punished (I doubt this will happen)
Why would Samsung even fly bloggers for free? They're a company, a business. Of course it will benefit them, they will make it benefit them in some ways even if it is a little unethical. So in this way, all mobile phone manufacturers are evil? :/
I'm not sure what you thought it would be like. Vacation with free alcohol and prostitutes? No, you were brought in to do a job, and you failed big time. I would fire you on the spot.
Let's break it down:
- Samsung offers you a job as a promoter
- You accept it
- They cover the hotel and travel costs, which is a lot of money
- You refuse to do the job
- You want them to cover the flight home, which is a lot of money
I'm not sure you know what a promoter is or does. A promoter promotes a company's products. NOT reviewing and promoting the competitors' products. Also, Samsung took its time to hire you and on top of that spend money on you. Then you quit. You're the jerk here, not Samsung.
Not sure what part of Narnia you're from, but this is the real world. Welcome.
