Starnge :cyclops:
Probably the files are duplicated and counted. (Happened on my mp3 player)
check with another music player/file manager
Are you losing on some songs ?

100% i sholud see all my files if i try, but i want to work this method too cause this is the most comfortable..
And i don't have sd card reader
I think it's because the FAT filesystem, and if I remember correctly it has happened to me once too, the thing I did is that I moved music files to folders (album sorting).

Hi hope this is posted in the right area... But anyway for some reason whenever I connect my galaxy s to the pc with the mass storage option, once disconnected I end up with 3,4 or even 5 copys of each image on my sd card and internal storage... I'm running JPM at the moment.
I am getting this problem as well, and it only affects file on the external SD, and only picture files when inside the gallery.
Not sure why sometimes if I connect the phone to the pc or move the pictures into another folder it fixes the problem but it comes back everytime I connect back to the pc... I don't remember it happening in the old firmwares...
Do u unmount ur phone the propper way or do u just unplug it? Cause im on jpm and i always use unmount and i never had this problem

i had this problem before...
delete the folder.. DCIM\.thumbnails in internal/(external) sd
see how that goes
should work =)
cheers
I normally do it the unmount way, once done with using usb just to make sure. I deleted the thumbnails but if I use usb again it just recreates the thumbnails and I get even more pictures in the gallery... :/ Its a bit hit and miss. Thanks anyway
Same problem here... i've already tried everything. Now i have 4 repeated thumbs!! JIZZ
I'm using JPA firmware.
Hello all,
Can somebody confirm that I have a fail Galaxy Note with the following:
1. I cannot play files such as MKV and MP4 which placed directly to my external SD card
2. Those files (MKV/MP4) have to be imported by KIES to my Note to play
3. I have the same problem as describes as in this thread
Thanks!
Download Moboplayer from the market and you should be able to view the files
Didn't help.
I forgot to say: I only can play videofiles which are imported via KIES to internal SD card. Files imported to my external SD card I cannot play! This is so stupid. I think my Note is defect....can somebody confirm this....?
Try players. File size should be less than 4 GB of course.

If you can play MKV with Moboplayer and I couldn't, so my phone is defect, isn't it?

Your card may be defective or worse, a fake. Try testing another card or try loading a very small video file in your current card like maybe a 5-mb video first and see if that works.
i use dice player
mp4 play fine without any issues on the stock
how are you actually transferring the files? are you using usb mode or kies software?
There should not be any need for a 3rd party player for MKV's and MP4's what error does it give you when you play those files?
#4 is caused by a software issue which may or may not be fixed any time soon, some notes dont have this issue.
It gives an error that the format of the file isn't supported.
bet your not letting the files copy over fully and the files are not complete. Are you sure you are letting the mkvs fully finish copying they will take a while because they are normally in excess of 1 GB

If using USB storage, don't forget to do "Safely remove USB drive", because sometimes files don't get copied completely before you eject...
instead of using samsung kies, why not use the usb mode of the note?
a lot less hassle compared to kies.

Plus it's WAY quicker!
Maybe try downloading a video file with the internet app on your phone? You might have some strange filetype codecs

I've tried all the things you described. Even with the USB mode it doesn't work on the Note when I safely disconnect the USB connection. The same file I can play via the external SD card on my pc without any problems, so the file is 100% transfered.
If I convert a MKV to MP4, this MP4 can only plaid by the Note when I transfer via KIES. This is very weird!
My conclusion is that I have fail Note. I think you think the same way...!?
Hi,
I installed a new external SD card in my phone. Copied files from my Note on to it. After a day I see the folder gone and an new empty folder LOST.DIR in its place.
Is my SD card faulty? I used it for over 6 months in the SG2 without any problems.
Please help!

Thanks but I did read that thread before posting here and that thread made no sense to me.
My folder having Video files is gone and there is an empty LOST.DIR in its place.
I also do not use a Mac.
LOST.DIR is comparable to the recyclbe bin in windows.
if you do not permanently delete files they end up in LOST.DIR for a specific acmount of time. (that's the way it happens on my computer)
i don't think your Video Folder moved on its own to the LOST.DIR. Anyway, check in LOST.DIR - it should be there. Just move it outta there.
Hi I had this problem with a faulty SD card.. I'll never skimp on an SD card again. Its definitely branded ftw here

Hi,
Yesterday I had a folder called "VIDEO" with movie files in it on my SD Card. Today, there is just this folder called LOST.DIR which is empty !! There is no trace of the Video folder of the movie files anywhere.
My SD card is blank except for the empty folder LOST.DIR

Mine is a branded Transcend 4GB card.
Maybe it is bricked then. Do you have the possibility to cross check with another hardware, e.g laptop, card reader...
you can also try to format it, create a tempfile and check what happens.
what's the output of:
du /mnt/sdcard/external_sd ?
After some tests, I found this. If you have your phone connected to a PC (windows) to transfer files to the phone's externalSD directory, then use the "remove hardware option" without noticing there are TWO hardwares listed, then turn off USB from your phone, then unplug, you end up in this bad situation of a directory that's empty except for the lost.DIR (which is not accessible).
If you are careful to remove BOTH listed drives prior to turning off USB and unplugging the files should remain on your phone and be accessible. Your mileage may vary.
PS. I'm pretty certain the lost.dir is as dead as can be and can be safely deleted.

It may be dead, yeah, but why remove it when it'll be created by the system again anyway and it doesn't harm?
delete them all.
is garbage.

Some people have reported them as pushing 3 gigs. I don't have any problem getting rig of 3 gigs of wasted space. If it's 0 bytes? Leave it.
As i've said before - it is comparable to the trash bin in windows. You don't empty it, it takes space on your Disk. Empty it, its zero byte.

Hi, thanks for your efforts but I did not connect my phone to my PC for transfering the files. I cut / paste them from my phone usb drive to the external sd card with the ES File Explorer utility. The files were there for a day, then suddenly they disappeared.

Gotcha. I have also encountered this problem. I suspect the problem is similar.
Because you say the files lingered temporarily, diagnosing a fix or work around won't reveal instantaneously if it was successful. My thought is if it is first copied to another dir then flush the clipboard by copying something else (no need to paste it) then copy the file and paste it into the externalSD, then the origin of those won't be contingent on proper disconnection of the drive. I've made two test files: one as described above and one copied direct from USB. I renamed each to clearly identify which is which. Both files were intact a few minutes after unplugging the drive. I rebooted to see if there was any change. Both files remain. I'm not sure how i killed the files using the jump drive before. Perhaps I didn't wait for the phone to complete the process of disconnecting it. **** happens.
If you do find a consistent way that even definitely following proper procedures leads to lost.dir I would like to hear about it.
[NOTE] I will not test (and do not advise) intentionally disconnecting the drive prematurely as a test of that particular possibility. If lost.dir is not produced employing proper procedures all the way, it is of no use to damage your phone or your jump drive simply to investigate if that was the real cause.
"If it's not broken, DON'T FIX IT!"
edit: Next day both files remain.
OK guys I am in a bit of a Pickle here.
I plugged my phone into a PC in Bangkok to print out some PDFs containing flight information.
the pc started making .exe files on my phone with duplicate names of existing folders. e.g i have a folder called media on my phone so an exe called media.exe was created DCIM.exe and so on.
i plugged the phone into my laptop and ESET found a high amount of infiltrations over 400 which it cleaned by deleting. these were all the duplicate . exe files that it flagged as worms and Trojans.
now when i plug my phone into my laptop only certain files are visible. this is on the external SD and the phone itself. the files exist on the phone and SD card as i can see them all in in the explorer app such as all of my pictures and music camera photos etc, but alas the pc will not display these folders but when i click properties on the drive name in my computer it shows the free and used space correctly.
please do you have any suggestions ? my phone is rooted and i am using the alliance ROM. and do not want to brick this device just because of a stupid Asian virus.
thank you for any help you can offer
Alliance rom? JB or ICS?
Cuz in JB there is an issue with mtp of not displaying all files.
In ics, you can try to format your internal sd card and restore the data and check.
For this boot into recovery. Go to mounts and storage and mount usb storage. Connect to pc and this time you should see everything. If yes, copy all data to pc and format the storage using pc or format/emmc. Then put back the data. Reboot and check.
It is Alliance Rom ICS. so you mean format the phones SDCARD and the External SD card in recovery mode ?
yes either using the recovery option or using the drives displayed on the screen when connected to PC

What is the use?
If he formats it he will lose the files he is trying to access.
I have the same problem but I don't have any viruses. Just ask the photos from the last two months don't show when viewed from a Windows PC across a USB connection.
Hello!
For a few days now I've noticed that my device has been creating some weird files on my SD card. I have tried formatting the SD a few times but it still happens. If I do not delete these files more and more keep being created until there are hundreds of them in my SD. They seem to not take up any space at all, but it bothers me having to browse for files in the card. I have attached a screenshot from the root of my SD card with the suspicious files highlighted. If they are completely normal for an android device, I would like to know if there is a way to stop them, hide them or maybe have them appear inside a separate folder so I can keep my card organized.
Also, it may or may not be related, but whenever I'm listening to music (whether it'd be Play Music or another app) sometimes the phone stops playing it, as if I closed the app. I had Clean Master installed and it happened frequently until I figured out it was the source of the problem and uninstalled. It worked fine for a while but it started again. I believe it could be related, since I keep all of my music on the SD card.
Thank you in advance for any assistance provided!
Do you see these files only when phone is plugged to PC via USB or can you see them with ES-Explorer or similar Filemanger on the phone also?
I have a few of these files but they are only present when I check the SDcard on a Windows- PC, in ES or Rootexplorer they aren´t visible. So my opinion is that these files are created temporary for connecting.

The files also appear with file managing apps on the device as well. As you can see, the files have "reproduced" since I started this thread.

I also have the same. Just deleted 400 0byte files on my motog 2ndgen sd card (kitkat 4.4.4). I see them with es and when connected to PC.
