what do you get if you unzip the file?
If you get a .tar file, just put it in the PDA in odin and start.
Or maybe look for another .zip or .tar file of the JW4 kernel.

flash without extracting zip file in pda
Dear
When you download a kernel it's in 2 type one type is for flash with cwm and once for Odin if be zip is for cwm if be in tar extension is for Odin for Odin you should download tar and don't extract it. Just put it in pda section and finish

If the kernel is a zip file I would use SGS Kernel flasher app (on Google Play).
It backs up your current kernel before flashing.
if it is tar flash with odin.

I have recently been trying the Franco Kernel and the CF Kernel on ICS. I have had a Wifi issues with both of these, and I wanted to flash back my LQ2 stock kernel (zImage). I found this very difficult to do. I eventually used ChainFire's script, and replaced his kernel with the stock one, and flashed it from the PC.
My question is: I could have sworn that I have previously used mobile odin to flash a zImage, but now when I try it doesn't see any of the zip files, or zImages files on my card? is this correct, or should it be able to flash zImage files?
If I can't use Mobile Odin, is there an alternative for flashing zImage files that I can download from Google Play?

Flash the LQ2 .tar file instead of the zImage with Mobile Odin. So extract the downloaded .rar file once and it becomes a .tar file and put it on your sd card. mobile Odin doesn`t flash zImage, cwm manager does flash it.
If I do that won't it overwrite the whole rom. I only want the kernel. I would have to reinstall all my apps and settings. It takes me hours to get everything back the way it was.

It will flash only the kernel, also choose wipe cache when flashing. You will loose nothing.
If you want to flash stock kernel only then you can use PC Odin too.(you shud have kernel in .tar), you need to place kernel .tar file for selecting PDA in Odin.
Mobile odin can flash zImage file.
none of above said erase data.

Yes you can, i would take CF Root wich has root, busybox and cwm recovery. But it will increase the flash counter and shows a yellow triangle. With this method however no flash counter/triangle http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360.

Dr Ketan, I have a couple of questions about what you have said which I would be really grateful if you would clarify:
In the stock rom, when I drill into the .tar file I have a number of files e.g. cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin, and the zImage. Both Odin and Mobile Odin can only see the .tar file (which contains everything). If I extract the zImage, Odin and Mobile Odin cannot see it as an individual file, it has to be bundled up with the others in the .tar file.
If I use Odin to flash that file, it is the whole Rom, so won't it wipe my phone like a factory re-set?
When I try to use mobile Odin, you say I can flash a zImage file, but even though I have one on the SD card, it cannot see them. Mobile Odin just shows me all folders, and I cannot select an individual zImage file, or any zip files? I guess it can only see whole .tar files and not individual files?
Can you please advise me?
ok
now pc odin
here you can flash with tar only.
pc odin gives you option to flash separate modem and csc but not kernel if you select full Rom file.
but if you have kerenl file in tar file then you can flash it using pda in odin to flash kernel separately.
now in mobile odin.
you can flash kernel modem or csc individually with raw file or tar or zip.
dont know why you are getting error, otherwise it gives you option to glash zimage too.
just to add, in mobile odin you have not to select open file option but you hav to select kernel tab
then point it to zimage file.

Thank you my friend. your advice has really helped me. My issue in Mobile Odin was caused because I had renamed the zImage file to StockzImage (because I had some custom ones there with different names in the same directory. Mobile Odin was specifically looking for a file with the name zImage

I tried to change from .tar.md5 to .tar and then use 7zip or winrar.. NO WAY..

Hi friend, I found a guide searching in Google. You can follow this guide and instead of the mentioned firmware, you can use yours.
Here is the guide, hope it helps

Hi arys64
thanks for your reply
Unlukily that guide teach how to flash a classic firmware (pda+csc+pit).
I don't have these 3 files and instead I have a .tar.md5 file that I think has these files inside but at it's end it has the md5 code.
I don't know how to unzip it...
Thank you

Hello experts!
Before gifting my Galaxy Tab 8.9 (p7300) I wanted to fully erase my user data and files and flash a stock rom back, so I formatted it in CWM recovery mode.
After that I can only use download mode. When starting with power+volumedown I get two choices: but the recovery mode won't enter (when I press volumeup it blinks fast and do not enter).
The only communication I get to the tablet is with Odin in download mode, and nothing else.
Since then I have made many tryouts with files found on the web: flash pit file, bootloader, cwm recovery, stock recovery and there was no result at all.
I'm really sorry if the answer is in another thread, but I haven't found any solution after 3 days searching the we.
If you solve my problem, you'll get $20. Please help me, I'm deseperate.
Thanks a lot!
Renan
Do you have adb access? If so, can you copy a recovery image to the root directory of the sdcard and flash it via adb?

I have a stock ROM and CM9 here, but they're all in .zip format, suitable to flash in recovery mode, which I cannot enter.
I couldn't find any ROM in .tar or .md5 format as hotfile server is out, and I don't see how I could flash a ROM with ODIN in .zip format. Is it possible?

Yes I am well aware of that,
the link I gave you in the previous post is for Dev-Host mirror
for a Tar file to flash through Odin
but it is compressed in ZIP format
so you'll have to download it and unzip it using Winrar or 7-Zip
or any other similar Pc program
then you'll get these file :
P7300XXLQI_P7300XXLQ6_P7300GBLMP2_HOME.tar.md5
SS_DL.dll
ignore the .dll file and flash the tar.md5 file through odin and everything will be fine :fingers-crossed:

i want to flash a new rom and to do this i need to get the twrp recovery..
i downloaded to maclaw studio's twrp and when i tried to flash it with odin i saw that i cant flash it because its not tar.md5 file.. i've tried to convert the file to .tar and when i flashed it, it broke my galaxy.. i want to flash twrp 2.7.0.0 but im afraid that it will broke my phone:crying::crying:.. can somebody help my figure out how to convert that zip\img file and make it a tar.md5 so that i could flash my rom??
The zip file is used to flash it through recovery (e.g. CWM or TWRP). You'll need the Odin file. You can also find it on Maclaw's site. Next to most download links, you can also click 'Odin' which gives you the Odin package.

I followed everything via this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147852 and successfully flashed CWM to my GT-I8190.
The problem arises when I attempt to boot into recovery mode. Every time I attempt it, I am taken to the stock android recovery screen and not CWM. I've tried different versions of Odin... the touch version of CWM.. using a different computer... all to no avail.
I even downloaded Rom Manager thru Google Play and attempted to flash/update CWM from there (as it said it was, indeed, installed on my phone) but it wouldn't let me reboot the phone into recovery from Rom Manager - I imagine because I am not rooted.
I'm attempting to root my phone and flashing CWM is the first step. Like I said, the flash was, indeed, successful but the problem is that it always takes me into stock recovery instead of CWM.
Thanks in advanced, guys!
try another custom recovery, for example this one.
Wait until Odin says "success" and then reboot into recovery via Vol+ Home and Power

Same deal, xXPR0T0TYPEXx... I extract the .zip to find merely an image file.. I tried it with Odin anyway but Odin will not recognize it.
Hmmmmm.... I may have to go with vROOT if you tell me it's safe to use.
Another way of root is by flashing unsecure kernel. You can do it easily by Android Toolkit.
