Hello guys,
I was thinking about flashing CM9 kernal and then CM9 on my Galaxy Note N7000 stock ICS 'unsafe kernal' (by Chainfire Gotbrick app).
But when i started with the procedure I noticed all tutorials point to using a windows pc for flashing.
Being a Linux lover i dont want to go to that Windows for flashing with Odin.
My question....
Is it possible (or rather safe) to flash from a linux machine (particularly Backtrack 5r2) ?
If yes, will the same odin work as the tool opens on my machine without issue?
I would be really disappointed if the tool used to flash linux based phones is not available to use on linux. :crying:
Hi, I'm linux user too. Here is my guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551649
You want Heimdall.
help
Guys i want to shift from Windows 7 to backtrack OS (linux)
can i install custom rom through Backtrack OS with same Odin flash player ..?
if not pls tell which software i need to downloads to flash the custom rom ..?

I'm not really sure of the differences between the Samsung fascinate and this t-mobile galaxy tab i bought but i am coming from an Evo 4g and normally i can format My SD, and do a full wipe, then install Rom from SD through either amons RA recovery or Clockwork, I've only had the tab about 4 days and I am ready to get to learning this system but from what i read to install OVERCOME 1.6 or later i need to use a windows pc which i do not have access to. I Purchased the T mobile GSM galaxy tab from someone else( and its using the sgh-t849 firmware and not the p1000 ? little confusing there, also i planned on unlocking the GSM to work with AT&T and if possible to make phone calls on it,
when i purchased it from a guy it was already rooted, when i ran the bootloader patch i get :
Device SGH-T849
t-mobile galaxy tab
Bootloaders - YOU ARE SAFE!
Signed: none
Not signed: PBL,SBL.SBL_backup, Kernel
Assessment: can flash anything
next i'm told to do the Stock Safe jmk zip and flash it with some weird utility called ODIN3.exe which as the name suggest is a pc program, i only use UNIX based Mac's and the occasional Linux Flavor of the month from one of my multiboot linux flash stcks, is there an alternative to this for macs? is there no way to just flash a file in recovery? without using some pc program? or running some vmware based tool like virtual box? also i can run ABD through Ecliped but im not really knowledgeable about it. PLEASE HELP ME! thanks
Heimdall is available for osx, but if you have clockwork recovery mod installed it's simpler to use that.

I have mac also and it's intel based . I installed windows on one small partition ( bootcamp ) just for some games and flashing roms on tablets and phones . You can install windows on bootcamp ( but you will also need original mac os dvd for drivers ) that came with your mac or run Parallels Desktop software on your mac and install virtual windows . Don't bother with vmware . parallel Desktops is shareware but you can find it on warez ( I did ) can't share link here ... than use ODIN . Or just run hemdall on your mac
?
im a little confused? are you saying i can install without using odin? when i try skipping the steps that involve using odin and try to install from the sd through clockwork i get
E:Failed to verify whole-file signature

going to try installing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265
any suggestions welcome

argh I agree mate . Oh .. about heimdall ... I don't know if it works on samsung galaxy tab . I used heimdall on my galaxy s ( it is designed for it ) and CWM is tricky to install . I followed this guide http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/29/how-to-flash-a-custom-recovery-image-on-the-samsung-galaxy-tab/
but I am sorry to say without windows you are s.c.r.e.w.e.d.
I don't like windows one bit but I have it just for few things , and when I am done I go wash my hands and flush my eyes with cleareye
rgr
i have a WIN7AIO corp image on a usb but its at work, ill just try to wait and use the windows method... i didn't think installing roms on this tab would be so much more difficult than on my EVO ill get it on there though, oh does anyone know if ill be able to make calls with my Tmobile galaxy tab with an AT&T sim? i was reading
it seems possible but does it work correctly on 3g?

Well, there is a catch: you need the CWM version of whatever you want to flash. For example look at the Overcome thread, it has files for Odin and files for CWM... separate files.

Hello, I'm sorry .. I've searched a lot before opening this thread but I didn't find what I need.
First: I downloaded a new stock firmware for my region (Egypt - April 2012) but I couldn't flash it because I'm using Ubuntu Linux. Stock needs Odin, and Odin needs ****ty Windows!
Second: No way to flash stock firmware directly from Linux for our SGM. Heimdall isn't compatible, Running Odin via Wine/VM can brick my phone because the USB Drivers in Linux different from the others in Windows, I can't buy Odin for Mobile (and I don't know if it support our device), CWM recovery cannot flash stock ROMs (but it can flash stock-based modded ROMs).
Finally: I discovered that I can use the same way of modding (Stock-Based ROMs) to Make it CWM Flashable so I can use it without passing with windows. The problem that I can't find a Guide to put my foot in the start of the way!
All Modding Guides are for Custom ROMs (or For other Models Stock ROMs).
Should I use a Kitchen Like dsixda to ease the process? Should I replace the Kernel? Is there some files must be changed??
Regards,
Anass Ahmed.

Hi. First of all u must extract a stock rom from system.rfs and keep boot.img .... Next, u should use dsixda kitchen to make a flashable zip: (i think you are able to configure it)
And just select working folder and build your rom i think u don't need to edit kernel... But, sorry for question: why u don't use a custom rom?? Or try minimod x that is a stock rom very fast?? Just my opinion hope i helped you... Give me news about it!!

I said that I want to use it for my region (Egypt). Many of Stock-Based ROMs here don't include Arabic language and if included it have wrong letter connecting and some other issues. So I decided to flash stock for my region then modify it to suite my needs and simulate stock based ROMs here.
Thank you for your help!

Don't you have a friend who has a Windows PC? If I were you, I would ask a friend to let me use his/her Windows PC for 15 mins to flash the latest egypt stock rom rather than messing the whole package, deodexing it and what not..
with the help of make ISO extract system.rfs then copy it the content to a working directory copy boot.img and create a flashable.zip

OK, I can mount System.rfs by "mount" command. then I will copy it to "stock_based" directory, and start dsixda kitchen to Deodex it, Root it, install busybox and so on.
Where do I copy boot.img to? How to make it flashable.zip? via dsixda kitchen?
Sorry for my bad English .. and Thanks for your helping.

note:- you cannot flash any stock rom over cm7, miui rom it will not boot
download emanon rom extract it to somewhere delete the system folder of emanon rom and copy there the system folder of the stock rom. replace the boot.img of emanon rom with the stock one
go to meta-inf and delete all the three cert files if available and flash with cwm recovery
if you want to create update package manually go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633025

I know, I will use MoRe 1.4.
this information Exactly what I need, and this topic is very important for me. Why didn't you add it to your signature?!
Why do I delete cert files, will the kitchen add them or what?
Another Question: do I need to deodex Stock or MoRe before beginning the process? and why don't you write a tutorial for customising Stock ROMs and adding some cool stuff (toggles, transparency, battery icons and so on)??
Thank you very much.

cert files contains the md5sum of the package which have been changed by doing all this that's why we are deleting it kitchen will not install cert files they will be installed while signing packages
remember more rom is related with nothing
odex apks are great due to ram consumption, but deodex apks can be installed just be copying (odexed needs to be flashed) choice is yours
I didn't written any tut about adding stuff to rom because I myself don't how to add

Hello.
my phone currently have stock ICS LPY. i want to use latest ALBA release. the release has a new bootloader that I need to update with odin. I tried using mobile odin. when I chose the rom file it added it under category param and I flashed it. now before I update my rom to the alba rom how do I know if it worked? I mean.. I googled and found several old posts that say that people should not update bootloader with mobile odin.
is it still the case? I must use a mobile odin on a regular pc ?
my phone works.. does it mean that I didn't break anything ?
I'm asking because I don't have a windows machine available and i really don't know how to even properly compile and execute the Heimdall frontend and I never even used it so I prefer to ask here first.
thank you!

Hello all !
I'm new to Ace. My friend just donated it to me.
After seeing the Ace for a while, i realized it's still Froyo (2.2.1). I want to upgrade it, but i use Ubuntu (Odin can't flash firmware on Ubuntu with Wine).
But, after that i remembered Heimdall, that i use to flash my Galaxy SII.
Now, the question is, does Ace supports Heimdall and vice versa ?

Hi!
For our Ace Odin and other programms are normally just used to flash stock ROMs. In all threads of custom ROMs you will find zip files which should be flashed in CWM 5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291327 It is much easier. But you have to do all wipes on your own.
Ace doesn't support heimdall. Go to a near by service center to get the latest firmware on your ace.

Yeah, i know about Odin. I know about stock ROM since i already own Galaxy Mini, Young, and Nexus 4. Odin can't detect phone in Ubuntu (since Wine doesn't implement USB Detecting). Will go to SSC to upgrade my firmware.

If you want a stock ROM, update using Kies. EDIT: Saw that you are using Ubuntu. Forget this.
That worked for me.
However, I recommend trying a custom ROM. That will give you Android 4.2.2 and a faster phone. Try one of these: EDIT: You won't need a computer for that.

Hi there.
Is there a simple guide for flashing the phone from Ubuntu Linux, using for example Heimdall?
Also, what's the safest ROM in terms for it not containing malware, risky security choices etc.?
Thanks,
Morten
