I am a Captivate owner frustrated with the lack of Froyo 2.2 for the stock phone. I live in California, and you're liable to be ticketed if you drive with the phone in your hand. BlueTooth Voice Dial is a must as far as I am concerned.
OK, you can get ROMs hacked from the I9000 that have it, but the phone they're based on doesn't have the A1026 (Audience) noise cancellation chip, thus there's no support for noise cancellation which works respectably well in the stock Captivate.
Basically, you can get BTVD or noise cancellation, but not both in any one ROM as far as I can see. Even the Canadian Rogers Froyo release doesn't seem to contain a working BTVD ROM.
I am speculating that this might be the reason for the delay in AT&T's release of Froyo. Anyone want to confirm or deny that notion?
I feel the same way. I just need to make sure the leaked 2.2 from at&t does and I think i"ll be flashing to that.
The answer is very simple: custom ROMs are largely based on existing Samsung ROMs, official or leaked. No one is building ROM from scratch. So far, the only 2.2.1 ROMs leaked are i9000 ROMs. The only Captivate ROMs out there are 2.2 based which BT Voice Dial does not work. Only 2.2.1 ROMs can do BT Voice Dial.
That's way I always LOL at ppl's claim: who need official Froyo ROM from AT&T, we have custom ROMs here. Without official ROMs, you get zip for custom ROM.
There are also apps on the market that do the same thing on any version.
If I can't get Voice Dial along with the noise cancellation there really is no point updating for me.
Same thing as what?
Don't mean to be hypercritical, but the same thing as what? Noise cancellation, or voice dial over bluetooth? I've tried a bunch of ways to get voice dial over bluetooth with various apps, but it wasn't happening for me. The phone can voice dial from the speakermike but not through the headset. I'm not aware of any noise cancellation apps.

Aha!
Thanks, knowing that the 2.2.1 ROM version is required helps.
Wonder what AT&T is going to release, 2.2 or 2.2.1...
And, yeah, I must admit to getting a little fed up with people who've been saying that the custom ROMs currently available solve all the problems with the phone. They don't.

2.2 ain't gonna cut it
Looks like we're not going to be happy with a 2.2 release. It had better be 2.2.1.

is the noise cancellation really that important? ive had some phones that it makes things worse.. choppy, cuts in and out.
or there are bt headsets with built-in noise cancellation if you really must have both.

People dont just say it. ITS AN ADVERTIZED FEATURE. even with the newest update. it dont work for me either.
Voice Search is great for inputting text into messages, getting directions and several other things. but still need voice DIALER to do this right.
The i9000 ROMs are better. And with voodoo sound this no longer is valid.

It only works on speakerphone, AND you have to export your contacts to gmail and then sync them with your phone. THEN you can touch the mike icon and say Dial John Smith at Home, and it will go.
To export, go to Contacts, then menu, then export. Then with USB set to mass storage, copy the VCD file to your computer (or just treat it like an extra drive) and export it to gmail after logging into Gmail on your pc. Then sync via the phone. That will give you a fairly workable solution, as long as your phone is out in the open. It bugs me, because I often walk my dogs with a headset and the phone in a holster. I don't want to have to pull the phone out of the holster to make the call. It's much easier to tap the headset and use voice commands.

Noise Cancellation is important to me
Noise cancellation is really important if you're trying to use your phone in a restaurant or bar. Of course, even then, it may not work if the background noise is overwhelming. Still it's a significant help. The noise cancellation built into the Captivate is actually much better than that of most phones.
Yes, headsets can handle the noise cancellation, and I have an excellent one for the job. While that's fine for driving, I don't always want to be wearing the thing. It's BIG. Only the big ones (Blue Parrot) are really worth anything for NC.
See post #13 in this thread for getting Voice Dialing to work with a stock phone. It's speakerphone only, but you can use it with a headset. The call will go through the headset once the call's been connected.

I've tried vlingo and choice dialer, and they BOTH tell you you need 2.2 to do voice dial over bluetooth.
Since there's no native voice dial through bluetooth till 2.2.1, I am wondering still what specific application you are referring to that will accomplish that with a Captivate on 2.1??

I was answering the other guy...... Those 2 features are want I want working. I've tried vlingo myself.... doesn't work.
What is no longer valid, and why do you say that?
Um, when chiming in, in the middle of a thread, with no quoted post to clarify what you're responding to, it would be helpful to make your point more clearly.

I hope you guys get what I mean. I used to have a Samsung Android and it shakes when calls are established. It didn't shake when I was waiting for the other side to pick up the call but it shook once at the exact moment when the other side was picking up the phone. Such a feature delays the contact between my head and the phone. Some people told me that the radiation is strong when the phone is on the 'calling' status. I don't know if this is true so I'd rather believe it.
Is there a setting in our LG Optimus Black for enabling such a feature?
Are you on a stock ROM? If yes, em sure that its not available via stock ROM but maybe there is some app out there that can work for you.
If you are on CynogenMod 7, Yes you have that function built-into the ROM. Look into settings, call settings, vibrate on answer

Thank you for your reply. I have the option you mentioned checked, by default. It does not variate when a call is answered. Does it work for you?
Yes mine works. I am not sure if it has something to do with haptic feedback or not but you should try to enable it too, maybe that helps.
Maybe you can use an app called CallVibrate
Works exactly the way you want on my OB.
Hope that helps.
I get one Samsung GT-P7300 when I insert SIM card inside I get 3G networks
and everything is OK.
But I can't make or receive Voice calls.
Is there chance to install something or change my ROM to push My Tablet to make normal voice calls, as we can with Galaxy 7(P1000)
Thanks in advanced
from reading a ton of posts in this forum, my impression is that nobody managed to do that so far.
You could always use GrooVe IP with google voice.
At the moment don't believe it can be done. However, you have options such as Viber and others that can do some sort of call.

Is there any possibilities in future that ICS may be able to have gsm phone function?
It may depend on if P7300 has gsm voice build-in hardware...
Anybody try to disect the phone apk from galaxy tab 7 and see whats what
I really don't see the need for voice calls on a tablet? Only situation I could think of is in the car when using it as a navigation system?

I believe the hardware is capable of making voice calls because the early test units had this capability. Of course they did have a sdcard also, so it is possible that the radio hardware was also changed. But I believe it's disabled in baseband or our baseband is just missing this functionality.
And i also have a question, are GT8.9 and GT10.1 using the same radio hardware? I believe i have read somewhere that they do, but i can't find this information anymore. If they are, then we could try P7500 KK4 baseband as it is reported that it has made voice calls.
Phone calls
Hey poisike,
I've tried the latest version of your ICS Alpha 1 release for the 3G Tablet, and in fact, i can :
Receive SMS
Send SMS (with a warning "not sent" as you mentionned)
Receive phone calls (with or without headset... it's working)
I can't make phone calls so far. It says "call ended" as soon as I hit the green handset button.
Not sure if it helps the author of this thread, because going to Alpha releases for someone you want to stay in contact might not be a good idea. But i wanted to let Poisike know that his last release was on the right track !
@Poisike : Sorry, i'm new to this forum, so i can't post yet in Android Dev threads
Wow, it's a very good news that ICS Alpha 1 release for the GT8.9 3G version can receive phone calls over GSM. It may mean that make a phone call is doable.
can you share the link of ICS alpha where incoming calls work?

This one :

Also just to be clear, it's an Alpha release... So you may have the incoming phone call working, but then be disapointed because Camera is not working or something else.

Good find, thanks! I actually tried it when i built the rom and it didn't work. It is not a priority for me at the moment, so i didn't test it more. Now i realised i had a wrong sim card in so i called the wrong number.
I installed the ROM but nothing not receive calls ... please help ...
I have also done so reset date. no. By calling the number to be fast busy ...
For the rest there are always the same video problems in the rotation. Wifi and 3G are OK. Opening speed OK. I miss GSM calls ... this ROM would be just the TOP with the GSM CALLS!

Are you sure your SIM card can receive call or is it a data only subscription that you have ? Because i can't receive call on my Data only SIM card... only if I put my GSM SIM from my phone
here is how I set it up.
I've the ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.6.
-Reboot in recovery
-Wipe menu, wipe all data
-Install Rom from zip + wipe
-Install GoogleApps from zip
Nothing I have followed your instructions. My gtab 8.9 has the following characteristics:
Recovery v.5.1.2.6-CWM (I do not think is a problem to run wipe and install with this version)
I put sim in the phone and then work is also enabled with calls.
Give me a hand please ...

I was running on stock deodexed 4.4.4, than i made factory restart and now i am running on Criskelo rom, 4.4.4 aswell. Still the same.
I even turn the noise suppresion in call menu aswell, didnt make a difference.

On Stock Rom yes, but i have this issue just with 4.4.4. i guess.

Try a different sim card and make a call and report back

You may also try if you can make any different result with your device microphone when calling if you change any of voice settings in "settings/calling settings". There are atleast microphone noice canceling, equalizer, speaker volume increasing and slow speaking. Maybe hardware issue thou.
I tried to change everything. But i can hear it great on Skype And microphone test software, so not sure if it is hardware issue :-/
I just tried to call with my loud settings (like from main speaker) my voice was clear again. But when switching back it did the same.
I have this problem since i tried for the 5th time to call with it through the rain.
Now, every program the mic is dissorted. Even the sony service menu. Brought it my service provider for a repair/replace, but after a few weeks they told me the phone has water damage??? HOW the hell, i am not stupid, knowing to close the lids.
Now waiting for the parts of microphone hardware. Hopefully this will fix the problem.
So are you going to replace it by yourself? My voice is service menu is pure, even on skype calls and stuff like that, so i hope its not hardware related :-/
Problem fixed. I had removed the antidust cover of microphone and my voice is clear again.
