ok i just got in my adapter to use on my tilt and when i plug it in with some headphone, i get nothing.. still sound comes out the speaker of the phone and not through the headphones.. do i need to be doing something to route it over or does it automatically spose to..
Which adapter did you get? It should route all sound straight to earphones just like any earphone plugin would.

i think you might have acquired a converter that works for MOTOROLA devices...i made the same mistake initially so i guess it must be a common misconception
if you look at the mini usb part of the adapter, you will notice it is shaped like a trapezoid...point it into your eyes so you can see the little contact pins inside.
with the wide side of the trapezoid along the top and the narrow side of the trapezoid along the bottom, the "correct" adapter would have pins along the narrow side while the motorola style adapter would have pins along the wide side of the trapezoid.
PS: i'm sorry the reader may have to use a dictionary and recall their geometry lessons to interpret my post but i didn't feel like making a diagram or searching for a picture...

If you're planning on keeping the seido adapter, just be sure to Baby your usb prong brother. I was using the seido adapter for around a year and a half with mixed results as most of the time I'd have to fiddle with it to stay connected which was the Good part. Recently upon pulling out the adapter it decided to take my usb prong with it since it's so damn tight which essentially circumcised and killed my kaiser which was a very Happy ****ing day for me. You might be better off getting a set of stereo bluetooth earphones as it'd be a lot safer...
I have been tinkering with the Slacker G2 dock and have modified it to output audio through one of the ports. This involves soldering on very small traces and is not something that is easy to do.
Just as a general warning, I am not responsible for any damage that could result from this guide.
On the bottom of the circuit board solder a jumper wire between the +5v pin on the USB connector and the point shown in my picture.
On the top remove the components from the board, i removed them all, this is to keep the new audio connection from feeding back into the dock port on the streak.
On the top run a jumper from pin 10 to any Ground point on the board, i picked one a that was easy to get to.
Then run a jumper from pin 8 to the now empty solder point next to the connector marked C4
Then run a jumper from the solder point just under the R1 label to the point next to the connector marked C5
Congratulations your G2 Dock now has audio out, and as an added bonus it will charge your Streak twice as fast. Also make sure that your power source is able to supply a minimum of 1A or 1000mA of power.
I think this mod needed it's own thread, well done m8.
Question, is the 5v jumper cable underneath all you need to fit to increase charging capacity? I'm not too bothered about audio.
/edit my spelling...

Cheers, thanks
Did the +5v pin on the USB connector to get dock mode but now no audio from phone even if I disable speaker out in dock settings. Alarm is useless now, is that expected?
Choose the option to enable speaker output, because its the phone speaker not the dock speaker.

Thanks for the hint. I enabled speaker output and it works but I had to undock and redock for the new setting to kick-in.
I got two of these docks as they are the only thing I could find (because dell don't want to sell accessories in Australia) so I'll give your mod a go to get the audio working.
Thanks heaps

Try here - I have bought from this seller and would recommend her.
Agreed, I bought 2 (in case I messed one up) and it works great.
Further modification
After applying the 5v USB modification my Streak charges at twice the speed. The only problem was that it would not switch to dock mode without pressing down firmly.
Corrected the issue by removing more plastic around the PDMI connector and re-adjusted the angle so more is exposed. Now the Dell Streak docks without much effort.
Hey guys is it possible to dock the dell streak when its in a TPU style case? If not, does it look easy to mod to accept a dell streak + case? Also, does the audio out provide stereo sound? Thanks

The G2 dock can be modified by removing the plastic arround the port to accept most cases, in order to get any audio out of the dock you must do the mod to the pinouts to get stereo out.

I'm confused. The add for the dock claims its got audio-out and it comes with 2 different audio cables. Why does it need a modification for audio out?

The G2 uses different pins to control this output than the standard. This modification bypasses all that and makes it correct for the streak.
HDMI
Hey guys does this Slacker Dock also give us the ability to use HDMI from the Streak to say a Plasma TV...
I can see on the pick that it has an output but there is no mention of it by any if you in thread.

Nope, to get HDMI out you need to get the $69.99 dock from Dell.

The universal moto dock is overpriced, and also crappy. I loved the D1/D2/X2 docks. This universal one they're doing now annoys me.

Was debating getting one but I'd figure I'd try it out first. Do they have these in the Verizon showrooms?
verizonwireless.com has the D4 car mount which I already ordered and will give an update as to its quality and functionality when it arrives. They have it for $39.99 which is actually cheaper than past docks so I am pretty content with that.
Also, Best Buy is carrying the Zagg screen shields for about $20 which is not bad if you want something really pro to protect that gorilla glass. It fits well and is the only one I have seen that is specifically designed for the D4 as of right now.
As far as the dock goes it seems pretty solid I bought it on release day. pure gear also has has some accessories for the D4. I ordered the case/holster and the screen sheild

I would not recommend the $40 VZW D4 car mount. I bought it yesterday thinking it was the same as the $60 mount in the Motorola Store/Amazon (it's not) and returned it today. The VZW mount does not come with a power cable/charger and the 3.5mm jack needs to be plugged in every time you dock your phone to get audio from your car speakers, whereas the $60 mount has a 2-in-1 cable that connects both power and audio via USB. Definitely worth the extra 20 bucks IMHO.

I bought the Power and protection package, the vehicle navigation dock, the HD Station, and the Lapdock 500 when I got the droid 4 - so I can answer questions on these items, if anyone has any.
Otter Box
The otterrbox case is now available on Ebay and probably all over by next week
Skinomi has their techskin available for the D4. I was much happier than the ZAGG, one the warranty is great, they replace for a nominal fee regardless of reason, two) cheaper for the same quality, three) I like the feel of the tech skin better.
I also bought the lapdock100 and love it. Nice quality and really gives me laptop light functionality. It can't/won't replace a laptop or desktop but makes things easier when trying to pump out some work emails or just general browsing.
i bought the holster clip from verizon for the phone, but it's too bulky, anyone see a smaller one, similar to the OG droid's?
anyone found just a simple charging cradle/dock yet? i really have no need for the HD dock bedside.
The $60 moto dock would be worthwhile if my car had a USB connection in the head unit but it doesn't so using my old car charger to plug it in doesn't really make a big difference to me.
I can say that I had a few connection issues with it, though. I think it was the CLA>USB adapter that I was using. I switched to a regular CLA with a micro USB built in and it seems to be working fine now.
I don't really have any issues with the quality of the dock but as previously stated, it doesn't come with a power cord which is a bit of a rip-off.

Considering the MOTO car dock, even though it would be a $30 difference because of my company discount. Are you able to run other apps while in car dock mode? I'm thinking mainly of Trapster, since I have a few long road trips coming up this spring/summer...

Yes and no. The Car Home app does have a place for you to add a custom shortcut to an app, but only two or three I think. I rooted my phone and froze the Car Home app so the phone stays on the normal home screen and retains its full functionality when docked...so I'd recommend doing that.
I'm surprisingly happy with the Motorola dock and car mount for the Droid 4. I got both from Amazon.
Motorola HD Dock: Really impressed how it can be used for phones, tables, and has an adjustable insert if you have a protective case on the phone. This particular "version" of the dock did come with a power cord, something I see complained about heavily, and now I've got a spare charger. When docking, you can put it into a special bedside mode (clock, alarm, weather, time, etc), an office mode (messaging, calls, etc), or just charge. The connections on the bottom, as well as the backplate, are completely adjustable making usable for many different models. I haven't tried any of the HDMI out stuff yet because I don't have a cable.
Motorola Vehicle Mount: Very solid construction, mountable on either your window or dash. Also has an insert to allow for the phone to fit with or without a protective case. This "version" came with the charging/audio cable (not all do, apparently) and the plug has 2 USB connections for charging 2 things at once. The phone goes into a Car Mode while in the dock (large buttons, you can see it in the picture). You can Menu > Exit out of that to get to your normal home screens, but hitting the home button takes you back to the car mode interface.
Even though these are not the cheapest options out there, for the first time I feel like I'm getting something of value for the price, as opposed to OEM crap.
Hm, I had the option to buy a few of these with the phone and I skipped them. But now I find that the phone doesn't charge with my current DC-USB adapter and I have to buy a new adapter anyway. So annoying. Even with "standardized" USB ports they're still screwing this up.
On a side note, I'm also looking for screen protectors. Any recommendations on anti-glare vs other choices?
Thanks. I should have the Moto Vehicle Dock by Wednesday. Looking forward to trying it out.

the power adapter not working is probably a voltage issue, what does your DC-USB adapter put out? if its lower than what the D4 consumes, its not going to charge it.
as for screen protectors... i personally do not see the point. never had one on my OG or my DX and neither have any scratches on them.
No, not a voltage issue. Just that the old adapter was too dumb. (Dumb ones simply provide +5V on the USB power lines. Lots of devices these days require an actual USB protocol handshake before they will turn on their charge circuits. My Motorola KRZR was the first phone I had like this. My Sony MiniDisc too.)
I bought a couple of new ones, they work fine. http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=228256702&sellerid=14803920
I now have the LapDock500 too, my work paid for that. Haven't played with it much. It feels quite heavy for a 14" laptop. And I need to write a custom rule for Droidwall, to allow the webtop software to have network access. Right now with Droidwall enabled I can't make it do much at all.
I use an exogear generic mount in the car with an old motorola droid 1 charging cord. I froze motorola's horrible excuse for a car home and replaced it with the stock one. When I get in the car, I just clip my phone in, connect the charger, and click the car home icon. I have it set up with exactly the apps I want, including a screen with Pandora, Grooveshark, and my equalizer app, and another screen with short cuts to navigate to my apartment and home.

Sony's car dock is a joke - it's a generic dock for all their phones, may as well just buy some equally crappy thing off ebay for a pittance.
I'm looking for a proper dock with charging and audio-out built in. Having to plug and unplug USB and headphone jacks every time you dock and undock your phone is ridiculous. In fact, I don't know if I can commit to buying the Xperia Z without one.
Yes I am with you need a car dock with charger.

Wonder if you could take the desktop cradle, glue it onto your dash, then re solder some wires to get the car plug 12v... Seriously, it might be a way if Sony doesn't release one
I've considered modding the desk dock, would also require adding some sort of clip to hold it through bumps/whatever. Far from ideal though, and a fair bit of effort I'd prefer not to go to... :-/

Yeah, they're better than nothing I guess, but they always seem to use power cords that are moulded into the unit, and none of their stuff supports audio out.
Take a look at Samsung's car docks for their flagship phones as an example of how to do it right - microUSB input for charging (means you can take your power from whatever source you like, useful for eliminating ground loops), and a 3.5mm phono socket in case you want to connect to an AUX port on your head unit (because BT sucks).
EDIT: Oh, and particularly for the Xperia Z, a car mount that uses the dock connector - rather than USB - is extremely useful, because otherwise you've got to fiddle around opening the USB socket cover to connect a charger.

They seem to be stopping their good work though, all they seem to have for the s3/note 2 is a universal passive dock. The way they did it for the galaxy s 2 (i9100 version at least) was how all manufacturers should, best car dock I've owned by far.
I have a Motorola Atrix and the official car dock. It work like a charm and you can even remove a bracket to fit a cased phone in it. Now my Atrix is dead so yeah ...
Wondering why manufacturers don't all just release official docks.
any news here? Still no official dock, afaik, so has anyone heard of a third party dock for the z?

The idea of modding a normal dock could be a good idea if a oem one doesn't surface.
From the pictures I've seen the desk dock takes a Micro USB input so wouldn't be that difficult to mod.
Brodit bracket to fix it to the car interior, NFC tag on the dock to toggle BT, screen brightness, volume up etc. Not sure quite how you'd get the phone to stay in the dock though, particularly portrait.
Hi-tech elastic band?
I suppose Brodit will release a holder for the Xperia Z similar to the one for the Xperia V. It will use the dock power connectors on the side.
I just wished they allow any micro-USB cable to the holder, not having their own soldered cable.

They swivel, you can put them in landscape, although they're most comfortable in landscape usually.
As others have said though, it's a shame they use soldered/molded cables, rather than allowing microusb.
Hi,
With the old HTC One M7, I had the original car dock, which was fine except it forced me to remove the case, and it also scratched the back of the phone a little if dust was trapped while sliding it. So I went with a universal one this time.
But I still want it to go to Car Mode once the power cable is plugged in. I know a resistor between pin 4-5 on the USB cable will probably do the trick, but I am looking to buy a ready made cable instead of cutting the insulation on an existing one to add the resistor then wrap it with a tape. It's ugly.
But I can't seem to find anyone selling those, does somebody have an idea where can I get one of those?
I have a car dock cable from my razr maxx. Ill try in on my new HTC One M8 and you know if that will work.

Ibolt sells a dock that is compatible with the One M8, I use it myself, and I believe they offer charging cables as well. You can also buy the ibolt cable from Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EO...5e9421f3eb45144dfa4&pi=SS115#ref=pd_aw_sims_9
Note: you will need a secondary microusb cable to connect this cable to the charger.
