ParanoidAndroid installation - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Folks,
i have a simple question and i hope someone can answer this:
I'm on GB 2.3.6 with XXLC1 (i did this via flashing old GB ->zergrush exploit -> GB 2.3.6 via mobile odin with keep root)
Am i right when i say that all i have to do now is putting the PA.zip in the root directory and flash it via CWM?
Or do i have to change the kernel or any other things?

Download and flash abyss kernel in CWM, then reboot into recovery (under advanced in CWM) and do a full wipe and then install PA

(Solved) Problems to get full root on ICS

Hey.
Yesterday i was trying to do an update of the 'SU binary' in Superuser under the ICS StuNNeR v1.4.26.1 ROM. But it didn't let me do it.
It told me something about S-ON and about not having a root access. So i thought that i was kinda screwed.
So i downgraded to an Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread ROM via PC Odin that was pre-rooted to see if that would help and installed CF-Root v5.3 via the 'Initial CF Root Flasher'.
After i had installed that Android 2.3.6 ROM, i made sure that i actually had full root access by copying a file from my SD card to the system folder after pressing the R/W button in Root Explorer.
That went all fine. I could also delete that file in the system folder again. So all was fine here.
Now i went into CWM and did those things.
1. Wipe Dalvik Cache
2. Wipe Cache Partition
2. Format Data / Factory Reset
After that i installed ICS StuNNeR v1.4.26.1 via CWM again (i have tried with other ICS ROMs to).
The installation of the ROM went all fine.
Now i'm in the ICS StuNNeR ROM on my Galaxy Note and i'm trying to update the 'SU binary' in Superuser.
Here it will fail and give me this message: This updater cannot update the su binary on phones that have some kind of write protection on the system partition like S-ON. You can continue to use Superuser with your outdated binary, or update su with ROM Manager.
And when i try to press the R/W button in Root Explorer here, then nothing happens either.
So my question is, what i'am doing wrong here to not get full root?
I have tried every possible ways to get root on any ICS ROMs, but without any luck.
If someone can give me an EXACT way of getting the full root back on ICS, then i would be gladly.
Did you flash the ICS repack?

Don't think so.

Well, I was double checking the instructions on Stunner and he doesn't say you have to flash the repack anymore coming from Gingerbread. He said tested and worked fine with CF root. Is the instructions of the OP of Stunner what you did?
---------- Post added at 11:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:13 AM ----------
I know on .19 of Stunner neobuddy switched to SuperSU, but he switched back to Superuser for compatibility with kernel. I'm on .19 now so I can't check the SU binary updater to see if I have any problems or not. Maybe someone else can!

Yes.
This is what i did.
Backup data apps.
Download and copy latest Stunner ROM on your SD Card.
Make sure you are on Rooted ROM. Reboot in recovery.
ONLY IF YOU ARE ON GINGERBREAD: Flash Abyss Kernel. Goto Advanced and Reboot Recovery. Tested and confirmed working on CF-Root Kernel.
Wipe Data (Recommended but not mandatory if you on Stunner ROM already)
Flash ROM.
Flash suitable Modem (Optional, recommended ICS LP5 modem)(not included in ROM)
Reboot and Read Caution.
Do not restore system apps or system data.
So yeah, as you guess. I have no freaking clue on why i can't get full root on ICS StuNNeR ROM (or other ICS ROMs).
Just follow chasmodo's guide in the Development forum (it's a sticky so you'll easily find it)..
Your problem is when you flashed Stunner directly from CWM recovery..
That guide has all the necessary steps, just follow it exactly and you'll be good with full root
So, you can't put a file in /system on Stunner at all? What about TI Backup? Do you use it? Can it gain root access?
I'm trying to work through this with you as much as I can, I'm not the smartest person on here by any means .
I want to tell you to install SuperSU, but I'm not sure if that's best. I tell you what, could you flash .19 Stunner instead of .26.1 and see if it works with root?
Edit:
I'm glad matius44 is on here to help you now!

Are you sure you used Abyss kernel version 4.2 exactly? It has worked for many users but there are minority who did not work for them too..
However, if you want to flash Stunner you can flash the ICS Repack by Chainfire (LP1 ONLY, NOT LP5) and from that you can flash Stunner and maintain root..But it's been discovered recently that repacks kernels are dangerous so I do not advice you to do it, you flash it on your own risk..

Yeah, i have used the AbyssNote kernel v4.2. Is there any difference from the AbyssNote kernel 4.2 Final CW Touch to the AbyssNote kernel 4.2 Final RedPill Touch ?
I used the AbyssNote kernel 4.2 Final CW Touch one though.
EDIT: Oh, i actually did flash an Android 2.3.6 LC1 ROM that is rooted before i flashed an ICS ROM with the AbyssNote v4.2 kernel. Maybe that's the problem?

Oh ok, then i will try again with the RedPill kernel to see if this will work then.
Stay put.
Installed a rooted Android 2.3.6 ROM via PC Odin.
Then i used the 'Initial CF Root Flasher' after placing the CF-Root v5.3 (LC1) zImage file in the 'zImage' folder and then used the 'already-rooted.bat' file to get the CF-Root 5.3.
Now i used CWM Recovery (By pressing Volume Up + Home and Power button) to flash the CheckROM NoteHD v6 (LC1) ROM. Yes, i did check that i had full root access here before i did continue.
Now when i'm in the CheckROM NoteHD ROM, then i opened the CWM application and then booted into CWM Recovery and then flashed the 'AbyssNote Kernel v4.2 Red Touch Original Logo'.
Then i restarted the CWM Recovery.
From here i did this.
Wipe Dalvik Cache, Wipe Cache Partition and Format Data / Factory Reset.
Now i installed the Nandroid backup i had of my ICS StuNNeR ROM earlier before i got those problems.
And after i did this, then i finally could update the 'SU binary' in the SuperSU application and get full access to the System folder with Root Explorer .

Am afraid to say you're one of the unlucky few who this method does not apply to them
Now you have 3 solutions:
1- From a rooted Gingerbread ROM flash the LP1 (notice LP1 ONLY, NOT LP5) using Odin (Mobile or PC), and after that flash Stunner from recovery. However, I do not recommend this seeing the recent news of how dangerous ICS kernels are..
2- From a rooted Gingerbread ROM flash the new official CM9 (taking into consideration the known issues) since it uses an open source kernel instead of one of the leaks' kernel
3- Wait for official ICS release so we have more reliable ICS custom kernels
Your choice mate
EDIT: Glad you sorted it out

Restore from Nandroid

Hello all,
I recently upgrade (for my first time) to ICS ROM with ABYSS Kernel,
but of course before my upgrade i backup my phone - Nandroid backup.
My question is:
can i restore my Nandroid image and all my Data, ROM and Kernel will be restore??
Thanks in advance,
Bar
Do NOT restore a nandroid backup with CWM on any of the stock ICS roms. You will need to flash the Abyss kernel to restore a nandroid.
What is the nandroid backup of? Like which rom?
The Nandroid backup i have is from my GB stock ROM,
can i go and restore form it?
Yes but first you must flash abyss kernel. Reboot into abysskernels cwm then you can restore the backup.
I already have Abyss kernel installed, is there another Abyss version for gingerbread?
my current Abyss version is: AbyssNotekernel42CWTouchOriginalLogo.zip

That's the right version. However, Abyss is just for Gingerbread and restoring nandroids. So, you couldn't have been booting ICS with Abyss because it wouldn't boot up, at least not correctly.
But yeah, if you don't have it flashed, flash Abyss, reboot recovery, and restore nandroid.
Thanks andreww88,
Before my upgrade to ICS i went through the below link instruction:
1. install Abyss Kernel
2. reboot into it
3. wipe data
4. install rom
Link:

please give last green light that i can go and restore Nandroid if i have Abyss ver 4.2 already installed on my GNote N7000?
Have you installed abyss again after ics?
Hi Belfia,
This is my problem, i failed install kernel.
after i installed Abyss and KingDroid ROM all went well, till i reboot into recovery via Rom Manager...
what can i do to go back to gingerbread? (i am afraid from bricking my device...)

Now, I understand you. Any time you flash a rom it will install the kernel that goes with it. So you flashed stock ICS so you have the stock ICS kernel (so do NOT wipe data and do not restore nandroid). Reboot into recovery. You need to flash the abyss kernel again in CWM. Then, you need to "Reboot Recovery". It should be in Abyss now. Now, you can do restore nandroid.
i think i was not clear enough, i will explain again:
After i installed Abyss and KingDroid ROM all went well, till i reboot into recovery via Rom Manager...
Now when i try to install Abyss Kernel again it's failed, it is stuck on "Installing Update..." (see screenshot attached).
what can i do to go back to gingerbread without bricking my device?
Thanks you all
OK - don't reboot after you install Abyss Kernel
After you install zip - choose Advanced > Reboot into recovery.
Don't reboot after install Abyss - it is likely a bootloader problem. Check out the video on first page and you will see that what I mean.

[Q] safely wipe clean note with ics?

I have N7000 with ICS (4.0.3) and XXLQ2 firmware. I have flashed chainfire's CF-Root kernel. BUT I want to completely reset/wipe the phone to its pristine condition. I have checked 'got brickbug' and i have got the brick bug. so what am i supposed to do? If I wait, will this bug be resolved by Samsung in an upgrade to ICS, or should I go 'back' to GB (if so, how), or can I ignore the brick bug thing and get on with it?
So you don’t want the Odin back to GB. Well then you have the Abyss Note 4.2 Kernel with Redpill Touch recovery. You are on any unsafe kernel ICS Rom and you want to go to safe rom then do one last CWM flash of Abyss kernel reboot recovery and then flash the safe roms. This keeps your root intact. You can even acieve root though this if you have lost it. Just flash Abyss 4.2 go to GB. Check root there and then flash the ICS rom. No need of repack. If any of this gets struck or brick then you know your way out already…..you told that in the question. Link for Abyss 4.2 Kernel is here.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362424 --Download AbyssNote 4.2 kernel with redpill touch recovery Or Abyss 3.9 Kernel (for some users where the 4.2 kernel haven't worked 3.9 worked perfect).
--Now first put this zip on your SD Card before you try to flash anything or restore anything.
--Now boot into recovery - Volume up + Home + Power
--Choose - install zip from SD Card
--Navigate to your Abyss kernel 4.2 or 3.9 zip and flash it
--After flashing is complete- go back to the Recovery start menu
--Go to advanced > reboot recovery
--This will reboot the phone directly to new recovery - Hyperdroid Redpill Recovery
--Now go to Wipe Menu and wipe cache, dalvik and do your factory reset
--After this start your restore from nandroid backup , or flash any GB rom !
Cheers!! Enjoy your Note!
Can be used to wipe only

Flashing Kernel

Am having a strange error when i try flashing any Kernel on my Stock ICS 4.0.4 Kernel...
steps followed
1. CF Root v5.6 Kernel, Abyss Red Kernel copied to External SD card,
2. Reboot recovery
3. Select Abyss Red Kernel
Display shows this
Finding Update package
Opening Update package
Verifying Update package
E:Signature Verification failed
How do i flash a kernel in this situation .. please help...
Have you tried installing using odin?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Did not go to PC Odin yet .. I wanted to flash a safe Kernel .. then wipe stuff.. then install Paranoid Android v0.5 (ICS)...
Wanted to understand why i can not flash a kernel ...
You can't flash a kernel in recovery without being rooted. In fact you shouldn't be messing with recovery if you are running ICS. just flash the kernel with ODIN PC and then use triangle away to reset counter. Stock recovery just flashes official updates and files.

humm.. I though i can flash a Kernel without problem... and then Wipe and flash a Custom ROM
i do know that I should not do a wipe while I am on stock ICS Kernel (will be BRICK)
Best and Safest Way to Flash Paranoid Android
Flash Stock GB via Odin Pc
Wipe Cache/Dalvik
Root Device/Install CWM
Reboot Recovery
Flash PA
Flash Gapps
Do All 3 Wipes
Reboot
This method is for a clean install and with this you can be sure of the quality and performance of ROM you are installing, No FC's / SOD's
Shortcut :-
CWM Recovery
Flash Abyss 4.2
Reboot Recovery
Flash PA
Flash Gapps
Do All 3 Wipes
Reboot System
Hope it helps

you will need a custom recovery first...that is why u usually flash the custom Kernel (that includes CWM) in ODIN PC. then, when u are rooted you can use mobile Odin...
Thanks guys.. I did not want to go the full process hence wanted to try this method..
anyway I waited and then went through the know .. Foolproof safe method .. The GB way...
Am on PA 0.5 now ..

Okay heres the thing , I want to flash a new roms and I did the same old thing
Wipe data/Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Go to advance screen and wipe dalvik cache
Install zip from sd card - > choose zip from sd card. Find your ROM in the extSDcard.
Flash the ROM and reboot system.
While flashing , it took so long to actually flash like 10mins or so and I give up and I did a hard reset.
Can anyone point to me where did I do wrong ?
And I'm trying to flash this

i tried flashing hydracore and it took for me 10mins plus at the screen and still at the same place.
you tried to flash hydracore, and its not installing ?
may be try to flash back the stock ICS using odin and then flash Philz kernel to gain root
.boot into recovery and go to mounts & storage.
format / sytem
format / data
then try to install your TMT rom
If TMT is installed, Or even part installed then it wont boot with Hydracore kernel, The main thing is just having the kernel installed cause its safe, So, In recovery (with Hydracore installed)
Do all the necessary wipes, Flash the ROM, Then flash the kernel (Philz kernel)
then it should boot
If not, follow the above post to revert back to stock ICS / GB with odin, and then start the whole procedure again :good:
