Wow. You're two versions behind. I'm very surprised you haven't received OTA update notifications.
Press Menu > Settings > About Phone and then tap System Updates and that should make your phone hit the update servers. You'll first end up updating to 5.9.902 and then 5.9.905.

Doesn't work just stays on a white screen?

You could probably fxz to .902 and then you should fix your ota issue so you can ota to .905 which is where you need to be for the eventual ics release.

[Q] Update not available at this time

Hi! Does anyone have this problem? When I go to System Updates it gets me a message that reads "Check for update is not available at this time. Try again later". I know the update is not realease yet but I'm concerned that if something is wrong. I tried with 3g and Wifi and it's the same. I rooted my phone and uninstall some apps from Verizon. Could this be the problem?

You just answered your own question.
Nope, I did'nt because on the other hand when I had a Motorola Droid 2 when I went to System Updates the message was different: "your device is updated, there's no other update available". What I meant is... The Droid 2 checks for updates even if aren't available, but the Droid 3 don't search, just says that it can't check.
Just wait a few moments and press check for update again, this usually checks properly, no idea why, mine does it too.
being rooted and especially missing some of the Verizon bloatware could certainly hamper your ability to update.
I also had this issue, multiple attempts to start the update immediately (and I mean no delay) came back with the same error.
I just manually ran the leaked OTA instead since it's been confirmed as the 'real deal'.

My D3 says, "You Device is up to Date! No update is necessary at this time."
I'm rooted and multiple bloat apps uninstalled(didn't know about Freezing prior).
I don't think it has anything to do with root. My girlfriends d3 isn't rooted and it tells her its up to date as well and our builds are the same. I think its verizon.

Yeah same, mines rooted, multiple apps frozen, with the "leaked/soaked" OTA update, and it says "You Device is up to Date! No update is necessary at this time.".
While rooted and having bloat killed the phone should download the update. It will just fail to install, because the update checks for system changes.
Where exactly did someone confirm the ota is the same as the "leak"? OTA isn't out yet, so I want to read the confirmation info myself.
The last time I flashed a leak (htc eris) I was stuck on a leak while everyone who was patient received the final release version OTA. We didn't get access to the latest stuff until roughly a month after those who waited.
Just curious, don't want to make the same mistake twice. Lol.

[Q] System updates not working

Hi all,
My wife and I both got Bionic the same day. Mine is rooted and hers is not. I noticed on hers you can go to settings>about phone>system updates and check to see if there are any.
However on my rooted phone it allways says something to the effect of ...'not available at this time". If I turn on wifi and try, it will have the spinning logo like its checking and says its checking, but this goes on without end.
Any ideas? Does rooting somehow disable your ability to receive system updates?
Thanks!
Yes
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
yes system updates are disabled typically on rooted devices because system updates may patch exploits that allowed the phone to be rooted meaning you may lose root permanately

Is it worth un-rooting to get the newest update? Can you root again after the update is installed?

NONONONO! The newest update isnt rootable yet!
Usually updates don't offer a big advantage anyways. I would research the update and make sure you really really really want to possibly lose root just to gain the advantage of whatever the update gives you.
9 times out of ten, I find the update to be pretty useless to even worry about.

Just got an update D95920s

Of course I lost root and it is still 4.4.2, but I can not find any documentation on what changed. Has anyone else received this update?
Baseband version: M8974A-AAAANAZM-2.0.20064
Kernel Version: 3.4.0
Update: TowelRoot does not seem to work with this update!
also got it. its a 220+mb update.
I just got this update as well. I got the message that says it is downloaded and wants to install. I am rooted with TWRP installed now. I have read that some people have had problems and been bricked when they tried to install some updates in the past. For this reason, I went into the hidden menu and disabled OTAs. Guess that didn't work. Has anyone else taken this update being rooted with twrp successfully?
You won't be able to rooted or with custom recovery. Check out the meta-inf script. It will fail if any fishy is going on with your device. I'm going to edit it later tonight so I can post the flash able zip for us to update. All its really updating is the radio.img and a few other apks as well as some security updates.
Checked no update for me. In the Houston area. But read online it was for the VoLTE update and In Flight text messaging

Once we flash and update, towel root will work again? Someone said they couldn't get towel root to work after the update. For now I'm just playing around with cm11. If someone would get it or another ROM working pretty good, I'd just use it. I had planned on selling the flex and use my bump to get a nexus 6 through t-mobile. But if things get rolling a little around here. I'm happy with my flex. I wish there was more I could do but its over my head. My previous two devices were a Nexus and HTC they were easy compared to this.
How do you disable OTA updates?
Sent from my LG-D959 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I pulled out all the "abort install if blah blah blah" lines from the Meta-Inf folder and all the lines to install the priv-apps and just for my sake i took out the priv-apps since it would replace with .odex and im deodexed. Checked the updater script for any other "abort or security" crap. Didnt see anything else. So i repacked the update into a flashable.zip and flash away. It adds this really cool "SECURITY ERROR" Under the LG logo on boot up. And transforms the device into a temporary outrageously expensive paper weight.
So i rebooted into twrp and restored. So far a no go. I think after digging through it and seeing what all is in it.....im just gonna make a flashable of the new radio.img incase it upgrades ours and gets better service or picks up those techno tunes from Venus.
I had 2 back to back updates, but I ended with D95920m.
I accidentally downloaded the update. I actually don't even remember doing it. I just saw that it was successfully downloaded. It hasn't updated yet. Is there anything i can do to get rid of it? I don't want to lose root. I don't have a custom recovery installed. I only have root access as that is typically all that I need.
Also, any chance anyone has tried to use towelroot on this after it breaks root? EDIT: Never mind, just saw the OP's update that towelroot will not work. F this. I need to get rid of this phone.
I renamed the file that it downloaded, so at least now it is just asking me to download the update again. I also installed a TWRP in the mean time. I guess I just need to disable updates now.
I am in the same situation... Can you please tell me where the update is downloaded to? I need to rename mine as well in case I were to accidentally hit install update.
How do you get the update notification to go away?
I have seen the option to hide it in one of the xposed modules, but can't remember which one...

The Update should download under Cache or Data/Cache. It should work disabling OTA updates in the hidden menu.
3845#*959#, the go to WLAN test --> OTA Settings and disable
Thank you so much!

Did the 4.4.4 update break future updates?

So like everyone else here, I am anxiously waiting for AT&T to give us L. However, since I did the 4.4.4 update, my phone does not seem to do anything when I check for an update.
If I go to Settings -> General->AboutDevice and click the "Software updates" line, it used to open a separate screen. Now it does nothing. Is that the way 4.4.4 is supposed to behave, or did AT&T bung this up?
Hmm... when I do the same thing.. it tells me "checking for software updates" then says "current software is up to date". My att gs5 is on stock 4.4.4. Yours is stock rom as well?

Yes. Rooted, but stock. Using Apex instead of TW, perhaps that's the problem.
That would be my guess... mine is not rooted. One other thing that I've noticed prior to 4.4.4 upgrade, if I was checking for updates multiple times within a day by advancing date/time manually... that next screen/page may not show up. Instead I would just see that updater data-trasfer icon.

AT&T Software update as of 7/9/15 - 146.75MB

Not sure what this is yet. Non rooted, stock image.
5.1.1?? Will report back...
Not 5.1.1
No idea as they haven't posted changelog, but hopefully a fix for MicroCell issues everyone is experiencing.
Let us know if you see any changes.
Update downloaded.
Real upgrade from OE2 to OF3. Thats all it says.
@Globalrebel where are you looking for change logs?
Update just finished. Yeah Android version is still 5.0.2. Baseband G925AUCU2AOF3 now.
Getting it now.

You mean since 5.1.1 was supposed to hit the S6's "in June?"
This is getting ridiculous, we need an update from 5.0.2, the memory issues I'm dealing with even on XtreStoLite are almost unbearable
Exactly and as updates for 5.1 come out for other carriers we get updates for random att crap that are almost a month old
It's sad to say that the latest AT&T OTA patches the export for ping pong root, don't take the OTA, because you cannot downgrade the Odin fails

They know because it says on the Ping Pong Root thread not to update for anything past May 15th as the method for root has been patched
I'm curious if there are any other undocumented changes besides the 2 official changes listed earlier. It feels like a fairly big patch for a fix to an phone location and a kernel security fix.
Is there any hope, luck or signs of achieving root on this new firmware

Wow, what a crappy push out by AT&T.
In any case, what process do i need to freeze in TB to stop my phone from trying to download and/or annoying me with that pop-up when it does happen?

AT&T Software Update is the main one, but there are a few others - I don't have an AT&T ROM on mine right now to help out, but it's been posted a few times already (I think I even posted those once)
Just freeze att software update. Then it can't even run so no downloads. I got lucky I clicked on update after reading it in Android central but didn't want to install it. Postponed couple of times but somehow it automatically loaded the update process. I was like sh#t. When it booted up it said a problem updating. And then I blocked the updater. My root almost gone lol
