Wake up lag/delay - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently using CM9 RC1 and I notice that there is a slight 1-1.5 second lag from the time I hit the power or home button to when the screen actually wakes up. I think I had this problem on stock as well.
I have an LG Optimus One and pressing either hardware buttons instantly turns on the screen. Is this a hardware issue or can it be fixed? It's not terribly annoying but I'd prefer it to be more responsive.

Since ICS Stunner Rom is using the CM9 Kernel I have the same feeling that the phone needs more time to wake up.

+1 same here

Well if it's software related then I hope it gets updated soon.

The wakeup lag has plagued Samsung phones. My SGS2 had it and so does my Note irrespective of rom or kernel. Samsung seems to think that it is acceptable. It annoys the hell out of me and if I wasn't so impressed with all the other aspects of my phone I'd jump ship to HTC. When will Samsung learn that the wakeup lag is not acceptable???
And before someone chimes in about deep sleep, think about this. Other brands obviously deep sleep and they don't have the lag. This is a Samsung issue that needs to be recognized and acknowledged by them and then fixed. Even their flagship S3 has it FFS.

The OP is in the correct forum. You either didn't read or didn't understand his post. He has a Note that has wakeup lag like the rest of us, and he has an LG that has no wakeup lag.

Well that's seems to be an ics issue.. Galaxy nexus had it on stock but with a custom kernel oc able you could just set interactive governor with 512-720 mhz speed on the lower speed and lag was gone..
I recall this because nexus has pure aosp non samsung software at all
But this issue its fixed on jelly bean so the nexus with stock rom/kernel with no changes at all won't lag on wakeup
Maybe other oems sets their stock kernels with the lower clock a bit higher than 320 to avoid this at some battery cost..
Just my 2 cents

It's not an ICS issue because both my Galaxy S2 and my Galaxy Note had the problem on Gingerbread. I can't see how the lower clock speed can help because the phone is clocking a lot less than the lowest clock when asleep. The only time I've seen no lag on the S2 or Note is when the phone doesn't actually go into deep sleep. This can be confirmed with CPU Spy.
I've read that the Nexus doesn't have the lag with Jellybean. My last great hope for my Note is that Jellybean will fix the wakeup lag, but I won't believe it till I see it.

My S3 LTE comes with Jellybean but the lag is still there. AARRggghh!

[Q] Phone randomly turns off

Has anyone's Ace randomly shut off? Like, the other day, I woke up and found my phone off (while charging) and now (while charging as well) I was using it, locked it and put it on the table to find the green battery icon it shows when the phone is off and charging.
Does anyone know whats going on? I'm not using any scripts or mods. Just Beats and Ram Manager set on normal balanced. Think its the difference in governors? I have a charging profile of 844 max performance and a normal profile of 806 ondemand.
Doubt it, but who knows.
It's the cpu... Even on my ace when I used setcpu and made some profiles the phone became very unstable instead of working more smoothly than before it became unstable
Ultimately I had to delete it and for cpu I use the cm settings

Kk, took off the performance charging profile. Now the phone is running completely ondemand. I'll see if the problem keeps happening.
I think it is though because I've had this problem before way before I knew about CPU settings. But whatever, doesn't hurt to try xD
This was happening to my wife's S2 as well and what we did was put a piece of paper behind the battery and the case to put pressure on the battery so it would stay in place. Seems to be a quick fix.

I had the similar problem when I got the phone brand new. My phone was restarting now and then. Also due to bad battery readings I thought, my battery was defected. So I got replaced in Service Centre. Took me 2 hours to fight with them and finally I won a replacement battery with an old one.
I'm saying this in your randomly turns off thread, because after replacement of battery, My phone never restarted. So This could be a battery problem too.
Another suspicion can be your CPU. Dude, Overclocking can reduce your CPU life span. Not every hardware gives the same performance as same clock. In another words, you can't say your overclocked CPU will ran flawlessly, because your friend's overclocked CPU ran 10 months without problems. I always say this, If you want to stay out of trouble of hardware problems, DO NOT OVERCLOCK CPU. You might are seeing it as "just" 44Mhz over 800Mhz. But, also you don't know whats your CPUs facing. Can you?
PS: On Performance CPU governor uses the MAX CPU clock all the time, even when its idle.
my phone randomly shuts off if i overclock beyond 825 mhz, irrespective of the rom. maybe thats whats happpening?

Let me tell you my story. My ace also turned randomly off and I didn't know what to do.
I did a research and found out that it can (CAN, not surely) be something with the wifi. Go to settings wifi settings then press menu advanced settings and then put to never.
I did it a while ago and I think it works for now.

[Q] Galaxy Note: The amount of its laggyness?

Hello Fellow Members,
Okay I have been reading a lot of complaints about the Note being laggy and frankly even I came across a couple of Galaxy Notes at two different malls/stores on display and they both lagged like anything. Although the lag was for just a couple of seconds but it was very frustrating. I noticed the lag throughout in the OS, right from swiping the home screens to scrolling in the settings or scrolling the browsing or while opening the apps. (Any app). And it became even more frustrating to see a previous model (Galaxy s2) working as smooth as melting butter. I operated them side by side and, man the difference was noticeable, seriously NOTICEABLE. I was soooooooooo disappointed. I had the cash with me but I was just not willing to believe, such a high spec’d phone would lag . And eventually I came from the store without purchasing one .
I have read on XDA forums also where many G-Note users have complained about their experiences of Galaxy Note being laggy. Hence, I would “request” you all to please make short videos of your galaxy Notes, upload on youtube and share the link with us here, so that someone who wants to buy a NOTE would see the amount of laggyness of the phone and then decide, whether this lag is acceptable or inacceptable for him/them. Please show the scrolling on contacts, S-pen notes, swiping between home screens, scrolling the browser etc.
Please guys, come forward and do so, as I youtubed a lot but couldn’t find videos showing the laggyness of Note. All videos are filled with how smooth and fast the NOTE is. And seeing that, I went to purchase one but….
P.S: Rooting isn’t an option for me as this will void the warranty and I don’t want to void my warranty. Hence no rooting
Also, people say that ICS will solve the issue. I have seen on other phones that initially it does make the device faster but with daily usage, it becomes same as it used to be with the previous version of OS.
Rooting will void your warranty but but if done in correct way you can unroot and get it back.
Older firmware were slow and laggy but LC1 and LC2 are smooth.
Have you tried V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts before ? You'll need root though.
These littile thing inject steroids in your phone.
Wait wait wait wait.
You have used such difficult Jargons of Andriod world that I am just not able to catch you up .
Okay, as you have mentioned, V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts will require Rooting my device (although I have no idea what are V6 SuperCharger or ThunderBolt scripts), but tell me these LC1 and LC2 are firmware updates, right? And they can be updated "without" rooting the device. Isn't it?
And this update will make G-Note blazing fast, like s2?
Guys, please respond and help.

Dont compare Note and S2. The same processor and same GPU in S2 powers a smaller screen with less pixels and less DPI. Here in Note you have the same processor and GPU power a huge HD screen with the best DPI in business. Also all the apps are built on hdpi resolution while the note is xhdpi resolution so the apps and launchers tend to get laggy. Also there is no hardware acceleration supported in much apps. I am using ICS Stunner and using it on 240 dpi which is hdpi resolution and its silk smooth. Butter!
And i dont have time to make videos. So if you can then take my word. If not then each one to his own
Cheers!! Enjoy your Note!!
You don't need to be rooted to update firmware.
Use pc odin or built-in OTA (Over The Air - Phone updates itself using 3G/WiFi) update feature.
update to the latest stock firmware released in 2012.....should b much smoother. But we're all waiting for ics which should be out very soon.
advice: go bak to the shop......remove all widgets on homescreen and/or change wallpaper to static nd try. I have noticed that some live wallpapers and widgets cause lagginess. I usually remove everythng from the homescreen and start adding them 1 by 1 and checkng.....one widget sometimes is the culprit.
Ics should smooth everythng as some have reported.
Owned a Note and 7.7
7.7 slightly slower than Nexus, Note is laggy, esp when not turned off for days.

I am not saying it should run games which require excellent acceleration or requires immense power from GPU, as I am not into heavy mobile games. All I require is butter smooth execution of day-to-day usage. Be it scrolling contact, scrolling web page, swiping through 10 application screens or swiping 7 home screens.

Your response is somewhat relieving I must tell you. But the comment under your post is disturbing . I mean I want a butter smooth tock ROM device and after paying $607 for G-Note, I don’t want to regret and speed it a “very” essential part of my checklist of a smart phone.

I never specifically told about games. To have everything buttery smooth u require hardware acceleration which gpu provides in the apps browser and launchers. So gpu is not just for games. Now you got why i told you all that above. To have everything running smooth on such big screen and resolution u require hardware acceleration. Ever noticed lag in all third party launchers? Its becoz they don't have hardware acceleration. The stock TW launcher is partially hw accelerated so still runs somewhat smooth.
The original dpi of Note is 321
BOOMED from my BOMBASTIC NOTE
Tbh you can't really blame the note for being a tad laggy since it is basically a computer and all computers ( even the best) will come across a type of lag within its lifetime.

Well then that sucks
here is a tip to the op.. You will find 99% of all problems you look for.. If you didnt look, you would not know there are problems.
The key to happiness in life is being happy with what you have and setting your expectations ot a reasonable level..
If you dont need the large screen, go buy something else. If you do need the large screen, then you have no choice but the note..
so either relax and enjoy your note or be paranoid about this and every other device on the planet, and buy every new device as it comes out and drive yourself into a frenzy of despair about this problem, that problem, this issue that issue until you realise all this agony and money has not fixed a single thing in your life, you are stressed, depressed and you end up a bankrupt nuerotic..

This device has NOTHING bad in it.. Just the LAG LAG LAG!
Nice post though! Loved it.
I am using stock GB and I have almost no lag. Maybe you should make a video and show us what lag you are talking about.
I am using stock rom (gingerbread) at the moment and experience none of the lag you refer to. I also tried some of the ics roms and also no lag.
The only time my phone 'hesitates' is sometimes when I unlock it as it switches from widget locker to lock screen. Now as it is a 3rd party app doing it, I can hardly blame the note. I love my note and even got rid of my galaxy nexus and asus tf101 when i got the note.

It's on the latest firmware available in my country (Malaysia)
All I can think is, Gingerbread is just far inferior to ICS or Honeycomb. Nokia Lumia is a lot faster too (hope that word is not banned here)
Then again, some items images/video captured in 7.7 is only 3.2mp vs 8mp.

Project Butter

Since the new 4.1 update will snap up the processor to max as soon as you touch the screen to keep everything running smooth, won't that take a larger toll on the battery than Android already does in general? Or do they have some new battery saving plans for this new feature.

I read somewhere that the JB update clocks the processor to a lower frequency when the load is low thus saving the battery.
I guess they compiled a new governor or something.

Yep
you guys don't know what projekt butter is?
they added a "tripple buffer for less locks and better process interoperatibility. one process doesn't have to wait for another anymore"
or in non dev words: they optimized the whole system
this doesn't has anything to do with the cpu freq.

Who gave you that idea? Not reading thread fully,i guess? We were not just discussing about Project Butter. We were discussing about how power efficient, smooth and fast the new update will be.And to further prove that the things we were discussing here is correct:
The first side of the Jelly Bean update is the way it interacts with hardware. One of the main complaints with Androids is that it often gets laggy even on the most sophisticated devices. Google has finally radically addressed this so manufacturers and developers can make their devices lag-free. The solution is called Project Butter and it comes with triple buffering so that the CPU and GPU work without waiting for each other. This means scrolling, zooming and virtually all actions become much faster.
Jelly Bean devices will actually anticipate where fingers are in screens which will results in a more responsive system.
The other big thing is power efficiency. Jelly Bean now dials the CPU back to lower frequency when it’s not in use.

BTW triple buffer,i guess you dont know what it is.
IN NON DEV WORD,optimizing touch screen drivers,GPU and CPU so that they work simultaneously, starting each process at the same time at the other.
@OP,google stated that as soon as u stop interaction with phone, cpu freq. will immediately decrease, thus saving battery.Somewhat like intellidemand gov.,but more seamless

Disappointed

I am very disappointed with this device. Since I bought this phone always had problems.
Starting from overheating when I'm playing something.
Then the side of the device begins to peel.
Then mold spots appear on the screen.
Then this whole bootloader, rom buggy, etc.
If this device was really good, I do not feel the need to change rom and make the machine go through so many updates. The handset comes with manufacturing a critical bug in the camera. Among other problems. Now I finally got my braces bad time. If I can not fix it I have to leave for Samsung.
I'm no novice user. I've had three devices of Lg.
Lg Optimus One Phone = Bug Phone.
Lg Optimus 2x = Bug Phone.
And now the Lg Optimus 4x = Hd Bug Phone.
I am seriously evaluating getting a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Visit the forum of this device in Xda. Hardly find complaints about it.
Lg P880 I bought this because it is cheaper, but now I find that cheap actually ends up costing too high.

Yep same here the "quad core+1" tegra 3 "blazing fast" cpu is one real bad cpu to start with, it sucks for real tasks and overheats for that matter. the screen isn't like the other hd ips screens it has a yellow temperature tint unlike the others the blues look desaturated the most out of all the colors and it feels cheaply made.

please define your "overheating"
overheating is when your device powers off, due to 90°C processor temperature...
the tegra 3 default throttle temp is 85°C, LG's is 71°C... i changed the value in my custom kernel to 80°C, so we can get a better performance also with high temps...
and have you ever been thinking what's working in your device? you've got 4 CPU cores and 1 GPU core... now think of a normal PC, what does a normal PC have, what a phone doesn't? right, a fan. or cooling in general. so the higher temps are completely normal...

If u don't like the phone, just sell it, what's the problem?
And i don't see any overheating problems, what are You launching, Crysis from PC?
I think this is the best phone for this price.many phones is the same like ours but cost too much.desighn is verry cool,we dont have many roms and kernels because we just unlocked ours bootloaders and i think we have to wait little more for more stuf.

Play your games in the fridge! All quad cores get hot! The Samsung amoled screens are horrible! I fancy an s3 because I am a mobile gamer, but if kholks new kernel can give me the performance I was expecting then no way! Everything else about this phone is so much better than Samsung!

If you have any problems like bubbles under the screen or excessive-myfingersareburning-overheating you should probably use your warranty and get this device checked by authorized personel. Personally, I had none of these problems you mentioned. Phone is rooted, bootloader is unlocked, CyanogenMod is happily running "under the hood". Stock ROM was pretty good for me, but CM is CM. You can't say 'no' to CM. If you don't like this phone, then sell it. Note 2 is indeed a powerful device, I'm sure that you'll be happy with it. But! This phone has yet to show its true power through custom ROMs and kernels. My old 2010 flagship - HTC Desire - got ROM with JB and Touchwiz5 powered by awesome custom kernel, so I really have no doubts that our O4X, which is 10 times stronger than Desire, will get some sick modifications sooner or later (starting with EternityProject kernel and CM 10.1). Cheers! :highfive:

I can't speak much of comparing the 4X to other phones as my last phone was some crappy chinese knock-off of a htc sensation. But my 4X is built very well (id like to see what you guys mention as 'bubbles' under your screen, was it like that since you brought it?) the phone does get ridiculously hot (you might have seen my thread about my screen suffering major distortion for a few hours, due to overheating while on ac charge ), but again well within tegra 3 specs (this this is stock clocked at 1.5ghz which is 200mhz higher than my tf300t tablet which has much more room to dissipate heat)
Im in love with the design of the phone, only issue i have is i feel the back button is on the wrong side but i use LMT launcher anyway(if you don't know what it is i suggest you look it up). The stock firmware was fine(no issues) other than feeling bloated, stock jellybean was slightly smoother and a bit lighter, CM10.1 is absolutely amazing and in my opinion increases the value of the phone drastically.
Just my take on it.....

I know, I look at temperature shown in hidden menu > cpu usage.

My last phone was a One X and this is on a par at least with that, except in gaming until I at least hope custom kernels will change that.

Solution to lag?

I think I may have temporarily fixed my lag problem, hopefully some of you experiencing lag will give it a try and see if it works for you.
I was just playing around with features I hadn't messed with today and of course my S5 had become laggy the last few days. Just for fun I enabled Ultimate Power Saving mode and played with it for a min then turned it off. To my surprise I was flipping through my screens and the animations are typically laggy and suddenly they were lag free?! What the heck....
Anyway some apps are still not the fastest, but my screen transitions and overall speed has been quicker since turning the Ultimate Powersaving mode on and off.

I love ultimate power saver I turn it on every night before I go to bed and I have only had it drop 2% at most

OP: You do realize that with ultimate power mode turned on, the device WILL LAG and that's perfectly normal. It is throttling back the CPU/GPU to save battery life. I am still not sure if you are being serious or not. I was under the impression everyone knew that.

Maybe I wasn't very clear. I have the lag in the REGULAR mode. I had never touched ultimate power saving mode until today. I flipped it on and when I turned it off all my lag was gone from REGULAR mode.

Oh. Every S5 has lag. Some people notice it, some don't. But it is there. Best solution is to run another launcher, like Nova prime. You'll be fine then. Also disable a lot of the bloat.

Your s5 has lag, you just aren't bothered by the .5-.75s lag that occurs regularly on this phone. Its not 'omg i'm sitting here waiting forever' lag its waiting for transitions and acknowledgements of your commands.

Every s5 has minimum lag whether you believe it or not. If you use a phone that's optimized better you will see it. I have my s4 with a GE ROM and I notice lag on my s5 after I'm done using my s4

Do you have evidence to back that up? My buddy has the S5 for Sprint and he's never rooted or uninstalled a single application on his phones. He's not tech savvy and uses them to play a game or two, call, and text. I picked his up to mess with it a bit and there wasn't a single hint of lag. It isn't that I couldn't notice it, it's that it simply wasn't there. so... not EVERY S5 has lag just like NOT EVERY S4, Note III, etc...

Every S4 had lag buddy. The S5 has been greatly improved but the .75 sec delay when closing an app just isn't noticeable to everyone. I bet if I picked up your buddy's S5 I would find lag. It's on every device, everyone just doesn't notice it. that's a fact!

It is not a fact. It is a matter of opinion. All computing devices have response times greater than zero. Some people will implicitly define lag as 0.1 second, some might define it as 0.5 sec. Some might define it as 1 second.
Since there is no standardized definition of "lag", saying a device has lag or not, is merely stating a personal impression.

I dont think every S4 or S5 have lag, however my S4 had some lag even though it was very very slight. My S5 has no lag. I say this because I sell phone s at my job and I sell lots of S5 devices for all carriers and I see the lag on certain phones here and there when I activate them for customers. I notice alot of white S5s for any carrier have more camera issues...idk why but it just happens more often with the white ones, and i do see lag on the att and verizon ones more often but then again I see some that are super fast out of the box with all the bloat and features turned on.

I think the term lag here is being misinterpretted. I think the lag people are talking about is just the normal delay when opening apps or when something is being calculated. In the past, lag has been described as responsiveness of the touch screen, which it is almost zero lag. Scrolling is lagless, but things like opening the task switcher or bringing up certain apps has a small delay before populating the screen.

I agree with you, I beleive lag is often misunderstood however it is present on some models, remember not all cpu chips are made equal and this is why somepeople complain about phones lagging ,phones getting too warm and such things. I always tell customers that if their phone is acting up so much they can bring it back to exchange it if they feel its not performing the way it should. Can't sell people crappy units.
Also having insurance for non techy people helps because you can call and argue about warranty exchanges or if you have sprint we will replace your phone if we can tell is crapping out.
the bottom part of the link shows how to reduce lag by turning of animations http://blog.laptopmag.com/galaxy-s5-guide
After turning off all animations in developer options (first thing I did), I never experienced lag whatsoever.

LMMFAO. You're so completely delusional but whatever helps you get through the day, "buddy."
If you want to use touchwiz with minimal to no lag, try these things out. (also reduces some battery consumption)
1. Turn of My Magazine
- long press app switcher on home screen, then go to home screen settings and uncheck my magazine
- go to app manager then all apps. fine my magazine and turn it off. yes you can skip the first part of this, but this is the proper way to disable it so the system knows it's off before disabling it.
2. turn transition & animatior scales down or off
- enable dev options "(setings, about device, tap on build number a bunch)
- in dev options under drawing change the transition and animator scales down or off completely
3. turn off the s voice shortcut
- open s voice, go to settings then uncheck open via home key
hope this helps some people get rid of their "lag"
