help choosing rom / kernel - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

hi, ive been reading all these threads and cant seem to find what im looking for or just not completely getting it, i get lost with all these different roms and kernels with all the numbers hash slash marks ect. and not real sure what it all means .
what i have is a stock vivid with ics 4.0.3. , software number 3.26.502.5671rd , sense ver. 3.6
what i want is the fastest or smoothest web browsing , with out all the bloat ....improved battery life would be nice and hotspot also but not a must
and do i need s off for any reason or root ?
i just want to understand all this and get lost or overwhelmed with all the terminology and how to know witch rom will work with witch kernels ,any help would be great thanks

Wrong thread!!

Your in the wrong thread but I'll give you a quick answer.
1. Root your Vivid
2. S-OFF your device
3. Get Dark Raiders ROM
4. Flash Kozmikz kernel
5. Enjoy!

some more questions
i have been trying to get this all down so i don't mess nothing up "done had a boot loop issue" but i got it all fixed just want to go over what i don't understand yet , ok on a custom kernel do i have to control stuff like the cpu? or is it all automatic ? if i down load one ( using cwm ) what files do i put on the root of the sd card?
as for roms i want to try a couple to see witch ones i like best such as dark raider rom there is a lot of files there and im not sure of witch one or ones to put on the root of the sd as well ,
and using cwm will doing a recovery just put it on the sd automatic ? do i erase every thing after i do a recovery ? kernel first or rom ? or do some roms have kernels already ?
i also read i have to have the up dated hboot , how do i know if i do?
i took a stock phone awhile back did the ruu and got ics now i have unlocked boot loader, s off , and rooted
did i miss any thing ? i just dont wanna crash it again that was the worst feeling every , well as far as losing a toy

Are you s off? If you are not s off then you can't flash kernels through recovery...you will have to fastboot flash them.
When you flash a kernel with oc abilities it will be set to a default speed by the dev that made the kernel...so no you font gave to set your CPU speed...but you can...
Before you flash anything you will have to wipe data cache and Slavic cache from with in your recovery
Before flashing a Rom it is wise to flash its kernel before hand through fastboot...unless your s off...if your s off then wipe and flash
As long as your on ics then your on the newest hboot

I'm s off
So witch files in the kernel and Rom do I move to the root of Sd ?
And let me see if I have this right ,
Go into h boot , wipe the 2 catch you mentioned , then do the recovery , then install the files from the kernel then the Rom files before booting ? Is that correct ? And I guess cwm will kinda walk me thru it ?
I also downloaded flash image GUI if needed , Im not sure if I can do it all with cwm or if I needed both .

Alright...you just need the zip, do not extract it, leave everything in the zip
Don't wipe anything from hboot, just boot into recovery and you will see the options to wipe
Once wipe is done instal zip...it can be on external sd or internal...if you put on exterrnal ad then choose install zip from sd card/external sd if its in internal then choose install zip from internal storage
All you need is cwm since your s-off

Let me download it to see what your talking about...but it should just be a zip??
Edit: downloading now its coming as a single zip...I think your viewing the contents of the zip...just put the darkraider zip in the phone...it may look like a folder but its actually a compressed zip file...if you right click it in windows it should say compressed under properties

But it seems like I did that somewhere before and it told the file was too larg to be a Rom ?? 600mb and so I asked some one somewhere and they told me to dig in the files and get what I need out and put on Sd that way
600 mb sound right for a Rom ?

When you install it from sd, it will run a program similar to windows install wizard I guess...it gives you options on what you want, you just choose yes or no.
Don't worry about the questions, your new...better to ask a lot of questions and get it right the first time then to not ask enough questions and get it wrong...
So,
1)get the DarkRaider_1.5.5.zip on your phone
2)Boot into recovery
3)From within recovery wipe data, cache and dalvic cache
4)Install zip from internal storage/or sd card
5)Locate and choose dark raider
6)From there it will open the installer (aroma)
7)then just keep going through aroma until it let's you install
8)reboot and enjoy

Since your s off the kernel should automatically be installed by the Rom, if it doesn't let us know and we will tell you what to do from there (if wifi works after installing the Rom then the kernel installed)

Are you already rooted? If you are rooted then download this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453617 its a dollar on playstore but he has free download on that thread.
Install that app (its called flash image GUI)
Download recovery of choice...cwm, wcx, twrp...whatever (I personally use twrp)
Open the flash image GUI choose recovery image
Navigate to and select the recovery of your choice that you downloaded
Press flash
If you are not yet rooted then
Download use the vivid toolkit
Choose recovery you want to flash
Flash it with the toolkit
Let me know how those options work for you

I have that one , I finally got it I just went in recovery from cwm and got it all done except the WiFi says error now , but everything else seems ok ,
the network interenet works good then then every now and then it just stops working but the Sig is up and down here
Also do I need to re down load cwm ? It's gone after I installed the d raider Rom

Hmm...its strange you lost cwm after dark raider...yeah I would download and reflash it...
And as for the WiFi not working, thats a common symptom of a bad kernel flash...here's what you do, with some sort of zip/archive program browse the dark raider zip and extract the boot.IMG (you can use the app "es file explorer" from play store...its free
Once you have boot.IMG extracted flash it with flash image GUI or vivid toolkit...
If WiFi still doesn't work then reflash the Rom
Or you can just download a kernel of choice and flash it in recovery (I have kozmikkernel on my vivid)

We have tutorials on how to root your phone, the most complete is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466436 (credit to vertigo)
You then need to install your custom ROM (this is the ICS one, called WRE), this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1491039 the most recent version is v1.5 so download that one.
Good luck and welcome!
If you have any problems then just ask, make sure you search for the answer first though because if you are asking chances are someone else may have asked too.

If you explain what stages you have done, then I can help more. Have you got Clockwork MOD (recovery) on your phone?
It depends on your preference. If you like heavily themed ROM's then:
BinDroid: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420841
or
Coredroid: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444664
If you like a stock look:
ANDTopix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429241
or
Dutch Danny also made flashable tweaked stock ones: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430794
The ICS one you know about.

It's made from scratch by cb.de and is our own ICS ROM.
Okay, download it from here: http://s346598003.online.de/download/WRE_1_5.zip
Once it's downloaded you need to move it to your SD card on your phone, once that's done follow the steps below:
1. You need to get into recovery, first take the back off your phone, take the battery out and then put it back in, replacing the back too.
2. Now whilst holding volume down on the side of the phone, also hold down the power button.
3. You will get the HBOOT screen. There you should see the option recovery.
4. Use the volume to scroll down to RECOVERY and select it using the power button (use the volume rockers to scroll all the time and POWER button to select).
5. Go to 'wipe data/factory reset' and select scroll to 'yes' and select.
6. Once that's complete it go to 'wipe cache partition' and select scroll to 'Yes' and select.
7. Then, go to 'advanced' then 'wipe dalvik cache' scroll to 'yes' and select.
8. Then, scroll to 'Wipe Battery Stats'
9.Once that's complete go to 'go back' and select.
10. Go to 'install zip from sdcard' and select then 'choose zip from sdcard' and select, scroll to find your zip file. the rom. 'WRE v1.5.zip' or something similar.
11. Select on that and it will start to flash.
12. Once it's complete select 'reboot system now'
It will take a while too boot up. but allow ten mins at most!
ok brother in these WRE Can we install apps after tht ? what abt the beats audio will it work/Htc sense ?
and if we want to restore to factory setting we can get the old rom na brother
brother can we use nexus rom for xl ?

Yeah you can install apps after that, you will need to flash Google Apps once you've installed WRE.
it doesn't have HTC sense or beats. Just music and a equalizer you can play with.
We are still waiting for android 4.0 and sense 3.6 or 4.0
And you can't use nexus ics on the xl. It would need porting and a lot of work. This looks and feels like the nexus ICS though.

You can do a back up before installing WRE.
To do that go to 'back and restore' select and then, go to 'back up'
Should back up your current ROM. Meaning should you want to go back to your current ROM now, you can.
If you want to completely reset your phone, losing the root and everything you can by running a RUU but make sure you download the correct region for your device.
I will be online should you have any problems and I will try help.
Just back up your rom now whilst you are downloading WRE.
Get to recovery, as I explained before, then use the steps I just explained above.

If you're struggling with the above instructions, remember that you will need to un-install HTCsync because it interferes with fastboot and rooting...
Then once you're rooted you will need to put CWM (Clockwork Mod) recovery on in order for you to be able to back up your phone and flash custom roms. The custom recovery by Paul O'Brien is the best one to use and is available to download here...http://android.modaco.com/topic/348973-clockworkmod-recovery-5027-unofficial-modaco-edition/
You will need your phone in fastboot again and you will need to find the fastboot folder on your PC (Windows). When you're in the fastboot folder press the left shift button and right click on the mouse and select open command prompt here. Make sure your phone is connected to the PC and is in fastboot. Also make sure that the recovery.img file that you downloaded from MoDaCo is in the fastboot folder too. Get back to the command promt window and type the following
fastboot flash recovery r1-recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-modaco-runnymede.img (Tip: once you get to the r1 bit just hit tab and it will auto complete the rest of the line)
If you can't get the Paul O'Brien recovery installed (apparantly not everyone can) try the Older recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1348693
I took that from the tutorial that I linked you to, its got everything explained right up to flashing your custom ROM
recovery is nt working bro its sayign waitin 4 the device ..

[Q] [Help] ICS black screen on bootup

Hey guys,
My situation is that I'm trying to get a working ICS rom working, but I get a black screen on bootup for both Virtuous Quattro and Ice Cold Sandwich. I've also tried different kernels, but the same thing happens.
What I did:
Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery
Backup
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Install zip from sd card > Choose zip > Picked my zip here > Confirm
The actual rom installs with no errors or anything... then when I try to reboot, I get the white screen with "htc" in green font, as normal, then it just goes to a black screen. The backlight is on, but the screen is black... softkeys are not lit, either. Like I said, I've reflashed multiple times to no avail. I've seen videos of people on YouTube flashing on IncS, but their devices go straight to the bootloader animation after the htc logo screen.
Anybody encountered this before or know how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Your phone must be rooted before this and also verify your downloaded zip file with checksum to make sure about proper download.
I actually encountered the same problem a few days ago. I realized it was because I flashed an incompatible Kernal zip file. So I reflashed the ROM and rebooted without flashing any kernals and it worked for me.
I have rooted, and have superuser access. I have also redownloaded and checked the md5 sums. I'll try to download it again and test...
I just redownloaded and rechecked the md5 sums, and I still get the black screen. I've also tried no kernel, and tiamat and still nothing :S

have u converted you filesystem to ext4?
btw, what rom was previous? stock one or custom?
and i recommend you to use 4ext recovery instead of CWM
I have to use CWM for now, since I don't have access to fastboot right now (i'll download it later), but how do I check if it's ext4 or not in CWM? And if its not, do you know how to make it ext4?
And i'm using CM7, not stock

if u have CM7 ur filesystem already converted )))
i think the reason of crashes on boots is old version of recovery. try to upgrade urs CWM or install the latest 4ext recovery
It's very easy to change CWm to 4ext: go to http://4ext.net/ and download 4EXT Recovery Updater, install it. With its help u will instal 4ext
Are you s-off?

I'm not S-OFF, but my bootloader is unlocked... i think it doesn't really matter much in this case if I have/can flash CM7 without issues
I'll try another version of CWM or try 4ext recovery tomorrow sometime

i'm afraid s-on is the reason of ur problems
I completely agree s-on does matter always.
I have the same problem on Quattro.
If you are s on you have to flash via fastboot the boot.img inside the Rom.zip from your wanted rom after flashing Rom via recovery.
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using xda premium
Indeed sniper is correct. However what I would do, get a rom working then look into becoming s-off. Its so much easier to mod your phone after.
Sent from my Incredible S using xda premium
Okay, thanks guys! I'll try it out later and see how it goes by flashing boot.img using fastboot.
Thanks guys, it works!
For people who come here looking for answers, basically just open the new ICS rom zip, extract boot.img, cd to that folder in cmd, and type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
and it should now boot properly.

and it should now boot properly.

Or just make s-off one time and flash roms without any necessity to flash boot.img manually

I have HBOOT 2.0, sadly I accidentally updated my original htc and it updated HBOOT as well... and I can't be bothered to downgrade now lol
I'll do it later when I have the time to download the downgrade toolkit

[Q] Problem installing MIUI 2.5.25 using Rom Manager

Hello,
Today I tried to install MIUI 2.5.25 for my N1 using Rom Manager.
After it's installed it automaticly boots into recovery mode, so i pressed "reboot system now" but it booted into recovery again. So I had to restore my backup.
What could be the problem?

did you do a full wipe ? before installing rom maybe that why is causing your problems
Yes, I checked the options Wipe Data and Cache and Wipe Dalvik cache in Rom manager. Or do I need to do this a different way?

you have to flash it from recovery and do wipe in recovery find the rom you downloaded in rom manger in sd in download folder i think not sure but save that zip/rom in your pc then do full wipe then try installing rom again
That didn't help, it boots into recovery again. Anything else i could have done wrong or forgot about?

blackrose or non blackrose version?
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
I don't know anything about hboot, I just rooted my phone and than I downloaded MIUI and installed it. So I also guess non blackrose version.
As urs is a non blackrose partition its stock.so its not hboot prob..why dont ur try it from the beginning..using recovery..wipe all 2x then flash zip

Still the same problem. Also if I boot into recovery I get a warn sign if it boots and than it doesn't starts recovery mode. If I install CWM again (using rom manager) I can boot into recovery without any problems. I had this a few times now. Could that be the reason?
If you shut down the phone, then hold the trackball and power, you should boot into bootloader (hboot).
You should then have an option to boot into recovery.
ROM Manager only allows you to reboot into CWM and no other recoveries, as far as I know.

Check out the ROM thread, I guess the latest MIUI needs special disk partition. Also post ROM related issues in the thread for quick and appropriate response.
I read about it already, and i wanted to post it there too. But I need to have posted at least 10 posts to post on the development page. But isn't it strange there is a non blackrose version if that one doesn't work anyway? And do you know anything about the warn sign I told about?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA
I'm trying to install blackrose now. I downloaded the latest version but when I launch the blackrose.exe it automaticly closes again. What could be the problem?
BTW, does my bootloader need to be unlocked for this?
No. its not compulsion for bootloader to be unlocked. might be due to bad download. try downloading again and turn off ur anti virus program while doing it.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Thanks! Turning off my anti virus did the trick
Glad it worked buddy. the reason behind it is that Blackrose uses some exploit and it makes antivirus program consider it a threat, while it really isnt

[Q] Flashing stucked cyanogenmod 7 by ROM manager

Guys, i know u can help. I want to flash my N1 to cyanogenmod 7, i know u can help.
I got stock 2.3.4 n1.
I can't unlock bootloader cause i have a broken powerbutton. After i typed "flashboot oem unlock" i need to confirm that by pressing powerbutton, but its broken so i think its not necessary.
So i rooted it with SuperOneClick
I installed ROM manager, backup my stock ROM, than flasing clockwork recovery After reboot i open ROM manager, tapped to install ROM from SD card, choose ROM from SD and rebooted. And now i see only a pic with android it center and yellow exclamation mark. Google says that i have a wrong recovery or wrong installation of clockwork recovery. I waited for couple hours and then get battery off. Now phone boots fine, works fine but i want to flash cyanogenmod. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Before flashing the custom rom, it is recommended to first flash a custom brain. This one seems broken .
You need to have a unlocked bootloader. You cannot do without.
First of all i searched a lot, read a lot here, and i have brains.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Nexus_One/Guides_%26_Tutorials#Flashing_custom_ROM
Here i see:
All i need to flash any ROM is root access, so I can root my phone with unlocking bootloader or use something else
i chose this:
PHP:
Root without unlocking the bootloader.
XDA developers found ways to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader, i.e. without voiding the warranty.
Easy 1-click solution - SuperOneClick
I root my device, install ROM manager, flash custom recovery, reboot.
I want to flash cyanogen mod following instrucions, but its stucks.
Asking again WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Apparently you don't have any brains at all. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. NO FLASHING WITHOUT UNLOCKING. Root does not matter at all! NUFF SAID
Ok, i see.
How can i unlock bootloader without power button?
As i used search i read that its impossible to unlock bootloader, but its possible to flash cyanogen without unlocking it, just root need.
Sorry if i wrong.

You pretty much out of luck if the power button is broken
you dont have to unlock bootloader for flashing roms. just rooting is enuf. i recommend to use 4Ext recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419813
install the app and then install recovery.
backup current rom
place new rom in sd.
boot into recovery.
wipe all partitions except sd x3 times
install zip(rom) from sd
reboot n njoy ur new rom

Can u tell me step by step what i need to do to flash cyanogenmod now?
I installed Clockwork Recovery by Rom manager, but it wont install properly as i think cause if i want to reboot to recovery i se only a yellow exclamation mark in triangle and green android in center.
How to fix this now?
i would recommend you to try 4EXT touch recovery. currently its the best. i have provided the link for that in my previous post. or you can get it from www.4ext.net
also i have mentioned the steps in my previous post. if u still got doubts, feel free to ask buddy

Download the cm7.2 stable ROM from CyanogenMod. Check the md5 to ensure it downloaded correctly.http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=passion
Copy it to the root of your SD card. Boot into recovery (recommend 4ext). Wipe all except SD card. Flash the ROM. Reboot.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA
Forget to mention. If you have loads of apps then you might want to format your SD card and partition with a ext4 partition around 512MB/1GB . Do this using 4ext recovery before you install the ROM.
Of course you need to backup your SD card first if you want to restore media like photos and music. Use titanium backup to backup apps which you can restore later. Install s2e from market to utilise your ext partition once you have the ROM installed

I need to use 4EXT Recovery Updater or 4EXT Recovery Control?
Nevermind it, already installed 4ext recovery control and following instructions installed 4ext recovery touch rc5.
Now i'm going to start flashing. I'll tell u my results.
upd: nothing new. got triangle with yellow "!" inside when trying to boot to recovery, may be i need to flash though 4ext recovery control?

I chose "Online update" in menu, then chose 4ext_recovery_touch rc5. It downloaded successfully, then install something.
After that i got a message:
"New version Recovery successfully installed. Archive with recovery.img saved on SD card: download/4ext_recovery_touch_v1.0.0.5_RC5.zip"
May be i realy have no brains, and i need to install recovery from this .img?
so it seems 4ext recovery is installed successfully. but buddy u cant just fastboot recovery.img file cos ur bootloader is locked.
hw are you trying to enter into recovery? from the options in 4ext recovery updater?

Dont use rom manager!! It had brick many devices! Install cwm 5 touch from squad thru stock recovery its the easyest way to get cwm!!

ROM manager is killing our mini's depending on its mood, don't use it. Flash either CWM4.0.0.5 using Odin (harder way) or just flash CWM5 touch recovery by Squadzone in stock recovery (easy way). The last easy solution has the least chance to something go wrong

mmm, this looks like an update, guess i need the correct installable version first.
got a new problem going on.
i did an "update.zip" file put on the sd-card, after realizing it was not a correct file and did delete the zip file.
Now after reboot into (orriginal recovery mode) the "update.zip" is still an option to use while the cwm-update.zip (wich is actually on the sd-card) is not mentioned.
When trying to use the listed update file i get an error saying "file can't be found on the sd-card"
what to do?

no was a different one. at this time i also did download the update-cwm one.
the update-cwm zip is put on the sd-card but won't be seen by the orriginal recovery mode.
it still sees the other one, wich is actually not on the sd-card anymore
