My friend gave me an unlocked phone with a semi-working touchscreen, a non-working microphone and a wobbly USB port that I was thinking of sending in for warranty.
Unfortunately, as stated before it is unlocked. I looked at both nv_data.bin and /dev/block/bml3 but neither of these seem to hold a Network Control Key, just FFFFFFF.
How can I lock it so I can send it in for warranty?
Can I just change the apparent NCK to some arbitrary hex combination?
Worst comes to worst, I could just send it in the way it is and hope for the best..
i dont think it would make a difference if you sent the phone for repair unlocked.
correct me if im wrong but i dont think unlocking the network lock voids warranty, i think its more down the lines of rooting, customs roms, taking the phone apart ect...
my phone came brand spanking new from vodafone unlocked, but with vodafone bloatware on it
I would like to believe that but:
http://www.wpcentral.com/samsung-carrier-unlock-your-windows-phone-void-your-warranty
However, whether they would notice or not is an entirely different story.
Thats a different device all together tho... How would they know it came 'carrier locked'
like i said mine came direct from vodafone 'unlocked' so if i sent mine for repair they couldnt say no to me.
and that link isnt direct from samsung, for all we know it could be a rumour, i honestly dont think it voids and im sure im not the only one who thinks that.
Like said earlier, Rooting, Customs ROMs ect...... that does void warranty.
Samsung DONT lock phones. Its the providers that lock them to keep you on their network.
A carrier can unlock your phone if and when they want so its not a warranty issue .
jje
Hmm okay, maybe I'll believe you guys . I'll send it out today. We'll continue the discussion if it comes back saying that my warranty is now void lol - let's hope for the best.
Any warranty reject would be due to non standard firmware or non network supplied firmware .
My phone came unlocked from the network as many do .

Did they find out your phone was unlocked???
I've tried goldcard with 3 different SD cards, tried it multiple tiimes even with the instructions from the downgrade bootloader walkthrough thread. Keep getting error 130.
I'm not impressed with the Incredible S so far, not so great signal reception... I sold my Desire for this? should have waited, everything else about it had me sold, but going from vanilla GB (villanROM) on my desire leaves much to be wanted.
I bought it earlier today... i'm considering walking into Bell and returning it for an Atrix.
I've heard that the bell version is tough to crack, but if you want my advice I wouldn't go for an attic, everone I have spoken to has been dissapointed with it. What other choices do you have?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using Tapatalk
Well i'm not sure if they will give full refund next day :S but the guy I bought it from said they do 14 days in store credit for sure.
Bell doesn't really have anything else that interests me, Galaxy S vibrant (meh) and Desire Z 4G (no thanks)
Telus uses the same bands/towers in Canada (that's who my provider is I just unlocked the IS) and they have the Nexus S which I was going to go for at first but no shops have it in stock.
I really should have just sat on my Desire for a while longer. I also have a Motorola Milestone...
I have both the Atrix and the Incredible S. I had similar reception issues on Telus and Bell's HSPA network. So far no issues on Rogers (in Red Deer, AB). I love my Atrix. I got an incredible S for the camera. So for I'm impressed with the incredible S but I did just get it last night.

You should be able to get a refund if the you have the phone for less than 14 days AND the talk time on it is less than 30 minutes.
Cheers

Everyone I ask says the Atrix just isn't what they expected, it looks awesome on paper spec wise, but MotoBlur takes all the fun out of it.
My friend with a Nexus S says it seems very slow compared to his. The IncS has pretty much the same cpu and ram as the Nexus S so I think the advantages of dual core phones are yet to come and see no real world performance benefit as of yet.
I'm giving it some more time, and pretty much just playing with the IncS over wi-fi and testing it out and not using any talk time.
I've unlocked and rooted/updated my Moto Milestone in prep to sell it. I'll give myself a few more days to decide, but with no RUU/OTA working on it i'm left wondering what will be it's future.
Should have kept my Desire until there was more Dev support for either, but I did check through the forums here, I knew it wasn't rooted yet but thought I could get GB on it out of the box.
Spoke to a Bell employee, he told me that they are testing GB for IS atm but couldn't tell me the release date.
If it is just the Android version that's bothering you, I would wait it out.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App
Once you unlock the IS, you can't return it coz it voids the warranty.
But I'm using it on Fido, and I'm having no reception problems at all.
So when bell finally releases the GB update there will be an RUU for us to use for those of us who don't get an OTA right?

I don't really understand why some are saying that sim card unlocked phones won't get OTA. Sim unlocking is not same as rooting the phone, unless the OTA update also checks what carrier you are using lol..

Bell will give you the sim unlock code for 50$ no mention of any voiding of warranty... I bought my unlock from gsmunlock.net, it's the same thing as what the provider would have gave me.

Providers have access to the unlock codes, sorry it was actually Telus I contacted about a sim unlock before selling my Desire on the weekend, HTCs are easily unlockable... i'm sure Bell is the same.
I'm sure it was just an uninformed sales rep, or was just trying to prevent you from going to another provider or them losing the cash they would have made off it lol.
You can unlock here for $25
http://www.htcimeiunlock.com/
I'm positive that unlocking your SIM does not void your HTC warranty whatsoever since it does not alter the phone's software or hardware in any way other then "unlocking" it.
Perhaps it'll void your right to return/exchange the product, but in which case I doubt the store rep will even bother to check if the phone you are returning is unlocked or not...
I used cellunlock.net Google the site name + coupon and you can find a code for 50% off
I unlocked 2 android phones for under 20$ haha, had the code for the HTC in about an hour, the Motor took 24 hours.

Yep! That's what I used, with the 50% off coupon. It came to like $10.
Well, I'm glad to know unlocking it "shouldn't" void the warranty, then. I was pretty upset that a $500 phone wouldn't have any warranty on it.

I had contacted HTC a few weeks ago asking about this. Here's what they said:
With OTA software upgrades, it's a bit iffy. In some circumstances, update sofware is provided to local stores, who should be able to update the phone for you (policies on this differ from carrier to carrier, where some may be okay with updating an unlocked phone, and others won't).
Sometimes, a downloadable version can be found on our website for the phone in question:
http://www.htc.com/ca/support/incredibles-bell/downloads/
Each device has a specific address that it checks for its updates. Theoretically, the unlocking process shouldn't change that. Your device should still continue to recieve updates, however, it really depends on Bell's update policy when it comes to phones no longer on their network.

So my question stands... if Bell decides to be dicks about it (wouldn't put it past them ) and they don't push the OTA to our phones, will we be able to find an RUU somewhere that should work? (possibly on that link in the quote?)
Hi guys
A month ago I had the OTA update problem (the 7mb or so update which broke the phone) and the phone wouldn't turn on properly. The samsung logo was glowing and that's it. I didn't have time back then and just was using another phone. Yesterday, I tried to fix it since I saw that some people fixed it on forums. But unfortunately it did not show any signs of life even though I charged it and tried pressing every button configuration.
1) I wonder if I can still fix this by myself,
if not 2) Do you think services in the states would help me with this given that I haven't bought this device from any US retailer like T-Mobile or AT&T.
Thanks so much for your help!
Best.

Do you guys think that when there's no sign of life at all it's related to a problem in the motherboard?

1.) Don't aggravate the problem and give yourself some slack...
2.) Of course why would they not? you have an unlock version right? you can send that phone for a repair but bear in mind shipping and handling would be taken care of by the shipper itself, and read the repair policies thoroughly. There are a lot of after sale services in many counties and states here in the U.S. But I am not in the best position to give you where and what company I would recommend to you, since that would be tantamount to promoting the service of that company already. Just look for it or google it. I'm sure you'll find a decent one.
Cheers!
Why are you giving this misinformation? Call Samsung USA and they will tell you just like they told me that this phone was not intented to be sold in US and thus Samsung USA will not repair it!!! If you want to, you have to send the phone to the Samsung repair center in the country where the phone was purchased or better intended to be sold.Samsung USA will not help you at all after you give them IMEI number of the phone. This is true story, happened to me with Galaxy S2, bought via Expansys USA intended to be sold in England.

HI
I bought the phone from http://www.technotradinghouse.com earlier this year ( so the manufacturer warranty has not run out)
and I also have the CPS warranty...
What avenues do I have for service ?
I understand the phones have a "limited international warranty" and one can always say that they bought the phone when living in another country...
G
UPDATE:
Called the USA number listed on the Samsung Global website for international warranty.
They told me to send the device to the service center in Hong Kong, as "the device is manufactured in china"
Seriously Samsung still believes US costumers who buy "superior" devices like the N7000 against the "inferior" SGS717 don't
have any knowledge of say the "world map" or where the devices are manufactured these days...
I am all for Samsung, because they have a unlocked bootloder, and good devices in general (in the international marker) otherwise I would have easily switched
to Motorola... but thanks to the US cell-phone-provider dictatorship we will still have the same problems... The downsides of being in a
capitalist country...
The work around for this is to buy the international device from a registered dealer in Mexico, and then avail of the warranty from Samsung Mexico, which
wont be as expensive as sending the device over to "China", I wish some ingenious Mexico entrepreneur setups a ONLINE shop for selling phones to the US
there ain't any... The N7000 is available in Mexico... They don't sell it with a free-AK47, otherwise I would have dared crossing the border here...

So, while I'm still unsure whether to root my Note 4 or not, I would like to discuss about your experiences with warranty centers and whether they care about knox counter or ROM that is running. I live in Europe and as far as rooting is concerned, it looks like we have better laws than people in the other continents. If you, by any chance, already had your phone sent for warranty, can share your experience here and whether your phone was accepted for repairing?

I think I'll try to root. Not sure if repair centers are experienced enough to know about knox counter. I can always just flash the stock rom and just ignore the 0x1. I'll see what others say.
EUROPE has the best warranties, no matter what electronic item you buy. USA has the worst, only 1 year, and you have to fight hard sometimes to get warranty honored. I have a N910C and I am in USA atm, I'm SURE this phone is NOT covered by warranty here because it is not an American model. Similar thing happened to my galaxy S3 i9300, I asked Samsung for a screen replacement, and I was willing to pay, but then they refused because it is an international model.
So if you are in Europe, just root away!

Sometimes that does matter. I bought a Nokia lumia 1520 and even with proof of purchase they wouldn't cover it because it was a 1520 that wasn't made for the European market. I'd have to send it in to that market to get it fixed. I understand completely. But if it were a European device purchased in Europe, they'd have to fix it. So yes, you can root and have it under warranty unless you actually change the software or hardware to a point that it burns out the phone... Besides that, you're pretty much golden.
I haven't had a need to send in my phone yet, but I did report an issue(pocket wake/pocket dialing because of home button wake) that I as a user could only fix by rooting (I don't plan on rooting) and the service rep told me they'd "reset" the phone once(flash stock firmware, and set counter to 0)
Sony's service really surprised me once.
I had dropped a flashlight right on my e-reader's screen causing a few pixels to rupture, and they fixed it for free even though that kind of damage could only come from mishandling.
Thanks!!! I already rooted my Note 4!!! So good to be back here after the awesome Note II development! And yes, I live in Europe and my phone is from here!
Any news for Germany carriers. .I want to root my note 4 and i am not sure for warranty. .
Regarding Italy I don't have firsthand experience (and knock on wood I won't have to), but from what I'm reading on forums they don't honor the warranty if knox 0x1.

Why Samsung KNOX trigger bothers us - and should not!
The link redirects you to an older post of mine, where I explain, what KNOX really does and in which way it is important to us.
The shortcut to my answer is, you can give a sh** about Knox. Knox is only interesting for enterprise purposes.
in Mexico, carrier telcel, rooting does not void warranty, they even accept your device without proof of purchase, if it was sold by them
Note 4 housing
Hey guys
Have anyone gone back to try to replace the housing of the phone?
It s a bit scratched up, I understand I would need to pay for it. That is fine. But to do so would warranty or Knox 0x1 come into play and have them rejecting me?
Thank you
They MUST repair your phone here in Holland. Even if it is rooted and flashed with other firmware
i wrote to one of the certified repair centers in my town (Kaunas, Lithuania. Europe) . Asking specificly if i loose the warranty fully or retain any of it (like if it's a software failure i have to pay but if it's hardware i can get off) and they replied that they count the warranty voided under any circumstances if the knox is tripped.
i'll try to write to the samsung reps, see what their stand on this is. maby if i tripped knox and carried the phone to the service they would take it as long as i don't run in screaming that my knox is 0x1......

I wonder if it's the same in Belgium.
In the UK, no dice.
I contacted the carphone warehouse after my wifi refused to connect and when it did connect, would drop out within a few minutes. the list of wifi networks would just show disabled.
I took it to the carphone warehouse in newcastle, was able to reproduce the problem with their in store wifi.. I booked it in for repair. They sent it off for repair I think since it took 10 days.
When I went back, He told me that the device had been rooted in the past, gave me the phone back with "user error" on the receipt. So if you trip the warranty knox counter, they wont touch it.
Phone sold for spares.
Today my hardware buttons on my S8 stopped working completely. I called Tmobile and there solution was for me to go to Samsung at Best buy and flash the OS system. When I expressed that this would not probably work as I just did a fresh reset they reluctantly offered a warranty exchange. I believe that either Samsung or Tmobile are now trying to get away from warranty replacements which cause me to ask why have insurance. Also apparently Tmobile has changed its JOD program again and will not allow you to jump to the same device anymore regardless of color.
Anyone else have this issue?
??? So fif you buy the phone through tmobile directly or through best buy? If through tmobile they shouldnt have tomd ypu to go to bestbuy . You had a defective phone and they need tonhonor the warranty replacement. Additionally theres no reason you should worry aboutusing a Jump in a situation like this

I have never had that. When ever I called or went to T-Mobile store with a hardware failure, they had the option for exchange, but for a refurbished device. You might as well go to best buy and see what they say, but in any case you have the right to go through T-Mobile if device is under warranty and was purchased through them.

I don't remember, but I think at the time(~2011?) when T-Mobile phones were offered in Best Buy stores, the carrier didn't sell iPhone yet and possibility that T-Mobile phones/services were not selling well compared to other carriers. That could be the reason Best Buy and/or T-Mobile decided not to anymore.
