(Q) If i update to 4.04 will i lose root? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running LQ2 on my Note and its rooted via Dr Ketan guide. If i update to 4.04 will i loose root and simply need to re-root device or does everything stay the same as its onlya minor update?

I think you will loose root and will only have to re-root with the same method :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28589629&postcount=61
I was on LQ2, downgraded to GB LA6 (wipe/factory reset) and flashed LRG + apply the root method. Everything working - just follow the guide.
Note that as mentionned in several threads here, it is not safe to factory reset/wipe on ICS due to the risk of bricking your Note.

Thanks for reply.

[Q] OTA Update for stock ROM

Hi,
I have just rooted my new Galaxy Note using Dr. Ketan's method (the one that uses PC Odin). I stuck with the stock ROM, though, and have no plans of using a custom ROM just yet.
There is an OTA update from Samsung, though. Will going through the update unroot my device? Is it safe to update? What should I keep in mind?

ota will most likely unroot the phone
Thanks. So how do I update a stock ROM?

[Q] Cant update phone!

Why is this i go to settings software update download thew whole 300mb and then phone restarts and says failed.. every thing the same on the phone when i got it its just been rooted and have golauncher thats all cheers
I too had the same problem but then i reverted back to the stock kernel from here before updating and voila it helped. :good:
Sorry am abit of noob there loads of links on.there which one is it and what will.this do.. Will I loose any thing ..

It is like you have to check your baseband version from settings>about phone and find the related kernel. Sometimes a custom kernel doesn't allow updating so better to be on stock while updating through OTA.

U cant update your phone through ota while rooted so loose your root then udate and root again
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Revert back to stock using Odin, then update with ota, and proceed to root.

Or just flash a custom ICS ROM from GB so you don't have to deal with any OTA updates
If you do go for stock, please be careful of the emmc bug present in stock ics kernels. Learn about it before making the jump.

Unable to upgrade by Samsung Kies (custom kernel)

Hi, I want to update Stock ICS ROM (found from Sammobile available in my region). When I connected to Samsung Kies, it shows "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies". Possibly due to custom kernel, I guess.
Currently I'm using Notecore v12.5 kernel on Stock ICS ROM (DXLR2 - my region). Do I need to flash back Stock kernel first (from XDA thread) following the same as my current ROM version?
Thanks for your help.

Not guaranty even after flashing stock kernel you may get it. But sure you can try. If your installed rim is not for your region still it wont allow to update, in that case update using Odin.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
You need to be full stock but also you need to match your csc with the rom to be able to use kies...
I encourage you to flash a gb stock via odin and once in gb change the csc as it requires a wipe and wiping in ICS stock kernel its not safe..
Don't know if you can change csc in a custom kernel... SO someone like dr. Ketan could guide you better in this... In order to avoid going back to gb to change the csc

Thanks for your reply, Dr. Ketan.
I've tried flashing back Stock kernel downloaded from your thread Anyhow, still unable to upgrade by Kies. Checked firmware version shows on Kies, looks like PDA & CSC version incompatible even I chose the same kernel version
Shall I clear cache & Dalvik? Which method much safer on stock ICS?
If all still not working, perhaps I need to re-flash using PC Odin.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
No wipe is safer on stock ics.
Reflash notecore, full wipe then flash ics using pc odin
Then again reflash notecore n finally reset counter. This shud b easiest n safest way.

Noted. If I don't want to full wipe (take time to re-install since I don't use any backup apps), can I still flash Stock ICS 4.0.4? Means that after flashing all will restore to factory default & root missing?

Yes you can flash stock ICS 4.0.4 without wipe too.
If you flash nonwipe version(My stock ICS ROM thread listing contains only Nonwipe), still your data will be intact, but No root.
But, If anything goes wrong you have to wipe compulsory and you will lose data. another thing is clean flashing always give you better performance.
So in case of you want to keep data, use mobile odin. like this
1-Reflash Custom kernel to get root access(i doubt you may have partial root.If you having full root, you can escape this step)
2-Backup with Titanium
3-wipe cache and data(here only if you have safe kernel, otherwise skip)
4-Reflash ICS
5-Reflash custom kernel
6.Wipe cache and data, if you have note did on step3
7-Restore data wit Titanium

Thanks for your guidance. I will try first suggestion to flash Stock ICS ROM without full wipe. Previously downloaded non-wipe Stock ICS ROM from Sammobile See if this work fine for everything. Then only install back Notecore v13.

Dr. Ketan,
I reflashed Stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM, but the Superuser still exists. I connected to Kies & it still doesn't support upgrade by Kies. The root should be missing, isn't it? But, it still exists.
Don't know where it goes wrong.

Also, notice from Kies, current firmware version as :
PDA:LR2 / PHONE:LR1 / CSC:LR1 (XXX)
I thought if CSC same as kernel & follows PDA version, it should be LR2 (XME) ; XME - my region.
Any idea? Thanks

B'coz you must have updated supersu from market in previous.rooted rom. That install as non system appl, which can't remove by flashing rom, you need to uninstall update before flashing ROM.

Dr. Ketan, you are right. I updated SuperSU from Google Play. I did not remove it while flashing Stock ICS ROM.
Afterwards, I tried to flash latest version DXLR5 (my region) downloaded from Sammobile. It managed to clear my SuperSU from menu & About Phone shows the same version.
Note : I found SMS can't send or receive. Even I manually key in phone number of Operator's SMSC.
However, it still doesn't support upgrade by Kies. I guess likewise you said due to CSC / kernel incompatible
If so, how can I change back to Stock firmwares to get back ori PDA/Kernel/Modem/CSC (since I reflashed Stock ICS ROM directly still helpless)?
Shall I flash back to Stock GB ROM & do full wipe first? Then, install back Stock ICS ROM? Lastly, can flash Notecore v13 kernel?
Thanks for your help

Find out any GB ROM which was available for your country, then flash it using PC odin.
Then check your CSC by *#272*IMEI#, if it is not same as it shud be, then manually change it from list available there. This will hard reset your device, then you should be able to get update on Kies.
PS: Practically i dont feel any importance to have correct CSC. You can use your country Modem if you have any issue with SMS or mobile service related issue on foreign ROM.

Noted, Dr. Ketan. I have Stock GB 2.3.6 ROM (from Sammobile) & will flash via PC Odin & do full wipe from there.
Just checked *#272*IMEI#, it shows XME (my region). Guess why it can't upgrade by Kies
Again, thank you

Oh, yes, Dr. Ketan. If I flash back Notecore v13, is it necessary to upgrade SuperSU from Google Play? Or just leave it as existing version pre-installed with Notecore kernel? Which is advisable?

To know what firmware is upgradable via kies yu can install/use CheckFusDownloader.

Thanks for recommendation. Mostly I update by OTA. As I saw firmware update available in my region from Sammobile, hence I click OTA but not found. Then I try using Kies but it shows that msg.
So, I wonder why Kies can't upgrade since there is no issue for the past.
P/S : My friend told me he got update from OTA (not rooted his phone with Stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM)

[Q] which kernel for N7000JPLA1 can make root also

I have GB stock rom 2.3.6 N7000JPLA1, and i want to root it, I read it is not directly rootable and must downgrade and root then upgrade.
So, is there any kernel to use that has root also in one step rather than downgrade, root then upgrade?
Follow this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
If you want to upgrade to ics then first update, b'coz rooting is easy on ICS.
Otherwise as said above follow that link
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
But I heard that speedmod kernel can be installed over GB and will make the root also, is this correct?
No, neither of ics kernel will work on gb rom

But i think speedmod k1 and k2 are for gb.Isn't it??
For GB there is abyss and Cf root kernel also there. I said ICS kernel won't work.
Fundamentally it has no meaning to raise counter just by using custom kernel for GB for getting root, If you want to update. Here OP suggest he wants update.
ultimately if you want to update to ICS, best way is to go clean with PC odin and ICS rooting will take just 5 min to root.

Downgrade Note from 4.1.2 to 4.0.4

Hi,so I read a lot of articles about this and I'm aware of the brick bug so I checked my Note with the emmc brick bug check and it showed that I have a sane chip.I got my Note with 4.1.2 and I'm not rooted and I don't need root.So my question is can I safely downgrade to ICS and upgrade it back to JB if I wanted to?I really do not want to mess something up before I begin.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Yes you can if you follow proper procedures and take precautions.
That is if I follow the Odin Pc procedure of flashing? And ofcourse not doing the factory or any kind of wipe/reset on ICS?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
On ICS, just dont do any Wipe while on stock ICS kernel.. You can install a safe kernel like Speedmod / Philz (for ICS ofcourse) and then perform wipes.
- When downgrading from JB to ICS using odin, it may end up in a boot loop.. its better to wipe data while on JB then flash ICS using Odin.
Will try today.I like the older ICS Touchwiz more.

True. It was snappier.
