Charging Nexus 7 - travel charger

Hi all,
Can I please get some advice from someone who might know better than me. I have been using the following charger on my travels to charge an iPad and Samsung galaxy nexus at the same time:

I've just plugged my nexus 7 in on its own and I get nothing.
I didn't think the nexus would need a higher amp than the iPad? The Asus plug that's charging the nexus says its 2amp and the travel charger says its 6.5amp. Am I being amazingly blind or stupid here?
And if I need a new travel charger for my trips into Europe can I have some advice on what to buy before I buy something else useless.

Nexus 7 trouble with other chargers
I see the same issue.
The Nexus 7 charger lists: Output 5.0V===2.0A, Nexus 7 will charge.
iPad 2's charger shows: Output 5.1V===2.1A;Max 10Watt, Nexus 7 will not charge,
Philips universal charger: Output 5V===2A; Max 10Watt, Nexus 7 will not charge.
Blackberry phone charger Output 5V===500mA, Nexus 7 will not charge.
Blackberry phone charger Output 5V===700mA, Nexus 7 will charge.

To answer the OP: The Amazon product page clearly states Output 5.0 VDC / 1000 mA max. N7 needs 2000 mA (2A). Derping in public again. Don't mind me. :silly:
To add to the list:
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Charger: Output 5V ⎓ 2A; Max 10Watt, Nexus 7 will charge.
XtremeMac IPU-IH2-11: Output 5V ⎓ 4.2A (2.1A per port); Max 20Watt, Nexus 7 will not charge. (Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 charges though.)
The N7 seems very picky about chargers, unfortunately. My XtremeMac is now powering my charge cables for my wireless mouse and keyboard, freeing up 2 USB ports, so not all is lost I guess.

I have a 2.1a car charger, but it doesn't charge it.

EDIT: Interesting. It will not work on the car charger wiht my "charging only cable" which has shorted out datapins to register as an AC source. But, it does charge on a normal USB cable.

I have a tf201 charger (here i refer to the usb block, not the cable) that seems to super charge the nexus 7, that is to say, very fast. The tf201 charger is 18 watts. Also, I have noticed my usb 2.0 ports on my desktop will not charge the n7, but my usb 3.0 ports will.

Basically, we should be able to build (or eventually buy) some type of adapter to enable proper charging with any 2A charger after we figure out exactly what the charger is doing. I wouldn't be surprised if all Asus tablet chargers already worked properly without an adapter.

This answer is clouding up a lot of legitimate discussions. The current rating doesn't matter to this conversation at all. If the current is above 0 the device should show the charging icon. If not, there is some other problem.

You are correct that my remark about the OP's charger's current was not a valid point. I have stricken it from the record.
That said, some serious weirdness is going on with the N7 regardless. On the XtremeMac charger the N7 will charge. But incredibly slowly, and the battery status reads as discharging, even though the line on the battery graph is rising. I don't even know where to begin in trying to explain that.

Agreed. I bought a pair of dual 2A chargers and neither of them will charge it at all (no charging icon). I tried shorting the data lines and still nothing. The dual charger that came with my Razr will charge it slowly (about 16 hours from 0 to 100%). My old 700ma Blackberry charger works just better than anything other than the OEM charger. Frustrating and I don't want to keep ordering different chargers with my fingers crossed.

I don't know what a XtremeMac charger is, but I'm assuming it's for charging an iphone or ipad or something? the Nexus 7 and the apple products don't share the same charger design, so the Nexus is probably only drawing 500mA while charging from it.

You can also add the MonoPrice 8856 charger to the list that do not work with Nexus 7

Mine is charging with Galaxy Nexus 5.0v 1.0A charger.

I have two chargers that work.
1: Nokia 1.2a fast charger
2: Blackberry 1.8a charger
both have integrated charging cables, which are 6ft in length.

The Asus transformer prime which is a USB charger with proprietary cord also has something weird. Other USB chargers with the same power specs connected with the Asus USB cable won't charge the prime. Or they charge where it literally takes like 24 hours to reach 100 percent.
There's something different in that Asus power plug on both devices it seems.

I'm not sure what It's output is but the standard Verizon branded micro usb charger does a great job charging my N7. I think they for sell around $30 in the VZW stores tho.

The 1.0a charger that came with my LG Revo works great, almost as fast stock. I bought 2 extra of that charger on amazon about 9months ago for under 10 for the pair.
Also the charger for my old Droid (.7a iirc) works as well, but it's slow as hell with the screen off, and barely keeps up with just web surfing.

The Charger with the HTC Desire seems to be charging - though slowly as its a 1A charger.

Does anyone know whether the International Samsung Galaxy S II charger works?

The TF101 charger works great, and fast too - about 1% a minute.

My Samsung SG2 (i777) charger seems to work with the N7

Buzzing AC / wall charger / adapter

Anyone else dealing with this? It was so loud when I went to sleep last night I had to get back up and hunt the room to find the source.
It's the wall charger. It buzzes when plugged into the wall, with or without the USB cable attached, but only without the phone ALSO attached and charging.
I come from a Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus and neither of those had this issue (nor any other wall charger for the myriad of electronic devices I've owned).
I'm not gonna reach around under the desk to unplug the adapter from the wall each time I'm done using it with the phone.
My usage scenario is probably really common in that I leave it and the USB cable plugged in, with the phone end of hte USB sitting on my desk. Plug the phone in to charge, otherwise phone is elsewhere. So, more often than not there is no phone plugged in, and it's thus buzzing.
Of course, Google can't or won't just send a replacement charger - they want to do a complete warranty return of the phone and everything. Such a major hassle for a small simple piece.
Does anyone know if the LG Optimus G has the same charger? I'm tempted to go to some local cell shop and try some other of the same charger to see if the problem is beyond my particular unit.

Happens to me too. As long as it charges I'm going to keep using it. If it goes I have a couple backups. I wouldn't return the phone though. Just pick up an after market charger and you should be fine.

Having the same issue, really annoying. There seem to be many faulty units...
But I fear they won't just replace them for free, because they are working well, just with this annoying noise. :S

IMO its just a charger. My phone is fine so if I have to use another I will. Walmart has some for like 10 or 12 bucks. But your right, charger shouldnt be faulty with that annoying buzzing sound.

Mine does the same and its only when the phone is unplugged from it. It takes a little while to build up the buzz. Its like they used a low budget capacitor or something. Who knows..

Same here, doesn't do it when the phone is plugged in so I don't really care. You can only hear it if you are right beside it.

Have the exact same issue with my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 charger...

This is the 3rd nexus I've had due to various faulty reasons and all 3 have had the buzzing in the earpiece and an even louder annoying as hell buzz in the wall charger. The last 2 also have the rattle while the first didn't but I don't care anymore I still love this phone and will live with the annoyance. I don't really hear the earpiece buzzing unless it's silent in the room

Mine doesn't buzz, but squeals at a high pitch (15+KHz). It's not a constant tone, but warbles up and down in volume making it almost impossible to ignore. Swapped to the charger for an old iPhone one I had lying around. It only has a 1A rather than a 1.2A output, so it'll charge a little slower, but it's worth it to avoid the racket.

I am having the same issue is yours charging really slow some time I left mine overnight and it was around 25 :banghead:

Having the same issue as well with my charger. Very annoying. After I unplug it from the wall it still buzzes for about 30 seconds then stops.

Buzzing is just a capacitor inside charger.
When there is nothing connected capacitor is getting current, but with phone connected current goes to your phone.
Buzzing last even after charger unplugged because capacitor is like a temporary storage and gets discharged in few seconds.
Capacitors prevent power fluctuations, and help prevent ditect damage to device if there are fluctuations in power supply board.
Nothing to worry about it, many industries use capacitors to maintain their power factor (voltage/current) ratio.

Yep, experiencing this problem too. Personally, it's really annoying for me, the charger is just 30-40 cm away from my head when I'm sleeping.
I wonder if I could use another charger, I've one with OUTPUT of 5.0V and 700mA, that should be fine right?

Who's worried about it? It's annoying and obnoxious.
Person above: any USB charger is fine. The higher the possible current, the faster the charge (to a point, the phone will only ask up to a certain amount)

Yeh I have this on my UK charger.
It is recommended to unplug/switch off at the wall anyhow as a charger will be using power even when not connected to the phone.

An ancient 'wall-wart' transformer PSU maybe, but a modern switch-mode PSU will be using a handful of milli-Watts at most when idle. Not really worth unplugging to save power: home electricity is measured in units of 1kWh; at 10mW, you'd have to leave the charger plugged in for over 11 years to use 1 unit.

mine buzzes very loud too. both my nexus s chargers also buzz but not as loud as the LG one.

All the phone chargers iv used have got pretty warm when I've accidentally left them plugged in with no phone. They are using power so it just seems common sense to unplug (or switch off at the wall, which is what I do in the uk).
I'm not sure where you got your numbers but a quick Google found these :

I have the same problem with my Nexus 4 charger. Decided to use my Sony Ericsson Xperia charger instead.

This problem still annoys the hell out of me because my charger is next to my bed and I can hear it all night if I don't have my phone plugged in.

About slow charging....

I have seen a few people say they have noticed slow charging with the Nexus 7. I'm not sure if the following means anything, but here is what I have noticed between the two N7's that I have and the one that my brother owns.
My brothers 16GB N7 (purchased 2-3 weeks ago) is extremely slow charging from both the wall and USB power sources Using the OEM cable, and after market, and when trying an iPad wall adapter. No matter what, it's just SLOW.
I purchased a 32GB about a week ago, and have noticed that, while still slow compared to my iPad 3 and iPhone 5, it charges faster than my brothers, so we set them side by side @ 40% and while I should have recorded the time, mine had reached 87 % while his was only at 80%.
A few days ago I realized that while ai sit on the train so much that having celular would probably be a better idea and I missed having it on the iPad which I had sold to buy the N7(aside from missing LTE I do not regret this move one bit). So I sold the 32GB to a friend and bought the 32 W/ 3G. This one though charges noticeably faster than even the last 32GB did. I am running the same kernel and a CM branded ROM, but it doesn't seem to suffer from the slow charging as much, still not iPad3 recharge speed though.
I am wondering if Google/ASUS are changing firmware on different revisions to fix this issue as I see no other reason for the charging speeds to be so different.
** On a side note while my brothers 16GB had no screen lift, my 32GB had lift. I opened it and found that, while face down on the table, the top right screw was 2/3 unscrewed and while tightening it I saw that the screw about an inch or so down from it for the screen was missing all together. Luckily my 3G doesn't have any lift, at least not that I have noticed yet.

I think I saw something straight from a google higher up mentioned to developers that a different power controller would be implemented as a hardware revision on later n7s. I would assume most if not all 3g models are using this new power controller.

My 3G 32GB charges pretty fast .. quicker than the 16GB that is for sure .

i had a seven that was replaced recently, 16gb, because it stopped charging. that seven always charged slow. the replacement seven, also 16gb, charges much faster than the older one. same charger/usb used on both devices.

The stock Asus charger has always been slow to charge my C9O 16GB N7. Using my TouchPad charger instead the N7 charges significantly faster. The Asus charger has since been relegated to charging phones.

My nexus 7 used to charge fairly quickly, around 90 minutes from zero to full. But recently I plugged it in and after an hour it was not charging at all. I unplugged the cable and it looked a little charred, and the socket itself had a slight burning smell. I've used the official charger only, but I think something has gone wrong, it note takes hours to reach a full charge, so think I need to return mine.

Mine was connected to the socket about eight hours while I was asleep since yesterday (when I got it). It charged only from 25% to about 80%, though I remember the screen was lit up, and I turned it off some time during the night.

When I was in stock ROM it was fast but now on paranoid android 2.54 it's very slow.....

My C80K is picky about what chargers I use with it. It's fine and quick with the Asus charger that came with it, and the Samsung charger that came with my phone, but doesn't charge very quickly on my mom's Motorola charger (still reasonable though) and takes 10+ hours to charge fully on a generic charger I bought at Five Below (which is ridiculous). It charges off the USB ports on my computer slower than the Asus and Samsung chargers. I still use the generic charger for my phone though, and it works fine.

Please, define slow in minutes/hours and if not using the original Asus charger, also mention the output current, which the 3rd party gives. Otherwise it just talking . Asus charher is 10W, whereas a phone charger is usually below 5W - it is normal to charge slow.

I have noticed that charging is slow with mine (32gb model). It will normally take around 6-7 hours from around 10% battery life to be fully recharged. I have also noticed that the device will not charge when in graphically intensive apps e.g games. In fact, it will slowly decrease.

I got mine from digigood, so it came with an original US charger (I'm in UK) and digigood supplied a universal microUSB charger.
I've not timed it, but a full charge from empty takes approx. 3 and a half to 4 hours. Someone in this thread said theirs took 90 minutes... I also have a blackberry charger which is micro usb, and I have an OEM galaxy s3 charger too. I think I'll time each from empty and see what happens.

I'm on my 3rd n7 (got 16gb at release, then 32 when it came out, then got a replacement for that as the screen had a few dead pixels). The 16gb is very picky about the charging cable, using the stock cable it charges quite quick (maybe slightly slower than the 32) but using an extension with the stock cable the power actually falls very very slowly, and an overnight charge only adds about 50%
The 32 however, is lightning fast, a full charge only takes about 3hours. I can put it on charge for 20 minutes and get about 20-30% charge.

Above is using the standard Asus charger and cable.
My N7 16GB charges slowly if using my Motorola DroidX charger and cable.

Huh????? My 32 N7 takes 4 hours to o charge.....

For reference, mine took ~5 hrs to charge fully from 0 to 100. Nexus 7 32G WiFi.
Using wall charger. 2A current.

I just took my 16 gig off the charger put it on at 14% 30 minutes ago and it is sitting at 56% now mine is only a couple weeks old

Can we get (Fast Charge) to work on the N7 like they have working on the GN? I love it on my GN.
I know fast charge is for pc usb charging only.

Last night mine was completely dead. Plugged in the supplied charger at 10pm. Battery is now 97% after 7.5 hours

Charging Issues, special cable and charger needed

Just picked up this phone and I love it. On stock 4.1.2 I have charging issues where the phone will only charge with a very good charger capable of putting out >1A and a beefier cable.
Which rules out charging from computer and some shoddier chargers. This is a deal breaker for me.
I will go ahead with rooting and upgrading OS to custom, if someone can verify that this will be a non issue after completing that? Thanks.
Edit: further when streaming netflix and charging, the chargers can't keep up with about 30% screen brightness. Will also be resolved?

how many chargers don't output 1a or greater these days? im using a htc hd2 charger that's nearly 4 years old and a generic usb cable and have no issues charging the phone

Well for the second point I'm even using a 2A charger and and its charged 3% in 2 hours, with netflix, which seems more like a software issue.

and have you rebooted the phone? I had issues like that on my old galaxy note, a reboot often fixed it due to other processes and apps running in the background

I also am struggling to find a decent cable to charge my phone with.
The supplied cable charges it very quickly, but is a little too short to comfortably use the phone while it's charging.
I have purchased a couple of longer cables that seem to be of decent quality (24 awg), but the time to charge the phone fully increases dramatically when using them.
This is all when using the supplied charger.

Tried the reboot, still the same issue. I think I've realized the problem and it looks like software.
I have a kill-a-watt meter. With screen on, and netflix streaming, for some reason its only drawing 3.3W. @ 5V this is only .66A. Clearly too low to charge with. However when I turn the screen off, after a few seconds draw goes to 8.2W, ~1.6A. Now I'm not concerned with staying on the stock OS, however do people still have trouble with this on custom OS?

Sweird...I've never noticed any slow charging on my 6606. I've used a few old chargers from HTC , nexus and Samsung. My Motorola Bluetooth charger however doesn't charge very fast at all but I'd expect it not to.

Its not the best to use ur phone to much while charging tbh. It might kill u battery quickly and damage the phone itself.

Slow Charging??

Anyone else getting slow charging on SM-T810?
Using the bundled charger, I am getting average of only 680mA .... Definitely nothing over 950mA and that is even when screen is off...
Using the same charger and cable on my sony xperia Z3 easily achieve 1400mA ...
Same sort of numbers with other chargers etc... So pretty sure it is device not charger...

I just tested and am getting around 1500 mA. That is with my nexus 6 charger.
Bundled charger gives me around 1460 mA.

Are you certain it`s not the app that is wrong as the S2 is new and the app might not have been updated yet, Try the Samsung charging app below, you have to keep pressing the refresh button on the free version.

The charging rate can be anything from 300mAh to the maximum the power adapter can output, the tablet will determine the amount of power it will accept, and will jump from fast to slow charge depending on how much more power is needed until it reach 100%.

I tried the Samsung app above ... Sort of showed similar values ....
I did a charge from 69% to full and it took about 1.5 hours... So would be maybe 5 hours to charge fully?? Unless the device does much quicker charging at very low battery??
I will do a full discharge down to say 5% and then charge from there and see how I go.

I would install battery monitor widget from 3c on the play store.
A pretty comprehensive battery app and will give you a full history and time line of charging and discharging cycles.

Normally it will trickle charge slow once it reach approximate 80%, and is normally fast if the unit is almost power empty.

It's annoying. I've tried both ipad chargers and a 2.4A charger, but it will go to slow charging mode with anything else than the bundled charger.

Yeah i have found exactly the same!! Must be some sort of Samsung handshake protocol...

There is another thread on this that I have mentions about this, just use a good quality charger, or just go for a Qualcomm QC 2.0 charger from any known brand like htc, aukey, xpower, lots to name, just searh Qualcomm site for a full list.
It won't used the QC2.0, but all should work just like the OEM Samsung one

the ipad charger should be pretty high quality though, so I don't get why it's being so picky.

If you also followed the tab S thread, it's also been mentioned, Samsung tabs S are also picky, and yes all apple stuff don't work.
Should I rephrase it and say some good quality charger will work, even branded ones like sony may not even work, but my intital testing, most QC 2.0 charger will work.

The issue is that I'm trying to find one charger that will charge both my tab s2 and my iphone 6+ quickly. Any idea how qc chargers fare with iphones? The bundled tab s2 charger only gave my iphone 0.4A (it charges the tablet at 1.5A)

I have both sony and asus chargers with included cables work perfectly with iphones and sony xperia z3 and nexus 7... Hopeless with S2.... But s2 charger works fine with them..

Odd, my old Nexus 7 2012 charger fast-charges my S2 710 without any issue at all. I had it spare as the N7 died on me (the S2 is its replacement) and was initially wondering myself as I had a few supposedly 2A chargers at home which only slow-charged the S2 (or indeed under Android 5.0.2 said it wasn't charging at all, even though it evidently was, but 5.1.1 has fixed that).
That said this is a charger without fixed cable (but with a decent USB cable) and I know from Raspberry Pi experience that the cable is almost as important as the charger for getting decent charging (ie enough current) to the device on the far end.

I would make sure the USB cable is a decent one intended for charging.
Proper charging USB cables have the shield connected at both ends for use as ground which is why they are notably thicker.

I agree, a good quality cable is required, as well as the charger itself, I'm using a magnetic cable and a reversible micro USB cable with a OEM Samsung, Aukey and Xpower charger, I don't get the speed of the QC 2.0, but it isn't suppose to as the S2 is not QC 2.0 compatible, but it does charge pretty quick, it also charges my ipod 4, and my nw-ZX2 work without any problems.

I get the "slow charging" message when using the Galaxy Tab S2 bundled charger.
If I use the charger from my Note 4 (Exynos) I get faster charging and no "slow" warning.
Did Samsung bundle it with the slow charger??

I can confirm that samsung did in fact bundle the tab s2 WITHOUT a quick charge usb charger.
I also thought the tab s2 didnt come with quick charge. I have extremely slow charge times but my battery lasts for DAYS... I can fully charge it, put it in airplane mode and check on it after 2 days and be at 98-99% battery.
I also use the quick charge cable AND the quick charge usb adapter that came with my note 5 and the tab still slow charges..

Here the same problem use Samsung charger and cable charge from 20% to 100% in 6 hrs and when use HUAWEI cable with Samsung charger It charged in 2 hrs
I guess Samsung have poor quality cable *-*
