About slow charging.... - Nexus 7 General

I have seen a few people say they have noticed slow charging with the Nexus 7. I'm not sure if the following means anything, but here is what I have noticed between the two N7's that I have and the one that my brother owns.
My brothers 16GB N7 (purchased 2-3 weeks ago) is extremely slow charging from both the wall and USB power sources Using the OEM cable, and after market, and when trying an iPad wall adapter. No matter what, it's just SLOW.
I purchased a 32GB about a week ago, and have noticed that, while still slow compared to my iPad 3 and iPhone 5, it charges faster than my brothers, so we set them side by side @ 40% and while I should have recorded the time, mine had reached 87 % while his was only at 80%.
A few days ago I realized that while ai sit on the train so much that having celular would probably be a better idea and I missed having it on the iPad which I had sold to buy the N7(aside from missing LTE I do not regret this move one bit). So I sold the 32GB to a friend and bought the 32 W/ 3G. This one though charges noticeably faster than even the last 32GB did. I am running the same kernel and a CM branded ROM, but it doesn't seem to suffer from the slow charging as much, still not iPad3 recharge speed though.
I am wondering if Google/ASUS are changing firmware on different revisions to fix this issue as I see no other reason for the charging speeds to be so different.
** On a side note while my brothers 16GB had no screen lift, my 32GB had lift. I opened it and found that, while face down on the table, the top right screw was 2/3 unscrewed and while tightening it I saw that the screw about an inch or so down from it for the screen was missing all together. Luckily my 3G doesn't have any lift, at least not that I have noticed yet.

I think I saw something straight from a google higher up mentioned to developers that a different power controller would be implemented as a hardware revision on later n7s. I would assume most if not all 3g models are using this new power controller.

My 3G 32GB charges pretty fast .. quicker than the 16GB that is for sure .

i had a seven that was replaced recently, 16gb, because it stopped charging. that seven always charged slow. the replacement seven, also 16gb, charges much faster than the older one. same charger/usb used on both devices.

The stock Asus charger has always been slow to charge my C9O 16GB N7. Using my TouchPad charger instead the N7 charges significantly faster. The Asus charger has since been relegated to charging phones.

My nexus 7 used to charge fairly quickly, around 90 minutes from zero to full. But recently I plugged it in and after an hour it was not charging at all. I unplugged the cable and it looked a little charred, and the socket itself had a slight burning smell. I've used the official charger only, but I think something has gone wrong, it note takes hours to reach a full charge, so think I need to return mine.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

Mine was connected to the socket about eight hours while I was asleep since yesterday (when I got it). It charged only from 25% to about 80%, though I remember the screen was lit up, and I turned it off some time during the night.

When I was in stock ROM it was fast but now on paranoid android 2.54 it's very slow.....

My C80K is picky about what chargers I use with it. It's fine and quick with the Asus charger that came with it, and the Samsung charger that came with my phone, but doesn't charge very quickly on my mom's Motorola charger (still reasonable though) and takes 10+ hours to charge fully on a generic charger I bought at Five Below (which is ridiculous). It charges off the USB ports on my computer slower than the Asus and Samsung chargers. I still use the generic charger for my phone though, and it works fine.

Please, define slow in minutes/hours and if not using the original Asus charger, also mention the output current, which the 3rd party gives. Otherwise it just talking . Asus charher is 10W, whereas a phone charger is usually below 5W - it is normal to charge slow.

I have noticed that charging is slow with mine (32gb model). It will normally take around 6-7 hours from around 10% battery life to be fully recharged. I have also noticed that the device will not charge when in graphically intensive apps e.g games. In fact, it will slowly decrease.

I got mine from digigood, so it came with an original US charger (I'm in UK) and digigood supplied a universal microUSB charger.
I've not timed it, but a full charge from empty takes approx. 3 and a half to 4 hours. Someone in this thread said theirs took 90 minutes... I also have a blackberry charger which is micro usb, and I have an OEM galaxy s3 charger too. I think I'll time each from empty and see what happens.

I'm on my 3rd n7 (got 16gb at release, then 32 when it came out, then got a replacement for that as the screen had a few dead pixels). The 16gb is very picky about the charging cable, using the stock cable it charges quite quick (maybe slightly slower than the 32) but using an extension with the stock cable the power actually falls very very slowly, and an overnight charge only adds about 50%
The 32 however, is lightning fast, a full charge only takes about 3hours. I can put it on charge for 20 minutes and get about 20-30% charge.

Huh????? My 32 N7 takes 4 hours to o charge.....

For reference, mine took ~5 hrs to charge fully from 0 to 100. Nexus 7 32G WiFi.
Using wall charger. 2A current.

I just took my 16 gig off the charger put it on at 14% 30 minutes ago and it is sitting at 56% now mine is only a couple weeks old
Mine is a c80 I was reading they can have the new power management chip

Can we get (Fast Charge) to work on the N7 like they have working on the GN? I love it on my GN.
I know fast charge is for pc usb charging only.

Last night mine was completely dead. Plugged in the supplied charger at 10pm. Battery is now 97% after 7.5 hours

Slow Charging? + Non OEM MicroUSB

My Nexus 7's battery was dead at arrival. I'm trying to charge it up now and it's MOVING SO SLOW?
Am i the only one?
Also I tried charging with my phone's microusb cord (cuz it's WAY longer) and it wasn't charging at all? Did anybody have any luck using NON-OEM usb cords?
Its probably the cord. The Nexus 7 charger is 5 volts 2 AMPS which is higher than the usual 1 amp chargers. Just wait and see

Nexus 7 is apparently very finicky regarding what chargers and what cables will do the job - some of mine work (e.g. $4.74 Motorola http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EYSKM8/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00 ) some don't (Griffin iPad charger for instance, which is a powerful charger and works for Everything else I've tried)
Along the same lines, if you have it attached to a generic car charger and are using it for GPS, the charger barely keeps up with power use.
Yes it charges slowly. Yes you have to use the charger that came with the unit.

That's better then my SGS2 phone. I had about 20% left on it, but needed to use it as a GPS on a business trip. Plugged it into a car charger, and loaded up Navigation. The phone indicated charging, but the battery level kept dropping (albeit a little slower). By the time we got to our destination (~30mins away) I only had 7% left.
Crazy.
Would the Nexus 7 charger be OK with my Galaxy Nexus or will there be issues? I don't need two chargers at the same time.

I charged my Gnex with the N7 charger two nights ago, had no issues but i don't know if it is safe.
As long as the voltages are the same, and the amps are = or > than what the device needs, you should be OK. The device will only pull the amperage it needs. Voltage is what needs to be the exact (but I don't think this matter over USB, since it's all 5v - matters more with generic A/C adapters). If you don't have enough amps, it could result in slow/failed charging, but too much doesn't matter.
It seems to picky with cables. I also used a longer USB I had lying around. I left it charging for 30 minutes. I came back and it only went up 1% I switched back to the cable that came with it and it started to charge it normally.
I'm not sure why its happening but its weird

tricky
The nexus 7 need "compatible" usb cables, i have one that is working great and it's for usb charging only, no data .
The nexus 7 battery is 4325 Mah so a 2Amp charger will charge the battery in a little more than 2 hours (calculate the 325mah over and add the standby battery discharging when you charge it while at ON)
So the tips are:
1. Find a good 2Amp usb charger
2. Find a compatible cable, try some no data cable or maybe usb3 or again try, try try...
Awesome Tablet
I picked up a 6 ft generic Micro USB cable from Amazon for around $2, and I've been using it to charge my Nexus 7 virtually since I bought it after it launched on the Google Play store, because it's much longer than the OEM Asus cord.
The problem though, it was hard to plug in, so I filed down the bumps [on the bottom of the connector, or, on the Nexus 7, the side facing you when you plug it in--because the N7's micro usb port is up side down ] a tad bit too much so now it's a little to lose. So sometimes when I adb into it, and move it a little bit, it will lose the PC connection [but never the charging connection] intermittently.
Also, it charges fine, except when I'm playing MC3, or Bad Piggies HD. With those apps, it will say Charging, but will actually slowly discharge [slower than on battery, so apparently there's not enough power to tread water, and it sinks slightly]. It's plays HD 720P mkv files fine [with MxPlayer], and stays fully charged at 100%.

My nexus takes about 7-8 hours to charge, and thats using the original charger that it came with. Used it now for a week without any improvement. Also my battery time with lowest backlight, gps off and so on is around 4-5 hours which feels abit low. wtf is going on?
Any usb charger should work.
The problem is the charge controler IC in the N7, it is REALLY picky with voltages.
My N7 OEM cord is a much heavier gauge then my NS or GN cord, on top of that the NS and GN cords are twice the length.
We had a really long thread on G+ about this, we even figured out the observer effect was screwing us when we had an ammeter on it.
TL;DR:
If the cord is too long or not heavy enough the N7 only pulls like 800mA (It can be less if the charger/cord is really ****, we had 300something mA with one combo)
The 2A OEM charger isn't 2A, but it's close enough.
microUSB plugs NEEDS to be 5mm or longer for them to mate in the plug properly, OEM is like 7mm
Some other crap I can't remember at 5am
So yeah, it's picky.
Use what it came with. It came with it for a reason.
Just got this in the mail from monoprice today and it's charging like a beauty.

I think so too!
I just wonder what is causing this... (1) some faulty chip in the tab itself, (2) faulty battery, (3) faulty Samsung cord or (4) faulty charger. No way to find out for sure, unless I return it to the shop and wait about 30 days (at best) while they figure that out and give their verdict
I hope someone has\had this problem and knows what exactly was causing it.

the last 5% take forever. That's usual behaviour for charging. Check out how long it takes to charge to 90% or maybe 95%. Should not take longer than 6 hours. If it does then maybe try a different charger or reset your tab to make sure it's no software bug.
Hard to tell the real source of error, sorry...
Are you ABSOLUTELY certain to be using the original, for your tab, charger, with a 2 amp output.
With such charger, it should be about 4 - 4.5 hours.
But if you are using a generic, or something made for an avg phone, with .5A output... Well 16h seems normal

Sometimes it does charge fast, but most of the time it either charges very slow, as though it were charging from USB, or doesn't recognize the charger, or even says it's established MTP-connection...
from 8 to 10 hours on hc 3.2

using the charger that came with the tab, you should get charging times around the 4/5 hours. HC 3.1 and 3.2.

Does the cable work properly when you use it for USB operations (file transfer, etc.)?
If so, then maybe the charger is broken/faulty. Samsung (in its infinite wisdom ) put a resistor network in their chargers so that the tab/phone can recognize a charger vs a usb connection ... or maybe just to make money from over-engineered accessories. who knows? However, if that resistor network has failed (or the cable is broken, hence the question above about USB operations) then the charger will present as a USB port rather than as a Samsung power source.
Oh! Another data point to consider: does gently wiggling/straightening the cable when it's connected cause the behavior to change?

There isn't much difference with ICS 4.0.4 US rom in my opinion. And it is still picky what chargers it accepts when it's turned on (DX.COM charger works for me). I usually turn the TAB off and use a stronger charger, but it still takes a LONG time to charge in my opinion. I do an overnight charge as much as I can.
Did an overnight charge with the Tab turned off, and it charged to 100%, finally. But when it's on (even in airplane mode) it only charged to 60% last night (took 12 hours!).
Weird)
i always charging my tab from 0 or 2-5% to 100% either when powered on or off and it always takes 5 to 5 1/2 hours. no more and no less with default charger set.

Common belief (knowledge) is that this is not the best for a lithium ion battery... It increases the wear, gets it to lose capacity sooner... If possible, charge your battery often, like as soon as you can below 75%. Only occasionally drop battery to 0%. IIRC, there's a good website called "battery university" talking about that

I am seeing same problem with my brother's 7300 tab as well. Its taking around 10 or more hrs to charge.
Anybody got tablet replaced in warranty for the same reason? Even with Nexus 7 original 2 A charger its taking too much time. With samsung original charger also it was taking similar time so i am sure problem is with the tab only.
4-5 hours on mine.

Many Galaxy tab 8.9 owners have reported experiencing long charge times to the tune of about 16 hours, me included.
Solution:
Plug in the charger to the tab very very slowly. The charge icon in the system tray has a lightning symbol on it aka normal charge.
Connecting it at normal speed results to the charging icon in the system tray having a cross on it. It then charges very very slowly.
Why should we need gymnastics to normally charge our tablets? Ask Samsung.

I don't think Quick Charge 2.0 adapters are out till early 2014. Even if they are, the one that came with my Z1 doesn't support it. Only Quick Charge 1. You can tell because the output is listed on the adapter (mine is 1500 mA).
Quick Charge 1 works on .7 to 2.5 A. Quick Charge 2 is 4+ A. (Standard USB 2.0 port will provide 500 mA while USB 3.0 will provide 900 mA).
So my 1.5 Amp Z1 charger isn't even at the top end of Quick Charge 1. With that said, I haven't tested a full charge. But if plugged into a USB 2.0 port, it barely charges while phone is on (few percent an hour maybe).

what you said does really make sense because quick charge 1.0 promise ~40% faster charge which I reported in my first post (+1 for that). Now is there any way to check whether the Z1 support quick charge 2.0? I know the chip S800 does, but what about the battery software or other internals (I am not really expert in this area). if it does then when new adapters are released with output more than 1500mA we will get faster charge time. I have my nexus 7 charger which says 2000mA, would this make difference and would it hurt the Z1 battery if I used it?
One last thing, if the output is 3000mA does that mean half the charging time? or there are other things to take into account?

All Snapdragon 800 chips have the QC2.0 circuit so we're good. Just have to wait for chargers.
I'm not an electrical engineer (studied mechanical) so I can't comment on things like losses within the charging process and all that technical stuff. However you have the concept right and in general that should be true. 3A charging a phone should charge it twice as fast as 1.5A

The iPhone 5 has a battery half the size of this... I personally take about 2 -3 hours to fully charge the phone using the Sony provided charger!
Started Charging at 1:06 am - Battery was fully discharged.
1:23am Put Phone on - Battery at 11%
2:31am Put screen on - Battery at 52%
3:06am : Put screen on - battery at 73%
4:19am Put screen on - battery at 99%
4:26am Put screen on - Battery fully Charged .
I think the problem with the provided charger where the output is only 1500mA. the SGS4 with sd600 (does not support quick charge 2.0) comes with charger with output 2000mA which I tried with my Z1 and slightly improved the charging time. what we discussed earlier about early 2014 release of the quick charge 2.0 compatible chargers is the solution, I found couple of sources that confirm this. so we hope that better chargers to be released soon with 3000mA + ouput which would reduce the charging to to less than half.
it took 1 hour 40 min to go from 20% to 100%, I'm using the charging dock that came with the phone.

Yesteday I was at about 4% and at work. I put it on the charger (just a 1Amp charger) and an hour later it was close to 80%.....i thought it was glitch but love it...
Now I need a wireless pad.... just toss it on there and voila.
Initially, took forever to charge. Battery was draining while plugged in and using the phone. Then I plugged it into the gnex wall wort and it started charging real fast. And the gnex was charging just as fast on the n5 charger. Haven't checked on the supplied charger since. Time to give it another shot.
Just got a nexus 5 today. Traded my Unlocked HTC One for it zero out of pocket even. Trade. The charge on this thing is a beast! Great phone so far.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's due to the Quick Charge 2.0 feature Qualcomm put in the 800.

I'm pretty this is not the case. The wall adapter that comes with the N5 is not Quick Charge 2.0. certified.

Won't be nearly as fast via wireless charging.
Nexus devices have charged fast since the N4. Maybe it's an LG thing? My Note 3 doesn't charge as fast, but it's a 3200 mAh battery w/a 2amp charger. Still not as fast though, even with the same Snapdragon 800.
It's likely that Google worked with LG on the battery drivers for fast charging to offset the lackluster battery life (similar to Lenovo's X1 Carbon quick charge). They know you will have to charge at some point during the day, so they needed to make it fast to keep people from flipping out.

[Q] Moto G Charging Time

Hey guys, How much time does it take u to charge your 2nd gen moto G from 0 to 100 running stock and locked botloader. I'm having an issue with my device, it takes 3 hours to charge with wifi and mobile data off. Is it the same with everyone ?

Here's something another user said in another topic:

->battery charges up in 2 nd half hours..if u use it continuously while charging..then it would take 3hrs or more..
->i didn't face heating issues of charger
->cable wasn't there even in previous moto g..
->no smell
->u cannot expect more from a 2070mah battery as the screen is now 5inch..if u go out in the morning with full charge..u can easily end it up till night with normal usage..[/QUOTE
Guess you can trust on that, mine was ordered today, hoping to receive it till Saturday

I am using my Lumia's charger and phone gets charged in a hour from 0-100%
I will have an answer for this in a few days.
Theoritically it should take 225mins to charger from 0-100% with stock charger..
Anyone knows maximum charging rate?
Just did a full charge (0-100%) without the OS running. Took 2 hours. I'm using Anker Power IQ 40W 5-port desktop charger and Moto's USB cable.
Remember, quality of the cable (as well as the charger) directly affects charge time. So try to use official or high quality cable and charger
Search Google for "Cables Can Significantly Impact the Charging Speed of Your USB Devices" and click on the LifeHacker article

Mine also takes almost 3 hours. That is because they have given a 500mAmp charger . I am using my iPad charger block rated at 2.1A and it charged from 25% to 100% in 70 minutes
Yep,
Use a 2 Amp charger and you will get full charge in 1.5 hours.
