So I use the stock Google Maps and Navigation apps while driving. If there is traffic the only thing I can do in either one of these apps is to just activate the traffic layer which just basically shows roads with different color schemes based on flow of traffic. I am looking for an app that can both serve as a GPS and also inform of real time traffic and update the driving route to avoid said traffic. Can anyone recommended a good reliable app? Thanks.

Traffic update is based on user usage, not sure if that's what I am looking for. Looking for something more accurate and less reliable on users.

Try Sygic.
It uses offline maps, so there is no high data download while navigating, but it also reports the current traffic conditions. Sygic has detailed and accurate maps -- at least concerning Europe.

What about for devices that need data for GPS to work?
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda premium
Ok so I decided to try out waze, and don't really like it. The traffic notices are based on current waze users so that was ok. I actually was stuck in traffic after downloading it so it did alert me on that but the one thing I was looking for it did not do. Basically if there is traffic I want to be automatically be re-directed or given options of other routes to stay clear of traffic. This app did not do that. It states it uses offline maps as to not consume data, not sure how that works exactly because when I tried to launch the app and get a route for my drive home it would not connect as I was not in network range, I had to restart my network in order for it to work. I guess I'll keep looking around to see if there is an app that daffiest what I am looking for. I did look into Copilot Live by @ $17 not sure if the that I am looking for that it says it offer do actually work, they don't give you much time for a trial. So my search goes on.

hey,
I have a nexus one 2.2.1 CM6.1.1.
I want to know of any FREE gps apps that i can download or get for my phone. I want to be able to download the map (wanted:Canada) so i dont need a data plan.
Maybe Map Droyd is what you're looking for?

Check Locus out
I think the latest Maps 5.0 provides offline navigation function, but I never tried it..
I use Maverick for offline maps caching, Maverick has both free and paid versions, Locus looks pretty nice too but Maverick requires less permissions to run.
The built in Google Maps already does offline navigation.

But it's crappy as hell.
It will reliably "offline cache" a currently calculated route ... but it's hope and pray otherwise, whether something was locally cached.
And forget about traveling somewhere and "pre-caching" the location (e.g. so that you don't incur roaming charges)
But I need a good one like the GPS app on an HTC Sense like d desire hd

Pay and download whatever you want.
If you want free - use either Google navigation, or Waze (if it supports Canada).

So you can now download multiple map areas when your at home on WiFi before you go out and they stay there so you dont need data to use maps.
Just do the following:
1. Make sure you have the latest version 5.7
2. When in Google Maps, press menu
3. Then choose: more > labs > and select "Download Map Area"
4. Go back to the map and center where you want to download.
5. Hold down your finger in the center of the map untill the address pops up.
6. Press the address bubble and the standard menu will popup only now you can select "Download Map Area" which will download 10sq Miles of map around that address, you can keep doing it until you have the whole of NZ if you want, its awesum!
Try it out, works great.

I don't know why google don't make Maps Loader to allow us to get the maps for countries we want and then use only GPS to use maps like in Nokia Maps it will be so good to have all country map in offline mode
I agree so much easier

It will download a 10mile radius of map data and it enables you to travel offline if needed ( in case of a kink in data connection ).
I constantly travel, so what I did was download 10+ 10mile radius so I would have no issue when travelling through deadzones ( which is EVERYWHERE.....thanks AT&T )

No, it's not. It won't help you if you need to reroute to another destination you didn't pre-download. I've been using CoPilot since 2009 while waiting for Google to catch up... no problems yet. I guess free isn't always better.

Hey
I go for long runs except I go random ways through woods etc so I don't get bored. So I wonder if anybody knows an app that will be able to tell me how far I have travelled using GPS and if possible even map my route?
I've only ever found apps that work on pre-determind routes. Which are useless for me.
I don't mind if it's paid or free, providing it works.

Friend think that the routes in most maps are for urban areas to suburban areas (forests, mountains, etc.) is not mapped. The only thing you can do with GPS is to trace the route that you follow on a white background, for that you can use for example the application of nike + and using the offline option of google maps trace the route record in you
try sport tracker

Hi all,
Can anyone suggest some GPS app that's good for our Galaxy Note and better if without relying on data connection?
(possibly someone from Asia as i understood that Europe/US might have other GPS apps? )
First of all, I'm on STAXX PA 1.7 ICS with Anidroid Kernel v1.0.
I've tried a few, but not all that good:
1. Waze - free, quite nice, but require data connection, when get to somewhere without signal...
2. Sygic - free for 14 days, nice interface, doesn't require data connection, but can't find most location?!?! :silly:
3. Papago X5 - paid, quite accurate, doesn't require data connection, but doesn't support our Note resolution
4. Papago M9 - paid, quite accurate, doesn't require data connection, suppose to be Note-compatible, but not sure why, mine is not showing full screen. due to custom rom?
Any others that I can try?
*now i started to miss my days with my HTC Tytn 2 with Garmin...*

Gps can locate your position without using data But how do you suggest it can load your map without data?? Have you been watching harry potter too much?
Navfree World (hxxps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.ALL&hl=en) works quite well. It does require a fairly hefty download (200-500mb) to get the maps for your country in the first place, but once the maps are downloaded, a data connection is no longer required.
The only "problem" is that it uses OpenStreetMaps, which while decent, doesn't have the detail that many of the commercial satnav offerings have.
Replace the xx in the URL above with tt, the forum won't let me post links yet.
Cheers,
cgkanchi

I'm using Sygic for the past two years now. Using it since the days of my good' old Wave 2 !! It is pretty much accurate in India. It shows even the smallest of locations. And gets a lock fast. :good: Uses Sygic Downloader to download maps(One time) so it's pretty much an offline navigation.

Above shown method will reduce(if you using navigation in area of downloaded map hardly it uses few KB) data consumption.
Google map still needs active data connection to run navigation. can't use as true offline navigation
Sygic is best from i tried, Sygic/Navigon/Ndrive 1-2 more from market.
Still google is the best if you have data connection.

Use Mod version of google navigation that is world navigation activated, works anywhere.

Try Be-On-Road
Its in the app store. I tried a bunch of free and trial programs for offline nav on my Samsung N7000. This seemed to be the best - by far. For the entire USA, the cost for perpetual app and maps (update once per year) was $25. A decent price, I think. Slightly odd UI but easy to get used to via their 7-day trial. Not perfect. But I found a bug, reported it, got fast response, and a fix from the developer who will include it in the next release. Gotta like that. Wish it could navigate better using entries in the contacts list but it kinda works (if you have a data connection). Well worth checking out.

The trick is to enter your destination before you leave while you have Internet. Google navigation works fine with offline maps after that.

Hey XDA!
My friend and I recently released a network performance/diagnosis tool in the Android Play Store, and today we have updated the apps with all new features and capabilities. Check them out!
NetTech allows you to quickly and easy check your current network conditions. With this app, you are able to see network strength (both WIFI and Mobile networks), IP information, DNS information, and various WiFi information. You are also able to test current network performance by doing ping tests and speed tests.
The full version includes:
-No ads
-Google Map interface showing your location along with the nearest cell tower that you are connected to or the location of your IP address if you are on WiFi
-(New) Ability to take a snapshot your current network configuration (WIFI only) and be able to compare configurations at different locations. For example, you can take a snapshot at home and a snapshot at work and compare the two network environments!
The lite version includes:
-ALL features of the full version
-Ad-supported
-Previous, the lite version was very limited and only contained about 1/3 of the features, but we felt it was best to get all features to all users
Please check them out on the Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crypticapps.nettech
We would love any remarks about the app and criticism/feature requests!
Thanks guys!
