Accessory idea - Back Camera - Nexus 7 Accessories

Here's a free idea for someone.
I remember seeing this somewhere in the old days for some device. A little mini periscope - 2 mirrors, snaps onto the top of the Nexus 7 allowing you to use the front camera as a backside camera.
Anyone know what device someone made that for a few years ago?
Oh I remember now. It was the opposite. Brought the back camera to the front for skype.

Sure wouldn't be difficult to modify this DIY deal...

Shows it for a OLPC setup, but it's pretty generic.

Please tell me you guys are kidding. This is beyond dumb. Are you really going to go through all of this for a 1.3MP camera? Wow.

I made one, before I got the device in fact! though my idea was to use one little mirror to make the cam "up-facing" so when held flat it was forward facing and you could review and frame up the view.
Not obtrusive and when I get a non scratched little mirror it'll go in the accessory bag. It flips the image horizontally so left is right etc but not a prob ,
For many folk an option like that that is small and slots on top could be handy for video calls where you need to show folk what's going on in front of you or the odd pic. Not a matter for mockery!

I think it is a good idea.

I don't have a need for a front facing camera, but it would definitely be nice to have.

There was a company doing this for the Nexus One. I remember being very interested in it, but then realized no one I knew at the time had phones with a FFC to video chat anyways; so I didn't buy it.

Brief review of a "C9O" Nexus 7

Today I got my first (and hopefully only) Nexus 7 replacement at a local store here in Germany (Media Markt) - due to some cracking speakers and dead pixels.
I was very surprised that they already had replacements there, since all Nexi were sold out pretty fast - Serial of that replacement is C9O. So here a little review/comparism to my old C8O.
So far none of the known issues are present. Screen is perfectly even, sound seems different but no cracking. The screen seems much brighter (no dead/stuck pixels). On highest brightness level it almost hurts my eyes even in my daylight lit room - that definitely was not the case with my C8O Nexus. Overall the display quality is surprisingly astonishing - keeping in mind that it is my second device that is rather odd. Maybe there were some more display problems with my C8O - I don't know, but this screen is definitely much nicer to look at.
Software wise it has Android 4.1.1 pre-installed .. build nr. JRO03S - this seems new? Old build number was JRO03D .. but to be honest I have no idea what this might say.
I cannot say if some internal things (screws, speaker placement) have changed, since I don't really want to open it right now - maybe later. But I guess some of you crafty guys will get their hands on a C9O soon enough.
Anybody got a C9O replacement and can confirm/object my experiences?
Here can i find the build of the nexus ??

No when I got my c60 the screen was really warm. Just got my c70 replacement and it screen is much cooler. The dimness is fixed by turning off the nvidia smart dimmer. The color would be fixed by messing with the kernel modules if ever found.

Aren't the C9O's supposed to have different screens (Sharp or a different Hydis)? Have they fixed the washed-out color problem?
Compare this to your PC monitor or another mobile device and see if the colors are similar. http://www.digitalspaceart.com/transfer/SMPTE_ColorBars.jpg

I did a quick comparism to my monitor. It's not a very good one tbh and the picture is taken with my old HTC Legend - will do it again with a better camera + screen later.
Bottom one is the Nexus. Much brighter, but colours a bit weaker - I guess.
/Update: Did another comparism and nope - no colour differences. Will post pictures later. Guess they fixed that.

The first 3 characters of your devices serial number depict which model it is - I don't think you can recall this via software, you've got to look at your retailer box thingy - don't know what it's called right now

It's the first few digits of the serial number. If you took off and threw away the sticker, check the box...if you threw that away too, I don't know what to tell you.

I really hope they fix the issues especially the display being slightly washed out or inaccurate which tends to be problematic with cheaper LCD displays. This is probably my sole reason why I ultimately returned it.

So, I've been thinking about getting the Nexus 4 for my wife as a replacement for Sony point-and-shoot (DSC-W90). How is this camera going to compare to that? I know its no DSLR, but if she's been happy with the point-and-shoot, will this be a sufficient replacement?

Nope. The optics in a standalone point and shoot are much bigger than what's in the Nexus 4 and will get more details and sharper and more options. It's no comparison.
Also, the DSC-W90 (and nearly all point and shoot cameras) have optical zoom, which almost no phone cameras have. Your current camera is much better than the Nexus 4 for photography.

"Sufficient"? Maybe. Depends on what she does with the snaps. If she just wants to email a small to mid sized pic then I'm sure it would be fine. I cant remember the last time I used my camera and I've been plenty happy. I'd say the option of having a camera with you at all times trumps the rest!

Negatives on Nexus 4

Seems like every time a new nexus seems like in the first three months you can't say anything negative about the phone. It must be better than everything else or bust. Its like the phone you own defines you as a person. Seems like if you think something is bad about a nexus something is wrong with you and a lot you guys attack people who are actually in touch with reality.
Apple does not give a hot damn about a nexus and it laughable to think the number 1 phone maker on the planet is worried about us. The fact that some think they have a hidden smear campaign is just nuts.
The nexus 4 is an awesome phone but it has some flaws like everything else. You can lie to yourself to make your purchase feel better but facts are facts. Here are some of the negatives so people thinking of buying this phone can now what is true and to expect.
1. This phone is very fragile ( more than any other phone I owned ). Its glass front and back so expect to own a case and screen protectors. If this phone is gorilla glass its the crappiest I have ever seen or the weakest. All these guys saying they drop there phones and not even a mark, come on. Common sense you can look at this phone and tell any hard floor and a drop over 1 foot something is getting marked or cracked.
2. After you crack the front the screen stops working and the phone is pretty much junk might as well buy a new one. This is not an iPhone so replacement parts will be hard to find and cost will be high. I can crack an iPhone and for 30-40 bucks fix it myself. Good luck on this its the same as the nexus 7. Once cracked it is pretty much worthless.
3. Phone does get pretty warm if the screen is on for about 20 min even on auto brightness. I know its a thin phone but even with a case its hot in the back.
4. Screen colors are washed and LCD is not great. Not saying its bad but its not winning any awards. Put this next almost any other top phone and you will see why people say its washed. Yes you can adjust but you have to root and flash custom and a custom kernel for best results. Then its a little better but it will always be an LCD can't change that. Viewing angles no good and blacks are not deep blacks.
5. Battery life is just ok, some may even say bad. I am on custom ROMs so its a little better but around 4 hours on screen time on average.
There are a few other minor things but for the most part these are the flaws. I still suggest this phone because its cheap, its unlocked, super fast, stock android, and its sleek and sexy. I am not a troll spent over 2 grand ordering nexus 4's, probably donated hundreds of dollars to devs.
Post what you think the negatives are of this phone.

Sorry I have to disagree.
I have no heating issues, the LCD is far superior than my HTC one x was, and I get consistently over 5 hours screen on time. Unbelievable if you ask me.

And your stock right? I mean depending what you customize you can get 5 hours but a screen shot would help of proof. And the LCD I'm not saying is bad just not amazing. Its sharp but when I look at an amoled I start missing it again.
Yeah I didn't want to name the minor stuff, lots of people don't even know what USB otg is, could said lack of storage, yellow tint, no LTE, etc.
Main flaw is the whole scratch easy and breaks easy and don't break the front glass or it stops working. Has anyone found out why the nexus 7 and 4 have this problem. I am guessing its somewhere along the line of this how they got the cost down so much. After breaking a nexus 7 on carpet I kinda want Google to make the devices better builds or release some cheap parts to fix them.

Not too sure about the N7, but the N4 uses zero gap technology. I don't really remember the details but it's something along the lines of removing a layer from between the screen and digitizer so they can have a screen without a bezel.

when I got my nexus 4, I couldnt wait for it to come and try it out. i was coming from an htc one x. and no way in the world does the nexus 4 screen come close to the htc one x's. and my nexus 4 started having random shutoffs, heated up, battery was draining faster than i could charge. and the camera sucks on this phone. I got myself a note 2 its a solid device and I do miss the pure google experience, but tbh LG effed it up.
My biggest complaints:
-battery life is atrocious compared to my previous devices
-volume rocker gets hit a lot when pushing wake button one-handed
-google support, I feel like I was somewhat suckered into purchasing by having a Qi charging orb, miracast accessories, and the bumper dangled in front of me only to have them nonexistent, sold out and/or just plain silent when it comes to answers regarding future availability
-the flash on the camera needs to be toned down
-audio is pretty muffled when using speakerphone and phone is laying on it's back, thanks to speaker location
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I also have to disagree with the last three points
My phone only gets warm with intense CPU stuff (which is expected...)
I love the colors, and I can easily manipulate them to give richer, deeper colors through kernels and what not of I grow unhappy later
Battery for me is really good... 4+ screen in 18+ hours... On 3G with WiFi its 6+ in 20+

I am not going to discuss the other points but, you are right, the phone is very fragile. Mine suffer a falling from about one meter which cracks the screen. In any case, the replacement by an official client service costs near 150€, transport included, so the complain about the components cost its not fair.

@Fataldesaign what's the matter with you??
You've started at least 8 anti-nexus 4 thread in this forum, most of them which for locked. All of your thread are something negative.
I remember you ate the same guy from that thread where you started calling everyone your hater and all ... There's no need to start so many thread on the flaws of Nexus 4. One or two is OK.
Thread reported. Kindly do not make useless threads now.
I don't understand why people come in some phone's forum, and make a thread "faults of this phone". I mean, if you don't like this phone, at least don't turn those who spent money in getting the device against it? It may have its flaws, but we are OK with them. We don't need reminders about the bad things. I mean, constructive criticism is GOOD. But not pointless pointing out of flaws...
If you have complaints, kindly submit an error report to Google.
Hope you get my point.

(MOD) Optimus G mainboard in nexus 4 housing

This project has a very simple premise, create a LG Optimus G/Nexus 4 hybrid. From What I can make out, the main boards are relatively the same in camera placement, connect compatibility, main board size and shape. I'll post my preliminary finding after I receive the nexus 4 housing, screen and optimus g main board.
[Update] 17/09/2013
Just got my doner optimus g today. Will start build once the doner Nex4 arrives.
[Update] 18/09/2013
I now have both devices and only just realised that I need a torcs 5 screw driver... Hopefully the screw driver will be here tomorrow or the next day.
[Update] 20/09/2013
Swapped the logic board over today but no boot. And secondly, the front camera (nex4 and LGOG), rear camera 8mp (nex4) and rear camera 16mp (LGOG) all have different connectors. Will look closer at getting a successful boot in the next 2 days and will see if I can possibly resolder the 13mp to the 8mp ribbon.
[Update] 2/10/2013
Still having some issues with getting a successful boot on the nex4/LGOG hybrid. I think the inability to boot is more by design than by chance given that lg when to the trouble of making the logic boards in the these devices just different enough to make it not fit. I'll need to get a boot logo before I start reshaping the LGOG logic board.
Stay tuned
Hey, if you have the spare hardware just lying around and you don't know what else to do with it, go for it. It'll be interesting if nothing else.
A lot of responses are going to be asking why you would ever want to do that or whatever, but like I said, if you have the hardware and the spare time to commit to it, why not?

I'm doing this because I view the nexus 4 as a more attractive device, but the lack of a sd card slot and LTE makes it less functional than the Optimus G. This project is more about figuring out how much of the nexus 4 and Optimus G is interchangeable. On a different note it looks like the front camera connector of the nexus 4 is the same as the optimus g back camera (correct orientation). So with a little kernel modding and a whole lot of luck we might have a 13mp front facing camera for our nex4's
Here is the two logic boards. Side by side there is quite a few differences but the lcd, digitizer and battery connectors look to be in the same spot and also look like the same connectors, so I'm fairly confident in a successful boot.

On closer inspection probably not due to the front camera in both utilizing a different connector. The 13mp sensor might be interchangeable with the nex4's 8mp sensor tho
Any luck with the camera? This phone is a flagship phone minus the camera. If we can get that fixed, I see no need to upgrade anytime soon. I wish I knew how to get involved on this.

You have my support! Hope you do manage to get it done because I'm hoping for a better front camera 13mp wouldn't be bad either .

I'm doing this because I view the nexus 4 as a more attractive device, but the lack of a sd card slot and LTE makes it less functional than the Optimus G.

As far I know, Optimus G does not has SD Card Slot either.
Nope but it has 32gb internal memory.
@op, did you managed to have 13mp camera?

I have a LG Optimus G e975k. It's Telstra branded. So yes, it has the 13mp sensor
The nexus 4 is a 16gb first gen (no bumps on the bottom of the case).
Interesting hacking... subcribe for future update

Will watch this thread... Good project!

Nexus 6 vs Droid Turbo camera

Hey guys. I just recently edged up early to a turbo w/ the intention of going to the nexus 6 within 14 days (the promo was only for the turbo at the time). But what I have found is that the turbo's camera really isn't that great, crispness wise, and i am wondering how the nexus 6 camera is since they are both motorola even though the turbo is 21mp.
I know the 6 has the "breathing" during video problem too...i'm contemplating going w/ note 4 but i HATE that it doesn't have root!!

I just puked a little when i heard note 4.
I am no camera buff so dont take my word for it but i think the pictures are fine. I think it gets very positive reviews in the camera aspect. Have you goggled for proper reviews?
I haven't seen too many droid turbo photos but I think I know what you mean. the Nexus 6 takes a pretty nice photo but one at a time. There is no burst. There is no slow-mo video video. You just won't find many of the niceties you might find on a Samsung device.
HDR it does pretty well. I believe the app is lacking but the hardware is pretty good.

Definitely... I just can't find much comparing these two specifically. and since I have the turbo i was curious how it matched up. so far, my old g2 takes better photos than the turbo does, albeit slower.

Camera apps make all the difference, I have just about everything outside of slowmo recording

4? Sounds like you don't look thoroughly at apps, I've been using 1 for quite some time now and it does everything, but hey, that's the beauty of Android, you have options

What app?

Yes I would love to hear what app has burst, slow motion video, syncs the camera to the flash correctly and still functions as well as a camera without focusing/hunting problems.
I currently have FV5, manual camera, perfectly clear, L camera, and the crappy stock one.

well like I said, it does everything but slow-mo, but I've been using open camera, very light weight, but has tons of options

Well I was more impressed than I thought I would be. I will have to play with it some more and see.
Thanks!
Still think a company that literally makes billions of dollars a quarter could come up with a better default camera for their flagship phone. [emoji35]

No problem! glad you found this one better, now you can save some space instead of having 4 apps and trust me, we all want google to make a better camera app, but until then, we have options, that's what makes android, well...android
Just mad at myself for wasting money on the others. But I do like to support developers so it is a wash. [emoji3]
