(MOD) Optimus G mainboard in nexus 4 housing - Nexus 4 General

This project has a very simple premise, create a LG Optimus G/Nexus 4 hybrid. From What I can make out, the main boards are relatively the same in camera placement, connect compatibility, main board size and shape. I'll post my preliminary finding after I receive the nexus 4 housing, screen and optimus g main board.
[Update] 17/09/2013
Just got my doner optimus g today. Will start build once the doner Nex4 arrives.
[Update] 18/09/2013
I now have both devices and only just realised that I need a torcs 5 screw driver... Hopefully the screw driver will be here tomorrow or the next day.
[Update] 20/09/2013
Swapped the logic board over today but no boot. And secondly, the front camera (nex4 and LGOG), rear camera 8mp (nex4) and rear camera 16mp (LGOG) all have different connectors. Will look closer at getting a successful boot in the next 2 days and will see if I can possibly resolder the 13mp to the 8mp ribbon.
[Update] 2/10/2013
Still having some issues with getting a successful boot on the nex4/LGOG hybrid. I think the inability to boot is more by design than by chance given that lg when to the trouble of making the logic boards in the these devices just different enough to make it not fit. I'll need to get a boot logo before I start reshaping the LGOG logic board.
Stay tuned

Hey, if you have the spare hardware just lying around and you don't know what else to do with it, go for it. It'll be interesting if nothing else.
A lot of responses are going to be asking why you would ever want to do that or whatever, but like I said, if you have the hardware and the spare time to commit to it, why not?

I'm doing this because I view the nexus 4 as a more attractive device, but the lack of a sd card slot and LTE makes it less functional than the Optimus G. This project is more about figuring out how much of the nexus 4 and Optimus G is interchangeable. On a different note it looks like the front camera connector of the nexus 4 is the same as the optimus g back camera (correct orientation). So with a little kernel modding and a whole lot of luck we might have a 13mp front facing camera for our nex4's

Here is the two logic boards. Side by side there is quite a few differences but the lcd, digitizer and battery connectors look to be in the same spot and also look like the same connectors, so I'm fairly confident in a successful boot.

Interesting, let us know how this goes. Is there any chance you can switch the 13mp camera to the back and have the 8mp camera for the front?

On closer inspection probably not due to the front camera in both utilizing a different connector. The 13mp sensor might be interchangeable with the nex4's 8mp sensor tho

Any luck with the camera? This phone is a flagship phone minus the camera. If we can get that fixed, I see no need to upgrade anytime soon. I wish I knew how to get involved on this.

If this actually works, and the frankenexus boots up, then USB OTG on the nexus FTW!

Awesome.. Keep us updated

You have my support! Hope you do manage to get it done because I'm hoping for a better front camera 13mp wouldn't be bad either .

Nope but it has 32gb internal memory.

I have a LG Optimus G e975k. It's Telstra branded. So yes, it has the 13mp sensor
The nexus 4 is a 16gb first gen (no bumps on the bottom of the case).

Interesting hacking... subcribe for future update

Accessory idea - Back Camera

Here's a free idea for someone.
I remember seeing this somewhere in the old days for some device. A little mini periscope - 2 mirrors, snaps onto the top of the Nexus 7 allowing you to use the front camera as a backside camera.
Anyone know what device someone made that for a few years ago?
Oh I remember now. It was the opposite. Brought the back camera to the front for skype.
Sure wouldn't be difficult to modify this DIY deal...

Shows it for a OLPC setup, but it's pretty generic.
Please tell me you guys are kidding. This is beyond dumb. Are you really going to go through all of this for a 1.3MP camera? Wow.

I made one, before I got the device in fact! though my idea was to use one little mirror to make the cam "up-facing" so when held flat it was forward facing and you could review and frame up the view.
Not obtrusive and when I get a non scratched little mirror it'll go in the accessory bag. It flips the image horizontally so left is right etc but not a prob ,
For many folk an option like that that is small and slots on top could be handy for video calls where you need to show folk what's going on in front of you or the odd pic. Not a matter for mockery!

Noone will put a 4k display to 5" phone, thats plain stupid so this one you may drop.
Snapdragon 800 will be more likely used in tablets, so i also dont expect it to be in next Nexus device , it will most probably will be SD600 like in other top models this year.
Ill bet for 1080P , 5" screen (which is also useless in phone, but everyone got it so Google will also). 2GB of ram (who needs more in a phone?)
No sdcard slot, no removable battery - standard in google phones.
the most major change will be the OS, KLP will most probably be pushed to phones after I/O.

4k refers to video its called ultra hd.wow . also....it seems(could of course be wrong) like you dissing or dissmising nexuses?! First are you forgeting price??!! Way below norm.people are and will eventually flock once out of a contract fir a 249$ phone. Second nexus strives now(not the gnex albeit a good phone) to be the top o line device. My lgog which is the n4 brother destroyed the Samsung Galaxy s3 in the way many ways including speed. The lgog is the top scorer stock on quadrant. Yes i know its not everyday use im just making a point. I have contacts at lg(a cousin who is a dev) and all these specs are being seriously considered.(blueprint will be at fed communication soon) and the almost for sure one is the snapdragon 800. So your guess is flawed. Sorry

Latest leaked on Nexus 5 Specs

Looks like LG G2 is the premium cousin of Nexus 5. With only 2300mah battery, and low spec camera, I am glad I got the G2.
http://www.gsmarena.com/leaked_nexus_5_log_reveals_most_of_the_specs-news-6876.php
Most of the stuff is no surprise – a 5" screen (actually, 4.97") with 1080p resolution, 442ppi pixel density, a Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage (on that concrete model, there might be others with more and hopefully not less storage). The phone ran Key Lime Pie (a.k.a. Android 4.4 KitKat), build version KRS74H.
It seems that the camera has been changed to an 8MP snapper (the Nexus 4 also got a lower-res camera than the Optimus G it was based on). It's too early to tell if there will be optical image stabilization (probably not though). There's a 1.2MP front-facing camera too.
The Nexus 5 will pack dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and GPS connectivity. The model whose log file leaked ran on North American LTE bands, but we should expect a Euro version too.
Pieces of the leaked log with the salient info
The phone will have wireless charging built in and while battery capacity wasn’t in the logs, FCC docs point to a 2,300mAh unit. There will also be a full set of sensors – accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity and light sensors as well as a barometer. The FCC measured the phone at 131.9mm tall and 68.2 mm wide, there's no info on thickness.
A case maker, SPIGEN, puts the Nexus 5 launch date at October 31, a month from now.
Thanks for the tip, Emanuele!
I spent most of last night snapping pics and a birthday party. After 2 years with my gnexus I realized how nice it is to have a great camera. I don't care that it's 8 mp. But I freaking love ois.

GNex's camera serves me well enough for daily snap. It was nothing to boast about.
What I hated most about the Gnex is the battery life with never ever lasted me the whole day, especially at night when you go out with friends, that is when you want your phone most.

Not true. Megapixels on cell phone cameras don't really mean ****. 8mp or 13mp, its a way higher resolution than it needs to be... No ones printing posters from their cell phone photos. Sensor quality and speed, iso performance, and compression/processing are all much more important. Which is why my 10mp DSLR takes way better photos than my 13mp phone or 16mp point and shoot.
Its still probably very likely that the N5 camera will be worse. But it won't be because of the lower mp sensor. It'll be because Google is going to cut corners wherever they can to get a $300-$400 price tag.

My brother has been in the printing and imaging biz for about 40 years and he says the same things. All those pixels are good for cropping smaller pics from big ones or printing posters but it doesn't help the quality of the image any.

Its 10 mp by default. 13 mp pics are squares. So, my comment on amazing photos are based on 10 mp pics. I'm amazed people still say mps matter. How many times has that theory been crushed. IPhone 5s is 8 mp and it CRUSHES the s4s 13 mp camera.

I agree with you about the battery life. The Galaxy Nexus had absolutely horrible battery life. The Nexus 5 has me interested but I'm still looking at the G2 as an upgrade to my current phone which is a Note 2 mostly because of the battery.
Yeah so true, what is the point of snapdragon 800, and 5"screen of the phone won't last you through out the day.

If people don't buy Nexus devices purely based on price, then they are nuts imo. There are always better phones hardware and specs wise out there that can easily have an AOSP rom flashed to it.

Especially with the upcoming Cyanogen CM ROM app coming to the Play Store, will be easy as pie to install the latest CM ROM on your phone, even if your not comfortable rooting, and flashing rom's yourself. Now will be super easy. Just need a phone that has an unlocked bootloader out of the box, and no funny ATT or Verizon lock down on it, which the G2 I think is developer friendly, and is in LG's best interest to gain support from the community, I think LG is in the Android position, like Samsung was back in the Galaxy S2 days a few years ago.

Unless the Nexus 5 announcement pulls a ton of surprises, I don't see how it could be a bigger draw to get it over the G2, besides the significantly lowered pricepoint of course.

Is the G2 unlockable? I see there is TWRP and stuff but I don't see any root or custom roms yet. I like the G2 but ain't no way I'm going to be a frontrunner after the G2x burned me.
I'd rather have the N5 with lower specs then the G2 IF LG isn't going to support it.
My 2yr Galaxy Nexus running 4.3 AOKP is plenty fast and absolutely a beast on Battery (stock 2100mAh extended). I'd hate to get rid of it but the OMAP CPU is showing its age. Otherwise the best phone I have ever owned. I'll make a choice in December to see where the G2 and the N5 are. In a perfect world, with the N5 is close in hardware, ROMs could be ported back and forth easily allowing one to have the better spec'd G2 with all the development that comes with a Nexus.

You haven't used any other phone. The gnex is slow and Verizon 4.3 has terrible signal.
Hopefully that 8MP shooter is something like the Exmor R featured in the 5S.

I love CM and AOSP.
At the moment my SGS3 is running Android 4.2.2 CM 10.1. It is now very good but it arrived later then 4.3 stock on my N4.
AOSP 3rd party ROMS will always be at least 6 months behind official Android on Nexus.

Camera swap in Nexus 4

Is there any possibility of swapping original Nexus 4 camera for that one in LG G2 or that one in Nexus 5. Taking out drivers, camera software from LG G2 rom and mounting it in the Nexus 4 roms. Is there big differences in camera dimensions and are the motherboard pin-stics the same?

n5 camera will work for us for sure. Just wait and see..
I dont´t think that it is so easy to replace hardware. Another camera might have a different size and wont fit into another phone. The inside of the phone is designed to fit everything perfect together in few space. Espacially the N5 cam looks bigger on the leaked pics.
Wouldn't it be easier to upgrade your phone? I'm sure after you have ruined your phone trying to de-solder and solder the new camera on you will agree.

The camera from a N5 or G2 will more than likely not fit since its totally different hardware. But the 13mp cam from the Optimus will fit.

Rather than butchering your phone, Sony's external lens would give you the best possible SLR quality photos.

Forget about it, it's troublesome on many levels. Sensor and ISP won't match, drivers and apps would need rework and the lens would give further trouble. For better camera performance you need a better device.

G3 released talk thread

Do you guys think the g2 will get updated to have the new gui?
Let's discuss other g3 features and stuff that we hope will come to g2 here as well since there's lots of excitement over it and so we don't clutter other threads

Is the G3 out on Verizon yet? For the first time ever, i'm happy with my phone.

No it's not out yet. It was just revealed today. Im probably not gonna upgrade because besides slight camera improvements the main difference is just the screen. Sadly its not water proof. Im hopefully gonna keep my g2 until the next xperia phone comes out and i hope they can slim their bezels as much as lg did

Screen, microsd card, 3GB of ram depending if its available via our carrier, and better performing camera.
Screen I'm not too excited for but it should be a pleasurable viewing experience when it dwindles down to everyday usage but possible battery killer
MicroSD is a huge plus, I've had issues with using up too much of my storage to where I can't even make nandroid backups so this is a dream come true
3GB of ram is another perk that you probably would not notice the difference in having, the current G2 doesn't have any ram issues (at least mine never did) to where the extra ram would be a major game changer
and the camera, I think it probably could end up being a toss-up whether or not its better than anything out now. The stock camera APK that came with the G2 was sub-par until people released modded camera APK's and that made me much happier. So if that's the case with the G3 then there is no real reason to complain/brag because someone will eventually fix the annoyances
Factoring all that in, I'll most likely be jumping to the G3 to see how well it is as a daily over my G2 and justify if its worth paying the $300 price tag within the satisfactory period
Don't think it's available until July 1st, and knowing Verizon add some absurd amount of time for their release. The resolution would be the main attractor as I could care less about removable battery and micro SD. But another thing that concerns me is in a youtube initial review it seems that the G3 also has aggressive thermal throttling. I do wonder if the 801 can handle the extra pixel density being pushed especially in games once they're updated for the new resolution. The 805 is apparently having heating issues in smaller devices, so there is some speculation it will only be used in tablets or bigger at this moment. I wonder if for the rest of the releases this year it wil be 801 and the 805 will be skipped for the 810.
If LG doesn't update the G2 with the new UI, I'm sure someone here will port it over.
yeah to be honest, I don't have a desire to get it. it's a slight upgrade over the g2 and now it's getting way too big. I like my g2 and i'm gonna stick with it.

I'm wondering if some dev will be able to take advantage of the laser focus camera option. Maybe turn it into a laser pointer lol

No desire here. The stock UI is prettier, but that's in the eye of the beholder. The screen looks gorgeous I'm sure, but the problem is that I feel like it is a bit much both for the battery and the chipset for relatively little perception gain in appearance. The laser focus thing is cool if it works as well as advertised. But really my biggest concern is the hardware keeping up with that many pixels, especially during things like gaming. It may be okay for a while but as updates come and things become heavier to match heavier chipsets I think the 801 may start to seem a bit weak for it. Time will tell, but even if this weren't a factor, I wouldn't upgrade. Just not worth the money for that little gain, when I have a phone that is as close to unlocked I'm going to get on Verizon, as well as some phenomenal developers. Who's to say this won't be as locked down as Samsung's offerings?

If we can't get root our recovery it would be the suck to get a g3

I second this. I have been eager to go back to moto. Their build quality is top notch......at least it was when I owned a DX.

I myself can live with the logos all over the phone just hope the specs are same for all the LG g3 so the cases wouldn't be so different types. I am willing to bet though we aren't so lucky.

This is what I thought of the g2. Now I'm, more or less, disgusted with the logo on the front. Haha

Think again about the G3. Their thread is blowing up with issues regarding heat, poor battery life, and what sounds like some pretty prevalent scrolling/ui lag. Sounds like the Adreno 330 is under powered for the pixel density.

I don't see a point in upgrading since the g2 practically runs great with the LG g3 ported rom. The only thing that caught my attention was the SD card and removable battery but even that doesn't wow me enough to make the switch. I am going to stick with my g2 for as long as I can.
