Google’s Nexus 7 stops orders due to demand - Nexus 7 General

Source: http://www.slashgear.com/googles-nexus-7-stops-orders-due-to-demand-22239712/
Google has decided to stop taking orders from its online store, assumedly because it has such a huge backlog it doesn’t even know when it will be able to fulfill new customer purchases. The 16 GB $249 tablet had been showing up as being delayed for one to two weeks. As of now, though, it’s impossible to place an order. The 8 GB model, at $199, is still available for orders.

Just FYI

Welcome to about 4 days ago, the 16gb stopped being available for order around 4 wednesday of last wk.

ooops, the article seemed new, feel free to delete post

The 16GB been out of stock since last week..

Well... good that the are stopping orders for now, they need to focus on getting the orders they already have shipped out. But bad that the 16GB may be delayed 1-2 weeks... I think that $300 went missing from my credit card as I haven't spent that much on it since I last made a payment but I won't know until layer monday when my bank updates the transactions online... hoping to see a charge for my 16GB Nexus 7 on there.
I'm not particularly mad at Google... just mildly annoyed. and I hope this was a good learning experience for them.

I think the 8gb model is good enough anyway. The transformers movie is streamed anyway by default. Unless you plan on loading tons f apps it should be fine for most.

What crystal ball are you looking at?
Markets are a fickle thing... hard to really know what is going to be a big hit and what wont be. It would appear, that the 16gb is outselling the 8gb, but who really knows real numbers are. Maybe they made a ton more of the 8gb units thinking they would sell better.
Was the Kindle Fire more popular because it was under $200 or because it was released first before the Nook tablet which was $249 or is it because it was Amazon with decent content etc...
Getting stuck with a ton of product that didn't catch on can be expensive. and playing catchup a hot product is a good position for a company to be in if they can ramp up fast enough. Sometimes constraints of available product also promote higher demand under the false sense that they are more popular than they really are. Who knows....

Or someone did a great job choking off the supply of 16GB units to force impatient buyers to the 8GB, making them more likely to buy into Google's cloud services.
"Supply crises" are much more often planned than not. Not saying they won't get the 16GB back on the market quickly, because they will. But how many buyers in the meantime will settle for 8GB and a Google Drive subscription?

That depends....Are people going to want to buy these anyways after reading all these articles mentioning all these defects. No one knows for sure if it's just 8gb or 16gb or both. Sure they got a lot of money up front but it doesn't help when you constantly have to replace them and with that kind of launch are people really going to take that risk right now. If not and they want to wait a couple months some other tablet could come out around the same price range or just a better tablet in general. You're talking lost profits at that point. Forecasting does come into it at some point but this launch didn't help at all

hmm. So they won't ship it, or refund it. Great

16GB costs $50?

Maybe this was discussed in another thread but I couldn't find it.
I know Google is said to be selling these at cost (at least the 8GB one), but does it really cost $50 to go from 8GB to 16GB?
1) They're not selling at cost (estimated profits are $15-$47 for the 8GB version)
2) It's very unlikely that the additional 8GB costs $50. This is something they call, among devices with no SD card option, "screwing you over".
I read that it cost Google $8-12 more for the 16gb
at $250, it's still a great deal for the hardware.

$100 (aka the same $6.25/extra GB that we're facing now).
I hope you're not seriously suggesting that we look to Apple pricing standards as something to be proud of.
Thanks to thebobp, raafaell and adiliyo for your thoughts.

I came from the Evo 3D forum expecting better ...but the retards will always be around. Nobody is trolling its just a simple question, if you can't answer it and want to dish out another answer, do it elsewhere
Different sources are claiming that there is either a very small profit or small loss on the 8GB, it'll depend from region i suspect and what the pricings have taken into account. If you're talking simply in terms of BOM, the 8GB costs $184 to make and their selling it for $199....profit you'd think, however factor in the $25 app credit along with other marketing and advertising costs and it does add up. VAT in the UK makes a difference too along with some sort of import duty to all the countries it will be sold in. At the end of the day it's all mixed in the books so we can never know the full truth.
Here's your link
http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/27820-nexus-7-costs-$184-to-build
It's stilla great deal, But I think it's kind of cheap not to include a SD card slot.
Here's a newer teardown cost appraisal: http://allthingsd.com/20120711/googles-nexus-7-costs-152-to-make-ihs-isuppli-teardown-finds/
Basically the 8GB version is the loss leader to get people interested and then they buy the 16GB version just in case. No different than any other retail operation.
Marketing is the study of taking the most money from the most people in the least amount of time.

You're absolutely right. How DARE Google try to make any sort of profit at all, while still giving us by far the best 7" tablet we've seen yet?!
Plus, as has been reported, any actual hardware profit goes to ASUS not Google

It cost Google like $185 to make the 8gb model. With your logic that's 15 dollars profit per device (before shipping)... What about the price of packaging each device? What about the price of distribution to third party retailers? What about the price of marketing and advertisement? And that free $25 Play Store credit, and other freebies... it might be free to us but money for those items still comes from somewhere. They're selling these for a loss...
They are in business. Since when was it *NOT* okay to make a profit when you manufacture a product?
Whatever it costs for them to make, market, and ship internally, both products are well within a fair market value.
One other thing:
If the 16GB model were $208 ($8 being the presumed cost of the additional RAM), would anyone buy the 8GB model?
Not likely. And all the 8GB models produced would sit around in a warehouse collecting dust.
When I learned of the cost for the Nexus 7, I thought hell yeah, $200 for a nice tablet. I'm in. Then when I learned it was 8 gb with no sd card, I thought, "crap, I don't want to run out of room after I put a couple big games on it. Feel cramped and out-grown while the rest of the specs are still good." I have used an old, smaller sd card on a phone before and know the frustrations of running on limited space. Always having to scour the folders to delete anything extra. I didn't want that limitation, so I went with the 16gb even though a part of me was screaming, "Are you crazy! You are paying 25% more for the exact same thing with a little bit more space!"
Even now that I know we will be able to use a usb flash drive for expandable storage, I am happy I went with the 16gb just because I won't want a dongle on it all the time. In comparison to the 8gb version, the 16gb version is no where near as good of a price. That being said, it is still a good deal, if you compare it to everything else on the market except the 8gb nexus7. I think the extra $50 is going to be a big difference to me in not having to worry as much about space and I am glad I ponied up the extra.
Price seems ok, no complains..
All,
FYI, the build COST of iPads is just 320 dollars!!!

First, for a genuine answer. No, it does not cost Asus $50 to add an extra 8 GB of flash storage.
$250 for the Nexus 7 is still a bargain either way.
For a more personal subjective answer. Asus/Google can charge what they want. You vote with your wallet, it's that simple.
So to all those people saying people are getting screwed over buying the 16 GB version.
Is Google forcing you to buy the 16 GB at gun point? No.
Will you die of hunger if you don't buy the 16 GB version? No.
Does the 8 GB version have a time bomb that explodes, punishing you for not buying the 16 GB version? No.
Will god kill a kitten for every person that pays for the 16 GB version? No.
Like I said above. You are given a choice. You vote with your wallet. It really is that simple.

I agree with you. I think the tablets are a very good value. I was just asking a simple and honest question.
I do feel that google or Asus did kind of gouge my eyes out with the price jump by bit including the the microsd. Even with everyone saying that they have to make a profit, which I agree, I still think that it was unnecessary for the price of the 16gb model and still without a microSD slot.

Angry at Google?

I think many of us (especially us Canadians who are still mostly N7-less) are pretty pissed off at how Google handled the pre-orders. I think many of you would agree that it's a reasonable expectation that pre-orders from the supplier should come before retailers are able to put theirs on the shelf. This is especially reasonable when you consider that we were charged 2-day shipping via UPS without any other alternative from Google. It has also been reported that some Canadians are getting 4-day shipping estimates even though they paid for supposed 2-day shipping.
I know that many of you will probably tell me to stop whining and just suck it up because they didn't break any promise as to the plain writing contractual agreement. But that doesn't mean that there are implicit expectations which should be met in good faith. This is especially true for a company that has a history of catering to its users and still holds the informal motto of "don't be evil".
I know that Google has always been a pretty open company and listened to feedback, and I still trust that they uphold these values. Is there anything we can do as a group of people to voice our opinions directly to them and let them know? I am sure that many of us are also developers hoping to get their first hands on the device as well. And I'm sure that Google would like to keep its developing community happy.
Addendum:
I just wanted to say why I wrote the post. This is was not meant to be a rant. If you re-read the OP, you will see that I am actually looking for a way to collectively voice to Google our discontent. That's because I believe Google to be a high-quality company that listens to its users. And I do WANT to order from Google Play again for the next device, but not before helping them improve their process by vocalizing our disappointments to them.
A rant in itself is useless, but what I am looking for is a way to let Google know where they can improve so we can enjoy a better Play store in the future.
no point of pre-ordering if we are not given any exclusivity ><

Angry is probably too strong, but i'd have hoped (as with pre-ordering anything) that you'd at least get the thing delivered on launch day. Wouldn't expect to get it early necessarily and there are clear commercial reasons why this wouldn't go down well for a product thats being sold via third parties as well as from Google directly. And if the courier is struggling to keep up then its probably Google's fault for apparently giving regional exclusivity to any single company. After all, the likes of Amazon seem to cope quite well using multiple couriers and getting large volume launches of items out on time.
And certainly the communication side of things could've been alot better done than it has been, not to mention the customer services element for those who tried unsuccessfully to can pre-orders a week or more ago.
Isn't this what that OTHER thread is for?

Can't tell if trolls or just stupid.
Did either of you even read the OP? He had an extremely valid point. We paid for required two-day shipping, supposedly in an effort to receive our products on or before the day everyone else could receive theirs. Of course this was not guaranteed by Google, but the fact that it didn't happen makes it unlikely that I'll ever preorder another Google product unless they adapt the same philosophy used elsewhere, like Amazon and Apple.
I followed the rumors since the 370T, preordered within minutes of availability, paid extra for mandatory expedited shipping, and it's finally being delivered tonight. Folks simply wandered into stores last week and picked theirs up. That's not how it should work. I'm not whining - I just believe Google should handle things differently in the future.

That's not my point as Jiggavolt has also explained. I would gladly have paid $5 or $10 shipping to get 3-week shipping rather than the 2-day shipping. But since we were required to purchase $20 (Canadian) 2-day shipping (which turned out to NOT be 2-DAY shipping AT ALL), I think it's fair to say that I feel a little cheated. Beyond that, there are implicit expectations that have not really been followed through or at least communicated. Even a simple apology to say that they were a bit slow would satisfy me.

Ha! Since you stated that so eloquently, I just can't argue with it
Yeah, I could see being upset, actually. I ended up just calling all of the Gamestop stores within 15 miles (probably 6 of them) before I found one that had one in stock.
I would be angry too, but mainly about the 2 day shipping issue. However, I believe that UPS is at fault here if they cannot deliver within two days, not Google. I did not want to pay for shipping so I picked mine up at Staples on Sunday.
It's easy. Next time Google comes out with another device. DO NOT ORDER FROM THE PLAY STORE no matter what they say. You will get PLAYED again. They named it the PLAY store for a reason.
In my mind, Google has botched the entire process from start to finish.
1. Mystery specs - for the longest time, nobody could figure out if it had MHL or HDMI out, USB OTG, external storage, etc. Even media sites were conflicted on these features.
2. Saying that it will only be available on the Played store when it wasn't.
3. Shipping to retailers FIRST before fulfilling their own pre-orders hoping that retailers will hold them for an unspecified amount of time.
4. Shipping devices in no discernible order (FIFO, LIFO), etc.
5. Shipping 8GB orders first before 16GB, and then 16GB before those that also bundled a case with it.
6. 2 day shipping questionable... existing posted screenshots showing estimated time of delivery of 4+ days confirms this.
7. Canada gets brown back and US gets black back. WTF?
8. No able to cancel orders and no response from e-mails (at least for emails from Canada).
9. No specific launch date except mid-July. It's mid-July already, and some haven't even seen movement on their orders.
10. No explanation from Google over this fiasco.
The only redeeming feature was the price.
I don't know if this is Asus' fault or not, but Google is to blame. I think what Google should have done is hold shipping to retailers until they fulfilled their own Played store pre-orders first. None of this "everyone gets it at the same time" crap... WE OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T ORDER IT AT THE SAME TIME, so why go this route? If retailers don't have stock to sell, they can't sell it. However, if they do and it is taking up space, you can bet somebody is going to break the rule... esp. when there is no specific date to sell it.
The Played store is the premiere store for buying google branded devices. Google should make sure that when you order from there, you are at least guaranteed to get it the same time, if not earlier, than all other retailers at launch. Otherwise it is pointless to pay shipping when you could just walk to your local B&M and buy it right away for the same price - minus shipping. As it stands now, you would be a fool to order from the played store for the next device no matter how exclusive it will be.
The next time around, not ordering devices from the played store will be a good lesson for google.
If Steve Jobs were alive and this was an Apple product, he would have made it right by now. God rest his soul, he's probably laughing in his grave right now.
In the words of Justin Timberlake... Cry me a river.
I can't say I'm exactly thrilled over the situation. I found out Staples has them on the shelf right now. Meanwhile, I've received nothing from Google regarding my pre-order. No status update, no shipping notification, nothing. It stings a little bit to realize I'm paying more to get it later when you factor in the shipping cost... especially when I could have one within 5 minutes since Staples is just down the road...
I'm not exactly angry to go to war with Google over this, but this is definitely some serious food for thought for future purchases. I can't see myself possibly pre-ordering through Google again.
Anyone who pre-ordered with the expectation of receiving it before those who didn't pre-order, had the wrong expectations. I've been involved with many pre-orders and known of many many more. I've never seen one with that expectation.
However, you should expect to receive it on the generally available (GA) date. That's where this release broke down. Whether it's Google or Asus, it doesn't matter. The process failed.
However number 2. When I saw that pre-orders were paying for shipping and taxes, a flag went up for me. I decided to not pre-order as it would be cheaper for me to walk into a store and buy on the GA date. I saw little value in pre-ordering.

I'm not really mad I'm just disappointed in Google's marketing. Not a lot of people buy into the nexus brand and Its really not nice to do what they are going to do but since I love this device so much I'm not going to get mad, I'm just going to right them a nice message of what I think about this on October 29th.
Now I'm thinking if I should buy the nexus 4 when they release it or wait.
I'm wondering if people sending in 8gb sets for RMA would get a 16gb back.

I guess you can still call it a rumor. But the 32GB is obviously real at $250 and the 16GB isn't going away, so it'll almost certainly drop to $200. There isn't room for an 8GB model.
I think it's just common sense at this point that the 8GB model is about to get clearanced at the end of the month.

2-3 months? That's perhaps true if you're in the US, where it's been released first - not counting some later adopters who didn't get it from day 1. That's not true anymore in some other countries, where it's been out for quite less than 2 months.

Guess what? In those countries where it's been released more recently, the credit is still active... and thus I'd bet the early 32GB buyers will still get it.
So, yes, it IS bad, when there's a 32GB model scheduled for the same price as your 16GB unit, 45 days (since there are obviously numerous leaks) after it's been available in your country.

I have to agree. The people that have had there's for 31-45 days get screwed the hardest. They're just outside the return/refund window and have had so little time with there's to really enjoy it before a price drop and a higher capacity model for the same damn price is released...

Bought the 8 at launch from the Play Store to see if I would like using a tablet. Now I use it all the time. Rely on it. So. Afraid to root it in case I brick it. Want root for Stickmount. 32G means I can have a load of storage and root my 8 with no fear. Cool. Also, its easy to forget just how low cost these devices really are. I think the 32 is a response to the ongoing criticism of the non expandable storage capacity. I like that they listened.

Now they have stopped the Play Store credit and freebies, along with great economies of scale, maybe the 8 GB will get a price cut to undermine the cheapest Kindle Fire?

That is seriously expensive
Come on, $299 is roughly 30K PKR...
Any alternatives?
Your best shot is if you have someone coming to Pakistan from the US. I ordered mine earlier Nexus 4 is 8k more expensive in the UK.

Just pray you don't get a rattling one. The initial batch has some problems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988292
The US and Canadian prices are at par, then come the Australian prices, then the European prices.
I think Homeshopping's getting it from LG directly since LG's supplying the phones at a ludicrous price worldwide... which explains why many third party chains in Europe aren't carrying the phone.
Order it from the US if you want. I would...but I already got myself upgraded to 4.2 on the GNexus. Its the hardware and price which is the most appealing factor for me, then the camera.
(I wonder how good the camera is in the released version.)

I am really looking forward to Nexus 4 and just cant wait to get my hands on it. I will keep following this thread inshallah.
any one here have some links in USA or dubai, through only personal trips we can have nexus 4. not locally
Locally it's price will be around 44 to 48. that is just Stupid.
299$ roughly comes out to be 28.7k right now..
HSN is selling 8GB @ 49k which is an insane Price. After 13th Nov,HSN were busy taking pre orders. But i dont know who would pre order 8GB version at that ridiculous price.Wait for a while, this price would go down very soon inshaAllah
Still hoping for a price drop.

so its 50k for 16gb model from shophive now! I'm a new user and this forum isnt letting me post a link here, just goto shophive dot com and the home page lists Nexus 4 16gb.
waiting for it to hit 45k and its all mine!
So i think its imp to post in this thread i just noticed as i myself am also waiting for a nexus 4 like the rest of you... sold my s2 already and am now living on a sony eric w610i which is like 7 years old... should have taken a friends advice who told me... "you dont let one girlfriend go until you have the next one IN hand"... oh well... was trying to get it from the US but thanks to the ridiculous backorders of 6 weeks its no longer possible... i was thinking there was a logical explanation for google effing up SO badly but unfortunately there is none... the amount of customers they have and will keep losing due to missing out on this christmas season is quite a horrendous publicity stunt... I for one am also having second thoughts on is it really worth he wait...?
Anywhoo... till then... guess we have xda and can get more info on the problems surrounding this phone before actually getting it... the glass back shattering is something clumsy ppl must worry about and soon enough china will be churning out bumpers at the rate the subcontinents population grows... should be a big problem...
Now... the main issue i wanted to address here is the fact how people keep going on and on about how "aawwwww commoonnnn HSN, the Nexus is ONLY for $299.... why you sell so expensivveeeee " .... to which on every comment its very convenient for them to respond by saying... "the phone isnt available anywhere for that price... please tell me where you can find it at that price..." to which every person is like UHHHHHHHHHHHhhhHHHHHhhhhh
The sad part is HSN is right... the phone ISNT available anywhere for that price... because you have to add shipping AND tax, which brings the total to around $330 for the 8gb, and $380 for the 16gb... which comes to less than but approx 33k for the 8gb and 38k for the 16gb... which means... paying 49k for a 8gb means your being over charged by more than 15k on the phone... which is RIDICULOUS... thats $150 more...
I much rather get the 16gb from shophive for 50k as someone pointed out but wait... did you notice it says "ON ORDER"... what that means is... when you order... you probably wont get it when your expecting it in 2-3 days...
Now what i dont like is when people try to run a business but conveniently DENY they keep themselves a profit margin... For Example, If you notice on HSNs wall... every post is Oh its costing us that much hence the price high, oh international market is high not our fault... Oh google has limited 1 phone per person hence cant order from there... seriously...?? unfortunately most the ppl who post arnt educated enough in the matter and when you try to educate them (like myself who had posted a similar post on their wall which OBVIOUSLY they didnt approve)...
Having said that... when the nexus sales opened they were limited to 5 phones per head... not 1... not 2... 5 per head... only AFTER the sales reopened YESTERDAY was a limit of 2 phones per head ensued. But if you will notice Looonnnngggg before yesterday there have been chants of OH NO... ONLY ONE or TWO Phones per head like Apple limits, hence we have no choice... and were like peterpan... who does all the hard work and gives you the phones for our cost price and not earn a penny out of it...
To that i say.... "N*GGA PLEASE"...
You want to do business... your absolutely entitled to it... but dont lie blatantly to everyones face... if you dont know... say you dont know... but dont pull theories out your A$$ and expect noone to call you out. Im honestly willing to pay more than the price of the phone to get my hands on it... but NOT 15k more... screw that... i much rather wait for it because as most of you know... LG resale in pakistan is as bad as motorolas ... even tho they have amazing hardware and high quality phones, when a layman here sees the logo L-G... it leaves a taste of Atif Aslam trying to sell KG-125's to the pakistani population...
Im keeping my eye out for anyway to get the nexus from abroad for a more reasonable price and will be happy to do the same for someone who wants one... in the mean time i request if anyone can order me a phone as well ill be more than grateful...
Hope those of you who took the time to read this post will try to help spread awareness about dealings in our "ISLAMIC REPUBLIC"... and help your fellow Brother and sister out in getting what they want/need....

You know there are several posts of mine there at HSN 'LG Nexus 4' thread..
What surprised me was that HSN already knew that Google has restricted the devices as only 1 device/person.It was way before the official launch when HSN Mods were spreading such lies.Same answer to each & every query.I asked them to publish my comment & i'll give you the proof that people got more than one device. They did publish my post but in response the mod posted a big reply & also showed me a link of gsmarena..that post stated that google had restricted 2 devices/person.
& about our Pak people..around 99.99% people asked the same question ie 'it is available @ 299$'
They forgot that one has to pay Shipping cost+taxes. If people know the official price, then why bother coming to HSN site & bashing them. They should go & get it @ 299$ instead.Only then people would come to know the actual price.I know HSN price right now is very high,so as every dealer out there..All are like that.Outside google play, its price is more or less the same everywhere.Look at T-mobile selling it at 499$.
But people just don't get it.This device is very popular at present time. Its demand is so high.everyone wants it.Once this hype dies, price would go down big time.
PS->$380 for the 16gb version..that's the total cost if someone receives it in USA..When you bring it to Pakistan, you have to pay tax & also shipping charges from USA to Pakistan.
If you add them all, still HSN & all other are selling it at very high price because of demand
so i just spoke to shophive... and they actually are giving the 16gb for 50k... saying they ordered a few already and got them in 3 days... next order being sent out for another 4 phones... thats a amazing price... i asked him for discounts and he said just wait and its just high due to short supply but soon when it comes in the prices will drop here because its a LG and there is no such market here for it (as i already mentioned in my previous post), so those of you who are willing to spend 50k on the nexus, shophive seems tto be the real deal... MUCH bettter than HSN...

Whoops I ordered an extra Nexus 4! (not really but some of you did)

I was thinking we could have a thread where people posted if they had accidentally ordered an extra Nexus 4 8gb, 16gb, or case and could let people know they were interested in passing it along to some of us less fortunate forum goers for a reasonable price.
I was fortunate enough to get an 8gb nexus 4, but alas no bumper case, so if anyone accidentally ordered an extra please PM me and I'll gladly paypal $25 for it.
2 extra 8gb Nexus 4
I was trying for 2 of the 8GB Nexus 4. Amidst the server error mess, I think my attempts at ordering were processed twice so I might be getting a total of 4.
I'd be willing to keep the last two and sell them here. PM me with offers.
If anybody has a spare 16GB in Germany, deel free to contact me
Didn't manage to get one
Anyone have an extra 16GB one in the US?
Help out a tech savvy hobo with one leg and no head from Netherlands, with a spare 16gb N4. Pretteh please!?
I wish i could get one, i hope the gone a come back real soon.
it's look like we become Fanboy's, waiting outside the store to get a new phone.
i got an 8g n4 but i think i'd like to trade for a 16 gb n4, let me know if anyone is interested, only local meet up in toronto
Yeah, would be awesome if somebody from the EU had an extra one... I'm from Holland.

Ha, beat you to it! ';]
Mine didn't clear the second time insufficent funds. Also people can call Google and cancel the second order.
The service to process orders was slow with so many users ordering at the same time.
Think of it like black friday. Everyone is rushing to order and stopped the system. We ran right over each other. Just keep ordering the system is
got stampeded by use greedy Americans. Google wasn't ready for this.
They didn't know how many people have been wanting out of there contracts. This is just reflecting how us Americans feel about contracts and over priced cell phone bills.
Why pay 120 a month for a cell phone bill. I can just use Simple mobile or Straight Talk and pay 55 buck for unlimited internet and phone calls.
Google is going to learn how bad people want out of there contracts.
I have a 8gb available.
I have an extra 16gb
