8gb owners come inside!! - Nexus 7 General

How are you guys going for storage? Do you wish you had more or is 8gb enough? What have you installed so far and how much have you got left. What are you using for extra storage, USB host? , WiFi drives ect

No need for more storage. I will struggle to fill 8gb.

I've got all my apps, books, couple movies and some high quality games and I still have 2-3gb left.
8gb is more than adequate for me.

I live in the cloud. No local storage for me. Some Play Music playlist(s) are stored for offline use. I use the N7 as primarily a reading device with streaming media thrown in for good measure. I have had all my media and docs in the cloud so 8gb is more than adequate. I may feel the storage crunch if I need to download and store movies for a trip...I guess we'll cross that bridge when the time is appropriate. With the Galaxy Nexus available as a tether, I just don't need excess storage.

Games are going to use up your flash drive. Just bought Max Payne which requires 1.3GB download.

Since I'm almost always in WiFi range, and when I'm not I will have a Verizon LTE phone to tether to, I left all my music in my Google Music account, which is what would have taken up all my storage. I was a little worried but so far it hasn't even phased me that I am on limited storage. For me, and I know not everyone will feel the same way, the extra $50 savings was worth it over the extra storage. After installing all my apps and loading my ROMs and emulators, I think I have about 4.5GB left out of (5.92GB user accessible). It's enough for me to put a movie on for a trip though to be honest I think the 7 inch display is still a bit too small for movies. I might have to stick with my 11.6 inch laptop for movie watching on trips even if the display is inferior to the Nexus 7.

8GB is enough for me. So far, I have 5GB free.

I have 2 GB left on my 16GB one, I guess too many games as I dont have music or video locally.
So it depends on the user.

Can you use your phone as a WiFi drive so app data can be installed on it instead?

I have all my ebooks (a lot) on board and still have 4.2 GB left.
I spent $4 to get a pair of Xoom OTG cables from FleaBay, and found a couple of tiny PNY 16 GB USB drives on sale at BestBuy for $10 each. Thats more than enough to hold anything else I would use in the way of music or videos: 32 GB for 25 bucks.

Do you work at Google doing product marketing research? I demand to be paid for my user feedback =)
8GB is plenty for me, filled mostly with pictures of my daughters so I can show people when I run into them. I'm a proud (and crazy) father.

So just to confirm if I bought a USB otg off amazon, what would it work with? Heard it does not work with certain things??
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

The one I got was from eBay, listed as being for the Xoom. The micro-usb side has a 90 degree angle. Works with everything I have (four different thumb drives and a mouse). YMMV

I've got plenty of room. I just keep my porn on a thumb drive.

I use an OTG cable and a 16gb sdhc. Its also kind of cool to be able to use USB gamepads for my emulators.

I'm using a Airstash with my Nexus and it works great. I would think that the Wi-Drive would be fine as well as they are quite similar. If you're looking to buy a wi-drive, I would also look at the Airstash as it is more versatile and portable.
I have something similar to the Airstash but more akin to a Wi-Drive.
Patriot Gauntlet Node 2.5" WiFi/USB 3.0 enclosure.
Still figuring it out but I have already had videos streaming from it on the N7.

I used a 32GB version of the Wi-Drive for testing on a 16GB Nexus 7. The updated app for it works much better than before.
The Kindle fire version has been working well for some time. There just was a problem with the generic Android app for a while. Looks like they solved the issues.

I bought mine used for $80. I think I would rather pay a little more for the flexibility (you can swap out SD cards), portability (a lot smaller), better battery life, durability (it won't break if you drop it), etc...
I'm thinking of selling this one (I have the older version) to get the newer one.

Yikes. 30-40 seconds? The Airstash is ready to go almost instantaneously.
I have the 16gb wi-drive by kingston
I was able to pick up the 16gb wi-drive by kingston for less than $40 included shipping.
Plays music fine with wi-drive (1.0.0.37, but this app is crashing two many times on Nexus 7.
Plays music videos with third party software fine.
It is not smb server.
It is has a battery that is charged via usb cable (cable is better than the one that comes with Nexus 7) and own power adapter. Battery lasted for 4 hours and 48 minutes for me. I played 101.5 mp3's during that time and listen on N7 that went from 100 percent to 51 percent during that time. I took almost four hours to recharge to full on wi-drive.
What I find the weak spot of this setup is software by Kingston, it crashed to many times.
MFG states 4 hours on charge have not test if that is true yet. This is a very small device (edit) unit gets very warm when on, would not put in pocket for this reason.

Last I checked, they did not have an Android App for it. Only iOS.
Ops... they do now... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Transcend.SJCloudNEON
Not many people have reviewed it though. You really have to be careful with some of these devices since without a good app to go with them, they can end up not working so well.
When the Wi-Drive came out and the first Droid app for it, it didn't play very well. The Kindle Fire version actually did, but using it on other android devices didn't. when I last played with the Wi-Drive, they had updated the app and it worked quite well on the Nexus 7.
So it is more than just getting the hardware device... it has to have good software behind it as well.

Nexus 4 (8gb) - Are you happy

As title states..I want to hear opinions from those who have the 8gb. Are you guys happy with the phone...storage/space wise? Or do you think the 16gb would have been a better option? If happy, how are you guys freeing up space on your phones?
Reason I ask is because I am tired of waiting for stocks to show up and am tempted to pay a little more premium ($50 extra) to get a 8gb phone. Wanted to know if it is really worth it? or should i keep waiting?
16gb would have been better, although I find 8gb enough. This is only because I have a nexus 7 that I use for all the big games (Gameloft ones).
I think when usb-otg gets working I'll be able to get some big games on it.
I am a little gutted I didn't get the 16gb, but I couldn't afford the extra money so I had no choice
I'm usually on around 2-3gb free.

Storage is holding me back

It's holding me back from buying this right now. Come on, 8GB? In reality 5.65GB, that's pathetic. y u no haz microSD?
That's why there's an option for 16gb which is actually like 11-12 GB if i remember correctly. It is a con but the phone is so nice i would really recommend it to anyone even without an sd slot

It was holding me back too, but after getting mine a few days ago, I now wish I ordered it when it first came out.
Learn to love GMail, Google Drive, Google Music, Amazon Music, DropBox, YouTube, NetFlix, Google+ auto uploads, Picasa, Box.com, etc. You don't need every mp3, picture, and video you own stored locally on your phone. 16GB is plenty for the critical stuff you need.
Didn't hold me back . ordered day one and still have about 3 GB space.

I love the 90s. Good times.
Meh. I don't know. I've pretty much put everything I want on my phone and I still have 6.5GB left on my internal storage. I guess it helps that I play all of my bigger games on my Nexus 7 tablet, but I'm pretty sure there's even an app that allows you to move your large game data to your external sd card.
I somewhat agree. however it wont change most likely.
That's like paying for a 24oz drink and the cashier gives you a 14oz drink saying you can add ice if you like aka SD card

I kinda agree. It is a little deceiving. My internal memory is almost maxed out and I was surprised when it warned me I was running out of space. I'm ok with it I guess bought a 64gig sd card so I should be good

No, because it does in fact come with 16GB of storage just not all user accessible or usable.

Sorry, I don't agree. The phone has the amount of memory advertised. Some of it is taken up by the OS and bloat. That's true on every smartphone, computer, tablet, etc that comes with an OS loaded. It should not be a surprise to anyone that the full 16gb is not available. I agree it sucks that we can't move everything to the SD card like on older releases of Android, and that we didn't get the 32gb at the launch in most places. But it is what it is, and it's no secret. If it's not enough, your choice is to live with it or take it back and wait for the larger capacity ones to (hopefully) come along later.
I'm not a big gamer and still have 9.62gb left on my S4 after loading most of what I want. I have a 32gb Class 10 Sandisk micro SD card that is over half full now with my pictures, files, movies, books, etc. So far, it's working quite well for me. But I'm sure it will be inadequate for some. And that's a shame, but it's certainly not fraud or false advertising by Samsung, IMO.
meh one of these guys will figure a2sd out for it im not worried about it. I play video games on my xbox and ps3 not on my s4. Most other apps are less than 6MBs. Not overall concerning.

We always only have the 16 GB available in store I don't know why the higher capacities are only online.
What would be cool is if they put like 8gbs extra for the os so we get a full 16 available but I'm sure that isn't possible.
It'd at least not as bad as the photon q I think that only had 8gb available and that phone doesn't even have half the features of the s4

Question for 32 gb Nexus users.

I recently bought a 32 gb Nexus after the price drop and already am troubled with storage. Looking for guidance and trying to decide if its worth returning and making the upgrade to the moto x pure since it has expandable storage. Was planning on using the nexus 6 for google fi. Could someone give me insight.
Insight on what exactly? I've been using the 32gb variant for 5 months now and have no trouble with storage. Not sure what could possibly take up so much storage besides music, movies, etc. To remedy this I would suggest using a cloud based storage to stream if you want to listen to music. There's also the option of using a small flash drive such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digi...1445546891&sr=8-2&keywords=kingston+micro+usb
Hopefully this was helpful.
Not enough? What exactly is the issue with storage. I've got a 32gb, with 2 ROMs, tibu backup, twrp backup and still have 15gb left
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
It's just that after backing up all my apps contacts and only placing 10 gigs of music on my phone I'm finding myself with only 3 gigs to spare. Cloud storage is currently not an option since I'm planning on leaving a unlimited data plan to go to google Fi and in my current budget I have room for a 2 gig capacity. I have an hour long commute a day so music is a must haha.
Deryck thanks for the link on the usb android memory reader that thing looks tiny and awesome. I was just looking at insight on keeping the nexus 6 or switching the moto x pure. Do you own that one that you sent me?? I like the idea of usb memory reader I just was worried about it possibly damaging the usb port since I keep my phone in the cupholder of my car. Just curious if you worried about durability. Also I know that stickmount is root required and have no idea if rooting causes any harm to google fi.
BlueEyes that's sweet you have so much room! Before adding anything to my phone the phone is at 25 gb. haha

Root will not mess with google fi.
The moto x pure is a nice phone but if you can find a way to work with the storage on the nexus then you'll save a few hundred dollars. I do not own that device I linked to but would not worry about durability, if it is just sitting in the cup holder there shouldn't be any damage done.

I have about 15gb of space left, but I keep all my large sized games for my previous device. This as a daily driver is really about managing space. Do you need 10gb of music? I'd consider a separate device dedicated to just music if it were me.
Thanks for the great idea Asacado I'll just convert my old galaxy s4 as a pure music and entertainment powerhouse! This will work quite well! No need to give up wireless charging bigger screen and first to update over some silly moto x pure!! Thanks everyone for helping <3 the xda community.
