So since the N7 supports USB OTG I was curious to know if a USB to ethernet adapter would work.
I ended up buying this one: http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Ethe...10/100+Fast+Ethernet+LAN+Network+RJ45+Adapter
Got it in the mail today, plugged it in and it works great. It's only 10/100 so it's not super fast but still.
I mostly was curious because I could definitely see myself using this at work to ping printers/computers to see if they're having network issues and things like that.
Make sure you plug everything into the adapter/OTG cable BEFORE plugging it into your N7. While using a mouse/keyboard/hub I noticed if you plug the OTG cable in first and then a peripheral, the N7 won't recognize it.

I'm definitely interested in doing this for my Galaxy Nexus (VZW). I would use it for the same reasons mentioned (work). Could you elaborate on the steps you took to achieve the connection? Is there a particular app that used? How do you look up the IP configuration? ifconfig? Are you able to set a static configuration? Does it work with POE ports? I know I threw a bunch of questions at you, thanks for any help you provide.
You just plug it in and it works. There's no notification or anything.
You can see what your ip address is on the N7 by typing ifconfig wlan0 or by going into the settings for wifi or ifconfig eth0 if it's plugged in.
I know how to set a static ip address through the terminal but it only lasts until you unplug the adapter. Once you plug it back in it goes back to DHCP.
It doesn't work PoE though 'cause it's bus powered.

Would you mind telling me how I can set a static IP? This would be very helpful to me. Thanks.
if you cannot set this on the tablet (as this is USB not Ethernet) you should still be able to do this on your router via dhcp settings as I do for all devices in the house as I believe its more stable and you can get to any device then via its static IP. ie printer, music server. It also means that when you move around you do not suffer from the device always having this same address ie mates house, work etc.

You could do that too and it would be whole lot easier than doing it through the terminal on the N7

Couldn't get it working with a Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. I'll have to get the one you have working.
Wouldn't a Gigabit adapter have to be USB 3.0?

I forgot to mention that with this adapter, once you shut the screen off, it turns the adapter off also so it's not constantly draining the battery

Hey, I don't mean to sound dumb..but this is the first time I've ventured into something like this. We don't have wifi at work, just LAN..would this be a good purchase to access the internet using LAN connection? Also, did it come with a micro usb connection as well? Thanks!
If you don't mind paying $20 then yea it's a good way. It doesn't come with a micro USB connector though. Gotta get a micro USB to USB adapter

Hello my fellow XDAers!
I have a blueray player that has an ethernet port. My question is besides using a hardwire. What is the simplest way to connect it to my wireless router?
I thought of several, like a ehternet bridge to my laptop, a wireless ehernet bridge, and the adapter that runs internet threw the powerwires.
Which way is the easiest, lasting and permenent solution (besides hardwire).?
Thanks!

They're all usable and good solutions, but I'd personally go for going through power lines. I don't have it myself but plan to get it very soon. A friend has it and he strongly recommends it. He gets speeds round his whole house that wifi simply could not compete with.

Its like an extension box
You plug it into a socket, and it converts the socket to a socket + Ethernet port
So for e.g.
You plug in one where you place your router, and connect it by a cable
Next, near your TV/DVD player, you connect another, and then connect the cable
And then just you need to do so more setup, cant remember now, a bit sleepy, will post tomorrow
From my fingers to your eyez
It sounds like lies, but it's true!
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm
My mate picked up 2 for a fiver in a charity shop, so he has one in a socket near his router and then can move the other one round the house as required.
I've been advised that there are 2 different types - 85Mbps and 200Mbps. As long as you get the same type then you can mix and match makes, but he got a real bargain. The cheapest I can find on ebay is £32 for 2 200Mbps ones. If you're not too fussed about the bandwidth then you can get them cheaper.

The range is supposed to degrade anything over 300m, so that's quite a lot. Yes, obviously security would be an issue if the communication wasn't encrypted, but it is. You can set the encryption keys yourself, so it's down to you if it's not secure.

That's right, the technology to intelligently modulate a signal over existing power lines has been around since the 1960's (if not longer).
I, like many others, have been looking for solutions to expand storage on the Nexus 7. Chainfire's StickMount works well with USB keys, so I thought I would try it with something more oldschool:

Unfortunately, we threw out all our zip drives and disks a while back. It was mentioned as an option though.
Also, we did try a usb CD-ROM drive, but that wasn't playing ball (I would guess it does not register as a mass storage device at all)
Glad people like it. Despite the fun aspect, the whole setup (minus floppy) really is a pretty usable netbook/nettop level experience.

What i would love to know, would it be possible to charge the tablet at the same time. I know there is a few micro USB card readers/chargers around, but would be awesome to know if Nexus 7 allow to use both at the same time.
I read a few things about the micro usb audio out, where some people say that the Nexus 7 doesn't work as host when it comes to audio, and one of the benefits by that, is to be able to charge at the same time.
Hope someone can answer this question, cause i want the Nexus 7 to replace the screen in my car, but would love to be able to mount external UBS storage and stuff like this setup, but while charging the tablet.
Maybe someone can try to make something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p10LgZFIawo
Would love to see Nexus 7 charge while mounting external USB devices as host.
Add this and youre all set!

I have tried this on the Gnex before and couldn't get it to charge off a powered UB hub. Does the 7 charge, or are you battery limited?
No love w/o hub?
Hi,
I've tried the chainfires StickMount app on my (rooted) Nexus 7 with the OTG cable and couldn't get the device to "see" the storages StickMount mounted. Goes same for USB stick and for external (separately powered) USB hard drive.
So I wonder: is the USB hub essential for this setup?
The same OTG cable (eBay "brand") works just fine with any device I attach through it on my SGS III.

I used them, but we never owned one. Our first PC at home was the TI-99/4A in 1981, which I still have hooked up and running. The Apple II was the first PC I used, around 3rd Grade in the late 70's, though I of course had played plenty of Atari by then
Dang, I feel ancient. When I graduated from high school there was no such thing as desktop pc's and only pictures of those big computors that took up at least a whole friggin room to house them.
I have made a case charger, use the dock points on N7.But it's useless.Once I plug in the OTG cable,N7 stop charge.
Very disappointed.

OTGing,not charging
Apparently the kernel [or maybe the charging hardware] disables charging when OTG host mode is enabled. I asked about simultaneous OTG & charging over on Rootzwiki, read this post:

Wow, first of all, nice job. I like what you did with the case mounted extra USB charging port lol.
And second.. damnit thats really dissapointing...
I was hoping to buy the official dock + a USB hub so I could dock the tablet to charge, access external storage, and run on an ethernet connection. Sigh.
I dont see much point in getting the official dock now :|
Why did you ever get your hopes up in the first place? The tablet was never marketed or even designed for that.
The pogo pins are not useless. When pogo pin docks are available they will prevent excessive wear and tear on the charging port.

OTG test,if you can read chinese:http://bbs.gfan.com/android-4836095-1-1.html

N7 can't provide power to USB peripheral while it's charging. Re-route USB connection through dock, and have dock power both peripheral and N7. See schematic for above-referenced homemade dock for Xperia S (no need for switches to disconnect ground or OTG).
Edit: Add switch to short D+ and D- for faster charging when OTG isn't in use.

So it'll be all down to if the current kernel supports the ASIX AX88178 Chipset. More digging or an actual test awaits.
@mariol66: provided one has USB host cable Like this one.
It seems that this one should work without any problem as drivers exist on the ASIX site.
It also seems that this product has been tested with various android tablets, like Transformer Prime.
I'm still waiting for my Note II, but this one should save me some laptop dragin' just to test a client ethernet line So I guess I'll just go ahead and order one. I just hope I don't forget to give feedback when I test it.
Hi.
As I have wrote here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933410
I have tested USB2.0 ethernet adapter (ASIX AX88772A Chipset) with my N2 (GT-N7100, Omega v12 - XXDMB2).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-to-RJ45...r-google-Android-Tablet-pad-Tab-/250894821624
It does not work with my N2, although it works great with ASUS PadFone2 and with desktop (windows7 64).
Maybe i do something wrong? I will be glad to get the hint.
Still it would be useless because usb 2.0 has max speed of 480mbit/s and if you want to use it in a gigabit network your limited to that speed
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Will be great if at least 10 or 100 mbit would work. This will be an awesome portable tester for my work. I'm using a notebook for testing it and it's very annoying to bring this damn thing always when you just need to test DHCP at network. USB 3.0 will be at Galaxy S5 / Note 4 I think. But even if you want usb network card - you need modified kernel with support of eth0 connection.
I have that exact one for my TF201. It works on the Prime but NOT on the NOTE2. Sucks, oh well
I've been able to get a trendnet 10/100 usb network card to get an ip from the command line, but the note won't use it.
Well somebitch! It works now!

So I am usually a lurker on XDA, but I thought I'd get the community's thoughts. I'm a fellow Nexus 7 owner and I want a dock that uses the pogo pins. I'm tired of waiting for ASUS and I also happen to be a mechanical engineer that works in the consumer electronics industry. So, I've mocked up my own design. It's similar to the ASUS design and will have USB charging and audio out. The only way I could bring it to market is Kickstarter.
Before I go through that much effort (Kickstarter has revised its approval process) I want to gauge demand. The sale price would be $30. I've made a poll below to streamline things, but feel free to add comments. Rendered concept below. I am also considering adding stereo RCA outputs as well. Would you want that?

|UPDATE 1|
Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm still in the early design phase so feedback helps. To address the request for speakers: at this point it's not something I'm looking to add. It adds cost, development time and complexity. Depending on how well things go if I put it on Kickstarter, a speaker option may be considered. Also, now that I've seen there is some interest, I refined the design slightly to slim it up. See below:
Would adding some sort of HDMI out be too complicated or difficult?

If you could figure out a way to make it with external speakers instead of an audio jack or (maybe I am getting ambitious here) if possible external speakers AND audio jack and I would pay the 30 dollars

I'd personally rather not pay to have a below-par amplifier included.
well, if you WANT to people buy your dock, putt 2 USB's. i would buy a dock, but a dock like this needs a USB ports. so everybody could use mouses, keyboards or harddrives.

I would love to, but the pogo pins do not support USB OTG (needed for keyboards, usb drives, etc.) That would require connecting to the micro-USB port. Also, as of now, charging while using OTG is almost non-functional. It may be possible with the Nexus 10 (6 pin pogo) but not the 7.
I'd buy it if available on Europe

Fine then, maybe I will make one myself!.....maybe.
I just can't think of a good reliable material that doesn't require big machining tools to work with it.
