Brandnew Bionic LapDock not working - Motorola Droid Bionic

I missed the Verizon $49.99 sale, so I just bought a "new" bionic lapdock from someone off eBay... I think it might be a refurb... it looks brandspankin' new, still sealed in the original box with OEM stickers all neatly wrapped up... but I'm having problems with it getting it to even work. I let it fully charge, but when I plug my Bionic into it, I can't do anything. It isn't charging... the mouse doesn't work... the keyboard doesn't work... nothing. I can see the display change, and I initially got the webtop greeting/tour page. But I couldn't click or hit OK on anything...
I was using the extended battery but I read that it might be causing an issue when docked, so I switched it out with the standard battery, and tried it, still no luck... It's almost like I'm not getting a good connection on the USB plug. I can charge the phone just fine with a regular USB cable or on my nightstand dock.
I'm also running ICS 232... not sure if this is an issue... but from what I've been reading from others, they are having luck running the webtop 3.0 fine on their lapdocks.
Anyone see this before? What are my options here?
Thanks!!

It is possible the phone isn't connecting properly to the lapdock. You should try opening the section on the lapdock that houses the connectors and see if it works when you connect them directly to the phone. If they do, try seating them again and reconnect. If they don't, then either your lapdock or your phone is malfunctioning.

Do you have a case on your phone? If so you have to take it out so the phone will seat correctly in the lapdock's cradle. Are you running official .232 Leak or a custom rom based on it, like Liquid? Have you removed or frozen any system apps? Do you have any security software (phone antivirus)? Do you have any 'task killer' apps installed?

When I bought my Bionic Lapdock I tried to use it in the store as it was an open box unit. I tried to just drop it in. I found through experimentation that you must have the screen unlocked, the Lapdock closed and then drop the phone into the holder. After a couple of seconds the Homescreen rotates and then you can open the Lapdock and it will function fine. YMMV but that process works for me.

I've never had to do anything like that.

I don't want to break it if there's still an opportunity to send it back into Motorola for repair free of charge. I will tell you this... brought it into work today, and tested it with another Bionic (stock 905) and it didn't work either. It's got to be the dock.

I don't have a case. I did have the extended battery, but I swapped back to the standard battery incase the larger back was making trouble for the connectors... but that wasn't the case. I'm stock 232... no mods, no root... no security software... no task killers... (not since my D1)

When I plug my phone into my dock (unlocked), the battery does not show that it's charging. Does yours? Also, it doesn't recognize it's in a dock... do you have a different clock pop up by any chance, like you'd see if you plugged it into a night-stand dock?
When I open the lapdock, the screen will show a "loading lapdock app" window, and then show a "welcome" page to the lapdock, but at this point, i can't use the mouse or keyboard. It's essentially non-functional... but I can see it just fine! So the HDMI works, but the microUSB doesn't.

So youre running a leak. Are you bootstrapped or safestrapped? Much to my dismay (and releif) when i bought my lapdock, i found if you are safestrapped, you can only use the lapdock on the unsafe side and i got identical results. In freaking out i did read about some lapdocks that had the ports misaligned, nut hopefully, you just gotta like the unsafe side because webtop 3.0 is awesome. Nova launcher on it is good too.
EDIT; SHOULDNT HAVE READ SO QUICKLY. IDK. Root doesnt affect lapdock. As long as the other (test phone) wasnt safestrapped, it is the dock.
Edit 2: is the white light in the upper left corner of the trackpad lit? If not double tap it. Probably not, but worth a,shot

Should still charge if it is connected properly, even using Safestrap and a custom ROM. My web top works on the unsafe side, but no custom ROMs, to my knowledge, have a functional web top ATM.
insert sig here.

I just sent my Bionic lapdock back to Motorola for the second time. It is constantly locking up, freezing, and rebooting.
My Bionic is 100% stock.

I'm not rooted... stock ICS 232. From what I could see from the welcome screen, it looks pretty sweet. Can't wait to try it. I just got my moto box in the mail, so I'll see what happens when I get it back from repair in 5 days.
I do see a white light in the left corner, but turning it on or off doesn't seem to make a different as far as the mouse went. Keyboard doesn't work either, neither does charging... it's got to be the microUSB connector, or something leading up to it.

Im thinking that has to be it. I thought i was in your shoes when i got mine, but safestrap was my problem. I found where people had to detatch and push out one of the connectors on the phone tray to fix it. Must be one from that batch. Good luck man. Moto should hook you up.

I bet your phone is the problem, not the lapdock.

Me too. Stock lapdock froze over and over again. I liked it, but webtop 3.0 doesnt do all that. Not to mention, a rom like eclipse 3.0 or Kin3tx would run better lapdock than stock. I did the webtop2sd route, partitioned 4gb for my webtop, ran commands to change it up, used different interfaces, but ultimately, the webtop 3.0 on the ics leaks is what i wanted from my lapdock. Well, minus the video lag that seems inescapable on the ics leaks.

For me, not worth it, but for many, epic:

Sent my malfunctioning lapdock in to Motorola... they repaired it... worked straight out of the box without problems on Webtop 3.0. LOVE IT. Happy ending. Happy face.

[Q] Case with Bluetooth Keyboard for NookColor

I've been looking high and low for a more generic case with included Bluetooth keyboard in it. Obviously manufacturers are not going to design this for the NookColor since it isn't even support to have bluetooth, so it has to be something more generic. I realize that the 7" Galaxy Tab is similar in size, but slightly smaller, so anything designed for the Tab specifically with no give for space is not going to work.
Has anyone found one that has worked well for them? There is one at Suntek Store (Black Leather Case with Bluetooth Keyboard for 7 inch Tablet PC
Item ID: 10010816 - I can't post a link due to not enough posts)looks promising, but my concern is that the Nook just won't fit in there.
Anyhow, thanks in advance, it would be an awesome find!

I've tested a keyboard pairing with BT and working fine, it's just been the fit that's been the issue. Most 10" tablet cases are far too large to put the Nook Color into.
I look the link you sent geek_riot, it's probably very functional but it kind of looks junky like that. I'll keep looking!
I also noticed that the BB Playbook is closer to the dimensions of the nook. I'm going to look into that option as well.
I've just ordered an eWonder bt case/kbd designed for the 7" Galaxy Tab. Hoping I can make it fit. We'll see. $39.99 at Amazon
I previously snagged a Logitech rf full size kbd/mouse combo MK320 that works perfectly with the Nook off a single dongle, but its way too big for travel, & I hate plugging in the dongle with the micro-to-A usb adapter.
Will report back my success/failure with the eWonder!

I can vouch for this one. It works great, solid, though typing at 90 WPM can get laggy.
Overall, 8.5 out of 10.

I'm not having a very good experience with the keyboard - paired easily enough, but the NC stops receiving input from it after 3-4 characters. No such issue with another generic handheld BT keyboard. :/
Anyone else using the eWonder having good success?

Has worked very well for me. I have no major complaints at all. Your milage may vary!
A couple of issues to note that you may find annoying. It is at least 3/8" thicker than other cases due to kbd. Also weighs noticeably more for same reason. Has no clasp on outside to hold both halves together when carrying. Also, it goes to sleep if no key is struck for about 5 min. When that happens, it disconnects from Nook. When a keystroke wakes it, it takes 20 sec or so to reconnect. Can be annoying. The up side is it is energy conservative. Im heavy user so I have to recharge the Nook daily (sometimes 2X/day). I charged the kbd 10 days or so ago when I first got it, had have not had to recharge it yet. Also, you REALLY should turn off the Android kbd when using the bt kbd!
Again, caveat emptor.

I just received this kybd but am unable to connect- it searches and finds "Bluetooth Keyboard" and then when I tap on it, it asks me for a PIN number. I tried both "0000" and "1234" as suggested but nothin doin. Also, how DO you turn off Android kbd?

I didn't have that prob. Did you enter the "0000" on the kbd immediately after you entered it on the Nook (i.e. type in 0000 and hit Enter)? Gots to enter it on both or it won't pair, & pretty quickly when prompted. Then, once it pairs & connects, you never have to enter it again.
To turn off the built-in kbd, go to Settings:Language & Keyboard, and if you are paired/connected, the Android kbd will be likely be checked, and Null kbd will be shown (that's the bt kbd). Simply click off the Android kbd. Keeps it from popping up each time you need to enter a line.
Come on B&N
haha they needa start coming out with these types of cases and accessories for the new revolution of tabletry lol
Nook BTkb Option
I just purchased a BT Keyboard designed for the "Galaxy 8.2-inch" Tablet.
It is a bit "loose" on the Nook; however, a couple of strips of the "hook" part of some two-part, adhesive-backed, Velcro(tm) tape and it nestles right into the keyboard holder and "frames up" nicely in the opening. The keyboard is a bit bigger, too -- which also helps those of us with "fat" fingers.
Anyway, no "warranty-voiding" modifications were required to either the Nook or the Keyboard to make it work. The cost was about $35...

That 13.3mm difference in length is equivalent to over half of an inch. I'm not familiar with the case you're asking about, but I can't think of many designs that fit well with tablet over 1/2" longer
alright...i just got here today: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bluetooth-K...Accessories&hash=item20c477fe0f#ht_2366wt_807
so based on a couple of hours playing with the keyboard. its not the best. kind of small. so my fat fingers double type alot. but maybe its something i can work out over time. another thing, the feedback isnt the best. it is very difficult to tell whether you actually pressed down on the key. my speed has been reduced because i cant tell if i actually pressed the key and the spacing is very small between the keys.
now, as far as fitment. it is a very snug fit!! the nook is a little fatter than the Samsung Tab 7". but it fits. a little stretching and a little cutting. no big deal. it does the job.
the leather...well..feels fake. so dont expect real leather...hehehe!!
but for 30bucks...not bad. pairing was easy. no issues there. i'll check back in when i've used it for a while.
if anyone has any questions...dont hesitate...post here or PM...
thanks!

lapdock 500

Im going to purchase the lapdock 500. The reviews on the 100 seem so-so, so Im hoping that the 500, being more xpensive, is higher quality, and works better. anyone have the 500, or expirence with both that they can share?
I can't provide a review yet, but it's on sale for $150 right now!!
I got this from slickdeals:
1. Go to Verizon’s site.
2. Click the big “Shop” button up top.
3. When the page loads, scroll down and click “View All” next to Accessories.
4. Click on the “DROID 4.”
5. LapDock 500 should be the first option, simply click “Add to Cart” from that page.
6. Go straight into your cart and you should see it for $149.99 rather than the $249.99.
7. Checkout and enjoy.
Good luck.
I ordered it from Amazon for $349, sooooo when I saw that deal, I about crapped! Gut on Verizon, ordered one, and have the one from Amazon all boxed and ready to go back!
For what it's worth, it's very nice, high quality, so I can't wait to get the new one here and start playing!

So, I finally got mine.
The performance is ok... kind of like using a netbook. I wish the camera would work. Also, playing youtube is a little choppy. Perhaps it's not hardware accelerated or anything.
Does anyone know if there is any work being done on the webtop 3rd party people? Is there supposed to be an update for that soon???
So IMHO, if you are on the fence for getting this, I would vote NO.
I bought this for $150 during the recent sale and was very excited, especially because I denied on the Atrix lapdock deal in Dec. for $50.
Anyway, as noted earlier, the screen is not very good. I tried to watch streaming video and it not pleasant. The bad "refresh" rate or something resulted in a sort of jittery show. That defeated my primary purpose.
The touch pad was also poorly implemented. Pressing it often moved the cursor.
Another factor although not a huge one was the software/interface was not that intuitive or impressive. I'm sure that would have improved over time (updates and my own experience) but the effort didn't seem worth it. The device is also somewhat heavy. For $50, I might have kept it, but for $150 just wasn't worth it.
Good news, I returned it at the Verizon store without any restock fee or hassle.
I am thrilled that I got the 500 during the Verizon $150 deal. The 500 makes using the Bionic for any lengthy amount of time quite usable. It is not meant to be a substitute for a laptop or netbook. I feel it perfectly complements the Bionic by extending the capabilities of the phone. I would advise using a mouse with the 500.
I've had mine now for 2 days and have done nothing but mess around with it and honestly..imho i love it! Yea the sd card, ethernet, camera and monitor out dont work but there is an update so the bionic can use the 500 to the fullest so thats great news..there are as many cons as there are goods but the cons will get fixed thru updates except for the touchpad..that really did suck..but all else is great..the screen could be better but its still great..
Cons- cant use the pull out dock idk why just doesnt work well which has to do with the software so a update fix
Touchpad sucks- use mouse
Camera, ethernet, sd card and monitor out functions dont work YET but will soon
Phone has to sit flat and cant be moved or the lapdock will shut down- dont know why but once again an update fix
Pros- everything...surf internet fast, play your games on lapdock from phone, make calls from lapdock, 7 hours battery life, charges phone while using lapdock, good speakers, nice screen and just a lot if fun...better than carrying a heavy full on laptop for simple things...one of the better investments in my life funny thing is that i also got mine for 150$ but thru CL and brand new still sealed..the guy had no clue how much this thing was actually worth!

how would you compare it to the Bionic branded lapdock itself (anyone test out both of these)? i'm assuming all the missing functionality you speak of now is simply a USB device driver to be implemented in future patches..
IMO the lapdock can essentially replace your last full sized laptop, assuming your not a hardcore gamer, audiophile, A/V troll etc lol. i am all of the above, but seriously if your using a laptop for all that get a tower ffs. screen is acceptable, viewing angle is so so, webtop itself is unimpressive but 3.0 will change all that. only complaint is the keyboard, keys feel like cheap plastic and aren't very sensitive.

Tf701 not on forum yet?

I was just wondering why the tf701 isn't added to the forum yet.
I have heard nothing about it over at xda, is it me or are people just not stoked to welcome this device?
This also makes me wonder on how development is going to be on this device..

Nope, didnt have any tablet before. the dock feels slightly cheap, but can be due to the light weight.
I've read about that reboot crash stuff aswell at amazon, but i did not experience such things so far, AND there is already a new firmware that fixes those problems (also written at amazon).
What i also like is that Asus already released the Bootloader unlocker, but since only have it since 4 days i want to wait until i do such things.
Negative points so far: No Vibration.
positive points so far: Battery, Floating Apps, not that much bloat ware.

I was able to root my tf700t without unlocking bootloader, in fact i've customized it to a maximum level using only root.
So no rom flashing or anything.
Maybe that method will work on the tf701, but I highly doubt it cause its a new processor.
Still waiting for the new infinity to come to shops, it's available in webshops but I want to have a warranty at a store.
Can't wait to have it though

I received my TF701 yesterday. In the Netherlands it is already available in some webshops.
First impression:
- crystal clear screen (in one word: WOW)
- no lag of any sort: everything works great
- graphics on games as Beach Buggy Blitz are amazing! No lag of any sort, not even on the highest resolution etc.
- tablet itself has an aluminium cover (dark grey). It does not look purple like the prime. I like it, but that's a personal thing
- WiFi is excellent! Compared to the Transformer Prime, that is not a surprise. However, the TF701 detects the same signals as the 17" laptop, a desktop PC with a USB-wifidongle and a cellphone (Samsung Galaxy S3 mini) do.
- GPS is detecting satellites instantly
And now the cons:
- the dock is made of plastic and sounds plastic, al little cheap. Everything works as it should though...
- I tried to plug in a USB-stick: some force is needed (though I thinks that has to do with the stick, which is always in my pocket...
- at start up I tried the mousepad, it did not work instantly... After I plugged in a USB-stick, it worked splendidly (every time). It seems you have to 'activate' the mousepad
- I am desperately missing root... I'd like to put back my backups, but that doesn't work right now.
- the server to update firmware automaticly was down yesterday.

Thanks for informing me ^^
About that usb stick insertion thing, I had the same thing going on with my tf700 with any usb cable or stick. it's definitely the usb port I think.
You could try and root using motochopper or a CF auto root. This doesn't affect your bootloader what so ever so if it works, its great, and if it fails.. well it just fails then, no harm there at all
I have tried motorchopper and DebugfsRoot_Generic_v2.3. They both did not work: I have no root.
And for the record: I am NOT taking a risk of HARD-BRICK my brandnew device... So no flashing and downgrades for me the next 24 months...
True.
but tbh, i flashed the new firmware today cause i had a random reboot yesterday. So far the slight lags are gone, and no reboots, i'll keep on testing
The mousepad issue has been fixed in the latest firmware update and is working fine now on my TF701
I have mine since last week (Switzerland) and I am VERY happy with it! Eagerly waiting for the forum to discuss on XDA - and root of course!
I really have no complaints about the device until now. No reboots, no problem with dock and keyboard, fast like hell, long battery life and a superduper screen )) Every USB stick I tested worked fine and my 64 GB SanDisk microSD adds a looot of fast storage. Charges in under 3 hours, I love that!
It can easily stream 1080p MKV files from my NAS with BSPlayer without struggling... Comming from Galaxy Tab 10.1 (first version) it's an upgrade in every matter I can think of!
Can someone post up some pics of the device? I heard that the US will be it first week of Nov. I hope that is true.

There are loads of pictures online that can be found with google. If you want a picture of anything specific let me know.
^^ same here: I can make pictures etc. this afternoon. Same goes for testing: if you want something tested, let me know. I'll try it then.
Really looking forward to the TF701 - thanks for the info from those lucky enough to have one already. I've been waiting ages for this - but then haven't we all!
An upgrade for my TF101 is overdue.
Glad to hear random reboots appear to be not happening / or are being resolved with OTA upgrades.
Anyone know of availability in the UK?

[Q] Worth getting without keyboard

I'm looking into getting the tf701 as my first Android Tablet. I think I've pretty much settled on it, but I just have a few questions.
Is it fully functional without the keyboard dock, or has the UI been changed in such a way that using without the dock is problematic (I don't plan on getting one for at least the first year)?
What am I missing out on without the dock? As far as I can tell, they dock offers a keyboard (duh), extra battery and USB 3 connectivity. As far as I can tell, All other slots (SD Card, headphones) are on the tablet, please correct if I'm mistaken.
Is there a dongle to enable USB without having a dock? It seems there was one for older models, but I can't find one for this model specifically.
If i connect a bluetooth keyboard, is the experience the same as with the dock? (minus battery and USB obviously)
What kind of case is necessary? Do I need a heavy duty otter box style case, or do the basic pleather ones do well enough.
The only other tablets which seem to be comparable are the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, which is something else I'm considering, and the Galaxy Note 2014 (quite a bit out of my price range). Are there any other tablets I should be looking at?
Sorry for all the questions, but these tablets aren't cheap, and I want to make sure I'm making the right decision.

hello tab works fine with out keyboard. it is just like any other tab
the keyboard adds a sd card slot. usb and battery, track pad. the tab has a micro sd slot.
it is worth getting the dock if you like to sit on the train and watch a video or do some emails/ work much more comfy than holding the tab or sitting it on a bag or lap to do this.
any case is fine i like the caseen ones.
I don't own the dock. If I wanted a dock I'd buy a laptop. For me, it defeats the whole purpose of owning a tablet.

I've had my tf701 for almost a month and I'm not a fan of not having a kb. I like being able to type faster and having different degree of tilt when I'm using the tablet, plus the extra battery life of the dock. And it's a PITA trying to hold the tablet when I'm watching a video in bed. My tf700 has a dock and I can just lay it on my lap or if I'm laying down I lay it on my tummy and angle the screen down so I have the best viewing angle and my hands are free. And to me, my tablet is my laptop replacement.

The auto-background-dimming problem kills it for me, even if there were no issues with the dock.

The dimming issue is for me really not a biggie, I hardly notice it.
But main concern is for me the dock connection problem.
My expectance is that all users who don't have the problem now wil have it sooner or later because the mechanical stress put on to the connector (both female and male side) is immense and (as electronic engineer with my own engineering company) it will fail for sure later on.
We would NEVER put an electronic device on the market with such a dorming problem!!
I had a TF700 for a year without a kb dock, it's really not necessary. Android and tablets in general are designed to be used from a touch screen. SwiftKey is a really nice keyboard btw, I like the split keyboard for thumb typing.
That being side when I got the TF701, because of the TF700's annoying lagginess, I picked up the keyboard with it on a whim. It's actually really nice to be able to plug in a real keyboard when you want to type out an email or a forum post. The track pad on the keyboard sucks by the way, but you still have the touchscreen so it's not a game killer.
on the subject of keyboards. the Japanese supplied keyboard app that runs with the dock sucks when in tablet only mode you must press enter every word you type. There is no option to remove this even with predictive off.
I downloaded a third party jp keyboard but it fills up half the screen when typing on keyboard dock and it doesn`t register the keys for changing input language.
does anyone know if there is a multi language keyboard that will work correctly with the tf701 keyboard and all it`s keys.
The physical keyboard is a real blessing especially if you have to be on the road a lot. Typing emails, longer texts just isn't and will never be as smooth and fast without a real one. I'm currently using the tf300 combined with the KB and its like a mini notebook.
Will be buying the tf701 next year - the screen is like night and day compared to the tf300 - my girlfriend just bought it and i cannot get her to trade wonder why +gg+
If yyou are looking for a great keyboard app, I'd recommend thumb keyboard, no other KB has that much customization options.
The formfactor of the TF701 (tablet+keyboarddock) is just the USP that makes people choose for this tablet.
When bought without the dock and no need for a keyboard there are more competitors with similar products which you can compare to each other.
Then things like support (updates frequently available), build quality, stability and over all speed are most important.
The dimming issue will be fixed in a future firmware update. The dock issues are being addresses as well. The tablet is less than 2 months old. We'll always suffer as early adapters with Asus. It is what it is..

I also use Thumb Keyboard and think it's hands down the best android keyboard out there. The only downside I've found is that it doesn't do swiping. I've recently discovered Swype and for quick texts on a phone it's much easier to use. For the tablet, however, it will always be Thumb Keyboard for me!
yeah it`s not supporting jp at this time so i`ll keep looking for a good app.

[Q] Common Droid 4 Problems

I currently have a Droid 3 and due to its many problems (random reboots, stuck with a black screen, keys not working properly) I am looking into replacing it. Since I want a phone with a physical keyboard I don't have much to choose from, so I am also looking at the Droid 4, especially because you can get them for ~€100 on Ebay now.
So my question is: are there any common problems like the ones I have on the Droid 3 also on the Droid 4?
Just one, the speaker sometimes stops working. I've repaired several (as easy as bend some metal pins of insert a piece of paper to use as a shim).
No problems worth mentioning other than that.
You should also consider the Photon Q 4G LTE. It's faster/snappier.

I'm having the speaker issue... since I don't really talk on the phone much, I've been living with it. Now it's gotten to the point where I can barely hear thru it at all. I sent off for a replacement ($7 or so on amazon). I'm just about to replace it, but I'm having some crazy GPS issues. Like two map programs showed my off the coast of Ghana the other day. My husband's Droid Razr GPS finds him just fine sitting right next to me, on the same carrier.
I'm not finding anyone else with this issue, so it could be a fluke. I'm running some diagnostics now. Not quite sure if this is a deal-breaker yet. I really do love having a keyboard. I'd hate to go back to Blackberry For reference: I've had the Droid 4 for almost 2 years now and it's held up well. I rooted it almost right away and let it update to ICS. I have not updated to JB (there were keyboard issues back then with JB... it could be fixed now, but I just like ICS too much to bother lol)
I want to use the phone in Europe so the Photon Q would be a bit more work (it has a soldered-in SIM-card which needs to replaced by a SIM-holder).
I am also looking at the Samsung Stratosphere II and the Galaxy S Relay.
So no random reboots or lockups? That sounds great.
I just want to make sure since I won't be able to use any warranty for an US-phone in Europe. Sadly there are no half-decent Androids with a keyboard in Europe. The best there is is the S4 with the keyboard-attachment, but that combo is so incredibly thick...
In a house hold of four I also had four Droids. Except the speaker problem I never had any issues. Yeah sure an occasional reboot. But that's it. I still have Droid 4 as backup phone in case one of the Photon dies. But that will also be replaced by a spare Photon as soon as possible.
