Hello. I have a HTC Hero with no phone service that I want to give my child for use as MP3 player, etc. I'm trying to figure out how to access the SD card to install a file manager and other apps.
Any assistance will be much appreciated.
When you plug it into usb, you should be able to drag down the notification menu and select mount as a usb drive.
oh yes of course. what i'm asking is seeing the contents of the sd card without it being plugged into the computer so i can install apps. i don't have a file manager on the phone. can the phone otherwise read the card?

Install ES Files Manager from the market, it'll let you browse the sd card.

Plz. Can any one till me how
i made a root for sgs
you don't need to root for that.
just drag and drop the files you want from PC to SD card or from Phone to SD card
you can use the build in Samsung's My Files or Astro File Manager

I'm at my wit's end trying to get my Cappy to mount on either my personal MB Pro or my work PC laptop via USB. AT&T store I went to yesterday suggested a warranty replacement, but I want everything in order first.
Is there any way to do a Titanium Backup (have the Pro version) & save that folder w/o being able to mount the phone to my computer? If they master clear to fix it I wanna be able to restore easily.
Are you on a custom rom, how are you trying to mount?
You can buy an external sd, and move the titanium backup to it
Running stock JH7 rooted. Tried Dropbox with Root Explorer but couldn't get it to work with multi select. Then zipped without realizing Dropbox didn't support that haha.
Edit: How do I move to an external SD card without being able to mount?

Put an SD card in the phone, run TIBU, use MyFiles to move or copy the TIBU folder to the external SD on the phone, remove the sd card from the phone, stick sd into computer of your choice and copy to computer.
There's no need to connect the phone to the computer directly as long as you have a computer that reads an sd card. For that matter there is no real need to copy them to the computer. When you get the new phone stick the sd card in the phone, copy TIBU folder back to internal sd card and restore.

Worked perfectly. Hadn't even ventured into My Files because I was always using Astro/Root Explorer. Ironically, My Files made it much easier to differentiate external SD b/c of a different icon...knowledge for next time. Everything's backed up, unrooted & ready for a warranty replacement conversation (2nd so far).
I have a Nook color, but my wifi isnt working on it for the moment, no worries.
I want to install applcations but from my SD Card, i have them all set up but do i need a special program to install them??
Thanks
anyone? help
I have pushed apps to the SD card & use Astro File Mgr to install.
Astro lets you "explore" the folders & when you locate the apk clicking on it will lead you to the option to install the app.
Cheers,
kev
Yeah you need a file manger program like ASTRO. That way you can access the file from the SD card. Once you're in the file manager, just click on the program .apk and then install
Thank you :d
I'm having problems with the new sd card kitkat permissions, I have rooted my phone for that reason,I have applied the fix but nothing seems to make it work.
The sd card is readable, I am simply unable to write anything on it from my phone.
1. I am using a rooted device, no need to tell me a need a rooted phone.
2. I have used 2 different apps to modify the permissions file
3. platform.xml as been correctly modified
4. I am unable to copy files to the sd card from my computer when its in my Z1.
What is wrong with my phone and as this happened to anyone else ?
If you have 2 apps they may be causing conflicts
Please post a copy of your platform.xml
Here's a copy of my platform file.
That seems correct.
Try to create a file on your SD card using any explorer app that is not installed in system (i.e one you download from the play store)
If that works then the fix is working, it may be something to do with your PC
I can't create any files or any folder from ES file esplorer. I can't even create one fom file commander.

Try putting your sd card into your PC and seeing if you can create a file directly onto it that way
I'm able to create a file from a computer but only from an adapter, not directly in my phone.

I take it you mean that if you put your sdcard into a card reader or sdcard slot in our PC it works, but not when you are connectint the phone via usb cable
If so, what error does it give? Can you copy things off the card?

Yes I can copy things to my computer.
If I try to delete something off of it, it will act as if its deleted but when I remove it and plug it back its still there.
This is the exact same problem I have! Something happens to the cards as 1 out of 3 cards is perfectly fine but something you do with the phone ****s them up permanently I think.
Bought the S2 today and after creating a new text doc using officesuite only then I realise the file cannot be saved onto the 64gb sd card I have installed, why is this so?
I have filed on this card, the tablet recognise them fine, play media files from it, read text from it etc... But I can't save documents onto it, receiving error access denied??
Please advise of how to get this to work without rooting (not keen on rooting at this stage because of warranty, will wait until warranty is over). Many thanks
Either root or ask the developer to update the app to properly request write permission to the sd card.
Work around, save to internal first then using stock file manager move to external.

I guess I just have to work around it like asphy suggested, saved to internal memory then transfer to sd card, troublesome but

I have the same issue and i download large torrents .. is there any thing else i can do?
I think the problem is with Google.
I think from KitKat on they disabled write to SD card.
I don't like it either but there are workarounds.
Remember all the Nexus machines do not take SD cards.
Maybe if we pester them they will relent and give us back our rights - after all they are OUR machines.

Could yo share some of those workarounds, please.
I'd like to download Kodi content to the external SD card (or USB stick connected via OTG), for example.
Thank you.
The easiest way is by connecting the tab to a computer. The computer sees the SD card or the USB stick and is able to write to it.
This get's around Android's limitation as the computer is Windows.
Another way with a decent file app is copying to internal memory and then use the app to move it to the SD card.

I don't understand, in your first example, how I'd be able to use that. When downloaded from the internet and writing to the SD card on the tablet.
Use the file manager app...find the file and move it the SD card from there...very simple..no need for a computer
