So I have a nexus 7 that i recently purchased. I'm still on the fence about it. My wife has an IPAD (1st gen) I find it too big for me so i never purchased one. I had a blackberry playbook (loaner) from the company for a little but everything was terrible except navigation (that was pretty cool).
So when I saw the nexus I decided to give it try but then I also saw the excite 7.7 and the AMOLED screen. The bigger screen (7.7 vs 7), MICROSD card support and the colors on the AMOLED screamed "buy me".
Anyway, I know the excite cost more money but it's not like I'm going to swap out my tablet every 2 years for a new one. I'm not really into rooting or hacking so unlocking isn't a big concern for me.
I am stuck between bigger screen, Amoled, + micro sd card vs affordability of the nexus, Jelly bean OS + future direct updates from Google
Other fear I have is how long will the AMOLED screen will last. I keep hearing stories about burn in but is it a inherent problem of OLED or is it just bad QC?
Anyway what should I do? I'm really on the fence with these 2 tablets
Return it. If you need someone else to tell you what you want you don't need it. Not trying to sound harsh but really, what ever happened to researching and buying something because you want it. You don't need a stranger to tell you that you need or want something.
If ya like it, keep it. K?

Can someone help me? I don't know which one to keep, new iPad or Etch-a-Sketch? The family (baby) use the Etch-a-Sketch more but Retina is resolutionary.

Unless you have to have the quad core tegra 3, wait until the tab 7.7 goes on clearance. It's the same thing basically but with a better build and an older processor.
As for AMOLED. The only problem you will have is if you put it on display from opening to closing on full brightness for half a year. With normal use, there is no way it won't survive like 10 years without burn in.

I did my research on both products but both seems to have good points and bad points. To me they both seem to balance each other out. If i had oodles and oodles of money I would just buy both and then give one off to a family member but I don't have that kind of cash.
I didn't want someone to tell me which to buy, I'm asking for people's view regarding the 2 and what they think.
People come to XDA for advice. They don't need people trashing them. Granted we should do some research before asking questions herebor anywhere else like. But, is looks as though the OP did do some research. You can tell this.due to the fact that he asked about burn.in when it came to AMOLED screens. And he did not hint at looking for some one to tell him what to do. It's funny, people will take the time and possibly sound like ass hats being a jerk or the like. But it is to much for them to give some sort of opinion or a fact regarding an answer to an OP question. I seriously think some people love to to find reason to complain, ***** and just be negative. If some one is being offensive then go to gold and tear them a new one. Otherwise it is better for all if you just don't speak. Thank.you and drive through.

I've got both and I prefer to use the N7 because of weight and portability but the 7.7 is great and definitely has the nicer screen and let's face it it isn't heavy. My N7 doesn't appear to have the common faults but I would wait for a fix to be put in place by Asus/Google before buying and the 7.7 is only going to get cheaper and better software over time. Short term if cost is a factor I'd buy a fixed N7 knowing I had a good tab.
You mentioned that you don't want to upgrade your tablet every two years. However at the pace these tablets evolve, both hardware and software, I think you really might want to.
The Nexus 7 at half the price of the Excite 7.7, sounds like it might be option if spending $500 on a tablet means you'll feel obligated to stick with it for several years.

Based on what you wrote and your desire to get advice, I would guess you're not going to be the biggest tablet user on the market. So I would recommend the Nexus 7. Save the money and if you find your are just loving tablet life, upgrade down the road...if not, or if you are still happy with the N7, then you're good to go.

depends on what you plan to use it for. for web browsing and book reading and anything involving white pages, the google nexus 7 will have longer battery life simply because when an oled is set to white, it can consume more than twice the amount of power compared to an lcd with an led backlit display. conversely, if you do a lot of things that use darker colours, ie. gaming, movies, etc. then the amoled will have better battery life.
both have tegra3, so its up to the price. for the price of the excite, i'd probably spend a bit more and buy a transformer, but thats just me.

The burn in is due to the degradation of the organic molecules. I have had an SGS2 since August last year and it has spent most of the screen time on minimum brightness (with TW). I have noticed there has been a bit of burn in of my wallpaper where there is a sharp contrast between very dark and very light parts of the screen. So long as you stay away from large amounts of white or blues in the background then, in theory, it shouldn't be too bad (blue degrades about twice as quickly iirc). Also if it gets particularly bad you'd probably have a case under the warranty as it is a design "fault". Obviously that's only really useful with phones so if you are planning to keep the tablet more than two years, which is likely, then this may be an issue for you.
I haven't looked at the Excite so I can't offer any opinion on which I'd prefer, except to say I have the N7 and have found particularly good.

Battery life can't really be gauged like that even though what you say isn't wrong. The tab 7.7 has the best battery life out of any tablet period and it uses an AMOLED screen. Not sure about the excite battery life though.
I did a review of the Excite 7.7, and couldn't recommend it because of what I'm guessing is the AutoBrite "feature" that Toshiba uses to conserve power. What it does basically is reduce brightness and contrast depending on what's on the screen. In the case of the Excite 7.7, whenever there's a lot of white on a page (say, a Web page), then brightness and contrast are cut way back and the screen becomes colder (i.e., more blueish) and washed out. I found it very disappointing and distracting.
Also, I didn't find the Excite 7.7 to have very good battery life. Certainly, no better than the Nexus 7, and nowhere close to what the Galaxy Tab 7.7 gets.
Here's my review, if you're interested: http://www.thetechchat.com/2012/06/25/toshiba-excite-7-7-review/

I already have a T-Mobile G2 (with CM7 installed), and after playing around with the Streak 7 about three days (bought it for $200 at Staples)...I don't know if it was worth the purchase. I still have a little over a week to return it, and I'm highly considering it.
I tried using it both with the stock Froyo (bloatware removed) and with dj_steve's Honeycomb...but in both cases, my phone can do the same thing pretty much about as fast, and more serious uses (like gaming or web browsing) are a more convenient on my 11" laptop (Alienware M11x). Not to mention, I do intend to switch to Sprint (for unlimited data), and I'll likely be getting the SGII or Evo3D, so even if I don't have a dual-core Android device now, I will soon.
I mean, it's nice that it fits in my pocket (even if just barely), but even with the Wifi tweak for battery life, it's not as long as I'd like, and the screen quality isn't that great when in portrait mode.
Maybe I just haven't found the right uses or apps for it...
-I don't commute much, and even when I do, I can't imagine any legitimate uses when offline (since I'm not using my phone as a hotspot on the go) since I don't read much, and I prefer watching videos and playing games at home on my computer
-I'll probably be getting rid of my car soon, so using it as a GPS/media player for it won't work
-When around the house, I prefer checking email and whatnot on my computer
I'd say the only real use I'd see out of it is if I were to get a laid-back security job where I could just bring it there and play around or something, but at that point I'd probably be more inclined to get a bigger tablet (maybe with a keyboard/dock, like the Transformer) since I wouldn't be too worried about having to fit it in my pocket.
So...any opinions/suggestions? More specifically, any app recommendations (preferably for Froyo) that I should look into (not necessarily ones from the Market)? The Honeycomb ROM was a bit too buggy for me (stuff not resizing properly, freezing/rebooting with certain apps, etc), I'd rather wait for an official Honeycomb.
Its all about personal preference. Don't care for notebooks... too unwealdy. I like something that fits in my hand but isn't tiny like my phone. I also have a gaming desktop so I'm covered there. I like the pad with honeystreak 2.0 for casual surfing and gaming when I'm chillin on the couch or in the car when I'm not driving.

To be truthful, I don't have a need for the tablet either. Life was fine with my laptop. The only reason I got the Dell Streak 7, and this is my first tablet, is for casual web surfing and casual gaming. The 7 inch screen is perfect for this, the phone is too small and the 10 inch is too big for my taste.
I have found you can talk yourself into or out of anything. I have had mine 3 days and and already been on all 3 roms a couple more than once. I cant put mine down. Im a atay at home dad, own this, the 5, and an ipad and this is cool. Juat the right size. I read, watch movies, edited a document and played some fun tegra games like riptide. All for 200.00. Im very pleased

Honestly I own 4 tablets I kept getting different ones expecting some other wonderful thing to happen but in reality. They are all the same.
I have a rooted cyanogen mod 7 nook color, a elocity a7 terga dual core,a dell streak 7, and a acer iconia a500. and you know what the high end iconia can do that the rooted nook color cant? NOTHING thats right any app you want torun or anything you want to do you can do on any android device period.
They all do the same internet, they all do the same apps, games, same face book, twitter. blah blah blah blah.
ONly differences in any of them is screen and speed. and to be honest my gloified nook color ereader turned tablet is just as fast as and terga dual core. sure i am sure you can get some extra frame rates or some other spec that in the real world no one notices to go a bit faster on a more expensive unit but who cares really.
I found the best deciding factor on tablets is size,(10 or 7) screen clarity, and battery life.
your either a 10 inch tablet person or a 7 inch one me im a 7 inch fan (lol no ego here). battery life again too alot of people make this into a big deal but as long as it runs till i go to bed who cares i just plug it in till morning and go again who needs a tablet to run for 7 days with out plugging it in anyway.
and for screen well thats all relative lets use the acer iconia and the transforer for example the transformer uses 16 million colors and a ips screen but its viewing angles suck. now the acer uses 165 thusand colors and jsut a regular screen but its viewing angles rock so is there a difference? the human eye only sees like 150k colors at one time anyway so whats the use of a 16 million color screen?
Long and short you need to be happy with what you buy. but you sound like I use to be it just kills you not to have or try everyone of them and no matter what one you get your gonna wish you had the other. I bet you go through phones like water too. my frinds are like that they cant stand to have a phone longer then a month and they are off getting another one.
But truth be told they all do the same thing really they do... the new 700 dollar droid does nothing the old first gen droid cant do it just does it faster is all so is it worth it?
Doesn't sound like a good fit for you. I say sell it on CL for what you paid. It could make someone's day. Someone who would lay a little love and appreciation on it.
if you want to unload it for $200 i'll take it off your hands. the streak 7 is why i joined, actually rejoined this forum
So my nexus 7 just shipped out today and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival its my first tablet and for the price as well as the specs it was the obvious choice when compared to many others. What are your opinions about the tablet? I'm curious to see what this tablet is capable of and how it handles when rooted. I also noticed that you are able to "expand" the memory?

For me, its everything you could want for 200 bucks, beautiful screen, super performance ... Its great. The non-expandable memory isn't a huge deal for me (although it used to be) because of the various clouds.
I've been reading that the colors on the nexus seem "washed" out and that some ppl have screen separation on the device. Have you encountered any of these problems? Hopefully mine doesn't have any of these issues lol. Regardless I am really looking forward to the user experience, jelly bean looks incredible!

I've owned two of these devices and also used several others, as some friends of mine bought a Nexus 7 as well. I haven't noticed the color fade as some people have been describing. I will say that the color schemes do not match up 100% to my laptop, but I'm not sure any devices matches up 100% to another. Every device I've ever seen has SOME variation in it somewhere.
Overall, I'm not convinced there's much to worry about in that department. Maybe a few people really got awful screens? Maybe some people are significantly more OCD than me? Or maybe I'm rocking the lucky train and my screen, along with the screens on my friend's Nexus 7's are just perfect? I don't know. Take it as you may.
This particular post stood out to me in the other thread. I feel as though this situation is one that easily holds water as they were able to compare two Nexus 7's (one presumably with the color wash issue) side by side. If this happens to you, as I mentioned I'd just return it. Overall, I wouldn't expect to run into one though.

That said, I am extremely happy with my Nexus 7. I never owned a tablet before, but I have interacted with them a lot at work as we've tested out iPads, Nook Colors, Galaxy Tabs, etc. This tablet is the first one that actually has a leg to stand on in terms of price vs performance. It's based on that reason alone that I did something I never thought I would: I bought a tablet.

I have to give u kudos for ur excellent grammar *no sarcasm intended*
I never really pay attention to the color of the screen as I do dead pixels. Just seems that a lot of ppl are really pointing out how disappointing the screen is, taking that into consideration I can't really expect an ipad quality display on a 200 dollar device. But the price is right and so are the specs and I too never thought that I would buy a tablet but here I am waiting for mine lol.

I have been contemplating buying this tablet for a couple days after a friend suggested it to me. I have been doing extensive research on the tablet and quite like it as whole but, some things that annoy be about the tablet is:
- Colour Saturation
The colours just aren't as lively as I would like but I guess you could get used to that..still quite a disappointment.
- Up scaled games and apps
Games and apps on the playstore are up scaled for the resolution of the tablet obviously...and this really annoys me because the quality goes down and also a lot of the apps aren't well optimised for the android OS and such.
I have been doing a lot of comparisons between the iPad mini and this tablet and I am mostly leaning towards this tablet but at the same time I think I would probably get the iPad mini if it had the retina display or had a much tighter price gap between the nexus and itself.
The main thing that annoys me is the colours, if that wasn't a problem then I wouldn't even be making this thread, is there any hack or something that a dev created that could possibly tweak these things and make it better?
Basically, the main thing I want to gain from this thread is making a decision to get the nexus 7 or the iPad Mini..
I want to make this decision based on your opinions and experiences and your own decision on which one you think would be better...money aside.
Also, I want to ask as a last question if you think I should wait for the nexus 7" 2 that is rumored to be announced at the dev conference somewhere in may...also do you think there will be a big price difference between the nexus 7" 2 and the normal one.
Thanks.
tl;dr
iPad mini or Nexus 7 or wait for the Nexus 7" 2 to be rumored to be coming out in may. Some problems with the nexus is colours and proper app support and optimisation which could be annoying. Give your opinion on the matter...money aside.
Well honestly, colour saturation on this device isn't to bad. I've had no complaints with the screen at all. And from what I know, the nexus 7 is closer to retina display than the iPad mini. There are actually a lot of apps that look very nice on this device. I'd really recommend getting an Nexus 7. As I made the same decision between iPad mini and n7, I do not regret it

I also holded back with buying it.
I'm happy that I did in the end!
Go for it.
You need to stop listening to and believing everything Apple say. It's rarely true.
Games and apps certainly aren't all upscaled phone versions. The majority of the popular apps you will use all have tablet layouts in them.
The bit that Apple don't mention, is that this means you only buy the app once, not twice... I wonder why they forgot to mention that........
Colour saturation is also another myth spread about to try and discredit the Nexus7, which spanks the iPad Mini on specs, performance features and price... If you really want a differentiator, then look at the screens between the ipad mini and the N7. The N7 is miles better, not only in resolution.
The iPad Mini is an out of date shrunk down iPad2, a rushed out answer to the N7, still hobbled by Apple's fixed ratio 4:3 fat panel format.

I have no idea what kind of unbiased answers you're looking for from a N7 enthusiast forum... These kinds of threads are stupid. Just compare the two devices yourself to make your own judgement.
I like technology, and although I can't be unbiased (I have nexus 7), I'll try to give my as-fair-as-possible opinion here:
Reasons I would go for nexus 7 and not iPad mini:
- ecosystem - if you already have android phone, all those apps will simply work
- great bang for the buck - you get a lot for your 250
- amazing high res. screen with 16:10 aspect ratio. And as soon as you disable the stupid "tegra dimmer battery saver", the colours are as good as on any other high end tablet. Aspect ratio great for movies/TV shows.
- android is really good at being the latest in terms of software. There is always something new happening: new roms, new updates, new cool apps.
- Google now, notifications, multitasking.. as mentioned, android feels fresh while iOS is pretty much outdated by today's standards.
Reasons I would go for iPad mini and not nexus 7:
- gaming. The combination of pretty average gpu (tegra 3) and lack of proper optimization from many games (all gameloft, many ea games) makes nexus 7 only an average gaming machine. iPad mini, on the other hand, runs everything with full graphics and much higher framerate, despite being "iPad 2" hardware.
- larger screen and 4:3 aspect ratio. Yes, it has lower resolution, but larger size. This works well for things like reading or browsing, esp. if you are comfortable holding the tablet further away from face. Also 4:3 is, imo, better for these things. However, movies and TV shows will be significantly worse due to lower resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio.
- Apple ecosystem - if you already have an iphone, many apps will simply work.
- looks. iPad mini is honestly the sexiest tablet I've ever held. It is much thinner and lighter than Nexus 7. And the smaller bezel size looks really good. I'm not saying nexus 7 is ugly - but iPad mini is much better looking. (also don't listen to ppl claiming that the small bezel makes it impossible to hold the device in one hand without touching the screen. I tried it a lot, and never had a problem with accidentally touching something with my thumb.)
\\edit:
BTW, in CNET's prize fight of Nexus 7 vs iPad Mini, Nexus 7 won. I was shocked, CNET was always very biased towards Apple products..
Just go a buy the damn thing you want!!
If you want an ipad mini made from ipad 2 junk scraps it's up to you but i got a nexus 7 and am the happiest guy there is (tablet speaking ).
Yes it's an awesome tablet.
I bought it as a stop gap till the nexus 10 showed up, now I don't feel like I need a nexus 10 no more.
The nexus 7 is so handy size wise. It's perfect.

Nexus 7
The iPad mini does have better color saturation and the most apps. It also probably has better gaming performance. If those things matter to you then get the mini and pay about $100 more.
If open source software and the idea that software should be free as in free to use it how you see fit then I think the Nexus 7 is it. The screen is awesome. I have seen the two side by side and the apple looks better color wise but the resolution on the N7 is awesome. Also looking at it daily I have never thought the colors were bad.
The amount of things you can do and the amount of customization you get is unequal to anything else. Updates are super fast as well. For the price I simply do not see any reason to own anything else. The apps on android work great and most have updated to tablet scaling. There is an app for everything I need and google navigation is the best.
I think Google is a better company than apple for several reasons. They sold this device at cost and develop their software in an open source ecosystem not locked down and proprietary. Sure they want your personal data but rooting and custom roms will solve that. The other thing is the hardware is the best you can get for the cost while Apple sells it's hardware for a premium and usually cripples the device or gives outdated hardware so as soon as you buy your device is outdated forcing you to continually upgrade and buy a new device. Designed obsolescence is Apple's business model. They certainly make good products and good software but their business tactics are worse than Microsoft.
I guess I still have a bad taste from buying a powerpc iBook right before the intel versions came out and the salesperson telling me that they will support powerpc for years and at least two OS versions. Not even a month later intel came out and my iBook was junk. Sure a few months it was good but after that, after Leopard I was stuck with a perfectly good machine but no support. Flash forget it. Oh well that was then. Now I want hardware that is not tied into software. I will only buy Nexus tablets from now on because of the updates and mods. I will only buy Windows pc's so I can choose windows or Linux. I have a friend with a mcbook pro from 08 and no hdmi?? A macbook pro!! My old $500 2007 gateway laptop has an hdmi output??
Enough of my rant. I like Apple products but I just know it is a money drain and no freedom. Other than that they just work great

iPad mini is good...for sheeple
Just kidding about the Sheeple comment. I like Apple hardware, just not their software and proprietary, curated ecosystem.
The Nexus 7 is thicker and heavier than an iPad mini, and the colors aren't as bright, but I like it a lot compared to an iPad mini because:
1. It's something different than what other people around me already have (apple devices).
2. I prefer to support free or ad-supported software. Google Play seems a bit less commercial than the iTunes store, and that appeals to me somehow.
3. Better customization with android over iOS, ability to root, try different ROMS
4. Much less expensive than iPad mini. I won't be out a lot of cash when/if I upgrade in a year or so
5. I hate iTunes. iTunes is bloatware that never does what I want: simply move files back and forth and organize them how I want. Lock me out of my own device, and move and rename all 1,500 of my music files without warning? I don't like being locked into one single software option for managing my own data files.
6. Works great as an eReader with the Calibre desktop program and a lot of eReading software like Moon+reader, FBreader, Kindle reader, Aldiko, etc., and I can also sync my books and comics between Android devices with these programs. Calibre works so much better than other programs I've tried.
7. My whole life is on Gmail, Google calendar, and so on. Why not go all in with Google?
To me, it feels like Apple and it's flunky iTunes is like some kind of bandit gang guarding the bridge to the internet and customer data, shaking down travelers.
Apple makes excellent, although overpriced hardware, and then tries to restrict how I use it with iTunes, and that doesn't even do what I want. Android offers way more options.
I've had The N7 for about a week now and it's been great, I haven't come across one app that didn't have a tablet UI. Of course the extent of my testing with it was downloading a bunch of free games and playing them for a few minutes. On the color saturation note, i don't see anything wrong with it, I watch quite a bit of anime and colors look vibrant.

I think Google is a better company than apple for several reasons. They sold this device at cost and develop their software in an open source ecosystem not locked down and proprietary. Sure they want your personal data but rooting and custom roms will solve that.

The main thing about this quote that I noticed is how you said that google takes my info. I wanted to ask you about in rooting and custom roms would I need to customise a setting of some sorts to enable that or does it do it automatically?
I am getting a nexus 7 guys btw. Made my final decision and I think it is a pretty good one, so yeh haha
The main thing I dislike about my Nexus 7 is the colors being too bright.
For instance, the Tapatalk app has a tan/yellowish background with black text. On my iPad and other Android devices it's a medium shade of tan/yellow. Fairly easy to read text. On my Nexus 7 it's a very light tan/yellow, and also the text does not seem to be a dark black. Very difficult to read text. I rarely use the TapaTalk app on my Nexus 7 because of this. I wind up using my other devices.

Oo I don't have that. the colours are really nice here..
I'm using the N7 especially for reading and xda. Since I have it, I'm using the phone only for texting and messaging..

Buy it. I bought it twice because a month after selling it for the N10 I missed its small form factor when I'm out on the road. For the price and size it is the perfect take a long planner, gps, mp3 player, gaming device and movie player etc. I love my N10 but it is awkward to carry along to appointments, use in the car, train etc.

I'm thinking about buying anexus7 . do you guys think it is still a good buy? Should I wait? I like the idea of a nexus 10 but the dual core CPU compared to a quad to me does not seem right. Suggestions?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Quad core does not 'always' mean better than dual core. If I had a chance (the money) to buy a nexus 10, I definitely would.
In my opinion android isn't even optimized properly for quad core, its not needed.... My nexus 7 VERY rarely needs to put use to more than two cores. The two cores of the nexus 10 are powerful ones
Not saying the nexus 7 isn't still worth buying. If I didn't have a nexus 7, I'd still end up buying one its a great device and does everything I need easily, while having a smaller screen size. (Which is perfect for me)
Press thanks if I helped ~ Nexus7/ParanoidAndroid/M-Kernel
Another should I? LOL
Well...to add something more....
The n7 is awesome. Period. If you want more awesome....spend way more, or wait for new devices.
Honestly ....people keep asking this, and its up to you. I bought one at Christmas cause its cheap and arguably the best 7" out there.
Budget, desperation and size preferences make this an apples to oranges discussion.
Not being a Dink, but seriously ....read the many threads that exist with the same question. Might help you.
People have stated their opinions on this in lots of similar threads.
Good luck, if you get one....enjoy!

I got my nexus about 3weeks ago. I do love it. But i got my so the samsung galaxy tab 2. It has things likw better. It is dual core vs quad. Bur i dknt feel any performance difference. It has sd card slot. 2 cameras. Both are better than the one camera on nexus.

^ this. already into march, a case could certainly be made for holding off a few months until new devices are unveiled, like the much anticipated successor to the nexus 7 (this would be my course of action if i didn't already have an n7). but if you need a tablet now, you can't really beat throwing down $200 for this beast.
I disagree on the N10. Power wise, the Dual core snapdragon is faster... but since it is pushing that insane resolution, it is about the same speed, or laggier, then the N7.
This is why I think uber high resolutions are a waste. Useless number game with no benefit. Just a waste of resources.
The N10 has some nice features like HDMI out but 7" and price is right on the N7. The N7 has a super high DPI. Don't upgrade something that doesn't need upgrading.
This is why the Transformer 300 is faster then the Prime, different res.
I'd buy the N7 again... and I did. We have 4 of them. And I just bought 30 for a job.

For me the N7 hits my sweet spot in terms of performance, prize and size! :good:
I'm in the same boat. I know I definitely want a Nexus tablet to replace my crappy PlayBook but I think I'm going to hold off to see what is unveiled at Google I/O before making a decision. If a successor is released I will buy that instead.
I was thinking about selling my TF700+Dock for a Nexus 7, but then again the Nexus 7 Successor should be coming out later this year. May just wait for that.
Will miss the Transformer though because of the keyboard dock (extra batt life) and it propping the screen up for viewing. Just couldn't stand the laggy IO of the TF700 though. I was reading a few other threads on here about the current Nexus 7's IO being a bottleneck, but I'm sure it's nowhere as bad as the TF700s.

I agree! I love the size of this. It's basically pocketable, even with the Sharkk keyboard case I bought. I haven't touched my iPad in three weeks since I bought it.
What's with all these "Should I buy?" threads?
Look. If you want to buy it, buy it. If you don't, then don't. How are we supposed to know your needs and what you'll be using it for? Watch some videos (there are around 3 million on YouTube) for the N7 and make the choice yourself. It's just a $200 tablet, not an Aston Martin DBS.

Hi, after owning the asus TF201 for over a year now, I also wanted to change to the nexus 7 3g.
I had several problems with the TF201 (laggy wifi, laggy bluetooth, no gps, bad overall performance). During the last year I started hating asus for this design flaw.
Now i noticed, that the N7 is also produced by asus. Should I really try another product of this company?
However, yesterday I wanted to set my order.
Fortunately I found some posts about a stuttering when streaming the audio by bluetooth and additional wifi usage. Some have this stuttering, some others report that their wifi-speed drops near zero.
For me that all sounds like the same strange problems I had with the TF201 (always thought the only reason for my problems was the aluminium-case of the TF201).
Now I'm really dissapointed. The benefit of the N7 3G would be the mobility and the additional connectivity.
I also know that the nexus is a really cheap device. Nevertheless the main-functions should work.
What do you think is the reason for this bluetooth audio stuttering? Software based or really a crappy hardware (I trust asus wouldn't mind).
It all depends. I don't remember reading about a lot of people having Bluetooth problems on a stock device. Those of us who have it are the ones usually on custom ROM's. For example I'm on Paranoid Android 3+ and it's known to have Bluetooth issues. There is also a fix for it but I didn't bother as I never use Bluetooth.
Bottom line is, most people don't have these problems. What you're reading here is a great majority of people who only have problems. That's why they're here, because they're looking around for help. Millions of users I'm sure are perfectly happy with their N7's.
Thats not just 5th best tablet. Thats 5th best consumer technology product of any kind and the top pure tablet on the list. Considering CNET's love affair with Apple this is impressive.
http://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-10-5-inch/
Not bad. Quite happy as well with the 8.4 myself after tweaking it a bit here and there. Super AMOLED is mostly the reason I keep getting Samsung stuff, if only other Android based brands would provide Super AMOLED as well and give Samsung some competition, ie LG. I only know LG as the other brand who does OLED products.
Yes. Once you have gone super amoled on an Android device it is hard to go back to LCD. Windows devices allow us to dial down the gamma which gives just as good blacks as amoled, but until Android allows that as well, amoled is your only option for truly black blacks.

Just stopped by BestBuy to look at the Surface Pro 3. Is it just me or does that thing look and feel cheap? Hated how it felt in my hands. Definitely too big for a tablet. And the screen doesn't come close to the Tab S. Super Amoled has spoiled me forever.

Agree. Somehow for me the 8-8.4 size in THE sweet spot for tabs. Got on board with SAMOLED when I bought the original "First" SAMOLED Sammy tab 7.7 a few years back. Got it up to 4.4 (thanks to Civato) and still like to play with it ever so often. Probably will never sell it. I read somewhere the 7.7 was the tab that got Apple all riled up at Sammy...lol! But this Tab S is just perfect!

I really wanted to like the Surface Pro 3 but it just was so meh to me. Plus if you read the forums it has so many problems. Overheating, throttling, wifi drops, pen drops, touch drops. Just couldn't do it.
Even at the higher resolution the ppi is actually lower than the Surface Pro 2.

The Pro 3 isn't supposed to be compared to tablets like the Tab S. It's supposed to be compared to other ultrabooks and high-end laptops like MacBook Pros and Airs.
That being said, I don't think my Pro 3 feels cheap at all. It has a very, sturdy, premium feel to it.
I've haven't compared the screens since I only have the 8.4 and the Pro 3 is so much bigger. I do love the display on the Tab S though.

I'm probably returning my 8.4.. It's slow in all tasks compared to my iPad Air.. battery life just drains when using it.. it gets hot. Android is still clunky on tablets.. iPads still do everything better in my opinion. If only Apple used this OLED panel on their iPads it would be perfect. .
For being the same price as a iPad Mini I don't see how this is a winner unless you have some aversion to iOS..
I know I must sound like a troll but this Samsung is just slow and choppy/lagging just browsing the web and yes i've tried a stripped, clean, deodexed rom as well which improved it marginally. The choice of a slow Exynos over a 801 Snapdragon is likely a reason, for a "premium" tablet and "premium" pricing Samsung went full derp on the CPU choice.
Most of my above complaints are 90% Android's fault, not Samsung.. If Android actually ran natively to hardware, it might actually smoke iOS in terms of smoothness and speed.
I think Android is far suited better to phones still, even after 3+ years of Android tablet history, it's still a bad experience.

I don't have any of the issues he's talking about, but I have the Tab S 10.5 (32Gb version) though I doubt they are much different performance wise.
In my case, it's as fast as my wife's iPad 3rd gen, but it has less issues than the iPad which was pissing me off quite often lately..
Battery life should last for weeks if not using it (dropping about 1-2% during the night).
Last time I charged it, it was about 3 days on battery, with a bit over 3 hours screen on time, and there was 72% battery remaining.
For me it's more than enough, I guess some people would need more but I'm ok with it.
Performance is great for me, I haven't had any complains.
Sure, there is sometimes a micro stutter, but they are pretty rare compared to my previous Android tablet.
All in all, it's very nice to use, I'm not thinking about the performance of the device when I'm using it, so I guess that means it's fast enough for me
It boots very fast too if turned off, the sound is better than the iPad 3rd gen, and the screen is just in a league of its own, way ahead of the iPad's and other Android tablets.
There are sometimes Android related quirks like on phones (an app that crashes, etc..) but nothing that's really annoying, and it happens rarely.
I guess you should try it out yourself though (if using one in a store, be sure to kill everything first, as it most likely is filled with stuff in RAM) before making a decision.
I am probably a bit biased because I don't like the limitations of iOS to begin with (though I was using my wife's iPad quite a bit more than my Asus Transformer Prime for performance reasons, even if I was pestering about things I couldn't do on iOS when using it ), so I was waiting for a good Android tablet, but my wife actually wants to replace her iPad with a Tab S now.. she keeps using it when I leave it at home instead of her iPad.

After selling my 32GB Amazon Fire HD 8.9", I also looked at the MS Surface Pro 3 at BB and was not impressed either! You're right, definitely felt cheap and is more overpriced than the Samsung Tab S. Once I saw the display on the Tab S, I was sold. I bought the 32GB 10.5" Tab S mid July and have not regretted the purchase at all!
