Text to speech + gReader. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, this is a bit weird and I'm sure that it's just an obscure setting somewhere on my device but...
I use gReader for my RRS/Google reader feeds. In it there is a great little function that uses the text to speech functions from either google or samsung to read aloud articles.
I've tried using TTS from both Google and Samsung - both seem to want to read to me in Spanish. So I go back to my homescreen - menu - settings - language and input - TTS output - I check all the settings make sure everything is set to English and to English UK where possible. I go back to gReader, find a wordy article and hit menu - voice reading - Still wants to read to me in Spanish.
So maybe it's a setting in gReader. I go to the in app settings, sure enough there is a settings page for the TTS. Nothing that suggests the language that will be used, with the exception of a check box asking if it should auto-translate. I uncheck this and try again. Still in Spanish.
Everything on my phone says I'm in England. Anyone know why Google TTS (when used in gReader) reads to me in Spanish?
On a sidenote the Samsung TTS does't seem to offer anything in English - however when used in Smartr alarm (the talking alarm clock app) - both Samsung TTS and Google TTS don't seem to have a problem reading to me in English.
Does anyone know whats going on or is this a case of just mailing the Developer?

Jelly Bean Google now commands

Did you get those commands to work on a sgs rom ?
http://youtu.be/fHkhp6BwnGo
I tried but I always get google search instead of the card
Most of the cards are working only for US not for outside. Same thing happened to me too.
Solution
When in Google search go to settings>privacy and accounts>and check "Search on Google.com"
This should make the cards show up on searches.
Have you set your locale manually using something like AnyLocale app? It set to russian in my phone and it is not working too. But, when I change the locale in AnyLocale to English (US) cards begin to appear.

[Q] Google Nav: no turn-by-turn or Ivona voices

On my Bionic, I used to be able to use Google Nav with turn-by-turn instructions & Ivona voice. For the past few months, I can't get either to work with it. I've just been using Waze since it does give TBT, but I miss the Ivona voices.
I've done google searches on both these problems, and turned up nothing useful.
I've deleted cache, un-installed & re-installed Ivona, done the whole "set the default/play the example/reset the default" thing, un-installed Google Maps updates, re-installed the updates, gone into settings & disabled Google voice...nothing seems to work.
Does anyone know of a way to get one or both of these things to work??? It's making me nuts.
Or, failing that, any suggestions for a good GPS program that WILL let me use the Ivona voices? I miss the Aussie girl telling me where to go.
On JB, rooted. No special ROMs but would GLADLY put one on if it would solve the problem.
I have had the issue of no voice during navigation once in a while. I generally keep the voice on mute, but sometimes when I turn it on, I don't get the voice nav. If I keep it set for voice (not muted) and restart the phone, I get the voice back. I don't know anything about Ivona voice, though.

When this happens, do you not get any voice, or do you not get turn-by-turn? I always get a voice, just not the one I want and not as detailed as I want.
Typically I get the normal voice nav, but on a few occasions I would get no voice. A restart would bring it back. Apps like Google Now still 'talk' even when voice nav is silent. Have you checked with the Ivona dev or website?
Only the IVONA US voice (Kendra) will work for me in Google Navigation; not Ivona UK (Amy) or Australia (Nicole).
Even though Amy is selected as default, Kendra's voice is used in Google Nav. However Amy's voice plays correctly in all other apps.
Interesting. I'll give her a try!
Just an update, if it can help anyone
I'm going to follow-up on this, in case anyone was using Ivona & gave up.
With the latest Google Maps update (the one that removes the Navigation icon), I can use Ivona...mostly. Maps starts navigation with the standard voice, then quickly switches to my Ivona (Aussie Nicole, in my case) & gives turn-by-turn. If I re-route, then the standard voice comes back until it figures out where it wants me to go & it's back to Ivona.
So...if you had Ivona, dumped it because it wouldn't work or could only get one voice to work, try it again. It seems to be working again.
If It Helps Anyone...
I had this problem on my Note 2 (with and without cyanogen) - it would not use Ivona in google maps tts output, no matter how many settings I tinkered with. The fix for this was to download an app to force locale settings - MoreLocale2 and Set Locale and Language from the Google play store both worked perfectly when I set them to proper "English - United States".
Interesting. I use IVONA for a while, but nowadays I switched to Google's TTS (not Pico, the new Google one) that arguably sounds as good as IVONA.

"Briefing" page in Indonesian???!

I just bought a 9.7" Galaxy Tab S2 at our local BestBuy (San Jose, California). Brought it home, turned it on, entered my Google account email and password. Everything went fine except for that leftmost swipe screen that Samsung calls "Briefing" and uses to display various aggregated news. 95% of that page is in Indonesian language! When I activated my tablet, I selected "English (United States)" as the language. Everything is "English" in my Google account. All my language and location settings are US English, US English and only US English. Yet the Briefing page articles are in Indonesian. Maybe 5% of them are in English, but the overwhelming majority is not.
I contacted Samsung Support and they connected to my tablet through their "Tutor" app. They couldn't fix it. That page is still in Indonesian.
I did two factory resets, trying not to enter my Google account info. No change. "Briefing" page articles are in Indonesian. There's was a brief moment after one of the factory resets when "Briefing" page refreshed to US-specific articles in English for a short period of time. But it didn't stick: after another refresh it switched back to Indonesian again.
In the end Samsung support gave up and said that the device is apparently defective. I'll try to exchange it at BestBuy tomorrow (being almost sure that the next device will suffer from the same problem).
Has anyone experienced anything like that? Maybe I'm missing something simple?
Actually I just saw that on my Note 5. Only just a couple of hours ago it started. Must be Flipboard having trouble or something.
I also think it's flipboard, as in the setting you select the language in the app, it has nothing to do with the google.
Well, the thing is, S2 does not have Flipboard app installed out of the box. It only has this Briefing app, which seems to be like a "reduced" version of Flipboard, responsible for displaying that leftmost screen one can sweep to. There are no region and language settings in Briefing.
However, we did try to install Flipboard app (Samsung support also tried to do it). Flipboard app does seem to have region settings and everything looks fine inside Flipboard: everything is my region-specific (i.e. US-specific) and everything is in English. But that unfortunately has no effect on the "Briefing" screen: that screen remains in Indonesian regardless of what I do in Flipboard app.
The briefing app is flipboard, if you install the full version, and log in, it should connect, I get the same content whether it's the briefing widget or from the download flipboard.
I just tried and changed the location, and I get the contents which is related to my location from flipboard or briefing.

Yes, it is but it is still a separate app with its own settings. Which seems to be not changeable.

Where exactly in Flipboard do you change the location? The only relevant setting I see there is "International Content Guides" currently set to "United States" in my case. Changing that setting has no effect on the Briefing page anyway. Why would it? This is an account-specific setting anyway, and Briefing app does not work with accounts.
I am also experiencing Indonesian flipboard news on my briefing also.

Same as what you have mention, I set it to UK, and my login details on briefing and the flipboard is identical., I log out on briefing the flipboard app also does the same, same for log in.

We might be talking about different things... My Briefing does not have any login details - it simply has no "login" features . Flipboard does.
I presume that Flipboard (if installed) is supposed to supply the additional data feed to Briefing, so in that way they share the account information. But unfortunately so far it didn't seem to help to resolve the language issue. Maybe I'm somehow supposed to install Flipboard and then set up Flipboard to completely "override" (or "overwhelm") the "default" Briefing feed? I.e. the English feed from Flipboard is supposed to "push out" the original Indonesian feed? So far I was not able to do that.
In any case, it is strange. S2 does not come with Flipboard app pre-installed. Which means that when one buys a tablet in US, out-of-the-box one gets a device with Indonesian news feed in Indonesian language and apparently no way to change that without installing an additional app (?!). And even after installing that additional app, the problem does not seem to go away.
On top of that, Samsung support was not able to figure it out after fiddling with my device for an hour.

see if you get this information, on briefing top right hand corner on the home page, there is three dots, touch that and you should get settings, underneath the setting word, you should get the login or logout.
If you are logged in, you touch the icon and a pop up will give you the option open profile in flipboard or log out.

Yes, you are right. With Flipboard installed, I do get the option to log into Flipboard or log out of it on Briefing page. Unfortunately the content of Briefing page is still Indonesian.

May be you do have a problem with yours, can you take it back to the shop and see if they can check this out, using a remote system to check is not always a good option.
Same here, have a Tab S2 and can't get the Daily Briefing out of Indonesian. On Verizon. I'm going to just disable it.
bleh
I have the same problem on my s6 I don't want to have a huge news app I just like the swipe screen to check quick but now it's all in Indonesian and I'm pretty pissed at this bloat ware with no language option
I logged into my flipboard account inside the briefing app. Does not help, still in Indonesian. And btw, how can you get the briefing app content to be the same as flipboard? The briefing app comes with pre-fixed categories (with only word filters) from curated content. Flipboard on the other hand, allows you to add your own feeds and these feeds definitely don't show up in the briefing app.
I just visited BestBuy again. All their S2 devices on display suffer from this issue, no exceptions. Their Samsung support guy, while surprised, couldn't do anything about it. (They have a dedicated Samsung support stand.)
On the other hand, while talking to the guy I did a couple of refreshes of my Briefing page and it suddenly switched to English. Incidentally, by that moment we had already uninstalled Flipboard app from my device. Go figure...
This problem just started happening yesterday on my S2 as well. I have temporarily turned it off, but it is pretty annoying.
I'm guessing it's a problem with Flipboard itself. Maybe they're having some issues or something? I hope this resolves soon. I kind of enjoy having something to read without opening another app.

It's fixed now. You can get an update for Flipboard from Google Play, then reboot the device.
Sent from my SM-T817V using Tapatalk
Yes, it appears to be working correctly now. I did not even have to update (or even install) Flipboard. I even did a factory reset and after the reset the Briefing screen continues to work correctly.
It appears that the problem was on the server side. I just happened to buy my tablet at the exact same time.
Glad it's sorted out.

Keyboard with voice input?

I have gotten voice input working with Google Now on the Fire 5th generation tablet but neither the default nor Google keyboard installed from the play store seem to have any option for voice typing. Is there a way to get it working, or something I am missing?

Go to Settings -> Keyboard & Languages -> Show/Hide Keyboards - Then Make sure Google voice typing is turned on. From then on inside the google keyboard you should key a little mic pop up in the far right of the predicted words. Clicking that will open voice keyboard. You can also from the Keyboards & Language screen set the voice keyboard as the default if so desired.

Android auto reads whatsapp only in english

From time ago when i receive a Whatsapp, Telegram msg while i'm in Android Auto and touch to hear it the Assistant reads it in English (I'm Spanish)
It's ridiculous and difficult to understand spanish messages readed like english...
Any way to solve this?
I'm from Brazil and solved it this way:
(probably should work for you, but with Spanish instead of Brazilian Portuguese)
1. Change your Android language to English (Config > Sistema > Idioma e Entrada)
2. Restart your smartphone
3. Start the Google app > Settings > Voice, select Spanish
4. In your car ask for a message to be read (should already be read in Spanish)
5. Now you can set your Android language back to Spanish
From what I've read (not tested) if the phone is restarted you'll have to do everything again.
I'll try tomorrow. Regards
It is already solved with the latest GOOGLE update
Not for me (Dutch, living in the Netherlands); I use older Google version (Google_v11.19.13.21.arm_apkpure.com.apk), works fine in Dutch - newest Google version in play store still heavy (well funny!) English accent..
For me (Dutch, Belgium) it is also solved with the latest Google version
If your language not in assistant, switch back to google now. Then AA works like with old Google version.
[REQUEST] Module to Disable Google Assistant
Now that the US Virgin Island trick to avoid Google Assistant has been fixed, a module that disables Google Assistant will really help us who doesn't like it and want to use Now On Tap. Thanks!
