eMMC bug question | Selling phone after Factory Reset - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have an international varient of the UNROOTED Galaxy Note GT N7000 which is running on OFFICIAL ICS ROM. On using 'Chainfire's Got Brick App v1.1' says:
eMMC Chip
Type: VYL00M
Revision: 0x19
Verdict: Danger! This eMMC chip is "Known" to have the brick bug!
Details of the phone:
Build No.: IML.74K.DDLPA
Base Band: N7000.DDLP4
Android Version: 4.0.3
I'm planning to sell my phone and want to delete all Google Accounts associated with it and other files, so-
1. If I Factory Reset/wipe using the in-phone method ie. the option in 'Back Up and Restore', will that hardbrick my phone?
2. If I Factory Reset/wipe using the recovery mode(3 buttons combination) will that hardbrick my phone?
I have never ever rooted my phone nor installed any leaked ICS ROMs/kernels or custom ROMs/CWM.
If all the above questions have an answer of 'Yes' then how can I factory reset my device before selling it off?

I got one answer on your 1 and 2 questions.... YES... 50/50.. either you'll get lucky and your phone will bootup fine after fully wiping it.. or it gets toasted. It's just a simple lottery draw... it's either your lucky in the first time (when wiping and booting it fine after), or you get the unlucky fate of hardbricking it.
how can you factory reset your phone before selling it??? Simple... flash it back to Gingerbread and factory reset it from there.
Cheers!

Flash to GB Stock ROM via PC Odin and wipe / format from there

Gb is safe
So flash it.....

And don't forget to format your sd card because factory reset only wipes the phone memory.

Yep - once you're back on GB.. Do your wipes in recovery, boot up and then choose to format internal / External SD's through the Settings > Storage Menu...

Ok, thanks all. Followed your guide and sold off for $483.4

Wiping software and info....

Hi, I used to have a s2, and I once got stuck in a boot loop. I can't remember how, but had to completely wipe the phone and its software and do a fresh re install.
Now I want to completely wipe my note of Any old messages, pictures, account information the lot. So none of it is retrievable. By absolutely any one, so completely gone. How can I do this? And what would I do?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
if you are rooted you can use recovery to wip the system
So nothing is ever left or retreavable? Does this need me to back up what I want...... ?
Thanks.....

yes it will wipe it to factory, alternatively just flasha stockrom that will wipe the system and set it to factory

When I first installed the first cm9 not the one now the first one released for the note I had a similar problem and all I did is factory reset (don't do that) wipe cache wipe dalvik fix permissions and everything was OK
Just some additional information:
I went from Stock GB KKA -> Rooted via Zergrush exploit (got cf-root, SuperUser and CWM)-> Installed Mobile Odin -> Flashed Stock Official LPY Firmware with everroot etc. (Got SuperSU and CWM is gone)

try without sdcard.
if it works without sdcard format it in an external reader.
In this case factory reset works. If you have cwm You can do that vai CWM recovery but as we know this will possibly brock ur phn. But if you sont have just go in android recovery just do ur factory reset from there.. I hope this helped. Njoy....

Factory reset
Hi all guys,
reading this post I saw that everyone said not to use a factory reset from CWM, because otherwise there's the risk to brick the phone.
Might I ask why?
I've used the factory reset many times in GB, and in ICS aswell (but on an HTC desire, not on the Galaxy note).
So.. why is it unsafe to factory reset trough CWM, if using ICS LPY?
I'm back on stock LPY and rooted again, everything works again!
Thank you guys, for your help!

back up your important data to your sd card just in case and remove it before doing anything. also some apps lets you back up user data. back that up to your sd card as well. will save you headache from setting up your apps again.

[Q] Stuck at Samsung Galaxy Note screen

Hello XDA,
My phone is stuck at the Galaxy Note N7000 screen (white letter black background).
I came here after a try to flash Paranoid android rom... My phone was on ICS 4.0.3.
Now the strange thing is I can get into download/recovery mode, I am able to flash stuff through odin. So what I've already tried to do is :
Flash stock rom with odin ( both 2.3 and 4.0.3 ) - No result.
Flash a other kernel - No result
I once came to the bootanimation of paranoid android but that was the only thing
Can one of you guys help ?
Ty
Flash stock GB 2.3 Rom by odin...
Then go to recovery mode and perform wipe data and factory reset.

If you are able to boot in download mode then you should be able to flash GB rom, what error are you getting after or while flashing GB using odin?
If you are stuck on Galaxy Note logo after successfully flashing GB rom then its normal, wipe in stock recovery and it will boot.
I did this, now I'm having a bootloop :S

Here is my complete lists of the actions I took:
I was on 4.0.3 rooted with and this is pretty stupid Stock or speedmod kernel I don't know anymore
Then I wiped data / cache / dalvik since that was in the instructions in the paranoid thread.
Then I flashed Paranoid android with the result of the Samsung Note Logo.
After that I flashed stock ics rom, since that didn't booted I flashed stock GB
From that moment I flashed allot of thing with the same result
I can flash stuff in odin no problem at all, everything i flashed passed !
I can flash cwm with odin and from that on I can flash everything on the note in cwm.
I hope someone can help me :crying:
Let's forget that you did all those. Follow these steps and don't jump the gun into the next step.
1. Go to download mode
2. Flash GB ROM. If possible non rooted
3. Reboot recovery
4. Wipe dalvik
5. Wipe cache
6. Wipe data
7. Reboot
Lets see if that works for you.

Check this or this (for galaxy S III though, but symptoms are same), do not attempt to follow these procedures if you are not sure about it, it's better to take it to service center before trying PIT method if you don't find any other solution.
So.. what a night (-.-)7 I came to the conclusion that the mmcblk0p10 and mmcblk0p11 partitions are corrupt in some way. When I'm home again I'm going to try the pit files but it seems that I need to do some special stuff with the mmcblk0p11 partition.... Maybe someone that has this problem aswell and still remembers stuff can post it here ?
Would be a big help
Have u tried to use GB wipe version?
It always work.
The bootloop normally due to unclean installation.

Also only do the wiping factory reset only from safe kernels.
Did you do a clean install? on safe kernel
Did you do a dance?
Did you wash your hands after using the toilet?
Ok back on topic, did you change your dpi?
i had a similar experience just a few days ago. Before your /system and /data partitions get fscked up, replace the battery and retry. I bought a new battery and now the note works back normal - I think. I just used it as a mp3 player and to surf for a few hours and no instability issues anymore, boots up perfectly.
Original battery was dated november 2011. The new one (also genuine samsung) is from october 2012 I believe.

How to clean wipe completely for OS upgrade

I am on Stock ICS and Jelly bean update will be rolled out soon by samsung.
Now i want to completely wipe out everything on my phone and do a company like fresh update to jellybean OS.
So what is the correct procedure for this ? And, i assume i have to compulsorily use Kies.
Yes because JB might only come on kies and not as OTA.
Flash a safe kernel (Philz) and go to mounts and storage > format /data, cache, preload, emmc ( internal storage) reboot.
So would still be possible to update even though you are not on a stock kernel
yes kies upgrade even on custom kernel

Yes you can upgrade via kies safely. It may most probably wipe your phone as this may need a repartitioning.
