I was using my Nexus 7, playing a game. It then static-screened and hissed for 2 secs and then died! It was charging through PC USB.

You may have overheated it. Wait a few hours and try again. also, depending on the USB charging, the charger may not have been able to keep up with the battery drain of the game and it shut down for a low battery. Use the OEM charger whenever possible.

If the device actually made a "fizzle" sound then I recommend sending it in for a replacement. Sounds like a battery leak. Was it overclocked?

I had the same problem yesterday, my battery was very low and I was using it while plugged-in a PC USB.
I was playing reckless racing, i left it on the desk for awhile when I went back to my PC. the device was on, but all of a sudden it fizzled and static screened.
I freaked out and unplugged the USB. then the device shut-down(turns black) immediately. The device was a bit hot on the back bottom. I tried to turn it on, NO GO. I plugged it in the OEM charger, NO charging screen. tried turning on, still no go.
then i look in xda. and found out someone said to hold the power button for 30s.
So, the device was plugged in OEM charger. I sat it there for like 5 mins first. then try to do the 30s.
It boot up again on like 35, or 36 second i counted.
I bet it was a low battery problem, since charging it from a PC doesn't provide enough power.
The method solved mine, and i hope it solved yours too.

I meant to say a I heard a fizzling sound when it static screened. Almost like the sound you hear with TV static but more... fizzy? :silly:

If you heard a fizzle I'd definitely still send it back in for RMA, better safe than sorry down the road.
just looping the sound file from the game before shutting down not a issue. watch that battery icon in the future.
playing nova 3 on full 1600mhz oc N7 did the same on a freeze and reset. (; have to find the settings that work right. nova 3 1500mhz with the gpu oc at 500 screams and is stable on my N7. spiderman became a fun game after the kernel flash.
Just to say it again - plugging the Nexus 7 into a PC USB port will not keep it charged during high current usage.
If you drain the battery completely - don't expect any display until you have charged it for probably an hour.
Funky noises from your game when you flatline the battery is no cause to return it.
Use a dedicated charger for game play, preferably the one that came with it.
Didn't fizzle here, just turned off and no matter how long I held power button or left charging on mains connector or on PC, the tablet was completely dead. Returned to Argos and got refund and now waiting on another Nexus 7 to be delivered but via Tesco direct this time.
Fingers crossed this one lasts a lot longer than the hour the first one did

I had this exact same problem except mine wasn't plugged into anything and my battery was not near empty. When I finally got it booted back up it was at 27% so for me it wasn't low battery. I only ever use the charger that came with it - unless I'm connecting it to my laptop for a few minutes to transfer files, etc.
This is my second Nexus 7. The first one got returned because it had problems with the touchscreen on occasion. It actually did do this static/fizzle/crash once or twice as well.
I wonder if the static/fizzle/crash issue is being addressed in hardware and/or software with a newer version of either one?
Pls tell me Asus representatives are reading these threads in xda. I can see lots of problems with the device. Google should take serious actions on this

Maybe, but I had more than a quarter of my battery left and had very similar symptoms. I think it might be related to heat generated by gaming. Maybe with low (but not out of) battery, maybe not. The touchscreen issues I experienced on my first N7 seemed to only occur after hard gaming. Maybe there's a heat dissipation issue? (Wild speculation)
Mine did exactly the same last week, thought it had died altogether but holding the power for 45 seconds sorted it.
I need help too.
My N7 turned off when the battery ran out. So i plugged to charge through PC USB and immediately when that great charger icon apear in the screen i pressed the button power, and so it go black. No more signals. Dead... No charge, no turn on anymore.
I tried to hold the power button for 30s a lot.
I opened the N7, unpluged e pluged again the battery. Nothing.
I let it charging, in the OEM charger, with OEM cable, all the night, for more than 12 hours. Nothing.
And it has a "fizzle" sound. It can be heard better when its open.
When i disconnect the battery the sound stop. If i connect the charger, even without the battery, the sound come back.
When i hold the power button for 30s the sound stop for about 3 seconds, and then restarts.
The Windows manager device recognizes the N7 as a weird "APX" (image attach).
In from Brazil, so for now will not be easy to return to google.
Any ideas?

Update:
I discovered that the unit does not appear to be charging.
Before, the OEM charger became a little hot, and now nothing.
I instaled today the program "Asus AI charger" that lets you charge a ipad in USB, and the icon charging do not apear when i connect the N7, only when i connect other devices.
So mine just fizzled and died not connected to any power source. I was at 9%. It was running a bit warm but no where near relatively hot. Will update...

I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue.
I've charged my Nexus7 overnight on three occasions. Plugging it in before I went to bed (~1AMish) and getting it on my way to work (~8:30AMish). Out of those three times, on two of them, when I went to get my tablet the unit was powered off. I know for a fact that when I plugged it in, it was on, and no one touched it in the meantime.
The most recent occasion was this morning.
On all three occasions, the unit still had 40-50% battery life left.
On two other occasions, I've charged it during the day for a few hours, and it was fine.
Additionally, I've never had the unit turn itself off overnight when it wasn't plugged in. And I'm using the charger/cable that came with it.
Lastly, the first occasion was on the stock kernel/rom, and the second was on the motley kernel (but stock ROM).
So it seems like something is causing the unit to power itself off if it's on the charger for too long. This is concerning, because the only thing I can think of is that it's overheating and shutting down as a protection mechanism.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Plugged mine in for the first time last night at 11:30. Slept till 8, hit the power button and everything was fine.
Basically, no issues here.
Was it fully charged when you switched it back on? I ask because I shut mine down for the overnight charge last night (plugged into a laptop, not the wall - there's only one socket near the bed and my battery-sucking phone gets that juice), and when I woke up it had only gone from ~30% battery to 55%.

I had this happen to me on the first unit I had... I was actually using stickmount to transfer some data and left the usb adapter plugged in for about an hour and when I picked it back up it was DEAD.... I could not get it to boot up at all until I did the recovery (power/volume) method and then everything was fine but I returned it anyways cause of a defective screen... I am now on my 3rd unit from Sam's Club and I think I might have a keeper...? (Knock on wood) :fingers-crossed:

Yes, it was at 100%.
Keep in mind that charging via computer's USB port takes much longer. Maybe your laptop went into sleep mode and shut down power to the USB port?

Nope, my fiance's phone was plugged into the same laptop and it was fully charged in the morning. And as a general rule, I've never known the computer to automatically sleep while on AC power, even when the screen is closed.
Thank god i'm not the only one experiencing this. My nexus 7 always seems to turn off after I leave it overnight plugged in for charging. I thought it was a kernel issue but i've switched kernels and i still experience it. Still unsure as to what is causing it.
Same here. Its odd it only seems to be for an extended period of time. Also my battery was indeed fully charged. Should I exchange at Sam's?

There is nothing else wrong with the tablet. I have a feeling it could be some sort of hardcoded feature where if it notices that you're plugged into the wall charger with 100% battery and the tablet is in deep sleep for a certain period of time, it automatically shuts down.

Ikr. First time it happened to me I was like wtf? It might to stop the 2 amp charger from overcharging? My unit is fine, I think the sound is just right. I might get that squaretrade warranty though.

Well, I feel a little better that I'm not the only one with this "problem".
The question is, is this a "problem" or a "feature". I guess we won't know unless we ask Google/Asus (good luck getting that answer) or enough people respond saying that it happens to them too. But if people start saying it does not happen to them, it makes it more likely to be a problem....
This happens to my phone due to overheating. The tablet does run hot when charging. See if there's a temperature logging app and run it overnight.

isnt bad to charge it overnight like i believe from 1% to 100% chrge is like almost 3hrs fully chrged.. i just alarm myself for 3hrs to check if its fully chrged already then unplug it

True, it's not good to constantly charge the battery once it's full.
Most devices however have a built in charger kill switch once it reaches that point. Laptops for example will switch to A/C power and only start recharging the battery once the level drops to ~95%. I believe my phone does this as well (SGS2).
I guess I'm OK with it turning itself off, assuming that it really is a safety feature. My main concern was something was wrong. It would have been nice if they mentioned this in the 100pg Nexus Guide eBook though .

I want to add my own observation -- mine was almost fully charged, I plugged it to my computer's USB, turned the screen off, walked away. A couple hours later, the Nexus 7 was turned off. But I was shocked to find that, pressing the power button couldn't turn it on. The first thought came into my mind was that my computer did not charge the Nexus 7 and the battery ended up completely drained. So, I plugged it to the wall charger, left it on for a day. 1 day later, I tried to turn it on again. No, it didn't work. I was panic and decided to Google about how to reset and checked if I could wipe it and sent it back for a replacement. I found that pressing the power, vol up/down button at the same time can force a reboot. I tried that and bingo, it booted into the bootloader. Before I wiped, I decided to try to boot back to the Android OS. Surprisingly, that worked. I was happy and decided to ignore this incident. Then, today, it happened again. This time, I immediately used the power + vol up/down trick to reboot, and that booted me right back into Jelly Bean. I checked the battery status and it's fully charged, which meant my computer was charging it all along. For some reasons, the Nexus 7 would just turn off itself. And, in my case, pressing the power button alone would not reboot it.

Sounds like to me that it's hard locking, not "powering off", and you're forcing a reboot. Long-press of the Power button should do the same thing.
I can't say I have much to offer in regards to this issue, but am I correct with my observation that everybody experiencing this issue has experienced it while their N7 was plugged into a computer of some sort for an extended period of time? Has anybody had this happen when plugged straight into the wall outlet?
Here's another update with an interesting 'twist' since my last post.
I've charged it twice in the meantime. Once was, again, overnight, and I woke up to find it powered off. A simple "on" press brought it back on.
However, on Saturday, I used it heavily and was down to about 40%, so I plugged it in around 11AM. I meant to grab it around 3PM when I went out, but forgot about it. Got home late, and went to look at it at about 11PM (12 hours later). It was charged to 100%, running off the A/C power, and still on.
This is weird, because if I leave it plugged in "overnight" for 8 hours, it will almost always turn off sometime before I grab it. But when left plugged in during the day for 12 hours, it stayed on. I wonder if it handled the situation different based on the time of the day???

You're saying it was plugged in and charging when the problem occurred? It may be that you are using the wrong charger. The charger that comes with the phone is rated for 5.1V output so you have to use that or plug it into a computer USB port. I had a weird issue that sounds similar to your problem when I inadvertently plugged my Atrix HD into a Samsung charger.
No no, I meant that the phone was charged, and that it didn't die because the battery went dead. They all claimed they were using factory chargers, and I know for a fact that one I couldn't revive was using a factory charger.

Mine had the same problem, but it started after I tried taking the battery out and ripped the connector on it. The battery wasn't the issue though, I tried two other batteries and had the same problem.. Sometimes it wouldn't turn on at all and just show the green led. I flashed the stock ics sbf hoping for something and It kept doing it daily for about a week but it slowly started doing it less and less. Now it just doesn't happen at all anymore. Very strange.
Well im pretty good with electronic, dis assembly and reassembly... however I may have bit the farm here. I replaced my digitizer for my device and the adhesive I purchased wasnt good enough so it was causing touch screen issues... So I took it all apart again and put it all back together to find OMG it wont turn on? Fully charged battery so I know thats not the issue and everything seems to be put in the right place (as if there is any other way to re-assemble this phone)....
So I did some trouble shooting... I tried switching to an original charger, attempted hard reboot assumed maybe the device was confused... left it on the charger as if god himself removed the remaining battery life all to no avail... However one thing I did notice is that for a while when the device was unplugged and sitting there the LED light would periodically blink red... hmm couldnt find anything on that ... Also when I remove the battery leads and plug it in the LED light illuminates green and stays that way regardless there still is no function to the phone literally a blank screen... I checked the screen and digitizer for damages both on its leads and the devices themselves and found there to be nothing wrong with them...
Im pretty sure I know the answer Im just hoping that Im wrong..
Also heres something Ive noticed as well, that when I plug both the phone in and leave the battery in it gets dangerously hot like battery about to explode hot after about 10 minutes or so

I buy broken Atrix HDs off of eBay all the time so I may be able to help. I've noticed that even though the battery is fully charged, when replacing the digitizer, the phone will think it's dead until it hits 100%. I usually have to hold the power button a Lil longer than normal, and when it turns on it will say 1% bat, remaining. It will charge the remaining battery and instantly jump to 100% when it's full.
Tl;dr: hold power until it turns on, charge to 100%

Well heres the thing. I already have been using the phone since Ive replaced the digitizer and its functioned relatively properly (aside from the adhesive not holding the digitizer down) the thing that concerns me is when I hook the battery back up to it and plug the phone in it gets dangerously hot like literally to the point where I question weather or not its going to explode also it doesnt show any LED function with the battery connected.
Go through and double check all of your connections. Also, connect it to your computer and see what device manager says.

Checked, rechecked and triple checked the connections as you know with the MB886 the connections only go one way and they either are in or not theres no middle-man. Unfortunatly my data-cable is not functioning so I cannot hook it up to the PC at the moment however I assume that if there is no function or charge with it just being plugged into the power cable then likewise would result from a PC connection. Not to mention the unexplained heat... like Im saying its almost to hot to hold kinda heat..
Well, last one I bricked it would be green light anytime it was plugged in and it had a specific register on the device manager.

When I plug it into my computer it says USB INPUT DEVICE RECOGNIZED DRIVERS INSTALLED CORRECTLY! To me that all sounds posative! Question is where to from here?
Thats with the battery out... When I hook the battery up it immediatly begins to get warm and recognizes as a Motorola USB Composite Device then starts disconnecting/reconnecting... Also during this process I noticed that the aluminum battery chassis is cracked right where the battery connects to the unit...
Do you have a second battery? If so, test the other battery. Otherwise, I am out of thoughts.

Would be nice if that worked; was using a old BB charger (all that I had at the time). Still dont have the motorola charger but have a samsung charger at 1500mA instead of 750mA
did you notice any problems with the usb socket before this happened? or it might just be a fried battery
fried battery appears to be the best guess at this point
There have been minor problems with the socket in the past but nothing that is of any concern. It registers on my laptop (Moto Desk Man) and buttons are responsive then but will not charge. No help in store either because I'm out of warrenty as well so looks like time for a new phone.

erm, you cannot misplace it, since it's not user-replaceable.
My GF has just had the same story with HTC One X - she was just playing poker app, the phone said the battery is low and then died. Completely died. I brought it to the service center and got it back in 10 days. The staff-girl said they changed 2 main-boards(!), but docket stated they changed the battery and a controller. So I'd say you don't have much choice =(
P.S. She used to use by charger for the good half of all recharges, so i just stopped using her one just in case =)
In a german forum an user had the same issue. So he bought a factory-cable (about 5 Euro), charged the battery with this and he could boot his phone again.
So maybe it's worth for you to try.

Are you using the OE usb cable? Have you tried charging using the OE wallwart?

I had the same symptoms after disconnecting and reconnecting battery,I hed to disconnect it for like an hour and then three times try to power on the tablet and it did power on. Maybe your battery is dead so after another hour you may try to use the other battery. If it will work, try to connect the batteries together so the dead one can get a little charge (but do some research I am not sure if it won't have a chance to damage anything) then the same after an hour connect try power on and if it powers on immediately give it a charge.

I had the same symptoms after disconnecting and reconnecting battery,I had to disconnect it for like an hour and then three times try to power on the tablet and it did power on. Maybe your battery is dead so after another hour you may try to use the other battery. If it will work, try to connect the batteries together so the dead one can get a little charge (but do some research I am not sure if it won't have a chance to damage anything) then the same after an hour connect try power on and if it powers on immediately give it a charge.

Just wondered if you had tried this and if so, how you got on? Asking because I bought my daughter one off ebay and it was working fine when I got it, am sure I recharged it once , she played it and then again in morning and thinks she played it till battery ran out. I have since tried charging via pc and mains power, and have disconnected battery twice (case was v. easy to remove so concerned this fault may be reason it was sold), but cannot get a flicker of a response on screen. i got my daughter this as she was desperate for an android tablet for mods for minecraft as I had bought her a Amazon Fire 7 and from what I could see just after xmas, it wasnt possible to root it or sideload at that time, and she said Amazon had no mods compared to the play store and she had been ecstatic with the mods she had found for her android for the short time she had it. I do know when I plug it into the wall charger that the motherboard area gets warm if its been plugged in for a while? Bit of a noob on this stuff,and off sick with probs with my nervous system so my concentration and memory can be a pia. Anyway I was wondering how I can find out if its goosed or what I can try? One of the batterys advertised on ebay is about £50 which seems steep to me, esp. if it doesnt fix it, and esp since I have been unable to work for a few years cos of this illness. I only bought the tablets cos I had extra money after I finally applied and got pip, and got it backdated. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced option for her for her minecraft? Should I go the tablet\notebook type route or can they not handle minecraft? Bit confused by these new notebooks esp touchscreen ones as new ones seem to have small amounts of ram yet are v. popular.

Firt I would try to trickle charge the battery.
BEFORE YOU DO THIS:
Remove the SD CARD. I forgot to do this and snapped my card straight in half removing the back cover.
This started happening to my ME176 as well but of course not until after I retired it and gave it to my mom.
I would start by letting it sit on the charger for about 30 minutes (since we don't know the current charge state and if the overcharge block is functioning). This will give it a slight charge if dead.
Disconnect charger and remove the back cover and disconnect the battery (as posted earlier). Push and hold the power button a few times even though there is no power.
It may take a few tries of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery before it decides to power up, so keep the cover off while doing this.
