Make sure that the custom rom you have use a kernel where the MMC_CAP_ERASE command is blocked. And if it wasnt blocked and you had done a factory reset or a wipe in the recovery then you might end up stuck in the odin when downgrading back to GB.
If its blocked then you can go ahead with the steps by sahil above.

I downloaded the file, extracted it to a tar.md5 file to suit odin, opened it in pda and pressed start. Now it comes up with process.google.process.gapps.com unexpectedly failed and android.process.acore.com and now it reboots itself every minute. I think I have done something wrong.

You have to wipe data in case you face so issues. But as I was not aware of the process that ODIN flashed it successfully i can't advise you to wipe as ICS kernels are unsafe and can brick your device. Way to Go!!!

It was already on the GB kernel. I was at the setup screen when the problems happened. Sorry, I forgot to add that. I knew that you can't wipe data on an ICS kernel, when I flashed ROMs I would always flash abyss kernel and then wipe data, cache and dalvik cache, I just didn't know that it was this easy to go back to stock and unroot. Thank you so much for your help.
Wouldn't hold my breath for a stock ICS XSA (Australian) ROM, though.
ICS ROMs have been out for many regions since May, however still no sign of an Aussie one - I've been waiting as well.....

After showing my mate my desire which has been rooted he asked me if id do his Galaxy S.
after following the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
I rebooted and got stuck in a boot loop. It stays at the Samsung Galaxy S screen and doesnt go any further!
Ive had to take his phone home to fix it!
Can you offer any advice on how to get it going again?
Thanks in advance,

Download Odin and an apropriate flashfile and flash the phone.
Before you start take out the sim card and memory card.
Every info on how to flash via Odin is in this forum, just search.
After that root your friends phone.
I've atached the files for rooting only on Eclair 2.1.

Did you flash Tayutama's ROM using Odin? Or did you use the update.zip method?
Well, here's all the steps you need to follow in detail:
1) Flash JM8 using Odin (follow flashing guide from Richtofen's thread).
2) Download Tayutama's JM8 ROM, rename the zip file to "update.zip" and put it on /sdcard. So it looks like /sdcard/update.zip. Turn off the phone. Get into recovery mode (volume up + home + power). Choose the option "Apply from sdcard: update.zip" or whatever. (NOTE: Don't flash this using Odin).
That's it. BTW, you lost all data on your mate's phone when you flashed JM8 onto it. Hope he isn't too mad.

Why not? You were able to do it before right? What happens if you try now?
EDIT: Wait, is it the international version of the Galaxy S (I9000) or the AT&T Vibrant (T959) AT&T Captivate I897?
Hold on just for a little while longer.
As long as the phone goes into recovery you havn't bricked it yet.
Go here and register and download a stock (non moded) firmware:
samfirmware.com
I recomend XXJM1 as that was the most stable for me until now, but other will do.
First wipe cache and format phone.
Then flash the stock firmware with repartition checked with Odin.
Then root the phone.
I've attached Odin and a text file explaining where to put each file.
Good luck.
I Can't get into recovery mode, the 3 button trick doesn't work. Im just stuck at the At&t screen, goes black and then back the at&t.

Why is there a AT&T screen on a UK Orange I9000?
The 3-button trick has never worked on that phone or stopped working after the bad flashes? (coz I read in one of your posts that you tried getting into recovery mode and deleting cache/data?)
Yes the 3 button thing did work before just not now.
I didn't know it was at&t until I had flashes it, I just downloaded it from the development section.

Please try all of these in the same order and see if anything gets the phone into Download Mode successfully.
Start with the phone turned off (remove and insert battery if necessary)
Method 1:
a) Hold down vol up + vol down.
b) While still holding down both the volume buttons, press and hold the power button.
Method 2:
a) Hold down vol up + vol down.
b) Plug in the USB cable to your computer while still holding down both the volume buttons.
Method 3:
a) Hold down only the vol down button.
b) Plug in the USB cable to your computer while still holding down the vol down button.
Don't even touch the power button in methods 2 and 3.
EDIT: Make sure the drivers are installed in the computer first. If you don't have the drivers, installing Kies would automatically install the required drivers for you. While trying these methods (connecting USB cable to computer), though, make sure Kies is completely closed (even from the system tray) and keep Odin open.

Downgrade to Stock GB via ODIN - Do your wipes - Make sure it's working in GB - Update to ICS / Flash a Stock ICS in ODIN..
Mobile network is not working too, can any one tell me how to downgrade it or is it safe to flash it with another kernel ??

yes many time i have used it on my Galaxy Ace but that was low end phone and i don't want to mess with this phone. Its all just because of OTA update from Samsung
My question is that should i have to flashed it with Gb first if yes then which region is safe to flash it with.
P.S i have ask a friend who has flashed it from ICS to ICS of different firmware by using abssyynote kernel :S
This is what my friend told me to do is it safe ?? or can be done in this way ??
i dont need to tell you that you have to be very careful in following these steps,
although i have tried them 5 times on 5 different notes successfully still mistakes can be dangerous so be careful and follow them to the letter and take your time to read before you start
also if you can do this with a laptop its better than a pc because if the electricity cut out it could mess up the phone. its safer to have a battery, btw just as i finished this line we had a black out here lol electricity cut off for the whole block
copy AbyssNotekernel42.zip and CWM.zip to the phone
power off the phone and take the battery out to make sure its off
power it back on holding volume up + home + power to go to recovery mode
choose install zip from sdcard
select the CWM.zip and choose yes install
you will get clock work mode interface then choose install update zip from sdcard again
select AbyssNotekernel42.zip and install it
power off and remove the battery and put it back
power on holding volume up + home + power to go to recovery mode again
this time it the abyss kernel recovery and it works with the touch screen
it is safe to do a factory reset from here so do it
then power off and remove the battery again and put it in
this time power on the phone with volume down + home + power to go to download mode
start Odin on the pc then connect the phone in download mode
click on PDA and then select the rom XXLPD file "N7000JPLPD_N7000OJPLP7_N7000XXLPT_HOME.tar.md5" and click start
when the phone restarts make sure the samsung logo apears then remove the battery so that it doesnt boot up
start the phone again in download mode volume down + home + power
select the speedmod kernel file and flash it to the phone same way you flashed the rom in PDA select "speedmod-kernel-n7000-ics-k3-11-Odin.tar" then click start
when the phone restarts again remove the battery after the samsung logo apears
power on the phone into recovery again for the last factory reset volume up + home + power
do the factory reset and reboot the phone
There are a few steps missing there. I would go to the link I posted above.
First download Odin 1.85 from link A. 1
Next download pre rooted GB from A.8 and flash it using Odin under pda
Then down load lpy open German 4.0.3 which you want from B.1 and flash in PDA using Odin.
That's it your done!
You comfortable with that?

Try selecting the option of automatically download firmware in kies so it should download the firmware first b4 installing.

You got 3 options.
1, try to see if you can change or use a different USB cable... and try plugging it again
2 clean out (if there are), lints, and specks of dusts inside your usb port using a cotton bud and try again.
3. Yes you can use PC Odin, download first your official firmware(of your specific region thru www.samfirmware.com) and flash it using PcOdin. Root it and run Triangle Away after to reset your binary counter.
P.S. Don't ever try to attempt making a wipe for factory reset after you've flash the new stock ICS firmware as there's a big chance you might brick your phone (with an unsafe kernel). If you need to wipe/factory reset, flash first a safe kernel then do the wipe after.
Thanks
Thanks for both replies, I tried a different USB cable, still no good. But the update worked after I put phone into download mode. yes you should install a safe kernel... you never know in the long run if your going to take the route of wiping data on your phone... and if your on a stock ICS kernel at that time of wiping... then pray hard that your phone will still boot up then (after the wipe), co'z if not.. then your out of luck.. (if you get what I mean).
The soon to be release JB OTA is far from the horizon in my vocabulary... wait perhaps next year, perhaps that'll be the time when good prospects and better optimism comes in.
To answer your last Q.. Yes, your phone will still get that much anticipated JB update (as the updates depends mostly on the CSC of your phone and not the kernel installed).
P.S... There is a 'Thanks' Button you know at the left bottom side of my Avatar name.. you can actually click that, saves you much time and effort instead of typing the word itself...

it's a matter of choice and preference. Scout and check every ROMs (on this forums), and read the changelogs/screenshots of each one. Don't take most of the advice of which ROM works for you. Remember it's your take and choice. What ROM works for others might not necessariy fits your liking as well, so choose wisely. There are no "Best Rom" out there, always remember that. It is always going to be subjective to the people using it (and necessarily again, what works for others might not necessarily work for you).

For starters allow me to say I am totally new to Android and it took me like a week to get everything on my phone working properly (Root, clockwork mod etc.) plus I am not very computer savvy so I dont even know what half of the stuff I did means so sorry If i am asking what seems like stupid questions and I thank you for your assistance.
My phone was going nutty for a while, resetting out of no where, ringing but no option to answer the phone etc. So what I did was reset to factory and was going to just deal with re installing all of my items. Well after obviously doing something I should not have, my phone is no longer functioning properly at all and is stuck in some sort of loop.
When i reboot into recovery mode (vol up+home+power) I get Hyperdroid RedPill Recovery mode, but no files to get the phone started on the phone or the external sd. (is there a zip that I can just put on my card to get the phone back to normal?)
There is nothing to restore or install present at the moment.
When i do vol down i just get this cycle of it seemingly trying to load the firmware I had before I screwed up my phone * photo
I have searched for my exact issue on here but have only seen bits and pieces so not wanting to go ahead with a suggestion and it not be applicable to my phone in its entirety so that is why I am asking here specifically. (been to countless unbrick threads but not sure what my situation is exactly)
Thank you for any help

I think your on AbyssNote kernel that's why you have that hyperdroid red pill recovery... now if you can, try to see if you can download a stock GB ROM in ZIP format and and see if you can save it on your external sd card.. boot back to red pill recovery and see if you can flash the stock GB from there.

I rooted my sgs 3 mini and install custom ROMs. I loaded CM 11 (4.4.2 kitkat) from Maclaw.pl. It worked, but after few weeks, my fhone just suddenly shut down. Tried to unroot it via odin + stock ROM, but nothing happens. Or something happens, there is the samsungs own bootlogo back. But the phone is stuck on that logo. Funny part is that when I put a charger on, there appears maclaws panda charging logo. I tried to load stock charging logo via odin, but nothing happens. Phone won't get to recovery mode, but the download mode works. Any ideas what to do? Except to throw it to trash can...
If the download work so
Recovery also need to work
Try again
Also did you try flash by Odin

It could be something with a corrupt param or something. Have you tried the service firmware also, not just the stock firmware?
Enable 3 button combo for recovery, do a factory reset and it will boot.
