Hi All,
Quick bit of advice, Failing on the OTA update at the moment,
I'm running;
- Android: 4.0.3
- Baseband: N7000XXLPT
- Build: IML74K.XXLQ2
Wondering if it's the fact I am running SpeedMod K3-11 which is why it's failing? Anyone else seeing this?
If so - wondering if I can reflash the stock kernel via Mobile Odin...
I have the ROM - N7000XXLQ2_N7000XXLPT_N7000CPWLP4_HOME.tar.md5 file - Is it the case that I extract the ZImage from this file to obtain the Stock ROM Kernel?
As stated here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371007
Note: I upgraded to this current version of ICS OTA - I DID NOT flash the above file via PC Odin.
I know I could get around it by reflashing in PC Odin but I'd like to not have to go that route..
Cheers
I was facing the same problem with OTA update on my stock rooted speedmod loaded Note. I thought the custom kernel is preventing the process. So my way was to flash the whole stock rom via PC Odin. Good thing it was a non-wipe version.
And yes, the zImage you pull from the rom is the stock kernel.
Cheers,
Not sure what's up with OTA..
However think the PC KIES issue is due to the fact that once again my PC seems to have lost the drivers needed to recognise the device in Download mode..... FFS...
Conditions for kies:
Need pcode, need csc and all stock components belonging to same rom, so all stock of same rom version. No root.
Never I have read kies updated a phone if with a rom for csc a, when wanting to uodating to another csc rom, bu just changing csc.
Ota can update a rooted phone as long as components again belong to one version of stock rom. Cf kernel of that rom no, the true kernel belonging to that rom with onky root yes. Ota also succeeds without pcode, most of the time.
Another condition is intact emei, which together with pcode can be secured by flashing efs backup, but you need proper backuo then.
You can midfy pcode by hex editing certain efs files, but it most of the time to tricky to achieve. You cannot edit emei that way. So make a proper efs backup
Edit: in the end efs backup and pc odin is all you need nd a safe kernel to be able to cleanse your installation should you wish to use different version and different csc. Then again changing csc triggers reset so onky change on safe kernel
Use this knowledge wisely

Cheers Baz,
So in effect as I'm running a stock ROM I'd need to flash the stock kernel zimage extracted from the ROM in order to update...
Or, backup everything, flash the new stock in Odin and restore my stuff...
Or finally flash GB, wipes, OTA / KIES update...
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, the first should work
Otherwise go back indeed to gb.
Note I havent figured another variable out, on one stock rom version I wsnt able to ota, but going back version earlier I was.
Not sure what it was.
In the end, just pc oding it is faster

Yep seems PC ODIN is the best way, just didn't wanna have to set everything back up again..

Hi I bought a galaxy s from e-bay locked on T-Mobile and have unlocked it. Presently it is on Éclair 2.1-update 1, when I tried to update its firmware via kies I got, this version of the device cannot be update.
Firmware version:-
PDA: I9000XXJF4
PHONE: I9000XXJF3
CSC: I9000TMUJE6
So I made some home work and now I know I have to flash a new firmware via odin but I have some questions cause the more I read the more I get confused.
Where can I get the latest stock firmware for flashing?
Do I need to flash PDA, PHONE, CSC and PIT (is it the PIT512 the right PIT for this modle?).
Do I need to change the boot loader?
Do I need to save anything other than phone numbers?
Am I missing anything else or am I good to go?
Many thanks for your help.
latest firmware : www.samfirmware.com - along with tutorials
some firmwares come in 3 files (pda, phone, csc) some come in 1 file (.tar)
Only use PIT with a firmware that has all 3 files. (512PIT is most common)
no need to change boot loader
you may want to back up your apps as THEY WILL be deleted.
other than that, you are good to go

i have never used kernel flasher, nor am i familiar with the captivate so i do not want to give you false information.
i recommend you flash a kernel thru odin, but firstly check in the kernel's thread to see what the instructions are.
some kernels require different flashing methods
I dont use it too, I always flash the JPU then Speedmod and I have access to CWM, then i flashing customs , btw on samfirmware you have tutorial how to flash rom with odin,
Thanks guys
Dear folks
When Samsung released their ICS update I was so exited but it wouldn't update mine since mine has csc lux so I had to wait till they released it for my country.
So the German version came online and I used PC Odin to get my phone to ICS with the German release. (So I flashed it? New to this)
Now I'm assuming that ICS is out for my country OTA or with Kies. So I want to use one of both to upgrade my phone so I have the stock and don't risk anything.
So you've probably seen the question coming, how do I get back to stock GB so I can update it afterwards with Kies or OTA.
Please take note that I'm a complete newb in this.
Thanks in advance!
You will have to use PC Odin to go back to stock Gingerbread.
Go here to find your stock rom for your country and download it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
You probably had to Odin to the ICS version you are on now, so if you remember how you did that, it's the same thing in Odin.
After you have that stock Gingerbread you should be able to check for updates and get your official OTA or Kies ICS.

You *must* flash a safe kernel first, reboot the phone again into download mode then you can flash your old GB ROM.
If you don't do that, you can trigger the emmc bug in your current ICS kernel and fry the internal memory, unless you're using a CM9-based kernel then you're safe.

I'm currently on a LA6 2.3.6 gingerbread, stock, non rooted, and I'm growing quite inpatient with the ICS release dates, which won't happen anytime soon for my CSC, obviously.
If I flash one of the open stock GB roms (want to change my CSC to DBT or similar), will I get the orange triangle, and will my phone get recognized by Kies in case I decide to go for a pre-rooted one? Also, will data and calls work properly with a CSC different from my phone's original one(MSR)?
I just want my Note fully functional, yet be able to use it as if it was unmodified, if possible
I am sorry for the possible stupid questions, I just couldn't find any complete explanations/answers for these!

Backup efs if you havent already done so. See my thread regarding q backups its got a link to how to do that.
Now just flashing stock gb wont increase counters. I havent found any malfunction myself, but reading postst in this forum has tought me the outcome can be different for anyone wtf.
So I suggest make cwm backup of current rom.
Download stock dbt rom gb, flash thought pc odin. Mind you better flash pre december rom so you can root it with root only method. Mind update ics throught kies you need to be unrooted. So if root is not important, flash latest version ics dbt right away. Then change csc it will wipe data. Then you have a possible, not gauranteed ota rom.
Just dont do wipe or factory reset in ics or cwm on ics.
Make sure you have a way back for warrantee, i.e your current rom download it somewhere next to nandroid backup lol
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
I've seen some questions related to that, but none so far managed to help me.
I'd like to start tinkering with custom roms but are afraid eventual warranty claim can be refused by the operator service center based on contents of ROM other than ones pushed by OTA.
The rom is a branded for particular operator with no chance of finding it in the wild, so I'd like to dump it first.
Here's the data:
2.3.6
Modem: N7000XXLB2
Kernel: 2.6.36-N7000XXLC1-CL1003701
Version: GINGERBREAD.XXLC1
CSC: N7000PLSLB1
The numbers look quite generic, is operator branding/customization restricted to some easily restartable partitions? What about simlock?
Best regards,
DS.
Go to www.sammobile.com and find any stockrom rom with a letter K at the last end, K means kies and its official. If you use those official rom to flash it, it will not produce binary count or yellow triangle that will void your waranty which means, whatever official rom you use it is covered with waranty. You dont need OTA or KIES to be able to claim your waranty provided you know how to use the pc odin or if rooted you can use also the mobileodin from google market were you can get it to flash any official rom you want.
+1 (Do not backup and restore a stock rom thru Nandroid). flash stock rom thru PC odin as mentioned above.
Thanks a lot guys!

Just answering myself for potential searchers:
No, it's not possible to do non inference GNote ROM backup. Every way taints your device but some of these traces can be later removed. Cleanest way to restore is really installing full (wipe) stock rom through PC odin, (but beware, reverting from stock ICS can be potentially dangerous.)
Why?
Backing up requires CWM kernel or root and one can't introduce either without a trace. The closest to nontrace way is to install some brick safe CWM equipped kernel using PC odin and do nandroind backup. In a you will trigger Samsung custom kernel binary counter (formally voids your warranty, yes, that's what you wanted to avoid), but apparently
that one can be reverted using Chainfire's triangle away utility. Welcome to the world of adventure!
Restore:
1. Install the very same kernel you used to make backup (avoid PC odin - your options are either CWM or mobile odin).
2. Reboot in recovery
3. Restore backup
4. Wipe cache
5. Install stock kernel
5. Reboot.
Never ever do any wipes / restores / formats / update.zip if your device is running stock ICS kernel!!
The safest way to avoid deadly mistakes and compatibility problems is always installing the same safe kernel (one that comes with CWM, most do) then reboot into recovery before doing any cwm stuff, install stuff, then (as last step) install kernel that works with rom on the device.
CM9 - CM10 - STOCK ICS - STOCK GB kernels are incompatible with each other and will cause your device to hang during bootup if mismatched with installed ROM.
I ultimately installed prerooted gb rom on the device and then loaded some ICS rom, loosing most personal data in the process (titanium backup does a lousy job restoring GB data on ICS). I avoided triangle and will use PC odin to restore it to some stock ICS if I need to return the device.
backup efs, root current install and check toolbox thread from drbketan on how to. Keep it at multiple locations.
To go back, you need to have a tar file, in www.sammobile.com of current version rom, belonging to that csc. You can take a version higher, if it exists at all there. If not but Kies does have update, you might need to get the temp rom file. This is tricky.
Then ultra clean install, on safe kernel (flashed clean way with mobile odin or ktool), reboot recovery, wipe everything (factory, cache, dalvik), then in mounts (take out external sd) format all except efs. Again only on safe kernel.
Boot into download mode, flash throught pc odin the downloaded rom, with pitfile(original obtainable in ketans thread sticky section development, your rom might be there to)
Reboot, check csc, imei pcodes, if they are altered or not available, you need to root again, put them back (efs backup) and reflash rom.
This should be the cleanest way of going back to a near factory condition.
Some traces may remain, but not much. All data is lost btw.
all at own risk.
edit:see next comment for rom file. I think dr ketans got the right one.

I recently went from custom ICS roms to stock gingerbread. I am having troubles trying to get the phone to update through wi-fi and Kies. When I try to update on the phone through wifi it says there is "no software update available". When connecting the Note with Kies it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies". Anyone else had this problem?
The ROM I flashed via ODIN is:
N7000XXKK9 ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000OXAKK9 -----------------Germany (Debitel) -------------------
I know I can just update via ODIN but I would like OTA updating to work.
Download OPEN Germany from three followinf link and you will have no issue with OTA
just flash 4.0.4 direct...since you are already on GB
do you need root? If so then instead flash the pre rooted GB rom on the same page... and yoi can use mobile odin then to wipe flash the 4.0.4 with everroot and supersu... That is what i would do...
Be sure to use a safe kernel if you plan on doing any wipes on ics

Well I read your preconditions and am not sure if I have everything correct. All I've done is flash the 4.0.4 stock ROM with Odin and still get the problem with Kies. Is there more I need to do?
why dont you keep updating via odin, Its faster then Kies.

I'm currently trying to sell the phone and the buyer may not want to do it that way. Rather than through Kies, I'm hoping to just get updating through the phone to be working. But I could just tell them to update through Odin if no solution is found.
Anyone have a solution to this problem?
Go by them one by one and eliminate them. If you cant figure one out, then ask
preconditions for update ota/kies
No root(for ota it doesnt matter)
All codes intact (imei, pcode)
All components installed of same rom and version of rom that was distributed through Kies or ota.
Rom csc must match the installed rom. Most updates aren't available because for phone csc there is no update. This is the csc obtainable throught dialing *#06# for imei then dial *#272*yourimeihere#. Note changing csc triggers factory reset, so do from save kernel should you like to change.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
have you reset your counter binary ?
Okay, now I feel dumb. Guess every problem/fix isn't always so technical. Believe problem was the wrong country/region was selected on the Samsung agreement and hadn't changed until I did a factory reset.
Okay, so I guess that wasn't the problem. A Singapore ROM had just happened to work while the others did not.
Edit2: Dudes remember do resets wipes only on safe kernels... Best done from gb.
Edit: made a way that could work for yah. Checking preconditions with some of the how to is a must. It saves following procedure. Anyway if you get stuck, follow this advice.
A way to get updatability functional throught Kies/OTA.
Restore efs backup of condition when first bought phone.
If none made, root phone and make one now safe multiple locations. (of the phone)
Then, if you know csc phone came with, download a rom for that csc, earliest gb possible, one that was distributed throught Kies or Ota. See www.sammobile.com for that. it shows a kies logo next to the rom in the firmware section. That is the one we are looking for. Should have in the zipfile a single tar file.
Now get a standard pit file and flash throught pc odin the rom with the pitfile. See dr ketans thread in sticky section development for that on how to do it. Do this all without external sd card or simcard in phone, never select clear efs in pc odin.
If phone doesnt reboot head into recovery and factory reset and clear cache. Reboot. After phone reboot dial *2767*3855# for ultimate factory reset. Do not change anything to the rom, no cf or modded kernel or different modem. You will lose all data.
Now after this completes,
Check imei, check csc as described earlier. All intact and inline with rom? Good, if not, select the csc of the rom press instal and let phone reboot.
Now check pcode:dial *2767*4387264636# this should be same as rom, and filled in. Pcode correct? Good.
Now you dont have root, codes correct, and an updatable rom.
Hook up to Kies and or ota update it!
You might need to check with different versions of roms(preferably gb to be safe). I found some weren't directly updatable, dont know why.
Notes
If imei is gone, reflash efs backup,
If nulls on entry with keyboard select the tar file in pcodin in cache and flash)
If pcode different, you can change, but search on how to edit it on computer with hex editor. Pm me if this is the case. I hope not. In the end its easier to start over with a rom matching that pcode that is there and selecting the coresponding csc
ps I have done this multiple times, all based on experience and countless hours figuring out how to fix it so I have way back should I want to sell phone in working condition.
All at own risk, I am trying to help, but can't guarantee anything, what worked for me may not work for others

I have been able to update from kies 3 times now, but last release just doesn't work.
My original CSC was ZTA, then I changed it to DBT when it was on 2.3.5 (GB).
Kies let me update from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 to 4.0.3, then to 4.0.4 (I am currently on XXLRK, CSC DBT).
Now, kies says:
Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies.
Current firmware version: N7000XXLRK/N7000DBTLRK/N7000XXLRK/N7000XXLRK (ZTA)
How does it know my device was originally ZTA?
Why have I been able to upgrade via Kies so far and last update Kies says I can't upgrade?
Thanks in advance.
Kies has an update of itself as well from time to time and it retains and detects your very original copy of your ROM in its system (before you change your csc to DBT- Germany?)
Comparing it with the initial(checksum) and with your latest ROM upgrade, KIES sees some anomaly on your latest ROM (since its not on the right tree path), therefore its telling you now, your latest ROM is not supported anymore.
You were able to fool the software before.. but it's not going to be fooled second time already. Either you can revert back to your original CSC and upgrade it again thru kies (on the right tree path) or the second option would be to use PC /mobile Odin from now on to upgrade (to the firmware/ROM of your choice).
Or you can clean install kies, take out all registry keys files etc. But thats to much hastle

yep that sucks good luck!
Kor is default csc for I think Asians rom, or Korean. If csc of phone is not present it defaults to a default csc in rom. Its funny.
Messed up many times. Be safe
You can select your choice csc rom tar file in cache in pc odin, flash and then its selectable, be on safe kernel or gb rom just in case
