I'll play. I came from two HTC devices. I thought CM was the solution to everything. The first thing I did was install every CM rom looking for the best one. None were as good as stock. More features, yes, but not as stable and choppier performance. Turns out CM is the solution to sense because it's really the closest you can get to pure Google on a Sense-based device.
I've made the rounds trying everything else out there the last week or two. The best rom I've run in terms of stability and performance is Pure AOSP. It's what I thought I had been trying to get when I tried the CM roms. It really is pure Google.

i always thought that CM was always buggy and not top performance, but when i finally tried it out on my nexus it wasent to bad. But i do agree that stock is faster in performance, and i really like AOKP which has more features i think, and is better performance, but i think that roms based off of mostly stock with a few features will get you the best performance and battery life.

Nice thing about the stock ROM for the N7 is it doesn't suck (once rooted).
Some tablets have such poor factory ROM's that you're pretty much required to run 2nd party ROM's, but for most users- the stock ROM for the N7 is good enough and will do just fine.

I'm stock & rooted on my N7 and my GSM GNex... For the 1st time in as long as I can remember, I don't feel the need for a custom ROM with JB 4.1.1 running so smoothly..
Stock and rooted. I haven't found a reason to try another rom yet.
Stock rooted with Motley's kernel running at 1.6 GHz. I agree with the other guys, I haven't felt the need to run a custom ROM (yet). JB is really smooth and the other ROMs don't seem to provide any other amazing features over the stock ROM. Once all the ROMs get out of alpha/beta I may be tempted to switch.

I just converted to glazed.. It rocks, and is buttery fast.
Running Team BAMFs ROM. It's stable and smooth.

Just wondering... what's your current favorite ROM for your Nexy, and why?
I used CM7 for most of my time owning my N1. Have it almost 2.5 years now. Very enjoyable experience.
Currently using MIUI GB 2.3.30, with Go Launcher and Neok kernel. I find it very stable and offers everything I need. I also enjoy the smoother experience GB offers for our device over ICS.
I also frequently try BCM ICS CM9, but always find myself reverting to MIUI as I miss working video camera and flash. Although gap is closing fast; flash now working, and video has just arrived.
Keeping a close eye on Sense 4 ROM too
What gets your vote?
PS hats off to all the rom cookers/developers for making the N1 so much fun to own

Cyanogenmod 7.10, most stable, best battery, most performance. I do like Sense , but it has battery drain, so no. ICS isnt complete yet, so I'm waiting for fix.

Which component of ICS that you are holding out for? I have been using ICS on a daily basis.
CM7 patched with PDroid and some solution to place apps in an dedicated partition on the SD card.
I'm currently working with both CyanogenMod7.2.0RC2 and BCMRC3.4Update1 .. I love having ICS working, but to be honest CM7 is better (i.e. more consistent and more stable) if this is your only phone.
I keep on messin' around and just assuming that one day I'll brick the device. That's OK though, a perfect opportunity to ditch AT&T once my GSM device is dead.
Anyway... here is question for you folks going back and forth between GB and ICS roms. Have you found a common internal partition size setup so you can simply nandroid restore back and forth? Or are you using BlackRose to resize each time?
i dont have a favor rom coz every 1 have some thing and not contained with other
now i'm using cm 7.2 its cool and the battery life is good
but the most thing i hate is call program (i dont know the true name) mean when someone call me his pic appear small and all that stile is ugly and cannot sync his facebook account with his name and pic
the sense roms give me a great call program and appear FB account ,....
but drain battery more and i think the camera quality is not good with all sense rom

I wouldn't remember it's been months and I only bring it up because the ROM now is glitchy so I'll keep a tab on it. IF he doesn't buy a new phone beforehand.

I love all the ics (BCM,Texasice, and Aokp) roms each have their own customization,very fast, and quite stable most of the time. I also like some of the gingerbread roms like cm7 and miui, they are very fast and have amazing battery life. Im not a big sense guy , but with sense 4.0 in dev i will prob give it a go . In the end the rom choice is up to the user.

Ok I been using this phone for two years or so
I loved it and had my blue days
I have struggled with a2sd and etc
However I was always unhappy with not having the sense look
And now I am using this hyper sense nova Rom and I am in love with it
I get close to ten hours battery with light to moderate usage
I have a battery caluberation problem but once I solve it ill probably not switch
I am more interested in features than looking so I prefer CM 7.2
I'm running BCM myself (4.0U1 at the moment) but I keep a backup of CM7.2.0 in case anything goes bad.
I'd like to test MIUI someday but AFAIK greek language which I need is not supported, at least for ICS-based roms.
I've flashed a few custom ROMs + Kernels on my Nexus 7, but I always return to stock. I find stock JB to just be rock-solid, with great battery life.
I've found that most custom ROMs have some tiny issues, and they always bug me. Same with custom kernels. There's always an occasional crash here or there, or some unexpected jerkiness.
But I guess it's always a compromise. If you want features/performance, you'll have to live with bugs/lower battery life. But, being a Nexus, we'll get newer, feature-filled versions of Android right away!
So what about you guys? Do you feel that custom ROMs/kernels are lacking that perfection and finesse the stock ROM has? Or is your custom ROM completely stable with absolutely no bugs?
I love the custom ROMS. No complaints from me. I prefer some version of CM...usually AOKP. They are always upgrading it, so there are some small problems with it at times but I really enjoy it too much to complain or go back to stock. Don't get me wrong stock is very smooth with few problems.

I so agree with the above.. Also your opinion is welcome but due note that these developers are doing this as a community effort for FREE.. They improve our devices give us some things Google decided to leave out. Also im not sure you are aware of this or not . But often you will see some of the So called custom rom stuff injected into future GOOGLE STOCK ROMS... Google does watch the development community and use there code from time to time . My guess is alot more then they would tell...

Cyanogenmod works perfectly on both my phone and nexus 7. It's the best of both worlds really. Clean stock look but with a sprinkle of customization.

My bootloader isn't even unlocked on my N7 and it's only unlocked on my GN so I can flash updates once OTA or images are posted.
I agree that all the roms are great. My favorite is PA, love that rom. But after a while i just feel like going back to stock. But then its not long before i am back on pa.

I don't like custom Roms on devices that have the latest version of android available. I just root. Adding a custom kernel only makes things unstable.

I agree with the OP on ROMS, I haven't found one "better" than stock yet. Different yes, more/other customizations, yes. But so far not better. Yes, the devs do this for free, and for their own reasons. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't state our preferences. There are kernels that improve the device greatly, running one myself. But I've tried more than half a dozen custom ROMS and none gave me anything that would make me stick with it. Always went back to stock.
Not knocking all the hard work and effort. It's pretty amazing what some of these devs come up with, wish I had the knowledge and skills they have. Might try to pick up some basics, just so I understand more of everything involved with it. But I'm a system guy, not really a software dev.
Keep in mind we are nitpicking, custom features on new code it takes sometime implement them properly. I am rocking stock at the moment with stock recovery just cause Google is moving fast this time of year.
So take any bug with the custom Roms like this, yes it has more features, you may or may not be affected by bugs. If that bothers you then rock stock. Cause once cm hits stable that's when everything usually falls into place.
Just hopefully we can have less people posting silly complaints on in process releases. Go look in the Ubuntu thread, some user is just posting "its slow" or " there is no reason to use this" as if was a final product makes me smh

Heh... I'm NOT in denial.
I haven't used a single ROM in the android development I only used ones from original development. Slim bean, eos, rasbean... all exceptional ROMs. Currently on rasbean and its by far the best for myself. Used trinity and Francos kernel have had better results with Francos, his is just about an optimised stockish kernel.
Always go with the people that know what they're doing. Not somebody who just builds aosp and throws some scripts and quadrant hacks to allude "speed"

We shoul be lucky we have so many options for our Nexus 7, Stock ROM is rock stable and smooth , and to add to that we have almost 7-8 different custom ROMS which are also stable each with their own features and 3-4 different kernels to play with
I am flashing different ROM every 4-5 days
Play around people thats what I like about Android - complete control of your device and Nexus - quick latest stock updates and lots of custom development
Agreed, I prefer stock rom, but also I like to root it, and change fonts...

I'm not too into the roms in android development either, the ones in original development are pretty damn good though and eclipse Rom is really fast, I was into the stock only phase till 4.1.2 and imo development seem a lot better and roms just seemed actually faster than stock to me, rasbean, eclipse, pa, and bugless beast seem to do the trick for me

Well you obviously haven't tried the RasBeanjelly ROM from rascarlo. When you try that one and the latest Trinity D-07 kernel, then you can talk about going back to Stock ROM.

I'm a noob when it comes to Android roms and such.
I have a rooted samsung galaxy s infront of me now but I have a question.
I have read that a lot of roms disable a couple of original features, like the google play store, video camera etc.
Now my question; Is there a custom rom that gives you anything like android 4.0+ for example with no features being lost?
Yes I have heard about CM but I read that it does remove a couple of features which I need..
What features will you miss? Play store and video work perfectly on cm10 and 10.1 based ROMs plus they trend to have lots of extra features compared to stock. I'm running Mackay ROM based on jelly bean 4.2 (cm 10.1) with semaphore kernel. Stable and really fast.

I'm using RemICS-JB_4.2 , and for me it is very stable and fast, UI is from SGS3, worth to try...
The mackay rom is very good
So it's just a myth that you will lose some stock functions? Don't trust me on my word but I think I've read that it removes HD filming or something.

You can enable xl ram (around 400 mb) in some kernels such as semaphore and devil which can mean you loose hd video, but by default it is disabled in almost all ROMs. So if you leave ram alone it's not a problem and I still have 720p video. Tbh there is a patch now that makes 720 work with big ram anyhow, but I manage just fine with the 389mb standard with semaphore so I haven't tested this.

Because CM9 is more stable. CM10 requires more resources to run on our old phones.You might not get enough RAM.I also noticed some games force closed on CM10.But they all work nicely in CM9.

Something popped in my head so that leaves me with 1 more question; I currently have hardcore speedmod kernel and I did the lagfix (transfer to EXT4) and it took some SD space of course. Now before I go to Semaphore kernel should I first somehow uninstall the lagfix? And how?

This is becoming less of an issue as development goes on but it is a factor to consider. I have to overclock cpu to get high end games to work. But you can't even install most of them on stock 2.3 so depends what you're after. I prefer the extra features that cm 10.1 gives. Can always flash to cm9 stable and give it a go and then upgrade from there, sensible to go to cm9 then 10 anyhow. You will have to full wipe between 9 and 10 though. So titanium backup is the best app you will ever install.

Few days ago I installed ELITEMOVILS:s 4.2.1 galaxy nexus stock rom. It's good but cant get the wifi working properly so I thought I'd try another one. Should I go for JB 4.1.2 or for 4.2.1? Are the 4.1.2 releases more stable and is there a big difference in features and speed? Also battery life is quite important factor for me when choosing ROM (BTW has anyone found a good replacement battery with longer battery life than the stock one?). I dont update ROMs that frequent so it would be important that the release would be stable and functioning.
Slim Roms are pretty lightweight 4.2.1 beta 1 for me has been pretty stable and responsive. I also downloaded and flashed Semaphore 2.9.0s afterwards.

4.1.2 should be more stable than 4.2.1 as its been developed longer and even has gotten the official stable version released.
4.2 does bring some new features like all new releases but not as major as for example 4.1 brought, for this reason Google decided to keep the Jellybean name for the newer version.
Regarding battery life your best bet is a Gingerbread ROM, but frankly I'm satisfied with my CM10 in that regard.
I'm using a Pisen 1700mAh battery, and its very good for its price,I bought it from Deal Extreme, but be careful to research a battery before buying any, most of them are horrible and can even break your phone in some cases.
It's been said an official 1800mAh battery meant for the Epic 4g (Carrier-locked Samsung Galaxy S2) fits our phone even though it's thicker; I just bought one myself, but it's being shipped from the US and I'm in Norway so it'll be a week before I could confirm that myself...

Thx for the reply. I just installed Slim Bean 4.2.1. Beta 2 six hours ago and so far I've liked it very much. WLAN working too. I think I'll change to 4.1.2. if I still encounter problems. I'll take a look at the DX battery. Please tell us how it went with the Epic 4g battery when u get to test it

I'm comming from a legend at 10.1 so i know pretty much what cm 10.1 is like
EDIT: I found that s-pen gestures are only found in TW based mods. HUH? What "kind" of roms are there? And is it true i install this rom and lose my s-pen functionality?
Because now, when it's new, i frequently use the pen. Maby when it isn't a gimick anymore i wouln't mind losing the funcitonalty but at the moment i kinda do....

Slim Bean's ROM is only ~90 MB and it's highly customizable. If you don't want to have that much customizability you can also try SuperNexus.
Edit: SuperNexus is based on 4.2, which is pretty new and not that stable like 4.1
Slimbean by far is the best rom i ever tried.
In descending order:
1. Slimbean rom
2. Stock ics
2. Cyanogen mod
3. Liquid smooth

Slim Bean is a nice smooth bare CM ROM.
Or if you want stock, Try CleaNote which is ICS based, its just a super smooth no nonsense stock ROM, nice and stable with great battery life.

I personaly would love to get rid of the whole touchwizz interface, in exepton of the s-pen and note app.
So, i basicaly want cynogenmod with stylus support (and note app support), but i believe the cynogenmod nightlies don't offer s-pen support? Anyone knows how this is?
And anyone knows an almost-cynogenmod wíth s-pen support?

That´s correct... PA and some other hybrid ROMs offer some of the S-Pen gestures, also at the PA thread there is a link with a list for the recommended S-Pen apps alternatives like azzledazzle says...
But, to be completely true and honest, there is NO custom or even stock ROM (from/for any device/manufacturer) that is entirely bug free and perfect... that's kinda both the beauty and the ugly side about Android, it keeps getting better version by version but will never be bug free for the nature of programming and coding, you will always find a bug, I promise haha
I dont mind some bugs as the stock one has them too. I just dont want an phone that reboots once i get that important call about my job interview (yes, this actually happened on my legend with cm 10.1).
And i dont want all the touchwiss crap (am i allowed to say that here? Hit me if i cant!) but just smooth and clean, kinda like cm. So basically slimbean with the option to use the stylus.

Cyanogenmod 10.1 is pretty stable and fast.
I tried some of them minimalistic AOSP builds but they always remove all the alarmclock sounds and leave me stuck with a standard sound that makes me grumpy the rest of the day.
So in my humble opinion, Cyanogenmod if you want to go for android 4.2
or PA if you want the fancy tablet mode.
Slim bean is the most slim nd most clean rom.

I would recommend super nexus 2, Its on its initial release but it works beautiful. I had a couple of issues with the supernexus build 5.

Hi,
I'm looking for a fast and light ROM. I have a Nexus 4 now so my tablet is pretty much just used for taking notes at University and watching the occasional YouTube video.
I looked and managed to find AOKP M6 Slim, however this seems to be discontinued and as a result, outdated.
If installing a more feature-heavy ROM and removing features is viable, could someone point me in the right direction to do that?

Still very rich in features and customization. Includes option to turn off nearly all aftermarket customizations and features, besides performance ones.
I highly suggest pairing with motley kernel.

I like Paranoid Android but you are going to get a different response from everyone. PA runs really smooth for me. It is not as feature filled as a lot of the other roms but gives some nice customization options. PIE control is also really nice as it allows you to take advantage of the entire screen.
The bottom line is that the only way to find the best ROM for you is to do some research and flash a few different ones. Try them for a few days and then switch if you are not pleased/get bored.

Rasbean. But that's the benefit of owning a nexus, you have so many options.
But I'm pretty positive once you flash rasbean, you won't flash anything else. I would advise flashing other roms first and then go to rasbean. You'll notice the difference.

I love that everyone posted a different ROM.
I fell in love with Xylon, it has A TON of features and customizations. I think it borrows (kang) popular features from a lot of ROMs and all the features are optional. Not to mention the ROM is super fast and smooth which I wouldn't expect from A ROM with so many features.
I personally use the custom faux kernel with it, makes the ROM that much slicker, and my battery lasts for an entire day.

I'm on stock ROM 4.2.2 , it's pretty fast stable and battery life is much much better than my previous phone GS3.
CM10.1 was unstable on GS3 and had alot of bugs.
Any annoying bugs on Cm10.1 for N4?

The bugs on the Samsung are due to the difficulty obtaining sources from Samsung. No such problem on the Nexus, and CyanogenMod is as stable as stock and you get the extra features to boot.
ALL of the roms for the Nexus 4 are fast because the phone is fast. I doubt anyone could tell the difference without running benchmarks so you should really just try a few and make a choice based on which feature set you like.

You sir are correct. CM10 on Nexus 4 is the best combination of lightweight and customisable so far that I've seen.
This is borderline a "which is the best ROM" thread and we all know how those turn out. Every ROM I've ever seen claims to be "light and fast" either directly or indirectly..
To the OP.. There are piles and piles of people making ROMs and kernels for this phone. It's one of the most active development communites I've seen in ages. Take advantage of it! No one can pick one for you.. Drop by the development forums, read, read, then read some more.. Pick 5 ROMs that sound up your alley and give them a try.. I'd suggest a ROM a week until you find one you are satisfied with.

Best part about coming to a Nexus forum is being confused about what ROM to flash. Always so many great ones to choose from. lol. :laugh:
So damn true, there are so many ROM's from so many great developers you do really get lost even when going through all of the topics.
So the best bet would be to try it for yourself and flash a few ROM's until you find the one you like.
P.S - this phone is so quick so i doubt really anyone can find a difference in performance between Rom's.

^ there is a difference but I feel it lies within the individual kernels. I've been testing kernels for about two weeks and find myself always coming back to trinity 97, even with 4.2.2 its smooth and battery life is insane. I've bounced from ROM to ROM and find xylon the smoothest. Once rasbean goes 4.2.2 I'll give it a shot. There are so many Roms and they are all *good. *everyone has their opinions and all the devs here put a lot of work and time in and all deserve the respect they get. As far as a “light" ROM goes slim bean would be the lightest coming in at under 110mb zip file, then you'll need gapps and they have minimal gapps available at around 25mb.
